Lovely pub in central Cambridge . Really popular and full of history. RAF and pilots from all over the world go and write on the walls. This goes back to the 2rd world war. Then it’s where crick and Watson announce the discovery of DNA. Fascinating. We only had a sharing platter there but it was good.

Traditional English pub, one of the oldest in Cambridge and with a lot of history, the discovery of DNA was celebrated in this bar. You can order the house beer DNA, it is a fairly decent typical English ale. It was also a common place for pilots during World War II and they have an area full of aviators' patches and signatures. As for food, the options are typical of a pub but with good quality. Plus they had pretty delicious duck 😋

The Eagle Pub in Cambridge is a historic establishment that offers a selection of real ales and traditional British food, like fish and chips and pies. The food and drinks are great, but the best thing about it is it's history and ambience. During WWII, airmen frequented the pub and left graffiti on the ceiling and walls using candles, lighters, and lipstick (a tradition preserved to this day), and, its where Crick and Watson, announced their discovery of DNA.

The Eagle has been a tourist spot since the announcement of the discovery of DNA over 70 years ago. We were able to get a table without reserving one before we arrived there early. Because of its popularity, I thought the quality of food might be compromised. My fish and chips turned out to be better than expected - the cod fillet was moist and the batter was light and crispy. My dog was kindly offered a bowl of water. Every single piece of artefact and old photo inside the pub tells a story. Definitely a great place for experiencing a traditional pub.

Booked a Xmas lunch here for 7 people. We work in the genetics department at cambridge university so thought it would be apt to have our staff lunch there. The pub is fantastic, so much history, lots to look at, but the food let them down. We had booked well in advance, over a month and they only had 2 christmas dinners even tho they must have known we were coming that day and they had ran out of cauliflower for the 2 meals. There's a market a few walks away guys, you could get fresh veg there!! So we ended up with 2 of us having the dinners and the rest having burgers etc. Not what we wanted so won't be back next year. The drink menu is nothing short of impressive, with a wide variety of cask ales, craft beers. The real standout, however, is the pub's selection of traditional British ales, which are perfect for any ale enthusiast looking to experience authentic brews. The bar staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to recommend something to suit your taste. As for the food, it’s comfort food at its best. The fish and chips are crispy and golden, with a perfectly flaky interior, while the stake and ale pie is a hearty, savory delight. The portion sizes are generous, ensuring you leave feeling satisfied. Service is efficient and friendly, with the staff going out of their way to make sure you feel at home. Experience that feels like a genuine slice of English pub culture. Overall, Eagle is a must-visit for anyone looking for a cozy, authentic pub experience. The Cambridge Old Bar was founded in 1667. Although it is the second oldest pub in Cambridge, its popularity may be higher than that of the oldest one. The main reason is naturally its legend and story. It was Francis Crick who discovered DNA when the Cavendish Laboratory was still nearby. It is a place where James Watson often visited and "worked over lunch". Crick also announced this major discovery with Watson in the pub. Therefore, there are signs commemorating related deeds hanging at the entrance and inside of The Eagle. The indoor environment of The Eagle, which is still frequently visited by teachers and students from nearby Cambridge, is quite quaint and very popular. I especially like the paintings hanging on the walls that have a bit of a scientific and artistic style. For the meal, this time I ordered not the "signature" fish & chips promoted by The Eagle, but the steak, which is also a regular customer of classic British pub food. I thought that a pub like The Eagle would become famous mainly for non-meal factors. The food may be okay, but unexpectedly, it exceeded expectations. The steak itself was well cooked and seasoned. The onion rings and fries that came with it were not overly seasoned and had enough aroma. They were quite comfortable and enjoyable to eat, and the ingredients were also good. Very good match. It seems that part of the popularity of The Eagle, located in the University District of Cambridge, is also due to its delicious food. recommend
