Some refurb being done, so probably not the best time for a first time visit. Lovely old and historic pub in a great location, but lunchtime food was average with several dishes not available. Good choice of cask ales and dog friendly so two positives. Enough about it for us to give it another go on our next visit to Portsmouth!

Lovely old historic pub situated across the road from Portsmouth Cathedral, so great location. Large outside courtyard, distinct food seating area adjacent to more traditional bar area. Dog friendly in bar area and courtyard. Unfortunately when we were there ongoing refurbishment was underway, mostly external, but still a fair bit of related noise. Food was OK. Pie of the day with seasonal greens wasn't piping hot and seasonal greens turned out to just be peas! Other dish ordered was from the specials, ragu bolognese pasta bake, and again was OK, acceptable for the price but not exceptional. Good selection of beers with 3 cask beers, although service felt a little bit brusque. Just enough there to revisit some time in the future to see how it looks and feels after refurbishment!

Had a good dinner here (off the specials board). Staff were good ( 4 stars fot that). But at over £6 a pint (most expensive beer Ive bought in Portsmouth in 3 days- £2 more in some cases) Im not convinced this is really a pub to spend an evening in. If youre here for dinner then youll be fine and I couldnt fault it. Pubwise youll find a cheaper local with a welcome 100 yds way just for a drink

Delicious traditional British food. When you tire of the chain restaurants in Gunwharf Quays; come and fill your belly with some wholesome grub. My food was served piping hot, and I enjoyed every bite. The young lady waiting on my table was polite and attentive. The atmosphere is homely.

Love this pub. Absolutely steeped in history (including association with Lord Nelson) & a real landmark for anyone who's grown up in Portsmouth It's latest incarnation feels a little removed from it's previous intimate & cosy atmosphere (I guess all things change) however it's still a delightful & charming pub

I really don't understand why you close early the place was the busiest I have seen it on a Sunday its Christmas people are using the pubs and your staff ensure they tell everyone that by the way we shut at 7pm whilst its 3 deep at the bar, so people move on, they seem to get annoyed when its busy, then 3 taxis turn up with people in at 18:40 after the bell had been called and last orders declared and you instantly tell them we have called last orders so 12 people leave without ordering, it is crazy that you close a pub when it's busy I understand you closing at 7pm on a Sunday normally but it is busy take the money remember you have January and February coming up which are quiet months for the industry. I really suggest that you start getting your staff to remember that if its busy stay open and if people turn up don't turn them away at least sell them a drink especially when the bar is still open. I really hope the owners address this issue otherwise you risk losing business all together. I am from the industry and have been for years and this is no way to treat people or run a business your staff need to stop running the pub to suit their social life, previously I heard them discussing going out into gunwarf before it shuts and shut the pub on a Friday at 9pm turning people away at 10 to 9 as they had called last orders, and telling everyone arriving at 8pm we are closing at 9pm, why would you do that just at least try and serve people drinks, please sort this out before you ruin this business!!!! By the way I was leaving anyway so this is an observation and it did not elaffect me personally.

We arrived and our table was ready for us. We then waited approx 20 minutes for our drinks order to be taken, when the restaurant was not busy in the slightest. We then waited another 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive. Still waiting for our food order to be taken. The food come out approximately 30 mins later, we were all shocked at the amount of food we didn’t get for the price. I’m giving the food rating a 1 for the amount of potatoes I got in my “roast dinner”. We got a minimal amount of veg, no stuffing EACH, one cob of cauliflower with the “cauliflower cheese”, 1 potato each. We then requested for stuffing for everyone and extra vegetables which the waitress said she will bring out. We were waiting patiently for these, and another table complained about potatoes to which they received this immediately and by the time we finished our meal they still hadn’t bought the stuffing and extra veg out. To which when asked again they said I can bring it out now, once we had finished. Upon discussing our concerns with the manager, he responded with “oh really” followed with a vacant stare. He then proceeded to offer 10% off despite all of the table not being happy with the meal we paid for. He then upped it to 20%, and offered us a drink on the house to which he then stated we won’t get the 20% off. All of our party was extremely dissapointed in not only the food, but the service we also received. We shall not be coming here again.

This used to be a lovely old pub of old portsmouth & it's changed hands a few times over the last few years, but there are always dirty glasses on the side of the bar & empties left on the tables, uncleaned. Dirty tables, & this is sad to see for a historical pub. It gives off the vibe that it's cheap & dirty. Staff seem lazy. Something needs to be done to turn it around. Or you will not change the minds of any of the locals.

I recently visited The Dolphin for my wife's birthday after a good friend of mine recommended it. I had heard that it had undergone a refurbishment and change of management. As one of the oldest pubs in Portsmouth, I was intrigued to see what it was like now, considering its interesting reputation in the past. I am very pleased to say that I had a lovely time and my family thoroughly enjoyed it. The pub now caters to families, is dog-friendly, and the staff were excellent, going above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable. They even brought out the cake I had brought for my wife and sang happy birthday to her. The menu was impressive, offering typical Sunday roast options as well as traditional seaside meals like fish and chips, along with a great selection of burgers. The kids loved their meals, and even my 6-month-old daughter seemed content in her highchair, taking in the good atmosphere. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a Sunday lunch to visit The Dolphin and enjoy all the benefits it has to offer.

We were recommended this place, but will say it wasn’t as great as we thought it would have been. Cauliflower starter was nice but cauliflower was overcooked before it had its coating on, so it was quite mushy. Steak and Ale Pie, pastry thick and dry with hardly any filling. When we mentioned this to staff, they were not experienced to deal with complaints, One dark haired lady got the hump, and could hardly face me, & said she would speak to her supervisor, the supervisor came out & seemed surprised when I said I was not paying for my main as both my meals were not up to standard & my husband had to eat his meal alone whilst my 2nd meal was being prepared. The cook/kp came out of the kitchen to see who was complaining about his food, but did not comment. Expected better, left very disappointed.

Service is great and welcoming. Rooms are quite small along with the bathrooms not recommemded if you are disabled. Good lounge with a relaxing bar. Close to portsmouth centre but not much to do around there are a few bars but restaurants are about 20 plus minutes to walk to. Recommend you stay near southsea if you want more stuff to do and be closer to restaurants.
