Had lunch here while on our day out at the steam railway. The cafe is situated behind the station building and in the carpark. There is plenty of seating both inside and out. The food is good and reasonably priced.

As Sunday morning, post dog walk treats go, this has to be the worst. It’s an old, cold, dry and mean version of a bacon bap for £4.90. Had I seen it before I got home, I would have taken it back and asked why it’s ok to do this to the paying public. This can’t be commercially viable. People talk.

Naively assumed that a ‘traditional’ station cafe might be able to present a decent breakfast… along the lines of similar establishments around the country. Very poor quality sausage lacking any sort of meaty flavour, lukewarm and with a nasty soft texture. I could well believe it was a veggie version but no suggestion anywhere that this was the case. Flabby bacon, hash brown tasted of old cooking oil as did the fried bread. A nice idea… but using up the crusts from the loaf is a bit of a cheat as they go hard. Also only half a slice of fried bread… seems a bit miserly. Egg was the best bit… clearly just cooked whereas the rest of the food looked and tasted as though it had been hanging around for too long and kept barely warm. Maybe my timing was wrong as I was there about 20 minutes before the end of breakfast service… that’s no excuse, quality should be up to standard whatever time the food is served. Disappointing… convenient location for a snack or meal when going past

Tried to order a assam tea that took 4 attempts. Also ordered a cheeseburger and chips. Burger arrived at 13:18 but no chips after the second time asking staff. The chips arrived at 13:54. Reason given was that they had new staff, who started that day. But why would you have new staff members operating a till and taking orders with no-one with them. The answer to that is no-one who is a good manager.

The cafe is situated next to Toddington station. It is light and airy and at this time of the year the cherry blossom is in full bloom, so if you are sitting outside it is a lovely sight. We ordered the sausage, mash and peas, shortly after we were advised that they had run out of mash so chips were used as a replacement. Unfortunately just after this a booked party came in which resulted in a delay to us receiving our food. The meal was excellent, sausages very tasty and the portions extremely generous.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, tables clean, the bacon and sausage rolls we order were ok but the supplier of the sausages needs changing However the worst thing was the coffee I have to say the cappuccinos we had were dire and worst of all charged at £.3.40 and not even proper ground coffee but out of a push button machine. Other places are only charging between 2.70-£3.50 but with proper ground, tamped coffee.

We visited twice one Sunday. Our first visit for tea and a fruit scone was fine: my only suggestion would be that the scone would be much better if it had had a 10-second microwave warming. Our second visit for a late lunch was much less satisfactory. I asked for two tuna sandwiches to be made up using brown bread, but as one of us only takes a limited amount of bread, I asked if the second sandwich could be without the top section of bread, like an open sandwich.I made clear that I was not expecting a reduction in price, simply wanting to avoid the wastage of throwing out one of the pieces of bread afterwards. However this seems to be a concept that the lady serving us was unable to grasp. She kept referring to it as a half sandwich and I said that was fine as long as that meant an open sandwich ie with the top piece of bread missing. So far, so good.I then asked for the "half sandwich" to be without butter and this was duly noted down. On being asked if I wanted crisps and a salad garnish, I said yes as long as the garnish had no dressing and again this was noted down. When the sandwiches were delivered, I asked to check which one was without butter, to be told neither had. I asked for some butter to use on the one without butter, and also said that the garnish had dressing on it. A few moments later the original lady who had taken our order arrived, clearly rather angry, presumably because she thought we were changing our requests.I pointed out that the sandwich that had come with salad garnish had dressing on it even though it has been noted it was not to have any, and she replied that the dressing request was for the other sandwich even though it itself had no garnish! She said that sandwiches with mayonnaise were not normally served with butter. I wondered why this had not been said to me when the "no butter" requests had been made and noted, as the obvious assumption would then be that butter would be used on the other sandwich.Eventually it was all sorted but we were being treated very frostily indeed - not a good advert for customer service.I would have rated more highly if we had not had this exasperating second experience.

We were travelling on the train to Cheltenham and came in for a coffee to take away. I had missed breakfast and was looking for a snack but the only thing I could find was an "emergency" bag of crisps. I do not eat cake or scones which were on offer at the counter. They do a cooked breakfast but there was no time for that.I had the same problem at lunch time. The soup came with a huge bread roll and butter. I do not eat bread or cakes. Maybe I could have just had the soup and not paid for the roll which would have been wasted but I did not like to ask. To be fair there was a vegetarian pasta bake on offer and a vegetarian burgher but the burgher came with bread and I am not allowed pasta. A simple salad would have been wonderful. However, the place was clean and tidy and service was fine and speedy. I think that this cafe would suit most people who do not mind eating fattening foods. The cafe was well run and a lot of people would be very happy here. If you are vegetarian or vegan and want to eat a healthy diet just bring your own food to eat elsewhere and maybe come here for a hot drink.

Both the baguettes were mayo on stale bread, the chips were frozen chips, the wine has not been chilled and I do not believe that all the 5 stars are legitimate as the service was abysmal. There was not enough room in the cafe so we had to sit outside. The tables were dirty and not cleared. Dogs were not allowed inside even though it was just a cafe, although allowed on the train. Loved every minute (apart from going to the Pheasant Inn. Will NEVER go there again!) so very glad we took our custom to the Café for lunch instead and the staff were amazing. Manager at the Pheasant could learn a lot from the staff here. x x

The cafe does a daily special as well as a breakfast menu served until 11:00am along with light snacks and lunches. Vegetarian options available. A good all round cafe for whatever time of the day. Lovely staff and fair prices.

I was doing a walk from Winchcombe and was delighted to see this café next to the GWR station at Toddington steam railway - I also go on where cyclists get their food from and there were certainly a lot of cyclists around as well as other people - which at least it means they get a good turnover of food, but can also mean it is very busy which it certainly was.

Plenty of snacks on offer but all of average quality. Cakes however are quite nice. Certainly not a coffee shop offering and caters for the transient passenger from the GWR Steam Railway. Self service and slow. Not a delight and offers little in nostagia more like modern times. Disappointing.

Visited with partner for lunch after taking a train trip. As we only had limited time and after reading other reviews, I knew we should head for here immediately upon disembarking the train to avoid a long wait for lunch. We arrived just as lunch service was starting and therefore had a bit of a wait before our meal was ready. You order and pay for your meal at the counter before choosing a table, and your food is brought to you. We both opted for the main hot lunch on offer that day, chicken, leek, and ham pie, served with mash and peas and sweetcorn; not fine dining but hearty and tasty. Accompanied by a welcome pot of tea; they even were able to offer decaffeinated tea. The service was friendly and efficient.

My wife and I called here during a visit to the GWSR and the July diesel gala. We were greeted warmly by chef when he unlocked the premises and invited us in. The lady who took our order was particularly helpful and went and checked with chef what GF bread was available. We placed our order and sat at our table and the food arrived shortly afterwards. I had a full English which consisted of 2 eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 sausages, half a tomato, half a fried slice, beans and a hash brown; for £5.95 this is a real bargain and sets you up for the day. All the food, including my wife's fried eggs on GF toast, was hot and extremely tasty. We had a tea and a cafetière of coffee all of which were first class. So good was the food at breakfast we went back for lunch and had the same very pleasant experience; great food, brilliant service and good value for money. If you are in the area this is the place to go.

I always love to get here early before the first train of the day departs, just so that I can squeeze in a good quality breakfast. I'm glad to say nothing was any different this year except....We arrived at Toddington at 8.50am. Nice and early enough to get the tickets at the stn ticket office and a good hearty breakfast. Except that it took 12 mins to get the tickets (and there were only 5 guys in front of us) which meant it was eating well into our yes, you guessed it, eating time. By the time we got over to the Flag and Whistle, it was already 5 past 9. Again, a small queue in front. Some had ordered breakfast baps and one other guy had ordered the full English, as would I. He was told the griddles were just warming up and there'd be a bit of a delay. He asked why and was told that the railway had said the cafe staff didn't need to get in so early. I thought I'd chance it, after all, there was still some 22'ish mins to go. Well, the other chap's breakfast turned up at 9.12am, and mine didn't follow until a whole 6 minutes later, which meant I had less than 10 mins to gulp it down, which luckily enough, I did but it meant I didn't get to really enjoy it. Suffice to say, it was up to the usual standard and yes, we just managed to get that first train of the day. However, the disappointing fact is, the cafe lost a good bit of revenue by opening that much later than previous gala's and not having the griddles raring to go. People were conscious of the time and sadly skipped a few breakfasts, some favouring the baps in the hope they'd be quicker. They were right.... Not the fault of the cafe team at all, although someone should have been in early just to get those griddles going. Maybe a lesson can still be learned after all.

More like a cafe then a real tea room. Asked for children lunch boxes but they where out which was fine. Asked if they could make a couple of sandwiches for young children they said no problem we received adult sandwiches with all the sides to much for kids and a waste of food. Asked for one extra spoon full of cream for one of three hot chocolates but they would not do it. Also they where really put out when we wanted to by a little bit of milk for a baby we didn't need a full cup. The Lemmon cake was dry. I would not recommend going here!

We held a Birthday party at the flag and whistle that fell on Fathers Day, so a really busy day for the staff. Throughout all of the arrangements Lynne and her team were really helpful, there were numerous dietary requirements that needed to be addressed. The day was a really hot day they were great, the room looked lovely, food was great. The whole experience of using Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway and the Flag and Whistle was superb. It all made for a memorable day.

This afternoon we were invited to a 70th birthday party at the "Flag & Whistle" there must have been at least 70 of us there. The food which consisted of mixed sandwiches, quiche, sausage rolls, crudités, scones with cream & jam, various cakes (all home made) were excellent and extremely plentiful. The staff that served us were polite, efficient and wore a smile. It was a very jolly afternoon (mostly motor enthusiasts) and the atmosphere was great.

What a credit this cafe is to the volunteers who run it. We were very impressed by the friendly efficient staff, the cleanliness of the cafe and the superb food. I had home made minestrone soup with a generous portion of French bread and butter and my wife had a bacon bap. The quality and quantity of the food was superb. Well done to everyone who made our visit so memorable.

We were looking for a place for mid morning coffee. We thought we were going to a garden centre, but came across this place. It is part of a heritage steam train line, Toddington being one of its stations. The Flag and Whistle is steam train themed and run by volunteers. Quite a pleasant place, and the service was friendly. The station area is also quite interesting to wander around.

My wife and I called in here before our trip on the railway. I ordered the full English, but my wife is vegetarian and gluten intolerant. The charming lady who served us said she would consult chef and returned to say there was GF bread, would scrambled egg on GF toast be acceptable? It was and we ordered accordingly. The food arrived shortly afterwards, was piping hot and good value. My wife gave a double thumbs up for her eggs which she said were some of the best she had had. If you are visiting the railway this is a good place to get food; on summer days they also run a very popular barbecue. Enjoy!

We had the Full English before setting off on the driving/firing course. Service was friendly, food piping hot, good quality and well cooked. At lunch we returned for the picnic lunch provided having selected our baguette filling earlier in the day. We both had a lovely fresh baguette with plenty of tuna mayonnaise. Banana, crisps, water, a cake and a kit-Kat. More than we actually needed. They have a basic cafe menu which we didn't sample but based on what we did have I'm sure all would be good.

We found this place by luck as we took a wrong turn! Had dinner and liked it so much we came back for dinner the following night. Great food with generous portions, very friendly and helpful staff, but not pushy. Good local beer and a nice atmosphere. Sensible prices and therefore very good value for money overall. We will definitely go there again when next in the Cheltenham area.
