I have been many times for Sunday lunch and enjoyed it but my last visit was a disappointment. The beef was not great with seams of gristle running through it. The roast potatoes were tiny and not crispy at all. They tasted like they had been reheated. The yorkshire pudding was soft as opposed to crispy and the veg portions were somewhat small. For the price charged I expect my meal to be appetising and on this occasion it wasn't. Please remember this money is hard earned and people deserve better.

When you arrive no idea where to go to find your table. Saw a waiter and told to go to the bar and then he shot off. So went to busy bar with drinkers and I had to queue to ask for table. Ordered drinks and coke (flat) arrived and told to wait for another waiter. Before we could order another waiter strode over picked up the Sunday roast menu and just said no more roast and walked off. At this point had enough of the terrible service. Left the untouched coke and one sip wine and explained service offered my address but told it was OK I could go now!!@!

Upon arriving at the Fleece we were pleasantly surprised, with the immaculate car park and grounds; the building and entrance adds fantastic character to the experience. My daughter was in awe of the library section and was quite content to wait for our meals scanning the hundreds of accessible books. The visit for ourselves beyond this was rather flat and dispassionate; we waited a longer time to be served than I would have thought necessary given the quiet service. The positives- my half portion roast was plentiful and very tasty, tender meat and most importantly for northerners- great gravy. Sadly the children’s meals were a complete let down, and for me those are the most important factor. The servers paid no attention to the things most important to me, no colouring, no interactions. The pizza which was nearly £10 was literally smaller than my hand. My daughter’s pasta was rather small portion & unappealing, neither with a side. At no point were we checked back, offered desserts or more drinks. We gave up waiting in the end and paid, I relayed my displeasure to be informed they would tell the chef with a tone that lacked aplomb. I gave my feedback via the web form and received no correspondence. I reached out to the general manager months subsequent to be offered, what seemed like, a genuine apology and was researching the IT issues. I was offered a 20% discount on food & drink for my next visit- but given the complete lack of attentiveness I won’t be taking them up on the offer which didn’t make up for what was a rather underwhelming visit.

Feel a bit indifferent about this one. We stayed at an air bnb locally and the host recommended this pub. We booked ahead but when we arrived we weren’t sure to go into the restaurant or bar. After spending 5 minutes walking around trying to find a member of staff the chef eventually came out of the kitchen and told us to go to the bar. The food was really good. We had fish pie and fish and chips both really tasty. The house wine was £27 for the bottle which I think is crazy. Probs the most we have ever paid for house wine. The bar was crazy loud and everyone seemed so drunk (at 7pm) so couldn’t really have a drink in that area. Overall decent.

Lovely food - great atmosphere. Visited with a young baby and a dog and could not have been made to feel more welcome. Restaurant was busy so took us a while to find someone who could guide us to our table but staff were very accommodating and menus had plenty of choice for allergy- sufferers and difficult dietary requirements. Food was good pub food with plenty of choice - ciders, beers and wines were varied and plentiful. We visited at a very busy time of year and nothing was out of stock/sold out (wonderful after our experience at other venues)

Beautiful ambience. The restaurant is very well laid out. Plenty of room to enjoy conversation without being able to hear everyone else's. The duck, fish and chips and fish pie were amazing as were the chips.(Only one small criticism was the steak and oxtail pie, which was not as well received). Unfortunately we couldn't sample the desserts as there was an electrical fault in the kitchen, but I'm sure they would have been as amazing as the main course. The waiting staff were so professional and really lovely. The Fleece was a real treat! Can't wait to visit again.

The place we wanted to eat didn't have a chef at the moment, so the Fleece Inn was recommended. All I can say is, thank you, thank you. Old world pub restaurant, beams and an open fire with a smallish menu. I had the chicken breast, orzo, spinach and feta, a taste sensation with a moist chicken breast. Absolutely gorgeous. Partner had steak and ale pie, which was very good too. However he would have preferred his veggies a little softer. Staff great, very friendly. A little out of the way but would definitely recommend.

The Fleece Inn was recommended to us by the owners of Green Bank Farmhouse B&B where we were staying. It was an excellent suggestion because we were so impressed. When we visited it had only been open for 3 days; not that we would have known that. The staff were welcoming and friendly (all wearing visors); the tables were all suitably set away from others. The pub had a great atmosphere and it was noticeable that it was well supported by local people which is always a very positive sign. We both had the steak and ale pie which was amazing. The pub also has a lovely garden area available including an area with a fire pit. If we are in the area again, we would definitely go back.

Delicious as always. Favourite pub. Never fails to impress!Always a warm welcome. Taken to lovely round table in the back and drinks brought to our table. Menus given and order taken promptly. Pub reasonably busy which was nice to see, especially as coronavirus seems to be scaring most people. The meals looked absolutely exquisite and tasted as good as they looked. I had the chicken breast, which was so moist, but keep forgetting to ask for my veg not to be al dente (my fault) so the beans were a bit too crispy for my liking, but that’s just me. Couldn’t eat it all as it was a very generous portion of chicken - much to my husband’s delight!!!! He had a scrumptious gammon which he always plumps for here as it never fails to impress. Mum had duck breast and ate every last morsel! I can’t stress enough how The Fleece have everything just right here and even welcome dogs in the bar area.

I have eaten here a couple of times but years ago.We visited with friends and found The Fleece to be busy but still relaxed. A small number of ‘locals’ populated the bar and there was a great buzz about the dining area. The tables are well spaced allowing for sufficient privacy. The food came swiftly and to a good standard. We opted for small shared starters and then the four mains. Duck breast, Cajun Salmon, Steak & Ale pie and a Fish pie.All the dishes were good portions and well presented, all were piping hot too.Four empty dishes were returned, with compliments to the chef. A very good meal and the prices seemed average, I’d recommend a visit. There are plenty of options behind the bar and a good choice for everyone.I have no minus points for the Fleece and will return.

Although local we had not visited here before.I would say It was a bit disconcerting to arrive in an unlit car park and then find the hotel door off the car park was locked!Having found our way to the front (and apparently the only) entrance we were surprised to find the entrance and bar areas absolutely teaming with people (mainly men) so much so my wife and I had difficulty in pushing our way through to the dining area to meet our friends (we gathered later these were the local shooters seeking refreshment after working up a thirst killing off the local wildlife). The dining room we were shown was an intimate area able to accommodate maybe 20 diners and entirely fit for purpose and I understand there are several other dining areas. Considering the large numbers in the bar we were served with drinks very promptly and after a reasonable time our food orders were taken and the meals were served again within a resonable time. The waitresses were pleasant and attentive. The drinks were reasonably priced and comparable with other pubs in the area.As to the mains, these were chosen from a reasonably varied menu (no specials available midweek). We chose 3 fish pies, 1 steak pie, 1 battered fish and chips and 1 duck. Apparently the fish pies were chosen from past memories of excellence and those of us that had them confirmed these were as good as they recalled. My wife(fish and chips) declared the fish excellent, batter crisp and chips plump and just right ( I can confirm this as I ate just under half of hers due to the generous portion and her small appetite!) . My duck portion was generous and cooked to perfection and the accompanying mash and sauce well seasoned (although the brocolli was a little "al dente"). I had 4 scoops of icecream for my desert which turned out by a concensous of opinion to be the best choice for value for money to some of the alternatives which seemed to be a bit on the mean side considering portion size and price. Be warned! Overall an enjoyable experience and a visit is strongly recommended, however do bring a torch if you are visiting after dark!

Visited recently for Sunday lunch. I had rung and booked a table luckily as it turned out to be really busy. The service was really quick and we had barely started our drink when it arrived. I had roast lamb and my husband roast beef. The meal can be ordered as one, two or three courses. It was delicious and to me just had that 'little extra touch' ...... the flavours were lovely, the gravy especially good. Because the pub was so busy, it did seem a little noisy and some people were dressed for going out, others were in muddy wellies etc!

Wonderful roast dinners. I had half a roast chicken but off the bone which was totally delicious! I was a bit doubtful about ‘apricot and onion stuffing’ but it was very tasty. Kale was a bit al-dente so I should’ve asked for veg to be ‘done properly’ which is my fault. Husband had roast lamb and said it was delicious. After a day walking in the cold November air we called at The Fleece at 5.30pm to find the car park almost full and the bar very busy. We were looking for a meal and were pleased there was availability despite not booking ahead. We had a very good meal, large portions that satisfied even a couple of very hungry teenagers. Classic Inn Burger, Meat Platter and Slow Roasted Belly Pork from the specials were our choices from a wide ranging menu. A choice of 4 real ales and plenty of soft drinks were available in the well stocked bar. That a bar is so busy at 5.30pm on a weekday speaks for itself. Local people clearly love it, as we did too. I look forward to returning to the Fleece when we are next in the area.

Went to the fleece inn as staying locally and didn't want to venture too far. Starters arrived quickly. But could of been served a lot hotter as only luke warm at best. Main courses left a lot to be desired, the prices didn't reflect the portion sizes or quality for that matter. Plenty of staff milling about but even basic customer service not attained. Think for a first visit to the fleece inn was very lack lustre. May give it ago again if in the area. But may well try somewhere else locally.

Had two course special. Excellent value for money and the dessert was to die for. Will visit again. Staff were friendly and very helpful, lovely place, immaculately clean.

It was sooo difficult to choose, but everything we picked was excellent! The beef and ale pie was big. I loved the fish platter.

Stayed again at the Fleece Inn en route home to Scotland. Never fails to disappoint. Exceptionally clean rooms. Food wonderful. Staff really helpful, especially Ewan who arranged sandwiches and coffee for us when we arrived. Will certainly continue to stay at this wonderful Inn whenever we are in the area.

I put my review of the restaurant on the hotels page by mistake but suffice to say food and service were excellent during a recent visit. £36 bill for 2 x 2 courses, a large wine and bottle of cider. Service was great and menu interesting. I’ll definitely revisit. Great to find a pub with home cooked food in a class of its own...

Had Sunday Lunch here last week-end. Nice decor and good food, though some members of staff should, and could have been more welcoming. Some customer service and smiling training required me thinks!

Came here with friends, 4 of us. Slightly disappointed with the meal to be honest, my partner and myself choose the baked cod from the specials menu, fairly bland really, the cod was well cooked, but the veg was nothing special and the plate was swimming in some kind of water based sauce, wasn't too good as it flooded the plate. Our friends choose different meals, they seemed okay though. We all choose a pudding, these were fine.

Showed up Saturday afternoon to an empty pub with a few people at the bar. Completely ignored by the staff we sat down and looked at menu we took ourselves. When member of staff bothered to show up it was only to tell us all tables are booked (No reserved sign on tables) and we can only eat outside. So off we go outside to beer garden just to see all tables taken. Left the place. Terrible service and won't be coming back.

The pub is very nice and cosy with friendly staff. We visited on a weekday, and the pub was very quiet, but we waited nearly 40 minutes from ordering to be served.

We booked a table for lunch @ 1pm for Easter Sunday and glad we did as the pub soon filled up. There was a lovely log fire in the bar area which was very welcoming as you walk in. Even though the staff were very busy they were attentive and acknowledged your arrival and we were soon served at the bar and taken to our table which was a lovely table for 2 near another log fire which gave it a very cosy setting. The Fleece has been very nicely refurbished to a high standard making it a pleasure to visit.

Strange but true, turned up, lots of empty tables but all reserved and not available. Couldn't eat at the bar. Was offered the Menu to read, but not to order from. Urgh, no thanks.

Effectively The Fleece is our local, but I recommend it as a place to eat and stay to anyone who will listen to me, and I've never heard of anyone who has been disappointed when they've taken my advice. Although I've not stayed there, I have friends who have, One described the bed as "like sleeping on a cloud" and will be back as soon as he can. Food is always great with a good choice, even for veggies like me. Excellent selection of wines, spirits and beers, and a fantastic village shop too. It has been transformed over the past few years and is now a real destination pub. (I once gave it a very poor review based on previous management and regime around 8 years ago). Worth a trip if you're ever in the area, there are some lovely walks to be had locally too.

I really don’t want to share this because we often miss out getting a table but….. For the last few years, the Silverdale hotel is the stand out place for food. I swear the pies in this place are incredible. I’m not sure Michelin do sars for pies but if they did, these guys would have 5 stars. Probably never get a table now🤷🏼♂️

Great pub, with history. Lovely staff, great pub grub (battered halloumi and chips), and beautifully kept beer. What's not to like! 😁👍

I've eaten at The Herbarium lots of times now and every meal I've had has been delicious. I love their matcha tea too. I'm not fully vegan, but try to eat a plant-based diet 4-5 days a week, and you certainly don't feel you're sacrificing anything in terms of taste, variety or quality at The Herb. A calming atmosphere and lovely staff too. Well done to the whole team (including the Chefs who probably don't get a shout out often enough) 👏
