Delicious food and stellar beer selection. Combined with the history and ambiance of the setting, especially in The RAF Bar, that is why The Eagle is a mandatory stop for me whenever I'm in Cambridge.

Booked a Xmas lunch here for 7 people. We work in the genetics department at cambridge university so thought it would be apt to have our staff lunch there. The pub is fantastic, so much history, lots to look at, but the food let them down. We had booked well in advance, over a month and they only had 2 christmas dinners even tho they must have known we were coming that day and they had ran out of cauliflower for the 2 meals. There's a market a few walks away guys, you could get fresh veg there!! So we ended up with 2 of us having the dinners and the rest having burgers etc. Not what we wanted so won't be back next year. What a shame on what otherwise is a great place.

I used to like this bar, but now I am a bit disappointed. The food is still cheap and delicious, not very exquisite, but it is good to drink and eat. This time I had garlic butter pork chop which was delicious. I don’t know what happened to the beer. It’s as if I didn’t finish it at the dormitory party last night and put it in the refrigerator to drink today. The atmosphere is still good. If you are nearby, you can come and do a DNA pilgrimage, but there is no need to go out of your way.

The food was tasty and the atmosphere lovely, but what made us fell in love with the place was an absolutely extraordinary manager (sadly we didn’t ask the name). The drink menu is nothing short of impressive, with a wide variety of cask ales, craft beers. The real standout, however, is the pub's selection of traditional British ales, which are perfect for any ale enthusiast looking to experience authentic brews. The bar staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to recommend something to suit your taste. As for the food, it’s comfort food at its best. The fish and chips are crispy and golden, with a perfectly flaky interior, while the stake and ale pie is a hearty, savory delight. The portion sizes are generous, ensuring you leave feeling satisfied. Service is efficient and friendly, with the staff going out of their way to make sure you feel at home. Experience that feels like a genuine slice of English pub culture. Overall, Eagle is a must-visit for anyone looking for a cozy, authentic pub experience. With its great selection of drinks, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere, it's easy to see why this place is beloved by locals and newcomers alike.

The Cambridge Old Bar was founded in 1667. Although it is the second oldest pub in Cambridge, its popularity may be higher than that of the oldest one. The main reason is naturally its legend and story. It was Francis Crick who discovered DNA when the Cavendish Laboratory was still nearby. It is a place where James Watson often visited and "worked over lunch". Crick also announced this major discovery with Watson in the pub. Therefore, there are signs commemorating related deeds hanging at the entrance and inside of The Eagle. The indoor environment of The Eagle, which is still frequently visited by teachers and students from nearby Cambridge, is quite quaint and very popular. I especially like the paintings hanging on the walls that have a bit of a scientific and artistic style. For the meal, this time I ordered not the "signature" fish & chips promoted by The Eagle, but the steak, which is also a regular customer of classic British pub food. I thought that a pub like The Eagle would become famous mainly for non-meal factors. The food may be okay, but unexpectedly, it exceeded expectations. The steak itself was well cooked and seasoned. The onion rings and fries that came with it were not overly seasoned and had enough aroma. They were quite comfortable and enjoyable to eat, and the ingredients were also good. Very good match. It seems that part of the popularity of The Eagle, located in the University District of Cambridge, is also due to its delicious food. recommend

We had beef Sunday roast. They had run out of chicken. It came warm, not hot. Overall it was pretty blunt. The cabbage was definitely boiled and then put under fire to burn it a little to make it look as if it was roasted but it was definitely not roasted, just made to look it. The gravy was disappointing, lukewarm and tasteless. We asked for more gravy, which never came. They seemed to be busy that day. It’s a very old, large pub. They need to improve their services and food though.

Popped in for a quick drink while out and about on a trip to Cambridge. Inside it was welcoming and warm, suitably bustling and surprisingly large, sprawling gently into various rooms. The bar staff were friendly and helpful, supplying my husband with a couple of samples of local beers whilst he decided what he wanted. They knew their products well and were able to describe what was on tap in some detail. Bar snacks were nice and served in little tubs not plastic packets. Lots of little things to look at on the walls ect. We never went into the beer garden but it looked full and friendly as we went past.

Don't Panic As a beginner of the UK pub grub restaurants, it's too early to give a proper rating to Eagle yet. I need to try different pub grub restaurants in the Cambridge town centre before I give a conclusion. I think the UK style burger was very different to the US Diner ones. The UK ones are more lean. Too bad the bun was not warm. Glad that the fries were hot. The portion of the Sunday roast was relatively small, but it's acceptable. As the price was relatively cheap for the location. I thought the roast potatoes was flavourful. Crispy outside but soft inside. The gravy was not too salty. The restaurant looks rustic but clean, looks stylish. The inside is bigger than I expected. I will come back to adjust the rating.

Historic pub on the Cambridge sightseeing trail (you can read the other reviews for the history, which will be summarised more eloquently than I can), yet retains an authentic and non-touristic touch. Came on a Saturday lunch in Oct 2024 for food and a second time in the late afternoon for drinks/snacks. Food wise the weekend specials were decent for the price and location. In particular I had a confit duck leg on cabbage and potatoes and my companion had wild boar sausages on mash. There’s a wide variety of tap and cask ales but not so much in terms of craft beer or cider. Still, a great place to soak in the history and the place is constantly buzzy with people admiring the RAF graffiti or talking about Watson & Crick.

I haven’t been this disappointed in a long time. Living in Sweden, I wont get a Sunday roast unless I make it myself. Hence, during a weekend trip to Cambridge I wanted to make sure that the actual Sunday roast I got was a great one. After reading the reviews I was sold but I was sold a lie. We arrive at 12:45 to find out that they have run out of chicken. How is it possible to run out of chicken not even gone 13? Seeing as the rest of the items on a Sunday roast are still something I’ve missed I decided to give the beef a try. Both me and my partner chose the beef and we both had very dry pieces of meat as well as it being filled with sinew. The Yorkshire pudding was dry and didn’t taste of anything, the potatoes were a weird texture where many pieces were just empty and dry on the inside. The cauliflower cheese and the carrots were nice and the gravy was too. However, that is where it ended. The atmosphere was nice but unfortunately we were booked at a table that was in the middle of a doorway so people were constantly bumping into my partner and our table. Utterly devastated and I actually cried after our visit here.
