Came for breakfast. Service was amazing and the food was divine! Best breakfast we have ever had! The sausages were amazing!

Friday night classic menu for us tonight. If you find yourself in Matlock Bath and in the mood for beautifully cooked Hadock/Cod & chips with a side plus the most delicious curry sauce imaginable, in a restaraunt with an Italian vibe , for no more than the cost of a takeaway, then, look no further. Forget Harry Ramsdens, this blows them all away. No hesitations in highly recommending. We will be back.

Excellent in all respects. Food top quality but not top prices. Staff efficient and committed to customers. Surroundings pleasant immaculate and comfortable. Dont walk past this restaurant - you'll regret it. Since last visited this restaurant has gone down hill. Chips were undercooked. Fish was chewy and tasteless. Staff were not friendly or very courteous. The person who I paid insisted on calling me "mate" was blunt and seemed fed up with the whole thing. Rude when i asked how to get to the toilet(blocked by table) and behaved as though I had no right to ask. Have eaten here for some years. Shall not be again. A shame.

After visiting Heights of Abraham i was hungry and come here for dinner. Tasty fish and chips. Portion was enough big even i took small set. And coffee hmmm finally was very good coffee pot at least not small like other places.

I just wanted to say a massive thanks to the whole staff. We were in Matlock Bath today to see the Illuminations but my daughter (3,5yo) started feeling really unwell possibly with an ear infection quite suddenly. The staff at the restaurant helped us out so much. They allowed me to wait inside the restaurant whilst my husband went to get our car, even though we were not paying customers (we were planning to be but had to change our plans). My daughter was also given a free drink and, if they could have, they would have offered us the possibility to order food to take away. Thank you so much for your humanity and kindness. Absolutely outstanding! We visited Matlock Baths on what might be one of the busiest days of the year. We were ealking past this place when one of the team there was stood next to the A-board menu talking to people. Steak pie immediately caught my eye, the smaller meals ideal for the other adults and the kids meals looked ideal for our kids who don't eat very much. We waited about 20 mins whoch I think is perfectly resonable. The food came and was excellent. As we were leaving we asked who the restaurant is named after and was told it was Gary Charles. All in all, an excellent place, excellent team and excellent food. Brilliant.

Staff were polite. Found it cold seated inside. Ordered the regular cod and chips. The fish was nice , the chips were awful, peas average. On the whole, disappointed.

Fabulous fish and chips, they were very busy but managed to squeeze our family is 6 in. There was a delay getting the order but it wasn't a problem, the atmosphere was great. Nothing was too much trouble including adapting for allergies and finding extra chairs to fit us in. The food was delicious and filling.

Menu looked good until we were told some options weren’t available after we made our choices. Jacket potato had a spoonful of beans and a few foot scrapings of cheese. Cornish pasty was soggy. Coke and staff were nice though! Was sat near the toilets and they were a little pongy! It was also freezing so take some hats and scarves for your meal. They seem well known for their fish and chips so we should’ve probably had them :)

Stopped for breakfast, what can I say. Amazing, beautiful bacon, fried bread.... Henderson on the table for my tomatoes😁. The bread was freshly sliced and so think. Filled us up for the. Staff were brilliant, smiling, friendly and fantastic service. Thank you, will be back and recommend

First time in Charles fish restaurant and must say absolutely lovely great value for your money and the fish and chips was fantastic also let's dogs inside will go again.

Had a full English breakfast, which was freshly cooked as we waited which was less than ten minutes. Food was good local produce that was well cooked and presented. Would recommend to anyone needing a hearty, tasty and filling breakfast. Filled me up for my day in Dove Dale.

For fish and chips in Matlock bath you are spoilt for choice but we think we made the good call visiting hear staff were polite and friendly food was cooked to order fresh and delicious as well as good portions and prices open most of day for different meals on the central strip in Matlock bath

Piss poor food. Small potions, well over priced. Don’t know how you can mess up chips and peas. Cheapest peas possible, had to put half ton of salt to get flavour.

Went for breakfast ...the menu said full English... no mushrooms or hash browns. My egg was broken and the yolk had spread all over the plate. The menu said 2 slices of toast... we were only served 6 slices between 4 people so someone needs to learn to count. Very disappointed.

Nice clean place. made to feel welcome. The eating area was light and cheerful. it was a little cramped re the table layout. stock drinks were piled by the counter on our visit. Old decor. The tables were clean looing and not sticky or had crumbs on them. The cutlery was clean and didn't look old .Knives were not blunt. Busy early in Moring but had option of being sat by door or in corner. We were shown a table and we had coffee and tea. All food and drinks were served. i feel this was because there were so may covers in a small area and it was just not feasible or safe to have customers moving around. obviously good from a profit point of view....The drinks we ordered were served in clean white tea pots. this gave us two drinks each. the music was just a little too Loud however it was tasteful and not annoying. Soft easy listening. The food was served quickly and it was Hot and cooked perfectly. The sausages were more slimmer than usual and it would of been nice to have traditional Bangers. No hash browns ,no mushrooms. we were give nice thick toasted bread 3 slices and it was nice quality with buttter.it did not come till a quarter way through our meal. The brown sauce packets looked old. We were asked if we wanted anything else to go with our meal. All staff were very polite and helpful. we were not rushed to leave after we had finished. The Price was acceptable, portions adequate (could of been a bit bigger).The Toilets (men's & women's) clean, possibly needed an update. all items present, hand dryer, Mirror, hand wash, plenty of toilet tissue. basically clean and well lit. female toilet didn't flush enough water to clear waste, dew to a leaking tank valve. In all a nice acceptable Breakfast. we would return as the staff were very nice and the eating area was clean and hygienic.

A quick pit stop for coffee and bacon sandwich before our ride into the Peaks. We were very impressed with both the value and service. Food and coffee was excellent, very friendly and attentive staff. We would definitely visit again when next in the area.

Oh dear - talk about intimidation- we bought two meals and a wine then my husband waited till he had eaten his meal to ask for a tea and was told “No we are closing soon” I asked for the manager and no one appeared - then an elderly guy who sounded drunk and rude told us that they were tired and working since 08:00 this morning - I told him that had someone come and asked us if there was anything else we wanted we would have ordered a tea earlier - my husband then went in to pay and all they wanted was an argument- then a young guy said to me “it was only a tea Darling” how rude - I will be complaining to trading standards and any other authority as this is pure intimidation- what a way to run a business - we will definitely be giving this a wide birth in the future as there are lots of other Polite eateries in Matlock Bath - I really felt threatened and will log with Derbyshire Police - if they treat us like that for asking for tea how do they treat vulnerable people?

Stopped off here for some breakfast while exploring Matlock bath. We couldn't fault the service, prices or the quality of food. For 2 of to have 2x pots of tea and 2 full English breakfasts , cost us £20. Inside and outside seating available. Fantastic place.

The best fish and chips on the street. Staff is always very friendly . Curry sauce is amazing . Food is being served on the plate (not paper). Very clean and high standard. Best price on the street also. We are always coming back here.

Once againl l spend an enjoyable day out in the Peak District calling at Matlock Bath for my evening meal. Having experienced the service and quality of Charles Restaurant in the past it was an easy decision to dine there again. Within seconds of my entry l was greeted with lovely smile from on of the staff and on settling on table 3 was asked if I would like refreshments, having already decided on fish and chips l placed my order there and then ! As all the food is prepared and served fresh it was a short while before the meal arrived. Every morsel was just as expected, cooked to perfection and a very generous portion it was ! Anyone thinking of visiting the area this summer should seriously consider paying them a visit, you will not be disappointed by the quality, service and their excellent menu and prices. Guaranteed 👍

Nice friendly staff and service, very clean, good location. Bit of a wait for food compared to other chip shops but worth the wait, huge portions and tasty food. I had the steak pie it was filled to the brim with steak, other guests had fish and chips again huge portions and really tasty would recommend

Used the restaurant not the hotel. Very polite and helpful staff, on street parking but able to park right outside the restaurant. Food quality is good and is freshly cooked.

Worst fish and chips I’ve genuinely ever had. Don’t waste your money. Batter is awful and if you order scampi take your microscope with you so you can find it amongst all the batter !

Absolutely awful! Bacon sandwich (no eggs after 11.00 am!). Two rashers of cold obviously pre cooked bacon on thick sliced buttered bread! I have honestly never had a worse bacon sandwich presented to me. The pot of tea was ok but then how can you mess up a pot of tea? Price for two - over £18. For sure won’t be going back or recommending.

The fish and chips is legendary. So good. Everything is fresh. The staff are very kind and professional. The place is lovely. No complaints. I will definitely come again.

First time eating at Charles restaurant. Husband and I had bacon sandwich and pot of tea each. Lovely fresh bread and bacon and great friendly service. We sat outside, the tables and the restaurant are very clean and they have good clean toilets for the customers. Would definitely eat there again

With lots of choices for places to eat in Matlock Bath, we decided to try somewhere new today, and we weren't disappointed! All staff were super friendly and our waiter was very engaging, he talked through the menu with me and my wife (I went slightly off menu and they were very accommodating) and even some to and listened to my 2 sons. Food was great, service was excellent (and very fast) and the food was great value for money. If you want your fish and chips in the comfort of a restaurant, rather than a chip shop. Then look no further! Thank you for your great service!

As we walked past the 2 gents said good morning to me and the wife. They had no idea we were coming in. From the time we decided to go in they weren't all over us, just said ' have a look at the menu and let us know when you're ready to order' Nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended. Lovely polite young lad and an older gentleman.

What a lovely restaurant, clean and very friendly staff, food was cooked to order, we had small adult meal chips egg peas and ham, although it was a small adult meal for £6.50 there was ample for a midday lunch. The staff were friendly and pleasant, the young lady who works there was very nice and chatted to us like we were old friends which was nice, and I wish her all the best for the future and I hope you enjoy Turkey. In all would visit again due to the homely and warm welcome plus excellent food served quickly and was hot Thank you Kath and Chris

don't know about the rooms as just called in for a hot chocolate this morning (9th may). friendly staff, lovely atmosphere, would have happily stayed for a meal but had to be somewhere else, although the food that other diners had looked delicious. highly recommended.

An early dart to Matlock Bath left me needing a quick breakfast. Called into Charles and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good food served quickly, and at a decent price. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

Great fish and chips, it's cooked perfectly and the piece of fish is sizeable, thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the staff are lovely.

Rooms not applicable as only went for lunch but the food was fantastic and a pot of coffee and Tea meant we have more than one cup which was fantastic. Lovely staff too.

Myself and The wife decided to eat and drink in there Friday night. We were not disappointed and made to feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door. Thankyou for the great service and tasty food, and we just loved the seaside type feel of the place. We will recommend this lovely and lively place to anyone and we shall be back. Neat place, friendly staff and great food cooked to order. Has bar if you want alcoholic drink. Outdoor seating with canopy. Has rooms to rent but I haven't stayed as I only live 45mins away. Highly recommend!

We soon realised that when in Matlock Bath we would need to have a chippy tea - well which chippy should we pick? Of course we turned to Tripadvisor and came across Charles Restaurant. Home made pie was really delicious, this was served with piping hot fresh chips and mushy peas. You can have a beer in there too! Really enjoyed our food, many thanks.

Want for breakfast not impressed had to send it back as half if it was cold so they hadn't checked that the beans or tomatoes was hot enough the tea wasn't overly hot having work in thus environment myself we have to take foid temperatures on every thing before it leaves the kitchen so will definitely not come back or recommend to friends

Matlock Bath is awash with fish and chip takeaways and restaurants, but we opted for Charles, having read one review where the reviewer said it was the best fish he’d ever had. I’m going to have to echo that. The haddock was perfect, the batter was light and delicious, and the portions were excellent. My wife opted for the half fish half scampi, and was equally impressed. Her curry sauce was the nicest she’d had from any chippy and my mushy peas were very good too. Some reviews say the prices are a bit steep. We found the prices on a par with what we’d expect to pay. Plus, the restaurant is licensed, so if you fancy a beer or a glass of wine with your meal, way to go.

Popped in for breakfast before heading to Heights of Abraham - great food (highly recommend the Full English Breakfast for £8.95 with plenty of thick white toast and fried bread), friendly staff and the restaurant is clean, accessible and not too squashed with tables.

Excellent fish and chip bar. Opted for cod and chips with curry sauce, and was not disappointed. The fish was so big it was hanging over the edges of the plate. Very crisp batter and not greasy. Piping hot, as it was freshly cooked. My wife can't eat fish due to an allergy, so she opted for the jacket potato with beans. Again, it was served piping hot and the potato was cooked all the way through. Excellent staff, very friendly. Highly recommended.

Popped in for two lattes yesterday morning and I wanted to write this review to say that the coffee was delicious, plus the chap serving us was very friendly. A real credit to your team. He seemed interested in his customers, plus efficient as well. Thanks for the experience - it made our day that little bit more special as my wife has been very ill and this was a trip for her. Highly Recommended. This was by far, the best fish and chips I have ever had. The fish was fresh, batter was crispy but not greasy, and the chips came in a decent portion size! You will not go hungry if you choose to eat here. Staff were lovely too! The menu is comprehensive and there is something on there for almost everyone, at a fair price too. I'm running out of superlatives.

Impromptu last minute drive up to Matlock during half term for tea, picked Charles for fish and chips, very friendly staff, quick service and delicious food 😎 fish and chips was lovely, my wife had the home made chicken pie and that was very good too

Well on a very wet dreary day we went for a ride out to Matlock bath and decided to go for breakfast. Charles cafe bar gives you a very warm welcome and staff are lovely. We ordered a full English breakfast and 2 teas. The breakfast was a good size and surprisingly it had fried bread, not often seen on breakfasts now. We also got toast included but couldn't manage all the toast. Food was good and the only improvement would be a slightly stronger teabag but when left to brew it was fine. All in all a very pleasant visit thank you.

Stopped off at Matlock on way home to Yorkshire. Came across this restaurant when looking for a late lunch. We had fish and chips and quiche. The food was lovely. The staff were friendly and attentive. It was out of season and midweek - so not the best of ambiance. Will be coming back when warmer. Looking forward to eating here again!

On Sunday, something strange happened. I looked out in the morning and so the sun in the sky, no rain no cloud but sun! to make the most of this we decided to visit Matlock Bath with no real agenda. We're so glad we did it was a fantastic way to spend half a day. We went for a long walk along the River with some great heights and views. We then visited the arcades, and it must have been our lucky day because we won in nearly every 2p machine. The plan was then to leave and have a healthy (it's January!) lunch at home however we were drawn in by the wonderful smells and menu at Charles, a roadside restaurant. three plates of chips and mushy peas later, we left Matlock Bath with big smiles on our faces. Go and visit now!

We decided to visit Charles Restaurant as my husband & daughter wanted Fish & Chips. On looking at the menu I noticed they did Jacket Potatoes too. As I’m eating healthy it suited us all. We were greeted by a lovely gentleman, who assured me they had Jacket potatoes so we sat down. On looking at the menu I noticed they did pouched Cod With a salad. OMG I’m so glad I chose this. The salad was really fresh & a huge portion. The cod was absolutely beautiful. All our meals were excellent. Service was also excellent. The restaurant was spotless including the toilets. We will definitely be back. Thank you

Very friendly service and great food. Had chips and mushy peas sandwich, proper thick bread, well buttered. Old school. Family had fish and chips and loved them. All downed with a pint of lager. Going to the toilets, it was like time travel to the 70s, but in a good way. Fancy decor and toilet holders. We'd never noticed it before with the other chippies more prominent, but we needed somewhere dog friendly, and it certainly is!

We have just to the restaurant, and were very impressed, very friendly Owner/manager and very friendly staff. Food was very nice too.

We really liked this friendly cafe at Matlock Bath. Great chips, a good menu for regular and vegetarian diets, and Henderson's Relish on the table. Our food came quickly, and was very enjoyable.
