We managed to find an indoor table for 2, by the counter, after an invigorating walk at Cuber Gap. It was quite full for lunch and some had even gone outside in the marquee. The homemade soup was good and the rustic baguettes were filling and tasty. Good service, thanks

I call in here from time to time, usually when I’m passing through Calver rather than as a destination in itself, and have found the food and drinks to be consistently excellent. From sandwiches, salads and soups to cakes and desserts, there is a great selection and everything is delicious and so fresh. Coffee is wonderful too and always piping hot, as requested. I do agree with some of the other reviews that service can be slow but, equally, the food is freshly prepared and that takes time. On the last occasion I was here with a friend, we were served by a young male waiter and he was excellent, despite the place being very busy. The cafe is quite small, and there is limited indoor seating, but there are some gazebos outside which are nice in warm weather (less appealing when it’s cold and damp, though!) There’s a reasonable amount of free parking, clean loos (accessed by a few stairs so maybe not suitable for anybody with mobility difficulties) and a very well stocked, reasonably priced gift / craft shop attached to the cafe. All in all, The Eating House is well worth a visit and I’ll definitely be back.

Not only was the dish was extremely overpriced at £11 for the portion size but the quality was extremely poor! The menu details were clearly composed by a fiction writer. What was described as a dish in a rich tomato sauce with vegetables and sundried tomatoes actually contained 2 very thin slices of onions and tomatoes that would never pass for sundried in terms of texture and taste. They were soggy and tasteless.Suffice it to say there was no richness to the watery sauce. The staff seemed totally embarassed and unwilling to address my comments and complaint. If you are looking for any quality in the food or sevice this is not the place

Arrived after walking from Frogget Bridge. Had a few swims on the way. Lydia looked after me. Gave me my treats and asked what my keepers would like. They enjoyed their scones and coffee and as usual said all the nice things about how good it is on a Sunday morning. Beth brought me my sausage.....delish! All the customers made a fuss of me. Always try and stop here for a bite when we pop up to the peak District, never disappoints. Came in the other day for afternoon tea, but decided to go for savoury afternoon tea instead. Popped in to look at the ever popular Halloween decorations and decided to have a quick lunch. We ordered a bowl of soup each and we’re going to have a coffee afterwards. But you have to pay as you go, which I find quite odd after Covid restrictions have been lifted. We finished our soup which was very tasty. And waited a further 20 mins to have our plates cleared. I find this odd as I counted 6 staff in the kitchen. All in all the food was lovely but the service crap. Also the cafe isn’t overly clean and should you have a table where you can see into the kitchen, it’s not the cleanest either. The fan has an inch of muck on it. Plus one of the staff licking their fingers was slightly off putting.

We hoped for tea and scones, and having been shown to our table in a very organised, but surly manner in the refashioned car park with individual gazebo-style booths, we waited and waited for service. When the waitress eventually came to take our order she informed us that there were no scones, and hadn’t been for some time. If we’d have been given that info as we sat down it would have been a game changer. But we placed our order as we were now settled. The drinks came but no cakes. By the time the cakes did arrive all drinks were nearly finished but it had taken so long for the order to arrive we couldn’t bear the wait for more drinks, so we gamely ate cake ‘dry’. A small concern in these troubling times, I agree, but what we’d hoped to be afternoon tea at the end of a fantastic walk, turned into a dull, slow affair. We shall vote with our feet and not go back here.

We also had a choice of soft drink and so went for sparkling elderflower. We collected it in a lovely easy to carry box, and even though I had ordered it in advance (so knew what was going to be inside) we still felt it was a real delight opening our 'hamper ' up and trying all the goodies inside. Listen up you spurious babies. I don’t want to make you fearful but next time we have a fight at ‘the eating house’ in ‘calver’ you won’t walk away so easily. What happened last time? I hear you ask. Let me lighten this situation as there is a lot to unpack.I ordered my usual, banana split as the high amounts of potassium help me to focus my vision when partaking in my favourite hobby, bird spotting. I simply asked the waiter, is this straight from the plantation and to my shock he replied with “and I suppose you want your milk straight from the cow as well.” Overflowing with rage, my body went into fight or flight. My first action was to plant a steely fist right in his kisser. That’ll leave a bruise, I thought. Before he could retaliate I arched my back like a whale surfacing for air and did a triple summersault, unfortunately landing inside the drinks machine. Two or three others got up from their tables and made to surround me. “Ka law ka kaw” I called out to the birds for help, none came. “Deserters, cowards, black” (they are crows it’s fine.) It was over for me, there were enemies in all directions. The manager sent a fatal blow straight into my crack, shattering my pelvis. I got out of hospital yesterday, and I’m out for revenge. Next time I order a banana split, it better be fair trade. Angry and mortally wounded,Asuna Mcarthur

We had to queue for a few minutes, but the time was useful to make our choice from the vast array of cakes, tray bakes and pies displayed in the cabinet. When the cake was delivered to the table, to our surprise, it had a small portion of fruit on the side which was such a nice touch.

What an amazing breakfast! The eating house staff were brilliant, they were able to cater for 9 of us in a timely and professional manner. The choice is vast, we all chose something different and every one of us ate every scrap! Fantastic quality food cooked perfectly!

Have had breakfast here twice while visiting the area and have found the size of the meals and the quality of ingredients to be very good indeed. There are some different choices like kedgeree, as well as good vegan and gluten free options. My only slight reservation is that it is a little on the pricey side.

The cakes are great ...when fresh. We have been caught out twice now; we’ve selected the freshest looking, uncut cake and been served some older version from the kitchen! As this happened to us quite recently, today we made sure to check that the lovely Bakewell tart on display was the one we would be served and we even watched the server take it Ito the back to cut. When it arrived, I actually commented to my husband that if this was the fresh one, I’m glad we didn’t get an older slice! What a surprise when we left the cafe only to see the intact new tart back on its pedestal untouched!I went back to complain as I think this is a sneaky trick. How fresh the cake is is something I consider when making my selection! Please be honest and display the cake currently in use! This has happened twice now and we particularly checked on this occasion. Even worse, I heard the staff giggling as I left so I think they knew exactly what had gone on.

Called in for lunch while working in the area , lovely menu great selection of cakes. Can’t complain about the food soup lovely as was the lemon drizzle cake. Only downside the same person taking the order also makes the drinks and then takes the money !! This made for incredibly slow service , while waiting a group of people walked out ! I notice a similar comment further down this feed . Shame ! Great little place but needs some serious review on the customer service , have someone else to make the drinks please .

Lovely cafe. Nice outside area. Good shop. Gluten free menu is very good, particularly breakfast and cakes. Think staff are aware to avoid cross contamination etc. Well done!!!!

Great choice, even for vegans and coeliacs. Lots of yummy cakes as well. Slightly annoying that you are told to queue and order food before reserving a table... Last time I had to start eating stood up waiting for a table... So avoid peak times. Good choice of drinks. Staff are nice but it may be helpful if one made drinks whilst another took the order as it can be time consuming.

We called in for cake and coffee, after our disappointment with the afternoon tea. This we chose our favourite cakes, which were delicious and an extra bonus is that they now have loyalty cards for cake so Happy Days!

Called for breakfast and glad we did, great tea and coffee served with freshly prepared quality food. Although we didn’t have any the cakes also looked fabulous. 110% recommended by all my family.

My wife and I visited today for Afternoon Tea. An amazing selection of finger sandwiches, cakes, scones with jam and cream along with a decorative salad and various fruits and endless coffee and tea - what’s not to like.

We were lucky enough to be treated by friends to breakfast in this lovely little place. Great Full English Breakfast and Eggs Benedict. Beautifully cooked bacon sausage eggs and mushrooms.Free top ups of tea and coffee. Only held back from scoring a 5 because the oatcakes were soggy - I think I’d prefer toast if it was possible to offer as an alternative? Overall though a lovely place and would like to come back and sample the wonderful looking cakes!

We have been to the Eating House many times and we thought we would have afternoon tea this week. So we ordered at the till, and having been behind someone ordering afternoon tea on a previous visit, thought we could choose the cakes we would like. Apparently not, we were told they would be chosen for us, nor were we asked about a choice of sandwiches (there could have been fillings either one of us didn't like). It came on a three tiered cake plate, the sandwiches were OK, but selection of tray bakes, wouldn't have been our choice. So all in all a little disappointed, however, it won't stop us visiting again!

I had seen an advertisement for The Derbyshire Craft Centre, but it was a bonus when we found that we could eat lunch there. It is quite busy as one would expect on a warm sunny day, but having chosen our food we sat down to await its arrival. The salads were delicious and well worth waiting for, but the choice of cakes was unbelievable, but everything was enjoyable.

This is a great little cafe and a worthwhile stop-off for refreshments. Very busy so a short wait but with good rewards at the end. There are a good choice of light meals available and an excellent choice of cakes for those with a sweet tooth! Pleasant staff and surroundings if a little small. Very nice eating place.

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Really lovely food, you wouldn't know it from the outside/inside - it's like any other pub but the food was really good. Had the best dessert - rice pudding with apple and nuts - to die for.

We went for Sunday lunch and it was probably the best I've had, the meat melted in your mouth and the veg was brilliant with meaty gravy

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.
