Food used to be really nice, don't know what has happened, the last twice it wasn't very nice and won't go back

This was our local ‘ go to ‘ pub as the food and service has always been excellent Just been for Sunday lunch which is now carvery style food was adequate but nothing to write home about Whichever chain has taken it over need to rethink as if that’s the quality of food and service then people are not going to return It’s all ‘ self service ‘ so not sure why they need all the waiting staff as they don’t wait on anyone Won’t be going again

Food was good excellent plenty of it

Had meat pie which was pretty good but veg was small frozen stuff which was over heated, otherwise the food would have been brill. Staff were brill.

The place is lovely and i expected it to be really busy but it was practically empty. The food was dreadful. We went for Sunday carvery and I can honestly say It was by far the worst meal I've never had out. The meat was cut thick and was chewy. We couldn't cut into it because the knives were not serrated at all. The rosties were anemic, the mash potatoes looked like last weeks left overs, really dry to look at. I tried to get a portion just to see if they were as bad as they looked and I had to slice into them rather than scoop them so I didn't bother. Yorkshire pud was thick and heavy. It was such a let own and not at all worth the money. Its a fact we will not return in the future unless we hear its improves dramatically. It doesn't even rank as high as the one star I've given.

The Sunday lunch is pretty good, and has vegetarian sausages available. The staff were attentive and friendly too.

We'd booked as a group, for 7.30. On arrival, the place was empty. We were shown to a table in the conservatory, which is about as far as you can get from the bar in a big pub, and it was cold. We were then told to order straight away as the kitchen would close at 8. This hadn't been made clear on booking. The waitress said it was on their website. (I've just looked, it isn't obvious) Waitress then takes drinks orders at the table, and these were added to a bill, but we had to order food, and pay for it, at the bar. Food arrived, out of 5 orders one was wrong. I had ordered grilled tuna. I got a small piece of tuna, overcooked and completely dry. Boiled new potatoes, a big pile, no butter or dressing. With salad, which was just tomato, cucumber, lettuce, in big chunks with no dressing. I asked for mayonnaise, and got a pile of little packets, just dumped on the table. So then, having pre-paid our food, we had to go and settle the drinks bill. Weird. I would not recommend this place at all.

Myself and my Husband have been twice now this month, eaten different meals each time, all I can say is tasteless, very bland. Meals not cheap. We have booked for Christmas day but will be cancelling at £85 each.

Wife had the sirloin steak, the onion rings where great. I had the steak and ale pie which was good.

It’s a few years since we’ve visited this beautiful establishment and it didn’t disappoint. We chose the Fish special and everything was delicious with generous portions especially the fish. Staff were good and attentive so overall a great experience, and reasonably priced menu ….. we will be back.

This was one of the the worst meals we have ever had . Poor quality tasteless food with no effort to presentation or flavour . Shockingly bad !

A great place to eat and have a drink.

Only had a shandy, no food. Staff very polite & hard working. Liked how the owners have converted the old cellars in the gents toilet, but kept the old cellars still visible. Cannot comment on the ladies as I forgot to wear a frock..!!!

First time in years we've been here perfect food and drink had, will definitely visit again.

It’s been a long time since we visited this lovely pub that has an interesting and historic background. We don’t live that far away and we’re pleased when it went into new ownership after a succession of landlords that never seemed to quite make it. Anyway now for our experience which I always say is about one day not a period of time when things can vary. This is a large pub with several eating areas and on our day we were shown to a very airy and light conservatory for our lunch. We ordered our drinks and had a dry White House wine which was pleasant if a little on the expensive side in relation to its quality. After a short time we ordered our meal. I ordered the Cajun chicken and had chips instead of rice and my partner went for the steak and ale pie. I love Cajun food but have to say this one was far too spicy for me and I left most of it. I am not saying there was anything wrong with it but it wasn’t for my taste. My partner had the steak and ale pie and was really pleased to see a short pastry on the top instead of the more familiar and over done puff pastry. The chips here are a little odd and I suspect they were blanched before being cooked which if you have ever cooked them this way you will know the final product is a very unpleasant soggy experience and not really acceptable. I was a little disappointed with the food and certainly wasn’t thinking of returning soon. I have as always tried to be constructive in my review and have not unfairly mentioned any one personally however one small question to management. Why does a pub with such a historical a local standing have Cajun on its menu?

The menu is small but cooked to order, and well cooked too. The portions are value for money. The pub appears to be a family I'm probably wrong but it gives that feeling 🙂 The serving staff are friendly and relaxed. The interior is very well presented and looked after. It's worth a visit if you're in the area

Visited lunchtime not very busy.

Visited recently on a warm Saturday afternoon. We ate outside and everyone enjoyed their meals especially me as I had a steak pie which was delicious and huge. In fact I couldn’t manage to eat all of my meal and left some double cooked chips. They serve Peroni, Bier Morreti and Cruzcampo which is another bonus .

Smashing! New people are well worth it.very pleasant atmosphere with good views of the gardens and beyond. Plate full of yummy grub.

Excellent service, thank you to all. Was 13 of us for a surprise birthday. I gave all orders in before and it was delivered to our table within a reasonable time for the amount of people. Staff were really nice and friendly and the drinks choice was good. All in all we had a great time.

4 of us went for Sunday dinner. Great place, nice selection of drinks. It's a carvery which you pay for at the bar and get a little ticket. Good selection of Veg, 3 meats to choose from. Badly let down by the gravy. Just too Herby. Get a nice beef gravy and would highly recommend. Oh great staff aswell

A fabulous pub with food just outside Rotherham, good friendly service, good selection on the menu, though may have liked one or two more vegetarian options, however, I went for the fish/chips and this was really good, well cooked and also fat potato chips that had good taste, all in a all a very good classic pub meal!

First time here for a while, for a family birthday meal. Both food and service was excellent. The staff were really attentive and food quality top drawer. Will call again !!! Thank you.

If you want a home cooked meal, this place is brilliant, Wendy was our server and she was fantastic 😀 definitely recommend and it's on my doorstep aswell. 😁

Really nice Sunday dinner, will be back in the future 100%. Second visit today and tried the carvery, it was very nice and certainly worth a visit if you are in the area. Great pub, with lovely decor and nice staff.

Lovely first time visit We had never been here before but read it had changed management so thought we would give it a try! We were not disappointed, the food was amazing and very generous portions. There was a wedding taking place, but this did not affect the service. The staff were all very friendly and efficient . We will definitely be back.

Can't think of any reason to score lower for a public House that serves food. Food, service and atmosphere all met my expectations for a public house serving food at early tea time. Visited last time about 7 years ago. Its very different now in a good way! Ordered mains and we both had same. We were both impressed with the Lamb Koftas. Compliments were given to waiting staff on quality of food and we were advised that the Earl has a new chef recently. Well that chef needs to stay! VERY TASTY KOFTAS and presented well. Waiting staff were pleasant and unintrusive. We were busy chatting and hadn't taken time to look over the menu when asked if ready to order. NO problem, they just came back a short time after and took our order. Really pleasant decor inside, relaxing comfortable feel. Only regret I have is that I forgot to leave a tip as my Co diner was treating me and she had gone to the bar to pay. I'm so sorry as was very worthy of a tip. I'll definitely be visiting again soon and certainly won't leave it 7 years before next visit, now that I've had such a good experience. I recommend this place most definitely.

The Earl has been taken over by new owners recently and retained some of the original wonderful staff. The food has been amazing, the portions are decent and the pub itself is so homely. Recommend a visit. A firm favourite for our family

Catch of the day was ordered.... disappointed as tinned mushy peas, frozen chips and a fish....£16....I expected something a bit more appetising than that to be honest. Edible but over priced. Service on the other hand was good, polite and addressed any issues raised.

Waited 15 minutes, had to look for someone to take a drinks order...ordered food at the same time as drinks... thought that best....the staff member took the order without writing anything down, only to come back twice, to check what we'd ordered. Food came reasonably quickly (within 35 mins). All had separate meals, food was tepid, sausage and mash was tasteless, pie crust was like granite...no enquiry if everything was ok. Only found out about people's food in the car....I would have complained. Didn't order pudding, just wanted to get out, but had to go looking for the staff again as it took 15 minutes and still no sign of the bill that was requested. Quality of service (when it wasn't that busy) was poor, food was poor. On-line menu didn't match in-house menu

Went in this afternoon i had steak and ale pie my wife had fish and chips both meals were excellent after we had brownies and ice cream wow will be going again soon.

I would like yo say a Big Thankyou to all the staff and the chef for putting on such great hot and cold buffy such a lovely spread and the Dj did a great job everyone had a great time it was fantastic. Xx

We ate at 6pm. Food was lovely had the pie chips and peas,provided extra gravy. Staff really helpful and friendly. The pub was really quiet when we sat down but was filling up as we left. Only Tuesday so seemed quite busy at 7.30pm

Food excellent and plenty to eat.

On arrival we were seated pretty quickly but not advised there would be a wait for food. After 25mins no one had been to take our order so we had to go and ask. Our food arrived another 30mins later and the chicken burger was burnt, the breaded covering was actually black! We had to go to the bar for our drinks, one person working who didn’t seem to care that he had a large wait of people wanting to be served he just took his time meaning we waited 10mins to get a drink, very poor and won’t be returning.

Very bad food never had such bland food would have been better going to weatherspoons and very expensive for what it was.

Terrible food was bland and overpriced iv had better microwave meals than there food . Services was also bad took ages. I would not recommend this place shame as its a nice pub but terrible food.

I booked a table for five of us & stated that it was a birthday lunch on the online booking, which wasn’t addressed other than the waitress wishing my birthday guest HB. Why ask the question-Any special recommendations? We were passed menus but as it was lunchtime we wanted a lunchtime option. The waitress plonked down a couple of the menus on the table. The set out of the lunchtime menu is very amateur in its presentation with the offer of 3 mains only. Cost 2 for £14. For a lunchtime option I consider this to be very poor choice. However 3 of the group chose the starter & main option. The other 2 having a starter & baked potato. I had the goujons starter which were over cooked. The skin on the baked potato was very hard so I didn’t eat it. The homemade coleslaw was made with large pieces of cabbage in it, very unappetising. When we called for the bill I was told to go to the bar, waited no one there. Sat back down & waited no sign of anyone. After 10 minutes man came from room behind bar & I requested we wanted to pay the bill. I sighted the bill & noticed it was incorrect. They had itemised everything on our bill & didn’t group the two for £14, causing our total to be way over the correct amount. This venue has a pleasant, fabulous interior & great parking. The organisation & food is only as good as the people who are running it. Today it didn’t feel like it was run by anyone only going through the motions, very hit & miss.

I was taken by friends for my birthday and we were all very disappointed. We had to ask if they had a lunch menu as it was not offered and then two for the whole party were literally thrown on the table. We had to wait a long time to order then almost 30 minutes for our starters. The starters were very poor, my friend had burnt chicken gougons and the garlic mushrooms had 5 pieces of chopped mushrooms in a cheese sauce served with burnt toast.The main course food was better but the chips were overcooked. After we had eaten and cleared we waited 20 minutes for someone to appear so that we could ask for the bill. My friend had to go and find them and was told to wait! Eventually they gave us a bill which was overcharging us by £30! They had charged 3 of us the full price for starters and mains instead of the lunchtime offer. A revised bill was finally produced but just had a total and no itemised list. We did pay this amount but if it was correct the drinks were very expensive. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Any so called ‘chefs’ that deem oven chips acceptable need to bugger off back to McDonald’s! The food was as boring as the looks on the staff faces! Clearly no one who works there wants to be there as service was slow and staff literally looked like they were completing community service! (See below for manager having a Karen moment because they didn’t like my review - report me - think you’ll find it’s an option to which I’m entitled. Now you have a good day)

We used the Earl to host mum's wake. I was surprised by the night quality if the food given we were catering for 45 guests. We chose the standard hot buffet which was really well presented on time with generous or even over generous portions, we certainly had excess food. The lasagne and the curry were very tasty. The staff were also attentive and supportive, and we were given an extremely pleasant area overlooking the gardens exclusively for the event. Overall a very well managed event. I have no hesitation in recommending the venue for such an event.

A really nice pub, pleasantly surprised when we walked through the doors. However the food wasn't so good. I ordered catch of the day the fish was overcooked, so was the chips. The service was less than impressive and getting someone to bring the bill over was difficult. I would go for a drink, but definitely not food. Its a shame....

Really lovely place, staff incredibly helpful, food is really good and presented well. Wheelchair accessible with enabled parking places. Advise you to book. Large party's book in advance not to be disappointed.

Always a lovely welcome at The Earl of Strafford. Food is top-notch, service can be a little slow at times.

Went at lunchtime as a party of 4 and booked for 12.30. Both the lasagne and sticky toffee sponge were sold out at 12.30! We had 2 meals off the lunchtime menu and they were ok. My son had burger and sweet potato fries and there were such a small portion of fries in the dish it was a joke and it cost an extra £1.50. The worse meal by far was the hake and scallop tagliatelle that my daughter had. It came in a dish swimming in sauce with hardly any tagliatelle in the bottom. The hake was a 2 inch piece of fish plonked on top with ONE scallop placed on top. It was the size of a child's meal and cost almost £15. Seriously don't bother going here, there are much better pubs serving much better food for the money. Get the food right and people will come, it's not rocket science! That's probably why it's going to be changing hands on 17th April.

One of the best pub Sunday dinners I’ve had. Staff were all lovely too.

I've been here a few times with my partner as he went with his family not too long ago and had a great experience, however our experience didn't match. Both times we felt as if we were forgotten, we had our food order taken and received the food after an expected wait, however no one checked to see if we wanted any sauces or to check how our meal was, even though the table opposite us -which was a bigger table- was asked this, no one came to clear our table or ask if we wanted to order dessert and no one was around for us to ask for the bill meaning we had to go to the bar to pay. All in all it's a shame as we really enjoy the food however the service lets down our experience.

Had my 1st visit here earlier with my parents and daughter, the food service was super fast and at a lovely temperature, also tasted as good as it looked! My daughter started getting a little tired however Nicole (staff) offered to help and push her around while I ate my food Can honestly say my 1st experience here was amazing and will definitely be returning next time with my dog! Spent mothering Sunday here £25 per head for 3 courses. Food was tasty and reasonably priced.

Well my review was from 6 years ago, so I didn't really expect a reply from yourselves at this time!

Been a few times in the last few months. First time we had a Sunday dinner, which was really nice. Service was poor though. We had to keep getting up to go ask someone for everything. 2nd visit, it was dead. There were only about 3 groups in, which is absolutely fine for us so no complaint there. However, our starters were all cold. In fact, one part was still frozen. So, they had to be returned. We then skipped that and went straight to the mains, which seemed quite over cooked. So, we had one extreme to the other. I imagine the "chef" was just a trainee or something. The waitress was extremely apologetic and very helpful and understanding. Just been again today for a Sunday dinner. Service was extremely poor again. We had to keep getting up to find someone to ask to order or ask for something. Very poor, which is a real shame because the food is extremely. If you are in a rush, then don't go here.

Quiet dinner time visit. Food always good as well as the service. Conservatory has lovely view.

Been here on a few occasions, always able to walk in a get a table without booking. This time brought the dog along as it's got a side area dog friendly Try the Earl Burger plenty for anyone including the dog.

Terrible! Booked for my Birthday on-line. Greeted by an unfriendly assistant who said I had booked a table for 3 not 5. My husband pointed out that she was looking at the wrong booking and had booked someone else in our booking. With some huffing and puffing we were seated. There were 2 funerals booked in at the same time time, not what you want on your birthday. Had I known this I would not have booked. Starter calamari and prawns with deep fried and very dry and overcooked as was the hunters chicken. No home cooked food all frozen and ping food. Such a shame as previously one of my favourite places. First visit under the new management. Will not be returning.

Dropped in for a meal. Standard pub food, nothing fancy but enjoyed it. Service was quick as the pub was quiet. Lovely space inside and served Bradfield Brewery on tap which was a bonus. Will definitely call in again.

Disappointing Sunday lunch, mostly cold. Lovely staff, and will give them another chance, but was a shame the kitchen got a bit overwhelmed.

Popped in after work for a meal with the missus. Ribeye was pretty good, decent sized portions, and the Bradfield Farmers was well looked after. Will likely go again.

We had a Wake held here today for my Late Nan. I cannot recommend this place enough! The staff were all very pleasant and professional and the food was absolutely delicious, even the vegetarian options were absolutely lovely. The restaurant/pub has lovely vibe to it modern but traditional.

First time in here despite living in the area all my life. Lovely interior, more modern than you would expect. Only had drinks but the food look lovely that others were having. A little pricey but you expect that in larger places that have such lovely interiors, really recommend.

Our initial visit to this place was this Sunday, and it definitely won’t be our last. The Sunday lunch was outstanding. The staff were remarkably friendly, and the place had a charming atmosphere.

Went here on Boxing day for a family meal Gave this place a wide berth for a while. However, now it has new owners decided to give it a whirl. Service was a little slow, food and drinks were good. The kids meals are probably the best I've seen in a pub. Nice to see the phoenix rise from the flames. Shame it's lost its children's play area at the back. If this had still been here it would have got 5 stars from me.

I have been to this location a number of times and generally the food has been of reasonable quality. Standard pub chain type food, nothing special. The service has always fallen a bit below par on my visits. Having worked in the hospitality industries for many years, I feel a bit more could be done to improve the customer experience during their visit. The place itself is nicely decorated. Parking is plentiful and it has the bonus of being dog friendly which is great. Lots of potential but not being made the most of unfortunately.

Called in by chance after seeing they were dog friendly after a walk around near by Thrybergh park. Great food with value for money on 2 or 3 course options. Our dog Eric had a lovely little blanket put out with his own bowl of water & a few treats. We will definitely be coming back.

Had lunch on Christmas Day. Bruchetta was actually a small square of soggy sliced bread with topping, not nice. The steak was beautiful, 2 other guests had turkey, but not a lot of it on the plate. We were sat in the bar area due to a mix up with our booking time and although we knew this before arrival, we did not like it. The atmosphere was not the same as in the 2 main dining areas and there were people just in for a drink, some who were quite loud. It felt as if we had been forgotten about, we had to go to the bar for our own drinks, which I don't feel we should have had to, whilst we were eating. We were sat waiting for sometime for our bill, again due to a mix up with our booking. Having had a booking accepted, then cancelled last year, I would have thought that our visit this time would be much more organised, especially as they were aware of all mix ups there had been.

I've been here before and not had an issue. Today however, totally different story! Disappointing is the most complimentary thing I can say. A few weeks ago my friend and I ordered a fish gujon sandwich at a different establishment - we got 3 to 4 fat, crispy gujons on thick fresh farmhouse bread with fresh salad. Today at the EoS we saw the same thing on the menu, fancied it and ordered it. What we were served was a single fish gujon, smushed in the middle of a withered salad sandwich. It was like they only had 2 gujons left and shared them between me and my friend. The side salad greenery was drying out and clearly not fresh either. Macdonald's serve better quality food than what we got today, and I dislike Macdonald's. Hell, I've had better fish finger sandwiches in budget cafés. As I say, disappointing.

Absolutely beautiful and magical place to have your Christmas Dinner with my family. The staff can't do enough for you,very polite and friendly. We love it there 😋🤤😍🥰.

Lovely afternoon Christmas meal for Christmas eve be back again new years day

We were looking for somewhere for 9 people on Christmas Eve at relatively short notice and The Earl of Strafford had space. I am so glad they did because we had a lovely time. The food and service were 1st class and we will be back.

Went with a group for brunch. I ordered fish goujons but unfortunately the waitress came back to tell me they hadn't any so had to make another choice, so I chose a small breakfast, which was nice but lacked a slice of toast. The waitress was really lovely and helpful throughout.

We booked at very short notice for the same day a party of 10 and were not disappointed the food was excellent with extra provided when requested. All the staff were very friendly and excellent service would not hesitate to return

A really nice pub. A bit "big" to have proper pub atmosphere but nice food, a wide range of drinks and excellent staff.

Visited recently with our grandson for a special tea and we was not disappointed. all staff that we met were friendly and efficient and the food was delicious. Thank you.

Christmas meal tonight not great at all. Poor quality cold food and extremely slow service as it took the best part of 3 hours to be served 3 courses. Worst meal I’ve had in a long time. Avoid. Christmas tree lovely though.

I love this place. It may have flaws but I can never find them. Their Stilton and peppercorn sauce with stakes is to die for. And I will kill again for it.

Turkey special. What a joke. Vegetables? Well you get 1 parsnip. No brocolli (as stated) no carrots no peas no sprouts. Just a parsnip. A small dollop of mash and a yorkshire pudding and 2 small slices of turkey. No stuffing either We were just going to pop for a cheap and cheery wetherspoons dinner and that's what we should have done because they actually provide a substantial meal. Wow just wow. Never again.

Went for Christmas party great atmosphere Christmas market being held at same time lovely and clean great staff and food service was good table set with Christmas crackers and hats perfect for family get together.

We have been here 3 times 1st time 18 months or so ago it was fantastic, 2nd time was ok but not great, we ate here the 3rd time last week the waiting staff were fantastic the restaurant is clean and welcoming but I'm afraid the food was tearable we sent one plate of food back completely and the festive burger is not particularly festive and tasted bland , I hope this was just a bad night in the kitchen, shame as we have had good food here before

Visited in October for our uncles 80th birthday - hubby ordered the lamb shank and was presented with cold mash, cold vegetables a frozen roast potato and a thimble full of cold gravy - we put this down to it been extremely busy and didn’t complain ….. right …. Visited again today (19.11.23) for my brother-in-laws 60th birthday, again a large party. My hubby ordered the turkey and ham hock pie and was presented with what looked like a microwave pukka pie which in fairness was very hot accompanied with cold (powdered) mash potatoes, cold sprouts, cold broccoli, roast parsnip (never been roasted) a slice of stuffing (more like an ice hockey puck) and a thimble of cold gravy. My husband spoke to the waitress who was very polite and understanding who sent it back and asked him if he wanted something else which he declined. The Manager then came out to ask how our meals were, the response from him was “outstanding” we said we had sent ours back as it was inedible - his response was oh ok and he walked off - what a manager hey who obviously cares about his customers and the quality of food they serve. Can we just add the waitresses were very friendly and understanding and polite. Now then - one last comment from me - Nicole your name was …. If you spoke to me the way you spoke to your staff - well I’m surprised they still work with you - I’d tell you exactly where you can shove your job you were very rude and arrogant to them and I felt embarrassed - perhaps you would benefit from some customer care training. I know if I spoke to people the way you did in my job I’d be out of one

As soon as we got out the car we just knew it was going to be a bad experience. Walked in and not a single staff member in site so we just took it upon ourselves to sit ourselves down seen as tho the staff couldnt. When we did eventually see a member of staff we was told to order at the bar which was all good. It was as if all the staff were newbies because everything was that slow. All I wanted was a drink but turns out that was a 15 minute wait. Proper quick service that. If your wanting NICE FOOD don’t come here. Vegetables were rock hard and freezing. I would rather wait 45 minutes and the food come out at the right temperature than waiting 20 minutes and it coming out cold. Definitely not a pleasant visit. Won’t be back. And most certainly not a place I’d recommend. We could’ve just gone on a bad day but by the looks of it, it’s the normality. Oh and tell your staff to smile please, maybe then you might get more customers. I’m giving 2 stars purely because the restaurant was reasonably clean.

Had an absolutely fantastic early christmas lunch with the family here - lovely service team, great food, fantastic value. I wish i reemembered the name of the lady (brown hair at the bar) who also helped us get points for some free beers. She was great. I would highly recommend and will be back.
