There are so many positives to The Elks Head, which I will comment on here, so it seems a shame that I feel the need to give it a poor rating. The rating does not reflect on the front of house staff that served us at all, or the food which was lovely. I had a party of 6 booked in for a one night stay. Pre arrival communication was great, booking confirmed, I was asked if our party would like to book a table for an evening meal as they get busy. Upon arrival check in was easy, the bar staff where great, very friendly and a true asset to the the team. The food was lovely, which I believe is cooked by Rob, the owner. Breakfast choices were given to the team in the evening as we were leaving early and we were informed they would be ready for 8.30 once Rob Owner/Chef , arrived on site at 8am. Two of us however needed to leave before breakfast was served. A very positive experience so far. The poor rating is purely down to the lack of response from the owner to an on site issue that arose overnight, and how it was dealt with. Staying at the rear of the Inn, we awoke early to find that there was no electricity or water to any of our rooms or the annex where our rooms where located. Other parts of the Inn still had lights on, so this was a problem that was restricted to the rear of the building only it would seem. Each room has the mobile numbers of the owners for any out of hours contact. I initially rang Rob's number and left a voice mail with the issue and asking him to contact myself or arrange for someone to attend site. With no response, I did the same with the other number and then once again to Rob's phone. I had no response from anyone from the Elks Head. I and one of my party had to leave due to our plans, unable to shower or make use of the facilities provided. The remainder of my party where left trying to find out what was happening. Knowing that they too where on a very tight time schedule to leave following breakfast. Rob arrived on site at 8am, and immediately the power and water was back on. When my party spoke with him about it, his response was that he hadn't received any calls or messages from myself, what was he meant to do about it? and why were we up so early anyway? There was no apology, or accountability of the problem. For the problem to be resolved immediately Rob arrived on site would seem that he was aware of it, knew he had to sort it immediately upon arrival, and was fully aware of how to fix it. This makes me think that it's not the first time it's happened, and therefore could happen again to other guests. Problems happen, power and water can go off, I appreciate that. But, if you provide numbers for out of hours contact and then ignore calls and messages, tell customers that you never received any calls or messages, and do not take accountability for a problem within your business then it is poor, and is therefore reflected in my rating. To be open and transparent, I chose to leave this here so that The Elks Head have the opportunity to respond publicly, and then others can form their own opinions of what there experience of The Elks Head may look like.

We had a cheeky midweek night away at the Elk’s Head. Jen, Rob and the team gave wonderful service. Dinner was amazing - perfectly prepared and presented. As well as more standard pub food, the specials were truly ‘special’ and delicious! Dessert followed and the local cheese board at the end of the meal was the perfect conclusion to a splendid evening. The wine list was competitively priced - we enjoyed the Argentinian Malbec. The room was comfortable and extremely good value for money. Our stay was topped off with a superb breakfast. Thank you Jen, Rob and Team - we’ll be back!

Six of us stayed here at the weekend to celebrate a couple of birthdays. None of us had visited before but we were all very impressed and found it to be excellent value for money. We dined in the restaurant and the three of us who had the venison loin thought it the best venison we’d ever tasted. The beef shin and fish and chips also got very good reviews. For the b&b rate the breakfast was also very good, offering a choice of full English, including a vegetarian option, bacon and sausage sandwiches as well as various eggs Benedict/Royale/Florentine. Our room was snug but big enough and country-cottage cute with a generously sized bathroom. The pub itself is in a beautiful spot and we’d gladly return for the beer garden in the summer.

Arrived early doors with muddy boots and 2 dogs so were sat in side area. Not the nicest area of the pub and a bit chilly but these are sacrifices you make sometimes. However, staff were excellent and the food was first class pub grub. Venison burgers were excellent.

Well what a find. Welcomed on our arrival by friendly staff. A bit of a wait for our food, but well worth the wait. I had roast beef which was amazing. We had a last minute booking for a large group. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the location is picturesque. The low rating was due to poor options for vegetarians. The only option is a spinach and cheese dish served with boiled carrots and broccoli and cauliflower cheese. They ran out of cauliflower cheese and there was no roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes or roast vegetables for the vegetarian option and no gravy. The meal was okay but a bit disappointing especially compared to the meat options and cost £18 for just the main.

This was ok for a one night stay but wouldn't want to be there longer. Staff were great, everywhere clean. Good value at £100 inc breakfast but failed to get 5 out of 5 due to the feeling of corners being cut around the whole place. Staff appeared to be just short of one body most of the time. TV was the smallest I've ever seen in a hotel. Watching Wimbledon would have been impossible as you would not have seen the ball! The latch plate for the bathroom door fell off. Bent and held on by one long screw whose hole was far too big. Breakfast was very disappointing. I suspect more deep frying was going on than should have been and a general feeling that the chef had the day off and his assistant was cooking it. 3 out of 5 for brekky. With a few detail improvements this would be a 5 out of 5 and could charge more per room. To recap though - fine for a one nighter.

We stayed for one night whilst touring about on our motorbikes. The location is stunning ..we are still in awe!. Fabulous decor throughout and a super garden to sit out in the sunshine and enjoy the views. Our rooms were spotlessly clean though a little small and lacking in toiletries for the price charged (we pack light and all other accommodation had more than adequate toiletries). The shower control in our room was broken which we didn't know until it was being used but it should have been noted when being cleaned as it was obvious. Great choices on both the evening meal and breakfast menus and the food was delicious. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We throughly enjoyed our stay here. The stunning location and views far outweighed any minor grumbles for us and we will definitely return when in the area again.

Stayed here for two nights on a Travelzoo deal. Room was a bit on the small side but adequate and clean and tidy. Location is a bit remote, nothing much else around, but a good base for exploring the local area. Excellent breakfast with a good choice of hot and cold food. We had an evening meal on the first night of our stay. Menu is fairly limited but something for everyone. Prices are probably at the top end of average. We had steak pie with chips and peas. The pie was absolutely delicious and the chips were some of the best I’ve ever tasted. My only criticism is that for the money I would have preferred some fresh vegetables rather than frozen peas. A special mention to the gentleman working there (didn’t get his name but he said he’d only been there five weeks). He seemed to do everything, checked us in/out, served behind the bar and served evening meals and breakfast. He was very friendly and polite. Not sure when he found time to eat/sleep! Overall we enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone else.

Stayed for one night and had an evening meal. Room small but nicely appointed and spotlessly clean. Being used to a large bed we found the standard double bed rather uncomfortable bit I guess it's what you are used to. Tea and coffee facilities but perhaps some biscuits could be added. Small TV screen. Breakfast served in a pleasant light and airy room. Some good options and the 'Full Elks Head' was tasty and plentiful. Evening meal the night before was taken in the cosy bar area. Service was good and food well presented and enjoyable. Had quite a wait for deserts to be served however and they were the least enjoyable aspect of the meal. Custard tart quite stodgy and average at best. Overall though a very enjoyable stay.

Used to come here often before covid for lunch & bring visitors of an evening. First time since the takeover today. Tablecloths on tables 🤷♀️ pool table removed ☹️ very small menu (not always a bad thing) but very disappointed here. We were the only 2 people in there & they still gave us the wrong lunches. The ham was a very dodgy looking pink & very grey in parts, loads of fat, I mean loads of fat, resorted to cutting it all out, waiter tried to clear the table while I was still eating my lunch, & to find out at the bill paying its £7.50 for a GLASS of Sauvignon ( I dont pay that for a bottle) no way we will go back. Taking the p*ss. Menu - lobster & guinea fowl at lunch or a sandwich is just not what you want in a country pub. Shame. Another rural pub thats gone in the wrong direction. & will certainly not have any local custom thorughout winter when they need it to survive.

The quality of the food and the service was wonderful. Four meals, each prepared with clearly fresh ingredients and presented together (something that so often seems beyond pub kitchens). The service was attentive without being ovebearing and there were several vegan and vegetarian options (unusual for eateries in what is a fairly remote area.)The bill was reasonable - wine, beer, two puddings and four mains - for about half what you'd pay in the South. Sign outside says food served 6 til 9. At 6.10 we were told the kitchen weren’t taking any more orders until 6.30. At 6.30 we were told the kitchen needed another 20 minutes before we could order. The pub/restaurant was quiet with a couple of other tables already dining. There were 3 staff at a very empty bar. Once the food was ordered we then had to wait another 45 minutes for it to arrive. The children ordered from the adult menu - fish and chips and steak burger - and all enjoyed their food. The adults ordered the rib-eye which came drowning in a garlic oil which spoiled it. Very disappointing experience all round.

Stopped here many times for lunch on our way to visit family across the country. Was a bit disappointed this time. We just had sandwiches and chips for lunch. The cheese and onion toastie was ok but the chicken and bacon sandwich on brown bread was so so. Bread was very thick but quite dry and needed more filling. Chips were just the thin frozen type. Staff were lovely however and place was clean. We were the only ones in on a Friday lunchtime. We were staying nearby with the family at half term, called to make sure we could get in as there were 7 of us and a toddler. When we got there the place wasn't too busy as a shooting party were just leaving, however there were only two staff on, covering the hotel reception, bar and restaurant, consequently it took forever to get served with food, the starter and the main course took so long to arrive, we decided not to bother with dessert as couldn't face another long wait for it. Having said that, the food when it did arrive was really tasty and well presented.

Celebrated New Year with friends. The criteria. We wanted something near Allendale, that was sensibly priced and sold good beer. My friend found this place and booked us in.I woke up to a bit of a roar in the morning. There was definitely a lot of water moving quite close to the pub. I opened the curtains and was greeted with a glorious view of an old stone bridge and a weir. Just perfect. V pretty indeed. (And no it is not too noisy to disturb your sleep). This is a cosy pub with a number of newly constructed rooms offering bed and breakfast facilities.Downside- Free WiFi a bit iffy. But it is free WiFi in the middle of no-where. so accept it- High level cleaning could be better (ie dead fly convention in the light fitting)- The curtains in the room didn't fit one of the windows that well- Upon check we found that in the bin that bathroom had not been emptied, ie debris from previous occupant. Really not acceptable.Upside- Location- Easy parking- A genuine welcome and helpful staff- Warm pub and bedroom- Pub grub and real ale- Can cook a fried egg properlySpeaking of eggs. Breakfast. This was a pretty reasonable full English. HUGE serving of baked beans, but then the chef served half a mushroom. And half a slice of Black Pudding. I understand that Black Pudding is a specialist taste, but it really does seem a bit mean serving half portions. Suggest you review half portions on these items. In summary the only thing I have a gripe about is the cleaning. Sort out your cleaning in the rooms and also look up when doing so. (So many hotel cleaning staff never look up when cleaning). Other than that, this is a pretty pub with good grub and beer. We are thinking about returning in the summer!

After a long walk up to High Cup Nick on New Years Eve we were hoping to find somewhere to eat while driving to our digs for the night near Hexham passed this place and thought we'd give it a go. I had the steak and ale pie and Vicki went with the gammon, egg and sweet potato fries. My pis comprised of a bowl of beef stew with a oval of puff pastry that had been baked separate and placed on top with a side of seasonal veg. There was a good amount of tender beef in a rich tasty sauce and I wolfed it all down with gusto. However I did have serious dinner envy as Vicki's gammon steak looked awesome, a real man size portion with lovely crisp sweet potato fries, I'm going to have to ho back to order this! We both had a mixed fruit crumple with custard for pudding which again was homemade and a good sized portion. Really good home cooked food at realistic prices I would recommend! I would have given a score of 5 however a pet hate of mine is when the menu says pie and I get stew with a floating pastry crust. To be a pie it surely has to be baked all together? Maybe I'm being picky, either way great food and friendly service!

We travel to this country pub, 3 or 4 times a year when we're either travelling over to the lakes for just having a run out or for a special treat. It's been a while since we were last here (Valentines day 2016), so we had a run out on Sunday just gone for a traditional Sunday lunch. As we like to arrive around 12:00 the pub had not long opened it's doors for the day, but already had a number of thirsty travelers looking for liquid refreshment / break from their journey. There was also the local clay pigeon shooting club in the nearby field - the sounds of the shoot added to the charming traditional country pub atmosphere. We settled in one of the window bay tables in the bar instead of the dining restaurant room. We both opted for the traditional Sunday lunch, 1x beef and 1x lamb. The food was good quality and value for money. There's a magical thing with true country pubs, where you can just relax and unwind while talking over drinks and eating good quality food - the Elk's Head has it in spades.Once the 'rocky road with ice cream' desert was gone and drinks supped it was time to be on our way again. With the sounds of the local shoot still echoing in the valley we both looked at each other and agreed not to leave it so long before returning.

We were looking for a good place to visit which would give us a great drive out through the countryside with a good menu of food to choose from. Whilst the Elks Head fulfilled the former admirably it was disappointing with the latter as the menu on offer when we visited was rather basic and simple compared to that advertised on their website.Having said that, I should clarify that the food was generally to a good standard and we did enjoy our visit, it just wasn’t what we hoped it would be.

I would highly recommend this pub but you do need to drive to it ...

Stayed one night. Lovely countryside. You never see a soul! Lively pub at weekend. Everyone is really really friendly. Evening meal was tasty but basic. The bedrooms are nicely decorated, if a bit basic but everything that you would expect. The thing that let it down was the breakfast. They say local bacon, black pudding etc but it was very very dry and obviously cooked earlier and kept warm. The bacon was inedible as it was like rubber, we took it for the dog! Also the coffee was cold. The croissant were as hard as a rock too. ! The only good thing we're the poached eggs that were perfectly cooked and lovely. Opt for poached eggs on toast.!!!All good apart from breakfast

Called by for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago. It was late in the afternoon but they were still serving food, and with a choice of roasts still available. It was delicious, the Yorkshire Puddings great as always with tasty fresh veg.The waitress Lauren was very friendly and welcoming - a definite asset to the pub.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
