One of our faves when in Bury, beautiful decor, the bar and restaurant are just lovely! Staff are so friendly, we celebrated our anniversary, they made it special

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent. Would highly recommend.

In this restaurant the dishes are delicious. Dinner for two. One of us had Scallops, the other had Black olive paté. Both dishes were well presented and absolutely bursting with flavour. The main courses, one of Ribeye and the other Venison haunch were similar, great tasting dishes with an eye to the presentation. Good choice of wines and other drinks. The staff were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. On this visit the Scallops were my favourite dish. It's not the first time I've eaten here and I'm looking forward to my next should the opportunity arise.

I have had afternoon tea a few times now. First time was for my birthday, the second was for our anniversary. Both times we were made to feel very special. Had cards and a little desert to help us celebrate our special day. The staff are amazing, the food is of exceptional quality and the atmosphere is always very welcoming and cosy. Would 100% recommend the Angel Hotel to anyone. And I do !!!

Friendly helpful staff and good food

We were gifted our afternoon tea as a 50th anniversary present and knowing the Angel’s high reputation we were not disappointed high class quisiune, excellent service and to top it off a special anniversary plate marking the occasion, a most enjoyable day.

Only 3 finger sandwiches each, two scones each and lots of very dry cakes, disappointing.

Despite the location and the rating we had a disappointing experience with the Angel hotel. Hope the feedback will contribute to the improvement of the hotel's housekeeping services and communication between the personnel. Regrettably, our stay has been marred by several significant issues. Due to shower problems we were relocated to a new room. Then, we were faced with an even more distressing situation. Upon retiring to bed, we smelt something, when lifted the bed sheet we discovered a disturbing stain on the mattress that turned out to be the cause a foul odour. Closer inspection made us realise that the mattress had been most likely soiled with bodily fluids (probably urine), unfortunately and to our horror all our clothes absorbed that smell. Despite reporting this issue to the hotel staff, their response was initially dismissive. The staff's offer of an out-of-order room was unacceptable (broken shower). As an alternative to changing rooms I suggested to change the mattresses, which they were not really willing to do. While they eventually agreed to replace the mattress, their handling of the situation was both inadequate and disrespectful. The manner in which the mattresses were transported through the hotel corridors (dragged over the carpets) and placed on our bed frames, and instead of fresh bedding we were given the ones from the other room, all was unsanitary and deeply concerning. We feel that the hotel's failure to prioritise the well-being of its guests is unacceptable. I requested to speak to the General Manager or an Assistant Manager to express our concerns to what I was told that they were busy. I received a call from the hotel's GM the following day, who could not meet in person and despite apologising was still very defensive regarding the incident, they offered an upgrade of the room, which yet again was disappointing as the duvet stunk, ended up sleeping in a rob. Also, we were offered complimentary B&B but after seeing and experiencing weird odours in the hotel we won't be accepting the offer. A genuine apologies would have been a better way of resolving the matter with in person meeting and expressing genuine concern for the guests' experiences would be invaluable. We were also told that the Duty Manager was supposed to meet us as well but when we mentioned the whole incident at the reception there was no information on the incident we experience all the y knew was that there was a change of the room. Very poor communication between the personnel leaves one wonder how things could be improved if the information is concealed. The housekeeping services of the place is the worst in my experience, along with that almost every bathroom we were in was mouldy. We were disheartened and exhausted by this ordeal that has impacted our ability to rest and recuperate.

The food was very good. Although Broccoli and cauliflower cheese only arrived after we queried where it was 3 times. By the time it did arrive we had almost finished our lunch. We arrived 12.45 for 1.00pm Sunday lunch in the Vaults. Lovely setting but service was non existent. One of our party was served a pint of beer that was clearly off obviously the bar man has had no training. Needless to say we sent it back. Waiting staff were obviously under pressure may be they should not take so many bookings. We were so looking forward to our visit but have to say would not go back. We asked for the bill 3 times in the end my husband went and found them in order to pay. They were all sitting at a table laughing and joking. As I said we sat down at 12.45 but we're still there at 3.30pm. it is nice not to be rushed but this was a bit beyond a joke. Such a shame as the food was lovely.

This is the second time my wife and I have come here for our anniversary, there is not 1 thing we can fault, perfect service from the get go. Steve the porter parked our car and helped us to our room and the next morning helped again and took us to our car. The room was very clean and the whole place has a great atmosphere. The food …well…flawless. Starter, main and desert were just cooked to perfection. Thankyou and we will see you again

We had Sunday roast in the evening. It was an amazing meal with super Yorkshire pudding. Everything about it was lovely. The team were very friendly and could not do enough for you. Lovely atmosphere too. We've eaten here previously and will definitely be back to stay and eat here again..... the breakfast was amazing too. High quality food with many choices. Very tasty food, excellent presentation. Very nice dining room and friendly staff. Top marks for staff thoughtfulness and communication. The barman noticed that I ordered champagne for my Aunt and I. He asked what we were celebrating and we explained that it was my deceased uncle's birthday. So the barman asked the kitchen to prepare us a happy birthday dessert - on the house. My Aunt was overjoyed. Thank you. It really made her day.

We managed to get a last-minute reservation (October 2024) for the "Underground Supper Club" (Small Plates) in the incredible 12th Century undercroft of The Angel Hotel. The setting itself is mind-blowing - romantic, sophisticated and yet primal in its 'Medievalness'. The calibre of service and food only furthered the experience. Every plate on the menu was a winner. The dishes were all very tempting - varied, some light and some rich. Beautifully/artfully plated, they combined to being filling and great value. The wine pairings were also simple/to-the-point, but great. Highly recommended. Will return at the next suitable opportunity.

Lovely afternoon tea, only 4 stars for food because the scones first served were a bit doughy, mentioned this to staff, they were extremely apologetic and resolved the problem with another serving of hot well baked scones, everything else was delicious! Would recommend!

Took my friend to the Angel for afternoon tea, it was amazing. Lovely cakes and sandwiches, spotlessly clean and great staff. We will be returning very soon. This is the first visit for me and I was really impressed and wish I had visited earlier

We had afternoon tea for our anniversary and everything was so perfect. We received a hand written anniversary card and special treat. Food was delicious and the service was excellent, very attentive and friendly staff.

We had afternoon tea for two, it was my husband's birthday treat. We have had a lot of afternoon teas around the county, but were disappointed with this one. Three finger sandwiches each? Two plain and two fruit scones, which were delicious and no complaints there. On the bottom plate with the sandwiches were a vol au vent each with slightly odd tasting cream cheese, four mini sausages, which seemed undercooked and two small - what we assumed were sausage rolls, but were filled with shredded beef. I didn't eat mine and gave it to my husband. Very strange. The cakes on top - battenberg slices very small and way too wet, they fell apart as we put in the takeaway box. The macarons had gone soft sitting next other items, the mousse fell off the knife as my husband was trying to remove it from the cake stand. It landed under the table! In fact, we took the top plate home as the mini buns seemed dry. We were not impressed overall. The cake stand plates were small compared to other teas we've had. At £35 a head we would have expected more. Much as we love the hotel, we won't be back. Staff were very nice, but it would've been a better touch if the waitress had taken the ;leftover cakes away and put in the box for us as they were slipping and sliding everywhere. Apart from the scone which my son had when we got home, the rest went in the bin. Disappointed to say the least - as you get good reviews in the main, I feel rather churlish complaining, but we just were not impressed.

My first visit to "The Vault" for a "Friday Social" it will NOT be my last... A very enjoyable evening. Highly recommended. I mentioned on the booking it was a wedding anniversary dinner - Usually that is that. However, the staff congratulated us on arrival, there was a card on the table when we sat down and later there was a desert plate with "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate sauce! First rate customer service - Thank You. Many places do not even acknowledge what you write on the booking. The singer, who was excellent, had a great play list which was toned and tempered to the atmosphere and venue; not too loud to drown out conversation. - The "Killers" in a romantic setting - Unbelievable. The Staff were very "genuine". Attentive, friendly but not over familiar and appeared genuinely happy to be there. A special evening; made by the staff, entertainment, and venue. Thank You.

We stayed at the Angel this weekend for our wedding anniversary returning to where we stayed the night of our wedding. The service was very good with every member of staff enthusiastic and attentive. You don’t often get good service these days but it was excellent at the Angel. We ate breakfast both mornings of our stay and the food was very good as well as the setting.

We dined at the angel hotel during the early express. We had a delicious 3 course dinner with a peach Bellini. Great value for money, amazing quality and very rich food. Great and quick service couldn’t fault our experience. Thank you!

My wife and I married here just over a year ago, and people who attended the wedding are still discussing the food and atmosphere within the Angel Hotel. We went back for our anniversary, and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent, and the staff was courteous and helpful, which made the whole experience special all over again.

This is a fantastic hotel with great areas to sit, eat and drink. We had a birthday meal for my husband and he was given a card and special treat too! Staff are very attentive and service is quick with a smile. Staff took the time to talk to us and the food was of high quality and cooked well. We booked late lunchtime and mainly had the restaurant to ourselves.The whole hotel is extremely clean and well presented, nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommend this hotel and restaurant.

Lovely evening at Angel Hotel. The food was beautiful from there set menu and included a pre dinner drink. Great value. The staff provided lovely warm service and made us feel very welcome. Will definitely return.

We booked an overnight stay with dinner included. Quite apart from the excellent room the restaurant was really good, the staff friendly and helpful and the food was good too. A very sensible small range menu which means that the meal is delivered in good time and the chefs can concentrate on getting everything perfect. I wish we lived nearer, we would spend a lot more time in the Eaterie.

The Copper room was super comfortable and quiet, we slept very well. The Breakfast was very filling and the ingredients fresh and tasty ( great mushrooms and sausages) 😋 later in the day after a lovely walk we had a Gammon sandwich which was scrumptious. The hotel is in the perfect position to walk out for coffee, cakes restaurants etc. Staff friendly and helpful.Will definitely book again.

We had lunch after our Civil Partnership next door. It was perfect. Lovely staff, service, atmosphere, outlook across the square, delicious food, house champagne, very, very happy.

Afternoon tea was delicious. Plenty of variety and good ingredients used. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, but we needed to ask for fresh tea or coffee. Normally staff will pass by and ask, this didn't happen. This is the only gripe we have.

A very unique and special afternoon tea. The Dickens inspired theme really works, and the cocktails were delicious. You might need to take a doggy bag home.

I have lunch frequently at the Angel with my Daughter and we share the same opinions that the food, service and ambience are excellent. Each time I come away I book the next date for lunch. That surely says everything.

Really beautiful place, I visited with my parents for lunch we walked in and I initially thought this will be expensive! But there were some reasonably priced items on the menu and quality of food was outstanding along with the service. Really great staff that couldn't do enough, immaculate inside, including the toilets. Lots of different places to sit all with different atmospheres more quiet places to busier in the restaurant but all calm decor fantastic. There was a very small wedding reception being set up in the main restaurant, what an amazing idea and in my opinion an excellent choice. I fell in live with this place, and I will absolutely be back.

I felt the waitress was really trying to upsell at all times which made it less relaxing. The sneaky 12.5% service charge added to the bill also felt a bit of a cheek, no problem tipping but I prefer to have the choice on the amount depending on my experience. Also, asking for tap water so I wouldn't be charged for water unnecessarily didn't seem to go down well with our waitress... the customer should feel comfortable and I certainly felt judged not taken care of! A tad snobby!

Fabulous evening in this beautiful restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Couldnt have asked for a better experience. Food was delicious, service exemplary.

I eat out almost 7 days a week have been to every good restaurant around Norfolk, but hands down this is number one second to none, the absolute governor of an establishment, I’ve been back here over 10 times and it never fails to disappoint, I’m yet to try anything else on the menu because this is the best pie meal you will ever eat.

I was gifted an afternoon tea for two voucher as a birthday present. The food was delicious and extremely well presented, the staff were very helpful, and the lounge was beautiful. It felt very luxurious. All in all, it was a lovely experience and one I would definitely recommend to others.

I had my Wedding Breakfast in the recently refurbished Vaults. The food was amazing! So tasty! Everyone enjoyed it. The service was top notch with staff going above and beyond to make our big day go well. The quirky intimate atmosphere in The Vaults made it a perfect venue for our meal and evening. I took my son for Sunday lunch for his 30th birthday. The food and service were amazing and they gave him a birthday card and a beautiful Happy Birthday dessert - which he did not share!!

I was given a gift for afternoon tea for two and went yesterday. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly taking into account my dislike of mustard and nuts. Was given an extra tartlet instead of macaron. The food was delicious, had to take some of the sweet bits home. The brie and cranberry muffin was amazing, and the chocolate eclaire and tartlet. As it was a birthday gift we were given an extra bit of brownie with a message on. Lots of teas to choose from and coffee to.

The Angel is a very special place; every care is taken and the food is quite wonderful. The chef(s) need proper recognition for some exceptional skills.

We had a delicious lunch here. Good menu, fine food, chic atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Great food, very friendly service, and a charming venue.

We love the Eaterie at the Angel Hotel. The atmosphere is great, the service is always prompt and responsive, and the food is outstanding. Items on the menu change based on what the chefs sourced, but it means the food is always fresh and there are always new options. My wife and I have eaten here probably 10 times since we moved to the area a year and a half ago, and it’s been outstanding every time. Probably one of the best restaurants in Bury. 👍

The Angel was such a welcoming venue. Celebrating a friends birthday we were so well looked after, with some lovely birthday touches, a birthday plate and also a card left at the table. The food and service were both fabulous. I cannot wait for my next visit.

Previously had a fabulous Sunday lunch however this time food well below standard. Roast beef bland and fatty vegetables scarce but good roasties and cauliflower cheese (extra charge). Terrible table looking into kitchen where they keep door open directly into restaurant. Good server.

Don't go Sunday lunchtime! I pre-booked a table of 12 at 1.00 pm for my 80th birthday. Dining room, bar and lounge packed. Seemed to be only very few staff serving all areas. Starters were good but we then waited 45 minutes for the main course. This was a very poor quality roast beef or pork with tired, boring vegetables. Only my vegetarian guests enjoyed their meal - or were too polite to say otherwise. So disappointed as in past years have enjoyed special lunches here at mid-week. I wrote to the Manager as didn't want to go public, but received no acknowledgement even.

We loved the Angel Hotel! Our dog was also made to feel welcome, with a water bowl in the room, and even a squeaky ball treat. Dogs are not allowed in the bar or restaurant, but we had delicious cocktails and nibbles in the lounge area, and Scooby loved the endless attention from staff and customers alike. Afternoon looked great, served on 3 tiers. Breakfast was superb, with fresh fruit salad, pancakes, avocado and poached eggs - and anything else you fancied.

Fabulous restaurant in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. Everyone is attentive without being 'over the top'. Superb evening menu which is good value for the quality of food, presentation and service. We really cannot fault this amazing venue. We would highly recommend you book in advance and we will be returning again in the near future.

I’m a local to the town and as always The Angel hotel is where I take my friends and family for an excellent dining experience. The staff are all incredibly friendly and professional. The aim is for you to be looked after with care and attention. The decor is beautiful and fun. There is always a buzzy atmosphere. If you haven’t been then go! Afternoon tea at The Angel Hotal was a lovely special treat for New Year's Eve. We had the luxury afternoon menu with a glass each of champagne, which was a good value edition. The gluten free selection was just as broad as the regular selection, which was a welcome surprise. The gluten free fruit scones were especially good. Atmosphere benefited from the buzz of the seasonal occasion. Staff were friendly and effective.

Went to The Angel for afternoon tea to celebrate our daughter's 40th Birthday. We sat in the Dining Room which we thought was better, food, service and atmosphere all excellent. We all had a very enjoyable time.

I attended our afternoon tea with 8 of my colleagues on Wednesday 6th December for afternoon tea. The setting was beautiful with the log fire, the waiter was attentive, unfortunately it went rather downhill from the introduction of the food. Prior to booking, I had checked any changes could be catered for. I sent all changes and requirements, with people names, thinking this would be helpful, making it easier to identify individual’s needs. As the plates were being brought out, we were then asked who had what, I did advise that they should already have a list, we ended up with a plate of salmon with the cream cheese, no egg, and limited turkey. It was explained to us that some of the stacked serving plates would be to share, which was fine, but did become rather confusing. Issues we experienced. • Very disorganised. • After 30+ minutes, we just accepted whatever we had on the table, and tried to share it out. • Sandwiches: there were multiple salmon and cheese, and had to advise, some of these needed to be without cream cheese, limited turkey, and egg. • Missing 2 sausage rolls and 2 muffins. • I found a strand of hair or fine fabric in my salmon sandwich, I did send this back, but no apology. • The plain scones were very dry and heavy, I have attached a photo, as on slicing they just crumbled. • Fruit scones were verging on rock cakes. • The gluten free stand did not have a scone, or alternative. As I had organised this, I wanted to ensure everyone was catered for, in the end I only had, one salmon, and one egg, 1/2 plain scone, as this was not palatable, and one cake. I have had an afternoon tea at the Angel and could not fault it, the scones were light and fluffy, giving me a standard to go by

Such a lovely space to enjoy afternoon tea. Open fire, soft furnishings. Service was wonderful. Food was delicious. Not many black tea varieties offered, and personally we would have all liked more sandwiches and less sweet things, but that is personal preference. There were only 3 tiny sandwich fingers. All delicious, hence we would have liked more. Glass of champers was an enjoyable start!

we booked for 4 at 6:30. A Plane was late at Stanstead then a tree blocked the M11 north. Phoned and a later time was arranged 9:00pm. Food and service was good. The only down side was how noisy it is in there. Surely noise reduction materials could be incorporated into the design in heftier.

Food and service wonderful. Lovely dining room but it did get quite noisy. Guess that's a good sign because it was full.

I took my friend for afternoon tea as a birthday treat. The chairs were not only uncomfortable but were different heights so one towered over the other and this felt odd. We received less than one whole sandwich each. 3/4’s of a sandwich each which is pitiful. Cakes did not taste of very much but the scones were lovely. Staff were not attentive at all. After the initial setting us up we were ignored so i had to call them both times for drinks. As a supervisor in a tearoom i know the standard and this was below par

Busy restaurant with a good atmosphere. Service is superb. Only had breakfast but couldn't fault anything. Well priced for the quality. Would thoroughly recommend.

Scallops and languostine starter

Myself and my friend attended Saturday for the afternoon tea. We were greeted very politely when we arrived by all staff and shown to our table. Darren was serving our table and provided a fab service, with a smile throughout. The afternoon tea we received was delicious and a great choice. We would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back again. Thank you all again for an amazing afternoon tea experience.

Shared a wonderful afternoon tea with my wife at The Angel. The dining room was very comfortable with relaxed background music. Food was fantastic and more varied and more substantial than most afternoon teas. There were pastires as well as finger sandwiches, a larger selection of cakes and two types of scone each. Too much for one sitting, so we had to bring some home. It was a shame todock a star for the service, it was worth more than four but was sometimes difficult to get the waiter's attention, but he was always friendly and efficient when we did get it. Overall, though a wonderful experience. I would happily recommend.

The Angel never disappoints. Fabulous food, excellent decor, the best service, thank you Jasmine and Tom, who always have a lovely warm welcome and are attentive to all your needs, we always feel very spoilt. Highly recommend a visit.

We have been to the Eaterie at the Angel Hotel many times over the years and love it! This week for the first time we had the 3 course meal with a cocktail thrown in all for £35. There was a choice of 3 options for each course an we both chose Blood Orange for Cocktail, Chicken Terrine to start, Haddock for the main and sticky toffee pudding for Dessert. Absolutely superb meal and service - couldn't fault it!
