The Falls of Dochart Inn in Stirling

tl;dr: Great staff, amazing food, disgusting dirty old rooms with animal fur, dirt, dust, crumbs, and broken fixtures. We first arrived after a harrowing three hour drive along a "scenic" route from Inverness. Part of this drive took place in the dark along tiny and (to me) terrifying country back roads. So when we finally got to the Inn our nerves were shot and we were desperate for some rest. We were greeted warmly in the main part of the inn by the wonderful staff and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the bar area. We ordered some food before settling in and it was great! After dinner we hauled our luggage up to our room and that's when everything fell apart. The inn itself is small and obviously dated- the stairs up to our room were narrow and steep and getting two 50 lbs. suitcases up them was a truly athletic feat for us. You can argue that this is a self inflicted problem and to be expected of an older establishment and I'd agree- but it's worth noting. The room itself looked the same as what was advertised on their website. Emphasis on "looked". Across almost every surface seemed to be a layer of dog or cat fur. This included our bedding- even the pillows! The sheets themselves had several stains with the fabric also being rough and uncomfortable. Besides the coating of dog/cat fur the floor and walls were also downright unclean. There were crumbs and dust on the floor- especially the corners and the walls had cob webs. Many of the fixtures were run down as well. With a leaky and unusable sink tap and a chipped and scuffed up tub. Speaking of the tub: I ran a bath in the hopes that a warm soak would blunt the shock of finding myself in a run down, dirty, old room and when I got in I was again surprised by filth. Tiny white hairs started to float to the surface all around me and I very quickly drained the tub and crouched inside with the included shower head and washed myself off that way instead. Climbing out of the tub I had to lay down a small path of hand towels to protect my wet feet from the aforementioned animal fur on the floor. This animal fur I keep bringing up really was covering everything and besides being disgusting to find in your bedroom it also was an immediate health concern for us. My other half is extremely allergic to cat fur and coming into contact with is causes reactions both to her skin and triggers rhinitis. So making zero assumptions we stripped the bed of most of the bedding and tried to sleep flat on our backs with no blankets on the off chance it was cat fur. At this point you may be asking why we didn't request another room or speak to the staff- staff who at this point had been amazing and wonderfully helpful! Well as I said we arrived very late and by the time we realized the full extent of our situation no one seemed to be around. The portion of the inn we were in was locked to the rest of the building with only exits to the outside. Which is understandable for a small inn.- again the staff were great! By morning we had barely slept and were so overwhelmed and upset by the room we decided to leave early and drive BACK up to Inverness. We loaded up the car and again found no staff available to speak to so decided to make the best of the situation and wander around the village. This was great- wonderful place. We came back to the Inn just in time for the breakfast we forgot was included and were treated to another amazing meal with wonderful help from the staff (who were now there). I cannot emphasize how great we were treated by the employees here. Our main issue is with the management of the inn and the disgusting state of our room. Anyways after breakfast we explained we were leaving early and departed. The best part of my stay at this inn was seeing it fade into the distance and we drove away. The ONLY reason this is not a one star review is because of the wonderful staff working here.

Very nice cosy pub. Popped in for a pint and to feed Grandson dinner. Child's meal excellent and beer also. Will recommend and return.

Well we feel we need to restore the balance , as this beautiful old Inn has very mixed reviews. firstly it’s in the most beautiful setting and has real charm and character. There was 6 of us for a family meal which we booked but arrived an hour early after a long drive they accommodated us no problem, it was very busy and had a lovely atmosphere with the log fire going . Staff were very friendly we all had 6 different meals all excellent especially the cullen skink ! we had short waits but that’s absolutely fine we were not in a rush and on our holidays. we would definitely return and we did buy the most amazing smoked salmon from there own Smokey .

They forgot our food order left us waiting for 45mins. When we drew their attention to the fact we had not received the order they didn’t seem that bothered They offered to throw something together in five minutes but that really doesn’t suggest appetising food. Terrible experience

Booked a table for a meal at the start of December. Received an email from Open Table on the day to confirm we were still attending, replied to say we were. Arrived at the restaurant to find it closed. No phone call, no email. Really poor service. Wouldn't trust this place. Thankfully we were accommodated by the Killin Hotel where we had a really nice meal.

Good location. Quote nice ambience. Food underwhelming. Small portions, not heated. I had haggis bon bons, they were good but the potatoes that went with were luke warm and the turnip pureee,,,,l hard to find so little of it. For the money not worth it.

We chose to eat here after visiting for a drink the day before. On both visits the staff were attentive and friendly. The lady behind the bar loved our dog and gave her so much attention which was lovely to see. The food was very nice and huge portions. The pub has a great traditional atmosphere! We will definitely return when we are in the area again.

Starters were fine but main course was unpleasant. Tiny piece of overcooked fish nestled above a sea of cucumber and tomatoes in olive oil, strangely called salsa verde. Also the venison burger tasted like beef burger .

I have just spent a few days here. The food and drink was of usual offering (Brakes or Bidfood style) of convenience products masqueraded as fresh home cooking. Combined with an hefty price and you get the classic tourist in Scotland offering: really nothing special. The building itself is very old; and shows it. The exterior, clearly, undergoes no cleaning and the maintenance evokes images of high-pitched red shorted mice! The building also leaks like a sieve and while there (during heavy rain) I watched as the water seeped through a wall, filled the hearth of the famous never-lit fireplace, spilled over and puddled outside the front door (a door which could have it's very own review). Full of agency staff, dirty, and clearly very badly managed. If you find yourself in Killin with no food options for the evening and this is the only place, then unlucky for you - could be worse!

We stayed in Killin - which is a terrific place, with wonderful people. Depending on when you go to the restaurant, the service is very different. Sheenie (sorry if I’ve spelled this incorrectly) is on it and everything works really well when she is working. On the other days, the service was totally hit and miss. Order one thing, another comes. Ask for a drink ‘we don’t have that’ and there it is behind the bar. IMHO, the owner needs to get a grip of this as this place has immense potential and the food is really lovely. The steak was excellent. The cheesy posh chips are tremendous. The salad with the burger is circa 1970 and needs to be updated. The cheese board is very good and would be outstanding if the mix was with some non-smoked cheeses too. The Scottish tapas went down a storm - as did the local brew!

Stayed in the byre end of August. Cottage had everything we needed. Only disappointment was outside. Weeds everywhere ( I pulled them up by the door ) grass not cut and in front of the inn the planters all needed weeding. Just a bit of maintenance needed.

Stopped on our way home from Callander stood waiting to be seated as numerous signs told us to. waitress passed 3 times & not once acknowledged us I know she was serving tables but a quick I’ll be right with you would of done. Male & female behind the bar looked us up & down as if we shouldn’t be there.Eventually the waitress came ,she a face on her that would have curdled milk everyone can have a bad day but remember who is keeping you in work Jo Public she threw a couple of menus on a table & said I’ll be back for your order no smile nothing that’s when we got up & left this used to be a great place to eat but not now absolutely dreadful.Customer service non existent such a pity place is in need of new staff 😡

On first sight this looked like an idyllic place to have Sunday lunch. However the service was poor, mix up over booking, the waitress seemed confused and didn't want to engage. The roast dinner itself had to rate as the worst I've had. Potatoes more boiled than roast. Overpowering herb on the chicken and tasteless gravy. Food was also luke warm. £48 for two drinks and two very poor dinners. We won't be returning

Booked table - waited in bar in what seemed like dis-organised chaos Ordered drinks at table and food. Food arrived before drinks . We asked for drinks but had to remind staff what we'd ordered! Food arrived swiftly. One plate taken away as waiter said it was wrong pasta dish. Replaced with incorrect dish which was taken away and original dish returned - obviously it was luke warm. No napkins on table. Nice bottle of water on table but no glasses and none arrived. During visit. All in all what should have been a beautiful Saturday night out was ruined.

We arrived and checked into our room. Beautiful decor, stunning views from our window. Massive luxurious bath. We expected a table to be available for guests but were told we would have to wait until 8pm as the restaurant was fully booked.
