We dined early one evening after a trip to the Theatre. We were the first to arrive and warmly welcomed. Our son wanted the Bistro menu but we wanted the restaurant menu, they were more than happy to accommodate.Good selection of choices (including vegan) as well as a couple of specials. My wife had the 'special' tomato salad which was excellent a balance of flavours and a really tasty garlic dressing that was flavourful but not over powering, going on the menu in April, worth a trip back. I had the scallops again tasty and interesting to eat. For main course I had the fish of the day - John Dory served simply with a caper butter, when ingredients are this good that is all you need, simply delicious. The assiette of pork was also very good, all portions were generous. The desserts were a small selection but all very good. This is clearly a restaurant aimed at the business market and we could have felt out of place but the service was just right and we were made to feel very welcome, even with a 7 year old in tow... Ketchup, mayonnaise no problem. It is also worth noting very close to Bank and Cannon Street stations so easy to get home after. We will be back! (PS no drunk waiters in sight)

Angelo and Nicoletta were our servers for a late afternoon lunch. They were attentive without being obsequious. The wine that was recommended, a Brillo 2016 Chianti, was excellent, and the two dishes, salmon and risotto, were cooked to perfection. I would not hesitate to return to The Don when we are next in London.

Evitar evitar evitar

The food here is good and the setting nice however it is a tad annoying to have 5 different waiting staff serve you, with the same person incapable of doing more than their one thing, ie bringing you to the table, bringing you wine, taking your food order, bringing you food etc. It is also annoying that our wine was kept 10ft from us and we were not trusted to pour it ourselves (and it was assumed we wanted the same amount from the bottle). Would it kill to ask people where they would like the bottle to be left? Other than that it was good.

We visited The Don for a midweek lunch and were very pleasantly surprised to find such good quality fare at a sensible price. The food here was really good, the portions are small but it is of a high standard. The wine selection is great and has many affordable options as well as specialty wines.

The restaurant was empty when we arrived and no other customers appeared for about an hour. This caused the staff to be rather over-attentive, filling water glasses after every sip, watching for us to finish our dishes and flying out the next courses. There was also no music playing so we could be heard quite clearly across the room. Touche!

We have been going to this restaurant for nearly two decades and whilst not on a regular basis, it has always been a pleasure. Sadly this visit left much to be desired and we won’t be returning. I had the crabmeat with turnip to start, (£16) which at a push had a teaspoon of crab in it, all turnip, and totally tasteless. Not even redeemed by the mayonnaise. For main I had the pork chop which would’ve sat better sewn to the underside of a pair of brogues. My husband had the smoked salmon, fine, followed by the sirloin steak (£34) which had to be 5oz at best. I’ve never seen a sirloin SO thin! Coupled with chips at £5 and spinach at £4, that makes a very expensive £43 meagre meal. They got the order wrong with dessert, but nonetheless, what we received was lovely. All in all, very disappointing, over priced and mediocre service. Even for city prices, the wines are way overpriced. The entry level for a bottle of wine is £38, which was awful and then ordered a bottle for £50 which was acceptable. This wasn’t a fancy business dinner on expenses, just a supper with friends. Very disappointing. Shame

The Cornish crab, mushroom veloute and terrine starters were all well presented and very flavoursome. Our mains were the lamb and the steak. Both were delicious and happily devoured. I love the atmosphere and the service in this old City institution. This was my first visit for a number of years, and although it was a good experience overall the food did not fully match expectations. Our large party had a partly segregated table at the end of the restaurant and we had some tasty canapes before the lunch, which was just as well given the portion sizes that followed. The turkey Christmas lunch was quite small and a bit plainly served, although the cranberry sauce was excellent. I went for cheese course rather than Christmas pudding (our group size meant we had to take the set menu options), which was OK but nothing special. There were some good options on the wine list which I did not find outrageously priced compared to other high end City restaurants.

I went to The Don with some business colleagues and had high expectations. The location in St Swithins Lane in former port cellars is lovely, but the lunch was disappointing. The Scottish smoked salmon was simply some smoked salmon on a plate with a few condiments scattered on it, the turkey (£28) was a couple of small to medium turkey slices, 6 half sprouts, 3 roast potatoes, some cranberry sauce, stuffing and a couple of pigs in blankets. The presentation was unimaginative and for the price I would have expected something better either in quantity or presentation / trimmings and it was lukewarm. Similarly, the steak and the dover sole were presented in the plainest way one could imagine. If you are looking for very plain simple cooking, it is probably fine but personally I would expect something much better for the price. The wine list is broadly sourced and extensive but you will struggle to find a good bottle for under £40. There are much better choices of restaurant available in this locality.

Typically on expenses I'd not select somewhere like the Don. whats on offer is invisible from the street. A look at the menu suggests fine dining menu. Prices at a level with most else of a similar standard in the area. Food was great, service...

I have been a regular visitor to this restaurant for many years, and the food and staff have always been of high a quality. In the Summer the Chef changed and since then the level of cooking has dropped, the portions halved and price increased. I have had grouse in 5 restaurants around the City this Season and the price has only ranged between £26 and £29 pounds in September for a whole Grouse, in the Don the price is £36 and you get less than half the bird , on the menu it states grouse so unless it states otherwise I would expect the whole bird, also the cooking of this dish did nothing to add to the flavour of this bird. I had Skate on another occasion and it was the portion was tiny, also the fish was far from fresh and the colour was dark grey with an unpleasant odour. I have visited 5/6 times since this Chef arrived and they are probably the worse 5/6 meals I have eaten in this Restaurant over the years. I would say the rest of the staff in the Restaurant are first class, but I believe the new Chef has not lived up to all the hype written on his arrival and has taken his eye of the ball

I was recommended to come here by a friend and have visited three times. It is a good place to come with work colleagues, friends on on a date as it has a lovely atmosphere. The artwork on the walls is by late British Artist John Hoyland and it adds a splash of colour and sophistication to the feel of the place.

Quite quiet. Small portions. Had been my favourite place for a long time, but needs to be a bit snappier in my opinion.

This restaurant is tucked away down St Swithin’s Lane between Bank and Cannon Street. It has the feel of being tucked away, and there is nothing overly grand or luxurious about the venue. It is, simply put, a solid and easy choice for a business lunch. Our meal - which was lunch for three on a Monday was well cooked, and flavoursome. The restaurant was quiet - and not buzzy at all, but it was a Monday. The only minor complaint was that service was a little slow.

Good food, friendly and efficient service, nice rooms, well spaced tables. Special August 50% grouse deal excellent value ! Very well cooked and presented and succulent. We enjoyed the grouse earlier in the month and 'foodie' guests from out of town were suitably impressed. Not what they they expected in the City.
