The Eastney Tavern in Portsmouth

Went to The Tavern during half term with my Grandsons.......16 year olds. They both love the burger meals . The adults had a special meal which was the sea bream. It was delicious.....beautifully cooked, full of flavour and absolutely lovely. Please repeat this on your menu. We loved it !! Thank you to the chef for a lovely meal all round.

Went for a meal with family and was very impressed with the pub. It's got a locals vibe but without a cliquey atmosphere. It was steak night and the steaks with some of the best we've ever had in a pub, I don't know where they get their meat from but it's good!. The chips were chunky and crispy and the onion rings were perfect. It the best pub meal I've had in a very very long time!! Thank you very much The Eastney Tavern team!

Yet again a wonderful Burns Night Supper! Wonderful food, (this years was the best ever) great atmosphere, awesome Scottish piper and some funny speeches. We wouldn’t celebrate Burns night anywhere else!

Booked for a Sunday roast. Food was really delicious and the service was excellent too. Will definitely be going back again.

We had a lovely visit. The food was very good and the vegetarian option amazing! Great service from the team, they were attentive but we didn't feel rushed, really polite friendly staff. We will be booking again soon.

Met up with a few old friends for a pre-Christmas lunch. Two of us used to live in St George's Road in the 90s and was our 'local' so it was really nice to pay a visit after do long. Good beer, good food, great memories.

Called the pub to make a reservation for Xmas lunch for 2 people. Was advised that I needed to pre-order and pay a deposit, they would email me a link. Three hours later still no email. Decided to email my order in and asked for details of how to pay. Got a reply informing me I could pay over the phone or click a link in the email to pay online. Decided to call the pub to pay. The guy who I spoke to couldn't find my order on the system and seemed incapable of taking a pre-order (for 2 people!) and payment over the phone. He eventually said he would get someone to call me back. More than 36 hours later I am still waiting. Totally incompetent. Would have scored zero if I could.

We were down from Brighton. Traditional pub, food Sunday roast would definitely come again.

We went to a private function at lunch time on Friday. It was really great with wonderful atmosphere. Well done to the landlord 😁

Ridiculous service and staff. Such a waste of potential.

Very rude staff, they wouldn’t even look at you, we had to ask for the menu and after 15’ wait, the tall guy didn’t even come to take an order. It was not busy at that time and he was just standing by the counter doing nothing. Great atmosphere but definitely not going back.

Friendly, large pub with restaurant.

Very disappointed in the duck special of the day, it was not special just two lumps of duck breast, poor value for money. All the roast dinners looked much better value so I would advise keep clear of the specials. When mentioned to the young man he didn't seem at all interested. Shame as everything else was fine.

A wonderful Sunday lunch after the Great South Run was cancelled. We still had a charity run and The Eastney Tavern looked after us in our recovery. The service and food was fantastic and they evening gave a donation to our leukaemia charity run. Lovely place and thoroughly recommended!

Sunday roast beef was over cooked/Yorkshire pudding was a bit rubbery not good value for money

We had a table booked for 6 but had to increase to 8 on the morning of the lunch. They managed to move things around to allow for this last minute and was not a problem for them. Very grateful. The service and food was amazing, especially when it was so busy. All food came out together and everyone was very happy. The waiting staff were friendly, available at all times, checked in on us and made sure we always had drinks. A lovely lunch on a wintery Sunday afternoon. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent food and great place for a family meal

Booked Sunday lunch for 5pm of day of Great South run for 3 people over 3 weeks before event as a walk in. All confirmed face to face. Rang today to change to 2 people only to be told they do not have our booking , are full and can do nothing for us! Awful customer service and not what I have come to be used to from the Tavern. Will think twice before eating here again.

Amazing time at this watering hole! Served by a tall handsome fella called Conor, poured a Fantastic pint of Guinness and had a lovely chat about life. Food: incredible. Atmosphere: very splendid. 10 out of 10. Would swing by again.

We often pop in for a Friday evening meal and are never disappointed. The meals are to a very high standard for pub food and the staff are always friendly, attentive and cannot do enough for you. My steak on Friday was tender and delicious and we couldn’t find fault with anything. Thank you

Decent food that tasted ok but beef was a bit chewy on the Sunday roast and stuffing was the size of a little finger.

Liked this Pub,Served decent Real Ales(Butty Bach)being one,from the Wye Valley Brewery!Typical mid week Clientele, these are the salt of the Earth characters, which are desperately needed,we drink in the Afternoon and early evening, unfortunately we are a dying breed,just like most pubs,Cheers K

Just finished meal , nice staff and atmosphere, but what is going on with the portion control! I ordered fish and chips 16 quid... as did the lady on the next table, she got a decent (standard) size piece of fish, I waited in anticipation and when mine arrived it was atleast a third smaller... disappointed.... please explain how you manage the portion control....

Popped in for a drink with a friend, I have had meals here at other times. Great place, I always recommend it to my Southsea Caravans guests, good atmosphere, great food and range of drinks. It is dog and child friendly too.

Popped in for lunch and had a lovely meal. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food was very tasty. Highly recommended

What a fantastic meal we had today. The calamari was the best I ever had and my wife who hadvthe sea bass desribed the experience as fine dining. Great atmosphere friendly helpful staff. Great time

We went in for a Sunday dinner, and I had lovely swordfish steak and veg, wife had lovely seabass fillet and veg, son had southern style chicken burger. It was well worth it, would recommend this pub, will definitely call back in next time we over in Pompey

First time visiting The Eastney Tavern, I was on holiday. My parents recommended the Eastney.

A hidden gem. Came across it on a day out. Shame couldn't stay longer or leave nearer. Loved it.

Food very good a little pricey for a pub .can't fault it

Lovely food and friendly service. Probably not kid friendly as it has a quieter atmosphere. Only ever been lunchtime so cannot comment on the evening.

Always great food at The Eastney Tavern. They have some fantastic deals and events throughout the week too. On Mondays they have dinner and a drink for £12! Pictured below is the Steak and Ale pie.

Wife and I took our granddaughter for Sunday lunch as a treat for her as she has recently came out of hospital , the young lady that served us made us feel welcome and proceeded to take our orders 2 x chicken 1 x small chicken dinner , ,food arrived very quickly, which was very well presented ,and hot . Service was very good ,and being asked how the meal was to our liking. Will be retuning again , . Value for money

At last, I'm not from Portsmouth but it's nice to find a decent pub where you can sit at the bar if you want to or go into the decent beer garden, the beer on tap is a good selection and reasonably priced, we went in there on Sunday for the first time and were both pleasantly surprised, also a plus to the bar staff for being friendly and very helpful I for one will be using this pub everytime I'm down that way.

If you’re looking for a traditional pub with bags of character then this is it. Good selection of ales and sprits and the roast dinners are generous and pretty damn tasty. Cosy beer garden at the back and a short walk from the seafront where you can normally park depending on the weather and time of day.

The Tavern served us as a large family group for Sunday lunch. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and the food is excellent and plentiful.

Disappointed to be honest. Used to eat here and was always hearty, fresh and generous portions with particularly good chips in really nice pub Now the Regular fish and chips is £16 so not really a budget option, it was nothing special and on the small side but the small plates £10 were like child dinners. Maybe that’s the cost of living increase for you? Service was alright, no one checked if food was ok and giving people one sachet of ketchup each felt miserly. No other food pubs locally so maybe a bit complacent , then again lots of rave reviews so maybe I was just unlucky

It's been a long time since I've visited the 'Shell House' Eastney Tavarn, it was brilliant evening 😊 The main reason was to share an evening with friends, just 4 of us a few drinks and some food We were *not* disappointed 👌 The bar staff were so friendly, the beer was spot on and the food was top class and the table service was very professional 🥳 Very reasonable priced too we couldn't fault it I'd highly recommend a visit, I'll be heading back very soon Thanks to all the staff for making our night memorable 😊😊😊 I loved the liver and bacon 😋

Looks like a cozy oldschool pub, but very spacious and with food served. An in-person visit fulfilled the expectations: lovely atmosphere, great people, and I have to admit I have not tried scampi as tasty, kind of blown away actually.

This is my preferred pub/ restaurant. Headed here for Easter Sunday lunch with friends. The restaurant was buzzing! Food was great as always. The pork was tender, potatoes were crispy and everything was piping hot. The staff were busy but friendly and approachable. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others.

It was my local for many years a long time ago, so going back recently brought back a lot of fond memories. A lovely pub with a fantastic atmosphere and great food, what more could you ask for.

A wonderful and plentiful Sunday Roast so well worth the money. The service was excellent forever helpful. A definite place to eat at any time. Go there and indulge yourself.

The most amazing day Mothers Day lunch. A wonderful varied menu, the vegetarian wellington is simply amazing. Very polite and friendly staff, and wonderful service. Despite being fully booked timings of tables meant that it never felt crowded nor where we rushed. A lovely gift voucher for all mums…perfect way to end a perfect day.

There were four of us and each had a different main course and a shared from the varied menu. The food was all very good and tasty.

Our first time here today the 3 of us had roast beef as no lamb left really good food and staff really friendly very helpful if ask for anything wasn't too much trouble definately be back soon

After years of driving past this pub, we finally went in. Lovely friendly traditional pub. Like a tardis inside. Can't beat a good carpet. Lots of different areas. Good clean toilets and a very welcoming atmosphere. Like the booths. Food looked great. Will be back.

Went in for food didn’t have what we wanted witch was fine you can ask questions but after we said we didn’t want anything for 10 minutes of being sat down at the table across from the bar the staff was fully starring at us from across the bar talking to each other witch was extremely obvious they was talking about us staff made us feel uncomfortable personally if you went to this pub don’t ask questions or else you more than likely get eyes on you 24/7 absolutely ridiculous

Very good food and a good choice of craft ales, both cask and keg choices. I don't like big screen TVs in pubs hence the four stars rating for atmosphere, each to their own, I know some people love watching sport whilst in a pub. Their staff always provide prompt and friendly service.

Dropped in for the Fish and Chip Friday deal, 2 for £20. Made to feel very welcome. Excellent value for money, quick service, food hot and delicious.

A great local pub serving good grub at affordable prices. Staff are very welcoming, there’s a nice fire in the winter and plenty of seating.

A good pub for local traditional beers

Whilst the Atmosphere, Decor and Service may all be good, the food unfortunately is nothing to shout about. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly pleasant but just nothing special. Ask for your lamb steaks to be cooked pink and they are totally stumped.

Had our Christmas gathering last night at Eastney Taverns Christmas Quiz night. 12 past and present work colleagues. Fantastic evening, and not at all surprised as the management and staff are always attentive, friendly and accommodating. £15 for a main, mince pies and the quiz. Place was fully booked (and probably months in advance). Food was great quality (as always imo). Quiz was great fun too. Everyone left with a box of chocolates too. When you hear of great local pubs and their demise this place will never join that phrase. It is my go to pub for all Rugby related days / nights as the atmosphere is fun with lots of home country banter during the 6 Nations. When I'm ever asked where I'd like to go / what my favourite pub in Portsmouth is; it will always be the Tav! To all the team, thank you for a cracking night; your hospitality is second to absolutely none!

We visited as a family with two children for roast dinners. The food was perfect, came out hot and promptly. The staff are friendly and attentive.We will definitely be coming back again and again.
