The staff were very helpful and the locals very welcoming. Small shower and toilet facilities however, are immaculate. With electric hook up and drinking water. We laughed for the whole time we were their with this lovely and friendly team. Best Manjit from Henley in Arden

I had my first pint of Abbot’s ale at this pub after a long time . What an amazing tasting beer and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But the real highlight of our visit was was the warmth of the landlady , Janet, and her good friend Frances . It was so wonderful to converse with that family and they made us feel so welcome . I would highly recommend this pub for its traditional design and the beer was out of this world. Than you so much for a lovely start to our vacation in Matlock !!! Visiting Matlock as a family I decided we’d visit The Duke William as it carries the Cask Ale Cert. Arrived with just one hour before they closed. Greated by a very pleasant lady who took our drinks order. ‘Landlord’ was on tap as well which was music to my belly. We asked about local information including other drink and food establishments local to Matlock Bath. The lady was so helpful and polite. We sat out the back in the garden, we being my girlfriend, daughter and son (14 and 9). There is a lovey bar area and separate bar lounge. Very good atmosphere, cracking pub for all. Well worth the stop or two and not over priced at all. Highly recommended.

From the outside the pub looks to be a great building and perfect location. Keen to order food we were told there was only one chef at 7pm and it was an hour wait, so didn’t bother eating. There were only 2 couples waiting for food. Weird atmosphere of being an inconvenience and a pub that didn’t want to serve food.

Decided to book The Duke William for an evening meal after reading the reviews. The staff were very welcoming and very pleasant. The food we both ordered Pie, 1 x steak and ale and the other steak and kidney, the gravy was very tasty, but just not enough meat in the dish. I think I counted 3 pieces in my dish, and my husband said his was the same, which was a shame because after reading the reviews we expected better for the price we paid. I’m only pleased we got chips, as they mopped all the gravy up in the dish, The restaurant was also a cold room so it made me feel uncomfortable. It also didn’t help that another party who was leaving opened the exit door but left it open while they where talking and saying there goodbyes, another words they where not bothered about anyone one else eating in the restaurant, So after our food we decided to move into the bar area for a few drinks after we had our food, as it was much cosier. Would we return again if we visited Matlock. I don’t think so Sorry!!

We have been eating at Stones for years, in fact we used to eat at that same restaurant even before it was Stones. We came away this weekend quite surprised and disappointed. We wondered if it was just us, but we can see other recent reviewers feel the same way. We have had the taster menu many times but this weekend we opted for the three course dinner menu. The food was, as always, presented well and delicious, but Chef seems to have lost all perspective between the size of a standard course and a taster course. The pork main dish was one very small medallion of pork, not much bigger than a bottle top and a 1” cube of belly pork, half a roasted carrot and a small spoon of mashed potato. The beef fillet, with a £4 supplement was two small strips of beef, about a quarter of a small fillet steak - in fact the £4 supplement would have easily covered the cost of the steak served. The set cream dessert, a small teaspoon quenelle of set cream, a miniature scoop of ice cream and a piece of shortbread smaller than the pork medallion if that were possible. Two ladies on the next table were having the taster menu and their set cream dessert was served at the same time. In retrospect I’m sure the one served at our table must have been plated at the same time, it’s difficult to see how it could have been served any smaller as a taster course. If we are noticing the change then other regular, loyal customers must be noticing too. Our memories aren’t incorrect either, previous pictures on this site show substantially larger portions. In fact the restaurant advertising picture shows double the amount of beef than was served this weekend. Stones has always been our ‘go to’ restaurant for a special evening out, it would be such a shame if after all these years we are forced to consider pastures new.

Having first visited in May we decided to have lunch again as a family when I was in the area in October. We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn’t overly busy so nice and quiet to chat. Two of us picked the lasagne with a side of onion rings to share and the other meal was again the Hunter’s chicken. There was a bit of a wait for the meals to arrive but nobody minds waiting for freshly cooked food. Second time around and we were not disappointed as the high standards we enjoyed on our first visit were on display again. Piping hot, well presented and tasty lunches were thoroughly enjoyed but all three of us and the onion rings were excellent too. Clean plates all round and washed down with a nice pint and a lemon and lime. Walk off your lunch at Carsington which is just down the road! Really enjoyed our lunch so well done to all involved.

We ended up staying for lunch when the rest of the family returned from their bike ride. Lovely area selling gifts, books etc. A section of the car park is free for 2 hours if using the cafe or shop and pay and display elsewhere for bike hire etc. Would call again if in the area.

Review for the restaurant. Stunning location and building, beautiful decor. Service was brilliant, and the food was delicious. Great cocktail menu and everything was well presented. Highly recommended for a special occasion.
