Very disappointing experience today at Sunday lunch. Met by a rude male member of staff (possibly the owner which is even more disappointing). We were Told you couldn’t book a table (we arrived to see two tables with reserved signs on). Went to order 3 x beef Sunday roast - was told we had to wait for the ‘reserved’ party to have their food before we could order (they’d only just arrived) as they needed to make sure there was enough beef for their pre-order. Little confused as surely that’s why establishments get large groups to pre-order - so they KNOW how much of each food item they need??!! All felt very chaotic and Fawlty Towers-esque - we walked out without ordering, choosing to go somewhere else that valued our custom.

Last night of a long weekend break and decided to go to this pub, the food selection was very good, it was all served piping hot, the vegetables were fresh and cooked just right, the food was delicious, this is the best pub meal we have had in ages, and at a very reasonable price.

This pub is an absolute hidden gem! This is exactly what a countryside pub should be - welcoming, with friendly staff, and a homely feel. The food was so cheap for the quantity and quality and I wish there were more like this. Although the menu is smaller than most places - I consider this to be a good thing as you know it is all made fresh. There is a good selection of children's food, specials, and deserts too. It was comfortable and clean, with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating - it is a shame the weather wasn't better as the garden is so well kept. I'd 100% recommend the chocolate cake - genuinely gutted I won't be able to find it's equal for a long time!

The worst Sunday lunch ever!! Tasteless… , roast potatoes so crispy you couldn’t get a fork in them and when you tried to eat them it’s was like crunching on crackling. Gravy granules still in granule form, again tasteless and whishy washy. Beef was grey and lacking any flavour…. Even the children’s nuggets and chips were poor!! This was my cousin’s favourite local pub where I learnt he enjoyed very much in particular their curry. My first visit with his family and friends there set in beautiful countryside and inside cosy pub surroundings we were served quality food by great staff. The young lad serving dinner (I had home-made chicken pie) and later coffees and teas was clearly dedicated to making our visit perfect. I had a couple of their real ales and they certainly serve a good well kept pint . Thank you. I second my cousin’s choice and hope to be back one day.

Lovely quaint country pub, had a Sunday dinner which was good but a bit lacking in what you got with veg and also maybe just personal preference but I like my roast veg roasted for a while to get the sweetness rather than tasting full carrot and parnip flavours. They were lovely but just not cooked how I would have liked them and I know you can't please everyone but I'm just sharing my personal opinion on the roasts. The staff couldn't do enough for us and the whole experience was great and I'd definitely go back. For me on a Sunday dinner if they just made a tasty mash which I'm sure they could and a few more greens it would definitely be a 5 star

We had an evening meal here. The food was average. The food was bland, portions were small and the price was large. On 3 occasions I was asked how our food was and the 3 responses I got was "sorry about that". It just goes to show that they were just giving lip service to my feedback. The service at the bar for drinks from the young girl lacked in attention as she forgot to give me my drink after I had paid for it. I had to wait patiently before I eventually got her attention to rectify the mistake. After my forgettable experience at this Public House I will not be returning.

We have been eating at Stones for years, in fact we used to eat at that same restaurant even before it was Stones. We came away this weekend quite surprised and disappointed. We wondered if it was just us, but we can see other recent reviewers feel the same way. We have had the taster menu many times but this weekend we opted for the three course dinner menu. The food was, as always, presented well and delicious, but Chef seems to have lost all perspective between the size of a standard course and a taster course. The pork main dish was one very small medallion of pork, not much bigger than a bottle top and a 1” cube of belly pork, half a roasted carrot and a small spoon of mashed potato. The beef fillet, with a £4 supplement was two small strips of beef, about a quarter of a small fillet steak - in fact the £4 supplement would have easily covered the cost of the steak served. The set cream dessert, a small teaspoon quenelle of set cream, a miniature scoop of ice cream and a piece of shortbread smaller than the pork medallion if that were possible. Two ladies on the next table were having the taster menu and their set cream dessert was served at the same time. In retrospect I’m sure the one served at our table must have been plated at the same time, it’s difficult to see how it could have been served any smaller as a taster course. If we are noticing the change then other regular, loyal customers must be noticing too. Our memories aren’t incorrect either, previous pictures on this site show substantially larger portions. In fact the restaurant advertising picture shows double the amount of beef than was served this weekend. Stones has always been our ‘go to’ restaurant for a special evening out, it would be such a shame if after all these years we are forced to consider pastures new.

Having first visited in May we decided to have lunch again as a family when I was in the area in October. We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn’t overly busy so nice and quiet to chat. Two of us picked the lasagne with a side of onion rings to share and the other meal was again the Hunter’s chicken. There was a bit of a wait for the meals to arrive but nobody minds waiting for freshly cooked food. Second time around and we were not disappointed as the high standards we enjoyed on our first visit were on display again. Piping hot, well presented and tasty lunches were thoroughly enjoyed but all three of us and the onion rings were excellent too. Clean plates all round and washed down with a nice pint and a lemon and lime. Walk off your lunch at Carsington which is just down the road! Really enjoyed our lunch so well done to all involved.
