I first visited the “Flott” 55 years ago. There was no bar, just a serving hatch and you had to summon a waiter by one of the bell pushes on the wall. Since then, there have been many owners - some not bad, some worse and some not even that good. But, regardless of some of the negative comments, I honestly thought John, Carol and Nicky did a really good job when they started. It’s just a shame that (a) Scotland tightened the drink-drive laws, killing the “pint on the way home” trade, and (b) COVID and the lockdowns knocked the stuffing out of many in the hospitality business. A lot of people in the trade came under terrible pressure…… And a lot shut for good. So, thank you John, Carol and Nicky for your efforts. You deserve better that some of stuff posted here. Good luck to you.

Been wanting to visit here for a long time. We finally made it yesterday for lunch. The two girls serving were lovely and chatty made us feel welcome. When we asked to move closer to the fire, wasn't a problem. We sat in dining area away from main bar but for some reason a man in main bar was sitting with the doors of the fire stove open, filling the entire place with a sickening smoke. The meal we had was okay nothing special. I wasn't convinced my chicken was cooked completely. However, as I said the girls were lovely but the place is tired, needs a complete overhaul. The waitress told us they had all been told that morning there was going to be new management so maybe it will be improved on. Who knows but the place has massive potential.

The interior has not been updated for years and looks terribly dated and worn. Needs an adequate heating system as on our visit the outside temperature was 3 degrees C and about the same inside, so winter coats remained on. This was a lunchtime visit and there were one couple and a walker in the dining area whereas 3 miles north towards Edinburgh we could not find a parking space in The Steading car park. The food was mediocre and the only good point was the young lady waitress who was bright, chirpy.and efficient but still retained her fleece due to the freezing conditions We have known the Flotterstone for over 30 years and are very infrequent visitors and should have known bette based on past experience The place is a wasted asset as the surrounding rural area is lovely and at one time, when awned by an American ex navy flier was a great place to go, but it has changed hands so many times since then, not for the better, and I believe is currently up for sale yet again

I booked a table for four but unfortunately I had to rearrange the date until the week after,I tried numerous times to let them know but the phone line was not taking call and was unable to leave a message.Anyway I managed to contact someone via messenger and got a reply that the place was shut for the week to give staff holidays,I thought great why the hell didn’t they phone me and let me know that they were shut.Geez. Anyway I booked a table when they opened up,the guy didn’t take my number or name this time.We all went up on the night we booked and guess what the blooming place was in darkness and closed again. We went to the Steading just down the road ,it was fully booked probably due to the flotterstone being closed. We did manage to get a table after a few minutes wait though.

The bar staff was so rude and the bad language was really out of order we had little kids with us as it was a family day out the food was really good gold we stayed for that if we never ordered the meal we would have just left I see the flotterstone is up for sale the best thing the new owners can do is get rid of the rude bar staff as she has no idea how to speak or how to deal with customers.

We popped in for lunch and despite us being the only two customers the service was appalling. The Television was on in the background but the staff also turned the radio on but that aural cacophony was not enough as the bar man sat at the bar with his Ipad watching videos. The bar man also interrupted lunch with a series of burps. Ironically Gordon Ramsey's Hell kitchen was playing on the television so I suspected that it was a total wind up and that Gordon would appear from behind the bar laughing or even the late Jeremy Beadle: "This week the star of the show is you". Sadly no. The food was good though. Top tip to the chef: "Leave".

Awful pub. Not at all welcomed by the staff. Food extremely poor quality. Cold and tasteless. We were the only customers for drinks and lunch despite it being a sunny day and the area very busy with walkers. Toilets were dirty. The pub itself could be a goldmine for the right owners. Hundreds of people passing the pub but unfortunately once visited you would not return. Dont waste your time and money. Walk on by like the majority of walkers!

This place is an unfortunate disaster. The location is fantastic and has potential for this place to be such an amazing pub/ restaurant. However, reality strikes - the owners have gone lazy and are resting on a previous era. The staff are poorly trained and therefore the service is such a shambles. The food is below standard. The cleanliness of the public areas including toilets is very poor, which begs the question about the areas the public don’t have access to - eg the kitchen. I wouldn’t recommend and will never return.

Making paying customers feel like an inconvenience? Not the best business model. They (very vocally) reluctantly let us sit in the restaurant area despite only wanting drinks. Made it very clear how terrible this was, not creating the best welcome. Immediately put off by the woman in charge. We were waiting for our bus out of the cold and had all bought drinks, stayed maybe an hour? The woman in charge very passive-aggressively cleared our glasses, as if to motion us to leave. But we still had 20 minutes until our bus. We had paid, we weren’t being rude, so we decided it’d be fine to stay and wait. There were dozens of tables left so we weren’t holding anyone up. But no. 5 minutes later, she came over and said exactly this: “You’re all done right? Just remember, this was a massive favour to let you sit in the restaurant area.” So we decided we’d had enough and we’d follow her incredibly rude request to leave. We stood in the cold waiting for our bus. Won’t be going back. They really know how to take the ‘hospitable’ out of ‘hospitality’. I wonder if the management read these reviews? Seems to be a lot of negative ones coming in recently. It literally just requires caring about the job and your customers.

Thought I'd check out this pub for the first time, as it's quite prominent and I fancied a quick pint and some country pub vibes. The staff were fine but the pub is quite scruffy and tired inside and out. Cold draughts chilled the knees and ankles each time a customer entered the front door or serving staff brought in food, and the log burner and assorted Argos electric fans were fighting a losing battle. Busy with diners, but feels starved of investment.

Lovely situated pub was looking forward to a beer and some chips after our walk however although the beer was nice the chips are basically McDonald’s French fries and we had vegetable broth which was actually veg stock with overcooked frozen veg in it then we were charged £23,40 for 2 portions which was probably the most expensive soup and chips I’ve ever had! Drink but don’t eat I recommend

We booked here for a Christmas meal as we had had a lovely time there a few years ago and thought we would try it again. How wrong we were! When we arrived we got the impression that they really couldn't be bothered, the owner didn't even know which table we were meant to sit at and the table wasn't even set! There was a fire in the corner burning but that was the only atmosphere there was. We made our order and the starters arrived, I had to then ask for cutlery, the owner brought us over forks, nothing else!!! I had to ask for knives and napkins. The female who had taken our order was very polite but for some reason was walking about with here coat on the whole time, certainly doesn't look very professional. Plates were cleared while others were still eating, thankfully the food was very nice! Towards the end of our evening I noticed the owners wife standing with a large glass of wine hiding behind a pillar. This could be a lovely place if more care and attention is taken and customers are put first, think they are more interested in serving and chatting to the locals that are sitting in the bar area. This is not how you run a business!

So much potential. But so poor. First impressions: No welcome. Dark, dingy, smells mouldy. But nice log fire at one end. Service slow as hell. Part of order forgotten and had to re-order it. Grossly overpriced. The gents (2 men) running the show don’t seem to be suited to the hospitality game. This could be a gem nestled in the Pentlands. Sadly it isn’t. My advice would be to avoid it.

Hadn't been here in years so decided to go for a change to our usual. Bad decision. As it was just after 12 asked about the breakfast and was told by the young lady who had taken our order it did finish at 12 but the chef would do it but.....No he wouldn't, we were the only ones in the place , not as though he was busy but ok. 3 x toasties with chips it was then, cheese and bacon for me and the state of the toastie makes me glad I didn't get to order the breakfast hard over cooked and burnt, black enough that it left marks on the cheese and for 7 quid I would expect more than 1 slice of bacon. And a fiver for chips would expect better than farm foods cheapest. Overall..... Avoid.make your day better one by going somewhere else.

Really really sad to see this place in the state it was. Just came if for drinks after a walk, started ordering and the guy at the bar stopped half way through the order to server another customer who was settling his bar tab, but he kept printing the wrong one off. Then someone else got served and then he came back to me. The menu there doesn’t look anywhere and good as it once was and the atmosphere wasn’t great either. I have to say it was a really anti climax going there this time and I certainly will not be going back any time soon. I used to recommend this place to all my friends going for walks in the hills, but again will not do that. There are far better pubs the Balerno side of the pentlands!

I have never before left a negative review on any restaurant I've ever visited or accommodation I've stayed in, preferring to say nothing if they hadn't lived up to expectations rather than posting anything negative that might damage their reputations. However the food we ate on our visit today to Flotterstone was so bad I feel it's worth mentioning to warn people in advance to avoid. It was beautiful weather and we travelled over from Fife specifically to enjoy what I remembered as a lovely place, admittedly from a good few years ago. I didn't take the precaution of reading any of the reviews that I've now noticed (too late of course in our case). We had potato wedges, Nachos and Macaroni dishes between us and it was quite simply some of the worst food we have ever eaten in our lives. The place deserves to be a gem given its beautiful location but I'm afraid there's a lot to do to get it back to what it used to be and I'd echo many of the complaints left by other reviewers. Best to avoid.

I've been to flotterstone numerous times over the years for a bite to eat after enjoying a dog walk. So naturally was looking forward to going again as it had been a while since the last visit. I was staggered at how this once friendly, cosy pub had deteriorated. I have read several reviews and can only agree with every poor review. There is also an element of concern. The "old man" used to be a delightful, chatty person. Always made a fuss of his doggie customers and gave them a treat. He looks decidedly unwell. The blonde manager who other reviews mentioned, wasn't there on our visit, but if it was the same lady I'm thinking of who had an Aberdonian accent, also used to be super friendly and welcoming. What has happened to this once gem of a place. I had bacon and cheese burger. I could hardly eat it. The burger tasted bit strange. I didn't even give it to the dog. I really regret not complaining about it but I never like to make a fuss. Customer service was dreadful so probably wouldn't have made much difference anyway. The guy behind the bar looked like it was the last place on earth he wanted to be! Don't blame him on that one! My partner had chicken curry which seemed ok and he enjoyed his pint but then our bill was wrong without so much as an apology. I fail to see how this picturesque little pub can survive if this dreadful service/food/atmosphere continues. The only way I would return would be out of curiosity!

If you like quality service and a cleanly restaurant don't go to the Flotterstone. Staff arrogant, ignorant and after snapping that we would need to wait for a clear table we gave up and left after 10 minutes of looking at 8 empty tables waiting...

Was in tonight, and as a hospitality worker was so impressed by the service, just homely with the nice smell and warmth from the wood burner. Very Scottish decor and this could be improved but covid has made everything difficult in hospitality. Fish and chips...

Terrible experience this morning for breakfast. Started off when we asked if the restaurant was open to be given a smart comment of “you just walked through the door didn’t you” we then sat down and waited 5 minutes with no one coming with menus...

Terrible food and stench of sewage = unhappy experience. We sat outside, noticing that all the spare tables were near the stream. As we got closer, we realised why the tables were all vacant - over-powering stench of sewage. The food was truly awful. We...

Had an evening meal here - nice location just off the main road and the food was OK, but the staff were just not interested in the non-regulars. Have been to a lot friendlier places.

Lovely fish and chips for me, and veggie chilli for Mrs. Great because you can take dog, and don't have to worry about being slightly muddy after walk. Great value 👏.

Our family of three like this pub because of the setting at the gateway to the Pentlands Regional park. We have been around 6 times. There are plenty of straightforward family walks starting from the inn, (pick up a leaflet at the Visitor Centre just along the road) and a very pleasant beer garden to return to for drinks outside if the Scottish weather gods are kind. It has an indoor dining restaurant too if those gods are fickle - and casual bar meals. We just wanted a drink and some bar snacks for a light bite, with pate and oatcakes on the menu; so I asked for pate and brown toast instead of oatcakes. The barman told me there was no brown toast. I asked if they could do white toast - he said no. I said can they do just bread? The barman checked with a colleague and said yes, so I ordered it with a side of chips for my daughter. The service was quick enough, and the chips freshly cooked.... but the pate came with oatcakes ! and not the bread ordered. OK, the pub was busy with walkers - but why on earth does Scotland have to so frequently disappoint customers with slack service and a simple lack of attention to small details?Three drinks ( a wine, a pint of cider and a coke) plus pate & bread @ £6.75 (oops! forgot) and a side of chips (£3.50) came to £23+, so it's not the best value pub in the area.A shame - it's just as well the setting and decent enough food compensate for the daft niggly shortcomings and Lake District prices... but I'm sure we'll be back.

I've enjoyed the wonderful service and beautiful beer garden before. I remember enjoying the burgers before. This pasty patty (which comes from a Butcher apparently) fell short of my expectations. Terrible flavour, no texture and an offputting colour. Such a shame a staple like this is not made fresh. The bacon was undercooked too. Select your meal carefully :(

Popped in for a meal the other evening after a walk in the hills. Friendly banter, cheery waitress, and a table outside in the remarkably midge-free beer garden. Standard pub food but tasty and appreciated, enjoyed in the setting. All good. Negative is Covid-19 related: visit was after Scotland made it legal to take people's contact details - and no system was in place to do that (that we saw), and we were not asked. That's disappointing stuff.

3 delivery's we have had since 18th of December. 95 pound we have spent. First one was good. Other 2 absolutely atrocious. 1 hour and 30 mins waiting time. I phoned up to complain because food was cold. We are less than 2 miles down the road. Managers reaction to my complaint was " i think your being spiteful". Another disgrace as we're spending hard earned money on there food and it isn't good enough. Best menu in penicuick worst delivery service and quality of food!!! Re think before ordering from here

I was in the Justinlees on Sunday 16th February, the staff were very welcoming and attentive, I had the Bacon Cheese Burger which was lovely, portion size was really good. I will be back for food and drinks. Only thing i would suggest is having all staff wearing uniform, 2 Women in black and 1 gentleman in the Ember Inns Polo which made them identifiable as staff members but one gentleman was in blue jeans and a sports top which I could have mistaken him as a customer.

There have been many changes since we last visited Whitmuir pre-pandemic. The farm food shop has gone and has been replaced by Junkshop Antiques (which used to operate from smaller premises on the site); The Dancing Light gallery apparently moved online some time ago and the vacant unit they previously occupied was due to be re-launched as a (Christmas) shop when we were there in November 2022. The café looks the same as before (minus the gallery’s paintings) but opened again under new ownership in September 2022 and now trades simply as Whitmuir Cafe. I’m glad to see the log burner remains in place as it is needed to try to keep this cavernous place warm at this time of year. Quercus Garden Plants still operate on the site however when we visited garden plants were not something we were looking to explore. At the time of our lunch visit there was a slow, steady flow of customers but these are large premises to fill so it lacked atmosphere. The menu choice is modest and we ordered up their Toastie of the Day, which was ham and cheese, served with house salad and dressing £6.95). My wife’s request to replace the sourdough bread with brown bread was met. I ordered a Bagel with chicken & lemon mayonnaise, also served with house salad and dressing (£6.25). We both enjoyed our lunch - the chicken was plentiful and tasty with the mayo, the toastie filling good quality and we both rated the house salad and dressing very highly. The only criticism was that the cutlery knives seemed blunt. The coffee we had along with the food was very good - Flat white (£2.95) and Americano (£2.60) - so we ordered another to go along with the home bakes both of which happened to be gluten free. My wife requested the smaller of the large looking slices of Treacle and Lemon tart on display, which turned out to be wise since she was unable to finish it; and I had an Almond slice which I too was unable to finish. Verdict on the cakes was “okay” however we have only rarely found a gluten free cake which we could say we really enjoyed so that is probably just our taste. Overall cost of lunch was just over £29 which we thought was good value. Staff were friendly and efficient. It’s early days for the revised format and not as attractive an overall destination for us however we wish them well. Check opening hours if travelling - seems to be Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am until 4.00pm at present.
