Have lived near to The Fleece for 9 years, but after a bad experience all those years ago, have never been back. My son and family were visiting us for Mother’s Day, and wanted to eat somewhere local so decided to try it again. The food was amazing, We had starters of Prawn Cocktail and Pate and all delicious. The carvery had roast pork, turkey and beef, all were lovely, tender and moist. The choice of vegetables was very extensive, and all perfectly cooked, brilliant for me as on a diet and not wanting to be tempted by the Yorkshire Puddding and roast potatoes. The Landlady and waitress were very friendly and the service very good. Will definitely be using our “local” restaurant again soon

We had a gift experience for a gastropub and decided to book this. I expect three things for a gastropub: good pub, good service and ambiance. This has the first two in plenty. We had the five course taster menu and thoroughly recommend it. There is plenty of choice and the quality of both food and presentation is excellent. We did not leave hungary. The service was very friendly and the staff could not do enough for you. We were made to feel very welcome. What lets it down is the ambience. It is disappointing when you arrive. We choose to have the food in the bar and while they tried to make it attractive, at the end of the day it is a pub bar. We still felt this was better than the restaurant which was unloved. Knowing what we know we would return for the food and the service and hope some money is spent to improve the ambience.

We were given a gift voucher for a meal from Gift Ideas for Two, so booked the tasting menu at The Drovers because we were on holiday in the area, we were made very welcome, the menu choice was extensive, the portions were not too big, which made the whole meal enjoyable, beautifully cooked food, a very enjoyable evening. All credit to the chef who works alone.

The Drovers Rest is the restaurant at the rear of The Fleece Inn. We arrived early for our booking and were greeted a wonderful lady who not only worked the bar but served in the restaurant as well. Even the locals gave us a friendly welcome and the ambiance was cosy and welcoming. The chef works single handedly and cooks everything from scratch. We chose the Taster Menu and selected two starters, two fish course, three mains and there were seven desserts! There was another couple in who chose the same amount of dishes but obviously different ones to us. They were all cooked to perfection and as expected each one was small but we were stuffed by the end of it. Thank you for a great evening which really made our weekend away complete. I would recommend you to everyone.

We are here as a gift with a gourmet pub voucher but will definitely be back. We ate from the taster menu which has the added value of offering choices at each course. We had two starters, sorbet, two fish, three meat and then a finale of no more than six sweets. I could not fault a single thing and would happily reorder every course. The stand outs for mr were the king prawns in garlic and chilli, the lamb and feta tart and the ginger sponge with Crabbies sauce was to die for. Add to this the excellent service from the landlady and the friendly locals make this a must do. Again thanks to the landlady and the chef who make this a must do venue.

We went here on a 'Gift ideas for two'' voucher (strange scheme, but that is another story) which gives you the 'tasting menu', a selection of their normal menu for £60 - though the pub only gets £49. I suspect the only takers of the tasting menu are people using vouchers, and to be honest we would have preferred just to have a proper starter and a main course each of our choice. So we had 9 mini meals plus 6 mini desserts - all were good, and our favourites were the crab fishcakes - bursting with flavour. The voucher did not cover drinks cost, we had a nice bottle of red wine for only £11.50 - excellent value! The restaurant is a converted bar, and lacks atmosphere, especially as there was only one other couple in all night - also on a voucher tasting menu. You would have more fun eating in the bar area, which seemed to have a lively atmosphere with a darts match going on. Service was good all night. The voucher scheme and the tasting menu may give the impression of a 'fine dining' establishment, but in reality this is a country pub with good pub food and if you are paying for it yourself at very reasonable prices.

The three of us eat here last week on our way from London to Scarborough. The fact that the place was almost deserted when we got there should have been a warning. The lady running the place was wonderful - I can't fault that but the food!.I had a Ploughman's lunch which was fine with plenty to eat but then you would have to try very hard to spoil natural ingredients. My wife and son had some sort of steak pie - a steak with a pastry covering it. Apparently the meat was not very nice or well cooked and the accompanying vegetables and chips were greasy and not very nice. They couldn't finish it. I should have complained but didn't as the lady didn't seem particularly interested.Stop here if you absolutely have to but I would advise giving it a miss to be honest.

This was our meal of the day on our way to Pickering Nth. Yorks. with our Granddaughter. When we walked in at 4.30pm, prebooked - the carvery was available until 6pm - the place was deserted. Not a good sign I thought. Clearly all food had been out for some time and the vegetables had suffered greatly from being kept warm. There was a rather large bowl of Yorkshire Puddings all of which were stone cold, 'they don't have anywhere to keep them warm'. They did however, offer to warm them but as they were quite well done anyway my wife declined the offer. On the up side the meats were very nice even though they had been under hot lamps probably since 12 noon, and the service was reasonable. I wouldn't recommend it.

My husband I called to sample the food here prior to a large family gathering in the village in May. The staff were very peasant and welcoming. My husbands starter of garlic mushrooms were in a watery sauce and rather tasteless. The Sunday carvery was terrible. A choice of 4 meats and between us we had 3 of them but left most of it, fatty and grisly. My husbands comment was he would not feed this to the dog !! The roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were burnt. Some of the veg we did not even recognise. The gravy was nice !!!! To top it all we were charged again on the bill for a round of drinks we had already paid for at the bar. An honest mistake but it should not have happened. Needless to say we are now looking for another place for our party in May.

Despite one or two iffy comments left on Trip Advisor my wife and I decided to try the Drovers as we thought a nice drive in the Yorkshire countryside and meal at the end of it would be just the ticket. We had the Taster Menu a gift from my daughter and her husband and I have to say as far as we were concerned it was very good. We started with confit of duck and the mozzarella wrapped in roasted parmma ham. Both were excellent. We then moved onto the fish course, curried prawn and scallops in mornay sauce with lovely bread to mop up the delicious sauces. The mains, slow roasted belly pork, chicken breast with chorizo and finally wild duck breast were accompanied by a selection of fresh veg. Once again in my opinion it couldn't be faulted. All this was followed by a collection of deserts that finished off a lovely eating experience. The service was excellent and the waitress Jenny was very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in what we thought of the food. Although its not on our doorstep we will be having another trip to the Drovers before the year is out to sample more of the menu.

We met with friends here on Wednesday, early evening, and we decided to try Chef's recommendation of 'Stone Bass'... and we were not disappointed! Beautifully presented with a delicious mix of olives, garlic, cherry tomatoes and cherry chillies - the taste of the fish still won through. It's definitely a fish we will seek out in future. Our choice of a serving of impeccably cooked rice (every grain separate) with a side salad both complemented the dish perfectly. And I just managed a very generous portion of Hot Chocolate Fudge cake & cream to finish. Our friends fancied the whole tail scampi in beer batter (and it was genuine scampi) and were equally happy with their choice. There was a steady stream of people enjoying the Wednesday special (2 Steaks for £15) and we would certainly recommend to others.

Visited with my family after hearing good things while staying on holiday nearby. I have to say the staff were very friendly and the service was speedy. However, the food was abysmal. It has to be one of the worst meals I've ever paid for. Presentation was sadly lacking, the vegetable accompaniment to the meal looked like a load of leftovers chucked in a bowl together and reheated. I begrudged paying at the end of a meal I hardly ate. Needless didn't stay for dessert and won't be going back.

A group of us went on the Travel Zoo offer which was for the Taster menu. First impressions when we walked into the restaurant was this is an old pub room with a dirty fish tank, a dying fish at the bottom of the tank and mix match of tables. I tried to forget this and let the food do the talking. Ordered off the menu which to be honest I thought was a good idea, as we could try different dishes. The starter came which was ok, then the fish course which included a rubbery Cat fish with a funny taste, this was inedible. The main course then followed with Belly Pork and Chicken which was OK, the Venison which was very sinewy and un-edible. The Assiette of Deserts was not great, I even think they forgot to put sugar in the crumble, but the moose was very nice. The staff were not great, they just served you and were very slow at getting drinks, no excuse when we were the only people in the restaurant on a Friday night. I don’t understand the amazing comments from others, as we did not receive anything like their experience. Personally I think an empty restaurant on a Friday night shows the real picture. I have owned restaurants and hotels before, I suggest that they keep to the simple food like steaks and other bar food, as the taster menu was a good idea, but the food was not up scratch, the venue was poor and the staff were not great.Having looked at the website I see there are no images of the restaurant, I now understand why. The images of the food had no resemblance to the food or presentation we experienced and would say it’s misleading. I don’t like making these type of reviews as its people lively hoods, but I would strongly recommend that the owners improve things quickly or unfortunately they will become another pub casualty.

Ended up booking a meal here after a travelzoo voucher issue left me with a small credit note. Booked the tasting menu through travelzoo and at £29 wasn't expecting much. How wrong can you be. The Friday dinnertime very quiet, only my wife and myself in, we were greeted immediately and given details of the tasting menu.A choice of starters, fish courses and mains. What a great selection, it all sounded very tasty and choosing wasn't easy. Even at this point I was expecting pre prepared bought in stuff but what a pleasant surprise when after a bit of a wait out came the starters, piping hot and freshly made. What then followed was a great two hour event with course after of course of delicious food. All freshly made and certainly worthy of a more premium price point.A assiette of six deserts followed, each one of which would have been nice on its own.Rounded of with a great cup of freshly ground coffee.Overall, one word excellent. Its not exactly on the doorstep but it is for me worth making a detour for.

We found this place by accident and have been regular visitors since. We make a 30 minute car drive to get there instead of going to the local Carvery because the food is top notch. The chef goes to great lengths to make the food as tasty as possible. Everything has that home cooked taste that you just don't get in chain pubs.My mother is vegetarian, so my wife phoned through and spoke to the chef. He offered several choices and made the dish to order. When my mother tasted the food she was delighted. For the rest of us there was plenty of meat on our plates and it was locally sourced. We have taken several people on numerous occasions and all have enjoyed the food.

My partner and I visited here with a Travel Zoo voucher; £30 for a Taster Menu for 2 including a drink. The Drovers is not a separate room in the pub, it is just one end of the Pub’s restaurant which has different tables in it so really you don’t feel like you’re anywhere special. As expected from reading other reviews the décor was dated and feels worn; despite that everywhere was very clean and tidy. The waitress/ bar lady was very pleasant although very overworked – they could have done with more bar staff on as she seemed to be running around a lot and had too much to do!The taster menu sounded impressive and we were excited about the food on offer. We picked two starters, two fish courses, three main courses and the assiette of deserts. After ordering we waited about 40 minutes for the starters to come and there was around a 15 minute wait between courses. This wasn’t too bad as it did give us time to digest between each course, although I can’t help but think that the time delay was the result of a chef taking on a little more than he could handle. There were so many dishes it seemed as though he hadn’t had time to really focus on any of them properly. Despite the lovely presentation of the food every dish lacked seasoning and any real flavour – the menu did not live up to our expectation and we felt incredibly disappointed. If we’d paid the full price of £60 for this I would have been devastated! The only gem in this four course dinner was the assiette of deserts which were tasty however, I find it hard to tell if they were really that good or if they were just better than we were expecting after the earlier courses. The traditional pub food that came out to other diners around us looked to be decent – I think the Fleece/ Drovers would be better suited to focusing on this kind of food rather than complicated dishes that they can’t fulfil the expectation of.

Living around 12 miles from Rillington, our first visit to The Fleece was Valentines Night. The restaurant did a special menu, three courses for £16.95.The Fleece is an unassuming pub on the A64, York to Scarborough Road. The old lounge bar has been converted into a simply furnished but comfortable restaurant. It is clear from the special offer menu boards, and Sunday carvery menu that this place is not frightened to serve good quality, great value food. Our welcome was warm, and the two ladies waiting on tables were friendly, courteous and efficient. We had already decided that the menu was so good, and so cheap, that even average would be fine. But what a surprise. A shared starter of eight different items - prawns, ribs, mozarella and parma ham parcels, garlic mushrooms, belly pork, crab cakes ....... was huge, well cooked and presented. The main courses were, well, huge! Served with plenty of fresh vegetables and the most superb chips, this was worth the money on its own.And then the pudding - another shared plate with I think six different puddings - Eton Mess, Lemon Tart, Tadcaster Sponge, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Chocolate Fudge Cake and Mousse. Already full, this just about made us burst. This place deserves support, and we will return to try their other menus. Locals should use it, and visitors must call on their way to and from the Yorkshire Coast. Very, very impressed, and happy to report a non pretentious pub that fully deserves our five star rating.

A fantastic selection of seafood which we attacked for nearly 2 hours without managing to clear it all. How they can serve that for £30 per couple is beyond me. The chef is obviously trying to keep the British fishing fleet going single handed. The resturant is spotlessly clean and cosy although a little dated but a lot more comfortable than the usual plastic theme pubs. Jennie the owner and Mike the Chef have no problem with going the extra mile which is a pleasant change fron the "everything is too much trouble" attitude we have encounted in other Malton establishments. On the recommendation of friends we chose to try a 'special seafood platter' for a late lunchtime treat and we were not disappointed. Although we were the only people eating in the pleasantly decorated & spotlessly clean restaurant at that time, that in no way spoiled the experience. We had a table by the welcoming fire & by choosing to eat at 2.30pm we were able to enjoy the company of the tropical fish; quiet background music and the undivided & attentive service of our host Jenni, and chef Mike. The food was sublime! We began the experience with stuffed chillies - they looked amazing and they lived up to their appearance with an exciting 'kick' in the final bite! Followed by sorbet to cleanse the palate - we were ready to begin the platter - and what a feast!!! We could fully appreciate why we'd had to book a week in advance...to enable chef Mike to source fresh on the day. We sat for over an hour enjoying each mouthful - the heated stand keeping everything at the right temperature. The content of the platter varies according to availability and is served simply with a choice of rice or ciabatta - such a variety of fish and seafood it is difficult to describe; but if we had to pick a favourite element from the oysters, large lobster, lobster bisque, baked whole crab, whitebait, whole plaice, bass, mussels, huge prawns etc it would have to be the perfectly cooked scallops.... They were DIVINE! When my husband mentioned that we had been looking forward to trying razor clams (which our friends had enjoyed on their visit) ... within a few minutes we had the pleasure too!!! Wonderful service and quite unexpected. The only regret ... no room for one of Mike's excellent puds....but the good news is that you can have a 'take-away' and the chocolate fudge cake .... consumed much, much later was excellent. This Seafood Platter is a special offer and not always available but if you love seafood we'd recommend you try it while it lasts! However we have chosen off the extensive menu previously and have yet to be disappointed. This is a restaurant attached to a village pub - but offering the quality of food a good restaurant in town would find hard to beat.

We were late for a taster menu voucher (5 course) and ended up having a bar meal instead. There was nobody in the "restaurant". Dead atmosphere. Awful decor and could do with a good clean and update. Meal was awful.. Obviously microwaved. Gammon and egg with grease on the plate and chewy meat. Maybe the chef had left already but we paid over £20 quid for a meal my daughter could have cooked better. The pictures on the website make this place look cosy and traditional but in reality it just looked tired old and dirty to me?! We got our money back from living social on the deal so we never returned for the taster menu. Would not go back. One of the worst meals I've had in years !

Booked midweek, we were one of two couples present throughout so zero atmosphere. Very tempted by the taster menu but put off spending two hours in an empty room, so chose off the very appetising menu. Could have chosen many of the items due to description. However the food failed to deliver, everything was there but not executed well enough, considering we were the only ones there I would expect much better standard. Dated interior and all the real ales "just run out" topped a poor evening out. Thankfully I had a 50% off voucher to use, but even then I felt like it only just warranted that cost.

We had booked a table and although the restaurant was nt busy , we were definitely happy with our Saturday night venue. We had been meaning to visit for a while and although the outside might not seem too promising, overlook this and step inside.Good friendly welcome on a very wet summer night. Nice choice of wine by the glass, menus quickly brought and then we made our choice.I struggled to narrow down my starter from Baked camembert, crab cakes to settle on giant shell on prawns in garlic corriander and chilli. Right choice - spot on! My partner had the home made soup courgette and pepper served with a ciabatta roll. Both were delicious and I was glad of the warm finger bowl and spare napkinsThen on to mains... I decided on that rare opportunity to have scampi in beer batter - delicious and perfectly fried. Homemade tartare sauce on the side, served with a side salad . My partner had gammon with all the trimmings griddled pineapple, egg mushroom tomato and perfect onion rings. We could easily have chosen salmon in a mustard and dill sauce, venison or home made fish cakes. The choice is good wholesome food . The handcut skin on chips were excellent. We also wanted to investigate the seafood special platter which is soon to make an appearance and for thet we ll be back. Check the website. We thought it was great that the chef came out to chat with us and we really enjoyed our evening. It was great value too. We ll be back and hope more people give The Drovers an opportunity to impress.

We used a voucher for a discounted 5 course taster menu. We were met by Jenny who was a perfect host. The food was gorgeous and in our opinion the right amount of time was left between courses. If we're back in the area I would certainly eat here again.

We had been treated to a voucher for a restaurant discovery set tasting menu for two and after some considerable deliberation opted for The Drovers Restaurant at The Fleece. Although it was a lengthy drive from where we live we certainly weren't disappointed! On our arrival we were made to feel very welcome by our host Jenny and then spent the next two hours thoroughly enjoying a variety of excellent dishes all of which were delicious and beautifully presented! Suffice to say that we wish we lived much closer as not only was the food great but also the prices on the menu(s) were very reasonable indeed!

Using a Christmas Gift 'Taster Experience' voucher we booked for the meal at the Fleece on route to a short holiday break in Scarborough. The arrangements were made by email and the exciting menue was displayed on their webpage. Not having been before we were slightly dismayed at the slightly 'run-down' appearance of the premises. However, don't let this put off future dinners! The taster meal(s) were enjoyed over a 2 hour period (it was well that we had been forwarned) and went down well with a very enjoyable and not 'extravegantly marked' up bottle of wine. The hostess was extreemly welcoming, attentive and friendly and the food was brilliant. We understand that plans are being made to refurbish the establishment so do not be put off! Many thanks to all concerned.

The food here is very good, although on occasion could be hotter, but thats personal choice. the menu is is extensive and the portions are not for the faint hearted, wherever possible local produce is used especially veg from their own garden. Good value for money & very pleasant staff. The place is a little dark and in need of update but i was under the impression that work was ongoing.Worth a visit.

Where to start !!!! The food was very good and a good selection even for vegetarians and children they would mix and match they seem to want you there and were willing to go the extra mile to make you feel welcome . they would let you have a starter as a main course for those who only wanted a little .they do a early bird meal discount and even sunday lunch take aways for the single or older person or those who just didnt want to cook . The staff and management were very polite and quick to help you . Even the customers in the bar spoke to you and made you feel welcome to the point of showing the young children how to play pool . We will be going back again very soon ...
