We attended Friday lunchtime on 20-09-2024. We were the only people in the restaurant which felt awkward especially when the lady at the front of house kept joining in with our conversations. In fairness she must have been bored. Anyway we had 2 mains. Fish pie and Korean Burger. The burger was small but tasty. The fish pie was microwave hot and came with seasonal veg, 2 small carrots and a floret of broccoli. We had a pint of Landlord and half a lager with the meal which came to around £35.00. The whole experience lasted around half an hour and we couldn't wait to go. I feel as if the Farmers Boy has lost its way. It used to be renowned for its food and service but clearly this is no longer the case. Perhaps having 4 menus isnt helping. Time to refocus I feel. All in all, below average and a bit awkward.

Farmers Fest today so we went, looking forward to a beer and some live music. The queue to be served was out of the door and after 15 minutes we, along with others, decided to go elsewhere. We really like this place but for an event like this they got it so wrong as we heard quite a few disgruntled people leave. "Can't get a beer Fest is what it should be called" is what I heard before even getting to the queue. Sorry Farmers Boy. We will return as its a lovely place, but on a quieter day.

Came here with the family, I have special dietary requirements so often have to travel long distances to find somewhere accommodating. The staff here were more than happy to meet my needs, the atmosphere was like eating in a fancy hotel. Service was very quick with all food made fresh. Plenty of vegan/vegetarian options available. Portion sizes were more than fair, many of us couldn’t possibly finish. Variety on the menu was lovely and the bar has more options than most places I’ve been. If you’re passing through or live near, you must try this place, I guarantee you’ll be leaving a review just like this one!

Met with friends for lunch. Was a little quiet but as a group we had plenty to catch up on so not a big issue. Good menu choice from panninis to full blown 3 course meals. Service was good and meals brought out promptly. Couple of gripes, the puff pastry lidded chicken pie was not really a pie but a bowl of chicken and leeks in sauce with a circle of pastry on top guess clue was in the description but....please please put a real pie on menu again Vegetable presentation lacked finesse on some meals Dipping sauce on chicken skewers didn't taste very nice Would eat here again though

So glad when it reopened as we used to be regular customers to the restaurant. So disappointed at the choice on the menu and even more disappointed when the food arrived. Recommended by someone who used to visit a lot years ago. She had to admit it was nowhere near as good now. I'd describe it as style over substance. Ordered olive and sourdough sharing starter...when it appeared, not an olive in sight. Queried with waiter, he came back and said "oh sorry we've run out of olives!" Some battered courgette on the board was totally bland. Main courses, all four of us had different things and all four of us were fighting over the salt and pepper. The chef needs to learn to season their food. I had the fish, and the sauce itself was nice, but the tiny portion of thinly sliced potatoes (which likely amounted to about 3 baby new potatoes in total) and 2 pieces of tenderstem brocoli that came with it for the £16 price tag was taking the mick. I wouldn't go back. Long way to go for bang average food with an elevated price tag.

We've been here a few times for a quick lunch. The first time was great. Friendly, helpful lady behind the bar, decent real ale in good condition and the food was nice. Second time we ordered the same food and it was quite different in portion, presentation and taste. A lot less satisfying. The young guys behind the bar are sweet but not very knowledgeable or experienced. The third time we ordered differently and it was OK. The server insisted on cramming 2 courses worth of cutlery onto our small table despite us only having one course. Because rules. This place would be nice if it was a little more consistent and t he staff were a bit better trained. Dog-friendly, fairly comfortable with distinct bar and eating areas and a good fire.

The front of house staff were all quite young and myself and my fiancée both agreed it was some of the best and friendliest service we’ve received anywhere, all of them were fantastic, friendly, attentive and professional. Next up the food….. best Sunday roast my fiancée could remember having, and my Fish and chips were also great. We live quite close to The Farmers Boy and often pop in for a drink but had stopped going for food as we thought it was nothing special. In the last month we have been 3 times, what an improvement, they have made. A tapas menu which is great for a starter to share, the main menu has good wholesome food at a reasonable price. A nive choice of puddings. There is a good wine menu which is also well priced. All in all it is much improved and we are lucky to have such a great pub/ restaurant in the village.

I suppose Boxing Day might not be the easiest day to staff and on the positive the place is very stylish and the serving staff, despite being very young, were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately though, we went for the food and some of that was not great. First we waited over 90 minutes for our main course. When it did arrive, 2 of us had ordered fish which could well have been frying for that full hour and a half. It was very dark brown, impossible to cut at first, then when it eventually shattered through blunt force, the fish inside the batter had disappeared entirely leaving a hard rubbery line where it had once been. Two of our party were older ladies who don't like to complain so we didn't get the chance to send it back, however it was obvious as it left the kitchen the meals were not right and I would have expected the staff to reject it rather than serve it in the first place. Should have known I suppose as it was the only place we could get a reservation in, that it might not be the best. Disappointed and won't be back. Shame when they've made so much effort with the decor and ambiance that the food let it down completely.

We drink in here most weekends but don’t often dine in the restaurant. We should do it more often! I opted for the trio of fish followed by pheasant. We had bread and butter while waiting for our starters. Both dishes were beautiful and I would definitely recommend them. The pheasant came with rolls of bacon and side dishes of vegetables with gravy. I then shared at cheese and biscuits which was accompanied with celery, chutney and grapes. The service on the night was excellent. The restaurant was fairly quiet for a Saturday but January is not a busy month. Nobody had anything to complain about and the bill was very reasonable considering the drinks we had. We will all be dining here again and we are fortunate to have this lovely pub and restaurant on our doorstep.

I mean they were dangerously hot we were warned not to touch them clearly not good for families with young kids If this was my business I'd be playing it safe + serving food on warm plates not plates so hot that 1 accidental touch means a burn

We booked as a family of 4 for Sunday lunch to celebrate my recent promotion at work. Arrive and we were sat in the room off the bar (or the forgotten room as we now call it). Things started okay in that the waitress came over to say hello and set the table. She left us for 5 minutes and then came to take our drinks order. Drinks came back, but no menus were forthcoming, so we asked the bar man. He gave us two menus (between 4 of us) and no explanation of what the roasts were etc. My wife went to ask what the options were. A waitress came over and apologised and brought more menus over. By the time we actually had a menu and somebody came to take our order, we'd been sat there about half an hour. A pain, but still willing to give things a shot. Starters arrived after about 45 Minutes and were very nice. Once we had finished the starters the waitress came to clear the table (eventually). No asking if we wanted another drink etc. we then sat for a further half an hour (during which time the waitress came over and asked if we had seen the dessert menu) before we complained and asked where our main courses were. Were told that they had a big table in and our food would be a further 10 minutes. At which point we asked for the bill. We had been sat for 1 hour and 35 minutes and managed to eat a Yorkshire pudding starter each and a drink. We were told our main course was coming, but we insisted on the bill. A meek apology, again blaming having a big table in (well if it impacts everybody else, don't book a big table or staff appropriately). £36 for drinks and starters. No proper apology, no mention of a discount for the little food we had eaten and celebration ruined. I am not one for complaining or storming out, but I have never come across such poor, slow and clumsy customer service. I had heard various reports that the Boy wasn't as good as before, but now I really wish I had booked somewhere else. Will not be going back in a hurry. A real shame.

First of all I would like to say I have been going here for 5 years or more. Probably once every couple of months and food is always excellent.Last few visits I have noticed prices seem to be creeping up which I don't normally mind if food is nice. However I went on Friday 18 August 2017 and was very disappointed, not by the food (which was very nice again) but by the prices. £7.10 for a glass of average wine£9.00 for 4 small pieces of cheese & 6 biscuits. I did mention this to the waitress and although she was pleasant she obviously had no idea what to do or say and simply smiled.Surely there is no need for this much mark up & although the food is nice if I want to spend that much money I can go to much more opulent restaurants.I will probably return but I will be watching the prices and i will not be having wine or cheese and biscuits.

We chose The Farmer's Boy from the TripAdvisor's reviews and from having checked it out a few days before. It serves good quality well presented pub food and was clearly popular because it was full. Took Icelandic guests to dinner last Friday night.A warm welcome in a lovely dining room (separate entrance from the pub)A fairly concise menu but wide enough to give a decent choice, particularly with a Tapas menu to supplement starters. All dishes were very good and nicely presented. Substantial portions meant that we skipped desserts. Icelanders rarely skip anything ! but on this occasion they were more than well fed.We only live a couple of miles away and have previously called a couple of times for bar snacks which were very good. After a superb meal last month it was time for another visit. And oh boy what a difference. The steak, the chips, the salad, as good as you could get. Superb! But last month we had a small, but welcome and tasty, serving of bread and olives. And a bottle of wine. This time: straight into the steak and a bottle of something that even the bottle's label admitted it was not wine. Inexcusable penny pinching: destroys the evening and will not be back until they deliver what is promised

I have had problems in the past with this pub/restaurant, with its limited, overpriced but beautifully cooked and presented menus. There is now a steak night offer on Wednesday and oh boy what an offer. An entertaining pre meal drink in the bar before the meal, with some very witty banter from the locals. Shown to our table by a charming young lady, we ordered the steaks. Two steaks plus all the trimmings for £30 including a bottle of wine, already sounds like a good offer. But the bread and olives before, then the beautifully cooked steaks with a very good salad, mushroom, tomato, chips - fantastic. I will certainly be returning. But watch this space, as we were shown the new tapas menu, and the regular menu is now extended and more sensibly priced. Will I be back? Absolutely, for steak night, but also to sample the rest of chef's fantastic cooking

The Farmers Boy is a longstanding favourite of ours for Sunday lunch and we usually order off the Set Menu, which is fantastic value, but on this occasion, and due to the fact there was no roast beef on offer again, we decided to order off the A La Carte menu. The starters were delicious (as always) and priced well, but we were very disappointed with the main for the price charged. Rump of lamb with Duphonoise potatoes and Ratatouille was £23.50 and the slice, or rather the slither of lamb was about the size of my palm!!! The meal tasted lovely and I realise that lamb can be an expensive meat but in no way was this dish worth the price charged.

Been for a meal before here and I was looking forward to another visit. However I was left disappointed especially by the menu in a recent visit on the Saturday before Mother's Day. I found the menu uninspiring and not very imaginative which was a contrast to the last time I had a meal. There was only the a La Carte menu with no special board well if there was it wasn't offered. There wasn't a poultry item at all and for someone who likes to try new favours nothing appealed with the items such as Fish and Chips , Braised Oxtail with Champ mash or Paprika Pork steak with spring veg hardly inspiring. The food we had was of a decent quality but felt that they had sat under an hot plate too long.Would I try it again? Yes I would but only if the menu had more imagination like it had the previous times.

I had black pudding and smoked bacon starter with poached egg on top - one measly round slice of black pudding, left me wanting two more slices. The egg was nicely poached and the two small pieces of crispy bacon were OK. They had run out of pork chops and we were the first ones in the restaurant, so I had oxtail - three thumb sized bones on a bed of colcannon mash so I ordered parmentier potatoes which were inedible as they were overcooked to a cinder. Sweet was rum baba which was OK, but not exactly the shape I had expected; rather it looked like bits of a rum baba that had collapsed into a heap.

We followed a 5 mile walk around Shepley organised by the parish council which ended at the Farmers Boy pub. On arriving at the pub we were made welcome by the staff and there was plenty to pick from the menu. Food was very good.

We decided on the spur of the moment to call in for a light lunch. If you want you can dine in the formal dining room, but we opted for the more casual bar. The "Golden Sheep" beer was superb, beautifully kept and very drinkable! We both decided on sandwiches - the hot roast pork was awesome - full marks for separate gravy and crackling just as it should be! The avocado on toast also very tasty. AND I cannot recommend more highly the divine almond and orange cake + clotted cream + oranges in whisky....to die for!!!!If this was the standard of lunch-time food, then I can only imagine the evening menu would be just as good. We will definitely be back!

We were looking forward to our evening as we had family visiting from Newcastle. The staff are lovely - attentive & welcoming. But the good news stops there I'm afraid. We had the fish & chips, the batter on the fish was just short of inedible (even though we didn't eat it) - really soggy & didn't taste properly cooked. Our fellow diners had the Steak pie which was ok if a little uninspiring. The real joke was the £10 cheesboard, I have never seen such miniscule amounts of cheese that weren't on a mousetrap! We actually laughed when it was served!£180 for 4 people, which is ok for a good experience, unfortunately we didn't have one.

Had the most wonderful meal for Valentines Day - as always, the service was very good and the quality of the food outstanding. We visit this pub on a very regular basis and we have never been disappointed - would recommend.

This must be another one of Yorkshires best kept secrets, which is unfortunate, because its so refreshing to visit a restaurant and feel like you have genuinely had an enjoyable experience, the Farmers Boy did this. From arrival and pre lunch drink in the bar, nothing was too much, the staff were welcoming and friendly, and before you had even seen a menu you knew it was going to be good. The restaurant which is attached via a door to the bar area, seemingly in the decor of a converted barn, was light and welcoming, with a menu of traditional and local fare that absolutely spoils you for choice, and all at sensible prices. The restaurant service, and quality of food did not let matters down, it was excellent. We will be back. This is the best restaurant I have been in outside of London for a long time, very highly recommended.

Went for a meal with my wife. Instantly made welcome, and taken to our table. Drinks order taken promptly. Staff very pleasant and professional. I had the beer battered haddock, a good large piece of nicely battered fish cooked just right, with peas, tartare sauce and chips, delicious. A couple of cask ales on tap. Nice atmosphere, well worth visiting. We have been several times before, and never a bad meal.

We know the Farmers boy but think it's gone down since it originally opened. We visited with another couple for dinner. A welcome smile but the staff didn't know what the dishes were on the menu. The starters were fine but we had to wait a long time and then the main course was just ridiculously long to arrive. We did look at the dessert menu but it was so late we thought we wouldn't bother.

We went for our 20th anniversary meal on 4Nov as we'd been to The Hare and Hounds for our first date. Although it was early on a Monday evening the fire was lit and the place welcoming. Had a nice meal, bottle of wine etc. While talking to one of the staff I mentioned it was 20 years to the day since we'd had our first date there. Low and behold 5 minutes later a platter with a selection of puddings arrived, on the house. Lovely touch, helped make the evening even more enjoyable.😊

Exceptional service from our server Tom, couldn’t help us enough we swapped seats due to my wife being pregnant which was no bother at all and kept checking in on us! He’s a wonderful asset to the team. Lovely room and a comfortable nights stay. Would definitely visit again.

We booked a meal here after reading good reviews and we were not disappointed! The staff could not be more friendly or attentive and the bar/restaurant was so warm and welcoming as we arrived during cold, wet and windy weather. The beautiful old open fire was especially welcome. Everything we had was delicious- good quality home cooked food. We really can’t fault anything at all and will certainly be back. Our only regret was that we couldn’t stay longer as we had to get to an event in Holmfirth. Next time we’ll stay for pudding and a few more drinks too!

Love the Fleece - go regularly for lunch. Food was excellent as always but new front of house man absolutely miserable. Was ignored for almost 5 minutes on entering - no ‘hello’ or ‘I’ll just be a minute’. No smiles, no chat. Staff here have always been exceptional so it was a bit of a shock. Didn’t let him spoil our lunch though.
