The Flag in Colchester

This was my second time here both eating and sleeping. The first was as a group of 15, this with a group of 32. The welcome was warm, the accommodation is lovely, the food was great and the attention we got was fantastic. Never over bearing but always just "there" when something was needed. In particular, as a Coeliac, there was plenty of choice on the menu providing me with GF onion rings, a rare treat! Really excellent staff especially Hannah. I couldn't recommend this place highly enough. We will definitely return, perhaps with a smaller group next time.

Couldn’t fault the flag. Had a lovely time. The meal was outstanding. The server waiters were very good and on point even the restaurant was busy. I highly recommend the flag. The room was lovely just lacking a full length mirror.

I planned my sisters baby shower here, and it was second to none!! It was so easy to book and liaise with the staff (manager Hannah) who were so accommodating from start to finish. We went in to see the space and immediately fell in love. The space is gorgeous and right up our street with the greens and cosy feel! Hannah (who is incredible, and as my sister said, is a credit to the Flag!) sat down with us and explained all of our options in depth. The chef even came out and discussed what our menu could look like and did us some bespoke dishes to suit our needs! Come to the day, we had 25 people, some with dietary requirements and it was absolutely no trouble for them! Ellea (who is also a credit to the flag!) was so attentive and kept me updated on plans throughout, whilst providing exceptional service to everyone!! We also had some gorgeous cocktails which were on theme with the colour of the baby shower! Everyone loved the food and the range of selection, as well as the gorgeous venue! Can’t thank the staff (Hannah and Ellea) enough for making this such a special event for us! Cannot recommend this hidden gem enough!! We used @bybankexo for the arch and balloons @shor.teex for the personalised cookies.

Stumbled across this place by accident and I am so pleased we did. The food is absolutely delicious. Beautifully cooked, highly recommend having something off of the specials menu. The staff are always extremely friendly and great service. Already returned twice since.

Stayed here to visit our daughter who is at Essex University. The rooms are spotless, with Rituals hand and body lotion in the bathroom. Food is excellent we ate there twice and is was exceptional and the staff could not do enough for us especially Kenna such a lovely girl she made us feel so welcome.Would definately go back

I had my baby shower here at the weekend and it was just exceptional. From the moment we booked it, the staff have been amazing. A special shout out to the manager, Hannah, who is a credit to The Flag. We had the dining space as you walk in, and we were allowed to decorate it as we wished and set the tables up as we needed. It was a perfect space for 25 of us. We had welcome drinks made too which fitted the colour theme of the baby shower. The food was incredible, having to cater to 25 people, some with dietary requirements was no mean feat, but the food was very much enjoyed and not one plate was left uncleared! I have had comments from guests that they were so impressed with everything. Thank you to everyone for making it a special day, from the chef who helped us devise our own brunch menu, to Hannah and the staff. If you are looking for somewhere to hold a brunch/lunch or dinner in a nice setting, please don't hesitate to go to The Flag!

Setting lovely, beautifully decorated and fresh. Food good quality. Service good except one of us was still eating chips when the plates were taken away, we were then rushed when we didn’t order dessert which was not entirely acceptable.

For our Golden Wedding we were looking for an informal location for our immediate family celebration. The family all lived in excess of 200 miles away so on-site accomodation was therefore preferable. The rooms were spotless, comfortable and quiet. The food was pre-ordered and delivered efficiently and to exact specification. The service was attentive but not intrusive. This experience matched our previous visits where we had enjoyed the food an atmosphere.

What a lovely restaurant in this recently refurbished pub. Friendly staff who are eager to please and great food. We have been a number of times and the Sunday lunch is great, reasonably priced , piping hot, great Yorkshire puddings and well cooked vegetables . Varied menu, good wine list and lots of cocktails to choose from. Definitely worth a visit and will keep returning.

The restaurant is tastefully decorated, the staff are so professional, friendly and patient, there were 7 of us and the starters, mains and desserts was really enjoyed by all, the food was faultless, we will definitely be returning soon

A weekend stay here has led to a mixed review for the Flag. Good points are the clean, new feel to the rooms and restaurant with quality furnishings and comfortable seating. It’s clear a lot of money has been invested in the exterior and interior design - but who on earth decided to festoon the walls with plastic plants? Truly awful - the tacky, cheap green plastic is everywhere. Our room was lacking a wardrobe which seems very odd for what aims to be a boutique hotel. Breakfast - poor for the price. A few slices of ham and cheese left out un-refrigerated and uncovered didn’t appeal. And the weird crockery / cutlery was just trying too hard - gold coloured tiny spoons and badly designed glass teapots that let a stream of tea leaves (yes, really) into the cup. I was given something that looked like a saucepan from a dolls house with a thimbleful of milk in it - just ridiculous. One waitress in particular was robotic in her ‘that’s absolutely fine, no worries at all’ response to everything. Other staff were friendly but completely overstretched in the evening meaning a long wait for service. Overall, this hotel and restaurant just feels like it’s trying too hard to be high end, but failing by keeping costs down with tiny portions and poor quality breakfast offerings. The owners need to seriously up their game to compete locally - and for goodness sake - lose the plastic plants!

Absolutely Superb - we visited Sunday Lunchtime with friends and we had 4 beautifully cooked & well presented Roast Dinners & Desserts, food was cooked to perfection and so tasty. Staff were very friendly, polite & attentive. Restaurant was impeccably clean & very welcoming. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone, it was the best Roast Dinner I have ever tasted, Well Done

We had some friends over from London who are quite the ‘foodies’ so we picked the best we knew of locally and The Flag didn’t disappoint. We hadn’t managed to get back there since the first few opening weeks so we were well overdue a visit. The decor has been done by someone with a very good eye and hits a high end mark without being stuff. Just cool and relaxed. The food was excellent for all four of us. I particularly enjoyed my old favourite of the Indian Burger. Such a good flavour combination. Staff were excellent and attentive. Couldn’t fault it and won’t leave it so long next time!

We arrived for Sunday lunch and greeted by a really friendly face.. There were .3 of us and we all chose the roast pork Although we don’t normally have starters , the menu sounded so good we decided to share the gyoza .. ( glad we did) I can honestly say , the Roast was the best we’d had in a long time , and the service was perfect. If your ever near wivenhoe or surrounding areas Don’t go anywhere else on a Sunday 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
