We stayed overnight at the Dolaucothi Arms after going to the National Trust Roman Gold Mine. Estelle provided us with a lovely cold meat and cheese platter for our supper that was superb. We had an enormous cooked breakfast the following morning. I had a wonderful gluten-free meal. There were even two toasters, one just for toasting gluten/free bread. I have never stayed at a place so gluten free friendly. What made it so special was that after breakfast we were treated to an impromptu 1-2-1 tour around the birds of prey. We have never felt more welcome and wished we could have stayed there longer.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The choice of food on the menu was great, without being too much choice. The dining area was lovely, warm and the bar was interesting with a lot of popular beers and wines to choose from. The Sunday roast was delicious, plenty of vegetables all perfectly cooked and a good selection served. I had the beef, which was not served pink, however the meat was really tender and slow cooked, delicious. One of the best roasts I have had in a long while. A lucky find on a long drive home, I’ll plan my travel around another visit to enjoy a meal here again. No photos this time, battery had completely died on my phone 🤦🏼‍♀️

We visited on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday, in a family party of 14 with plenty of children! The food was absolutely beautiful, plentiful and lovingly cooked. We had enormous Sunday roasts with giant Yorkshires, and the puddings were delicious. Food arrived on time, with children’s served first which was a great thoughtful touch. Service was great, this is a traditional and comfortable family place loved by locals and visitors alike. There are craft ales on tap and a great beer garden outside for sunny days, where you can also visit the rabbits and chickens. Definitely book in advance, and come hungry!

We visited on a Saturday evening. We had booked well in advance as there were eight of us. We arrived on time at 7pm and were shown to our table without issue. However, my husband was directed to the bar to get the drinks rather than table service. We were in the dining room and no one else was in there. The lady was pleasant and brought the specials board and menus to the tables pretty quickly. The younger man came and took our order fairly quickly too. So far so good. Then the fire alarm went off. No real issue, the female chef and the younger man came through the dining room and turned it off. Whilst walking back to the kitchen, the chef muttered something about it being due to the heat sensor above the grill. After a further half an hour and another fire alarm the starters arrived. They were okay. Nothing exciting or amazing, just okay and certainly not worth a half hour wait. We then waited for a further hour and a half for the mains to arrive. During this time the fire alarm went off again. We were never visited by any staff to update us on why the food was taking so long and felt we’d been left in the dining room. Two people didn’t have starters and were absolutely starving by 9:15 when the food started to arrive. We were all pretty fed up by this point too. We had to order further drinks from the bar as no one came to serve us or even check we were okay in all that time. When the food arrived bits were missing from three of the eight meals. My son ordered the pasta and by the time his garlic bread arrived he’d finished his dinner. He is ten and asked for an adults meal and it was very small. He was still hungry when he’d finished. My daughters meal didn’t arrive until we were all nearly finished. I asked for my steak to be medium and it was so overcooked it was dry and grey. I would have told the staff if they had come back to ask how the meal was but they didn’t. I couldn’t see the point in going looking for the staff to get a new steak cooked as it had taken two hours from ordering to bring that one. I had to leave half my steak as it was inedible, which I’ve never done before. Everyone else said their food was okay but nothing special and nowhere near what you’d expect after a 2 hour wait. About 20 minutes after we had finished the female chef appeared. I told her of the unacceptable wait time and my awful steak and the other issues. She said this was not normal and blamed the fire alarm as she’d had to reset the grill each time adding to the delay. She said she’s explained this and the extended food wait time to us when she came through to turn off the alarm each time which is completely untrue. No one explained anything to us about the long wait or even acknowledged it until I raised it. The chef didn’t seem too bothered about my awful steak and told me how busy she was and what an awful day she’d had. She didn’t take any responsibility for the issues and just made excuses which I then felt was becoming an argument with her which I didn’t want to have. The customer service was poor so I gave up raising the issues any further and just asked for the issues I’d raised to be reflected in the bill. They took a bottle of wine off the bill which in all fairness we only had due to the long wait. It still took half an hour to bring the bill and for us to pay. Some of us still had room for a pudding but were so fed up we decided just to pay and have pudding at our holiday cottage. We are staying nearby for a further week but will not be going back here. We have been in Wales for 10 days now and eaten out most days. We’ve had some amazing meals in some fantastic places with the friendliest staff. This was by far the worst service I have had in a very very long time. Seven out of the eight meals were just okay but my steak was awful.

I vowed I would never go here again after a previous hideous experience - immense wait for food to be served, lack of staff, ghastly but expensive food. But as that had been a couple of years ago we decided to try it again. Sadly, the place is still quite scruffy, and service was still terrible. The barman, who probably needed some support, was so slow and lifeless, I thought he was perhaps unwell. The woman I think is the owner did take our order quite promptly and the wait was acceptable as a large party had arrived just before us. However she looked untidy and harassed and sullen. The food was OK but over-priced. It is a great shame that the two workers we met were miserable looking and offered no welcome. Both need training in customer service and how to smile.

My partner and I took my mother to Lunch at the Dolaucothi Hotel at the beginning of the year. The bar and WCs were filthy. The beer and wine was foul. We waited 40 minutes for starters that were very poorly prepared. After over an hour waiting for main courses I decided that enough was enough, paid for the terrible drinks and food that had been provided and left. My advice to both locals and visitors is to avoid this establishment in any circumstances. There are plenty of other good Country pubs in the vicinity. We were regular customers under the previous Landlords who ran the pub following its refurbishment. It had excellent food and service. It appears that the owners (the National Trust) care only about rental income being maximised, with no thought to the fact that the tenant has no idea how to run a pub. For the record my maternal Great-Grandmother was Landlady of the Dolaucothi Hotel in the 1930s. My Great-Grandparents both died in the building. I have some sentimental attachment to it and am one of many who want this place to succeed. The National Trust should have a duty to ensure this type of business is well run. At present it is dreadful and has a negative effect on the many excellent pubs we have in this part of Wales.

I wish I could say otherwise given the current struggles but you can't expect to have regular local customers if you keep them waiting for ages, don't check to see if they need anything (especially as they're not meant to get up to look for you) and eventually serve them food that isn't what it says on the menu, and brings on nausea and I pray nothing worse, but I can't stop thinking about whether the meat had been defrosted thoroughly before cooking....

We aren't local to the area but were staying not far away for the week to celebrate my mum's 70th birthday. Dad booked a table here after reading rave reviews and stories of awards. I'm thinking we must have turned up on an off day as our experience doesn't reflect most of the other reviews here. Staff were sparse and mostly unhelpful. Not one of them wished my mum a happy birthday (despite her wearing a couple of classy '70 today' badges). Not essential but it would have been nice. Our waitress was pleasant but unknowledgeable about what the specials were or what the soup of the day was. Nobody told us that they were short staffed that day and food was hugely delayed because of that. It just would have been nice to have been told. From sitting down to having our food was an hour and a half - which for what we ordered seemed a bit absurd. The food when it arrived was lovely. The best chips I've ever had. It's just a shame that we were so hungry and underwhelmed at that point that we pretty much just ate it, got the bill and left. As we left, my boyfriend and daughter were looking at the animals and the chef happened to be there, getting some fresh air. She apologised for how long the food had taken - which was nice of her. It was just a shame her bosses hadn't thought to do the same while we were waiting and waiting ...... and waiting.

Food is still excellent but the new team have a lot to learn re: organisation. We've been twice recently, 1st time the drinks order was wrong, 2nd time the food order was wrong. This visit was particularly disorganised, 2 courses took an hour and a half to arrive. Other tables were waiting just as long. Staff seemed busy but without direction. By the time we left the bar was almost completely covered by empty glasses, some of which had been there as long as us! Went for lunch today (Wednesday not busy). Ordered from the menu which hasn't changed since the last (very good) tenants moved on. 3 burgers, gammon and chips, and 2 baguettes. Took nearly an hour to arrive, only two other parties eating, sandwiches in the main. Inquired as to how much longer it might take, to be told, everything is made from scratch!! Well, I don't know how long it takes most people to form a couple of burgers and grill them, whilst getting the gammon on the go, but nearly an hour is a touch much. Also very poor when it arrived, the burgers were extremely dry and unappetising and the sausage baguette was just that, a sausage in a bun, no attempt at finesse unless you call the 70's style garnish finesse!! Such a disappointment, the previous tenants worked hard to build up a reputation of good wholesome food which will give the new tenants 12 months good grace before people catch on. Very poor show.

having had several very good to outstanding meals in this lovely place in beautiful surroundings in the past under previous management, today's experience was amongst the worst for a long time as far as eating out goes.Unwelcoming atmosphere, rude and unhelpful staff, mediocre, small and overpriced servings, with starter arriving 20 minutes after ordering, put on table without a word or smile.. restaurant did not appear particularly busy, one other table waiting for food inside, two outside...Having eaten starter (small toasted cheese and ale rarebit, with three and a half salad leaves on side,£4.50)and plate had been cleared away,we waited another hour-with no mains in sight.. Being extremely hungry by now,we were considering cancelling the order and eating elsewhere,to be told by staff if we did so,we would not be welcome again.not once, but twice, since she went off to the kitchen, possibly to confer, and then came out to tell us again..Cutlery was put in jumbled pile of knives and forks on top of three napkins, left to us to sort out and distribute,followed-eventually-by mains.By this time,(an hour and a half after placing order),none of us felt very much like staying. To further add to the unpleasantness,we were also told should we consider leaving without paying, they would find ways of getting their money-(this was whilst standing at the bar with intention to pay)-whether we left the food behind or not...Trying to break the tense and unpleasant atmosphere,I asked the bar lady (who I'd noticed had been constantly sniffling and wiping her nose,in between serving food and drinks),whether she suffered from hayfever, and was told 'no,it's flu,had it for weeks,it just doesn't go away'...feeling extremely uncomfortable and quite upset, one of us had left both dinner and table by now,The offer to pack food as a take away was made, following which two meals appeared, packed in cardboard container and plastic takeaway box (with broken lid) respectively, and carried outside, where all of us had retreated to by now-third meal staying on plate on table, cooling rapidly ...eventually retrieved by us.. The Dolaucothi Arms used to be a wonderful place to meet, eat, drink, and take friends and family to-but unless what we experienced in terms of service, food, value and atmosphere was down to a one-off 'off' day all round,we doubt whether it will remain so-and we have no wish to return to find out either..

Our guide book claimed this to be a "truly excellent pub" and so we went out of our way to have dinner here during our recent stay in Wales. The atmosphere was warm and the staff pleasant, but it was to food which was surprisingly the real disappointment given the glowing ratings I had seen. I had the lamb shank "special", a bone with a pittance of foul-tasting leathery meat which was served with a side of plastic-like potatoes. My wife, who is vegetarian, had the chili which was edible, but which came with bland rice and a handful of tortilla chips drizzled with orange cheese. I would have sent the shank back, but looking at the other plates on the table, I had little hope of being able to get something better. This was easily the worst meal I had on our ten-day trip to the UK. While I almost never post reviews online, this experience demands it.

We visited this pub last night for the first time, the welcome was extremely friendly despite our small party being 15 minutes late - food was really excellent as was the service. The whole pub and bar was warm and clean. The place had a really good buzz, everyone enjoying themselves. It was really heartening to see a country pub so busy on a Tuesday evening in November. We run a local tourist attraction and will definitely be recommending this place to our visitors! Easy to find - right on the main road with a large car park

Seen sign outside that said open till 11pm.I turned in and went in for an ale at 9.45pm the place was quiet and I was served by a female with no welcome but medium friendlyness. She finished her shift and a male took over the bar. I asked for another ale at 10.15 and he said "no were closing" I finished up and left and told him to correct his blackboard outside. If you're going along this route you will get better service at the Falcondale in Lampeter. Stay away and spend your money where it's appreciated. I had visions of bringing my family for an important anniversary in the summer. Not in this lifetime NO SERVICE HERE TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT APPROACH.

The food was not up to par! the chicken curry had poor flavour and the chicken cooked dry, with the poppadums over cooked and greasy, lasagne had no seasoning, and the steak was well cooked rare but ice cold inside and the chips greasy, This is not typical and the owner took on the commence and past them on to the chef, but this chef seams to have a problem with seasoning food. please sort it out. then we can eat there with confidence instead of hit and miss.

I visited The Dolaucothi Arms, Pumsaint, with Ford Gron / Round Table and Clwb 41 / 41 Club from Llanbedr Pont Steffan / Lampeter . We enjoyed a delicious evening meal followed by a presentation on the work of the charity, Ty Hafan, from Shelley Kirkham, Regional Fundraising Manager covering West Wales. We had exclusive use of their function room for the evening, offering comfortable surroundings with the room laid out so that we could all hear and see our guest speaker. She shared with us her passion and work at Ty Hafan and how thankful the charity are for all the support and fundraising efforts undertaken to further their important work. We enjoyed a pre-booked 3 course meal and our starter of succulent parma ham on a bed of various lettuce and avacado was a healthy start! Our main course was a home-made chicken pie with creamy mash potatoes, garden peas and gravy - tasty and filling! Finally, we had a mouthwatering syrup sponge in a rich syrup sauce with fresh cream to end a faultless meal. I enjoyed a fruity red wine with my main course and the pints of Sunshine, a golden ale brewed by Monty's Brewery from Powys also went very well with my meal. The service from the friendly and attentive staff was excellent as expected and it was a very good choice of venue for our September dinner meeting. A hired mini bus enabled many of us to enjoy a few drinks from their wide range of ales, beers and whiskies - I noticed that they also serve a good choice of non-alcoholic drinks! Thank you / diolch yn fawr to Shelley Kirkham for sharing with us the wonderful work at Ty Hafan and to all at The Dolaucothi for the warm welcome, efficient service and delicious food.

Shame about the weather being cold and windy but the staff made a big fuss of the dogs as they served us. Very pleasant meal and we then put 4 of the dogs back in the car and went into the bar with the other one for coffee. Again he had lots of fuss (and a roast potato!!!).Very welcoming, very friendly, good food

An interesting pub which serves good food and an excellent pint for the passing traveller. The menu whilst limited is well thought out and varied, allowing for daily changes according to the seasons and availability. Our starters of a curried soup and home made bread and welsh butter were excellent. The mains consisting of monkfish scampi and a little green dressed salad was superb, the other being gammon egg and chips - again full of flavour. Ice cream and coffee followed to complete a smashing meal. The quality and depth of flavour in both the coffee and the ice cream was certainly a talking point on our travel home. The total cost for two lunches was £42 (£7.50 inc drinks and coffee) I think this visit offered excellent value for the money spent.

The TripAdvisor reviews suggested that this was a good place and it looked smart from outside so we decided to go for our lunch. It is a village pub which serves food and I believe has accommodation. The welcome was warm and informal. We ordered from a mixture of the specials board and the lunch menu. The food was excellent. Tasty, cooked from fresh and not expensive. The beer was a low-ish ABV real ale and well-kept. The place is split into a series of rooms which makes it more cosy. We spent a couple of hours eating and chatting in an excellent place.

The Dolaucothi Arms, located in the village of Pumsaint, offers freshly prepared mouthwatering meals in comfortable and cosy surroundings. I visited with Lampeter Round Table and Lampeter 41 Club for an evening meal followed by a quiz. My starter of Welsh rarebit with Dave's famous piccalilli was delicious. The succulent slow roast pork belly with lentils served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables was my main course. To finish, I had the scrumptious stout chocolate sponge with plum sauce and creme fraiche. It was an excellent meal as was the service from the friendly staff. Our one night stay at this National Trust owned inn last week was very enjoyable. The staff were friendly & made us welcome. Our room was very comfortable & clean & overlooked a large well kept garden, one corner of which was home to 5 hens which provide some of the eggs for the breakfasts. To accompany these, delicious local sourced bacon, sausage & black pudding are on the menu too. Home made marmalade, jams & chutneys are on sale.Wednesday, the night we arrived, is PIE NIGHT & at £10 per head including a drink it was well worth it. Nearby is the Dolaucothi Gold Mine [National Trust] which is a great place to visit even in the rain!

Situated alongside the B4302 between Llandeilo and Lampeter in the little village of Llanpumsaint is the old coaching inn, The Dolaucothi Arms. This really is in the heart of Carmarthenshire and is well worth a visit. The food is really good and is obviously freshly prepared using ingredients from local suppliers. The menu is not hugely extensive but the owners have been sensible in having a balanced choice of dishes that will suit most tastes including vegetarians. The decor is simple and meals are served in the front dining room and a slightly less well appointed area to the rear of the bar. There are two menus from which to choose and it seems that you can order from either irrespective of where you are seated. Prices are most reasonable. There are outside bench tables from which (presumably) you can also eat provided the weather is suitable and there are nicely lawned areas on which the kids can play. All in all this is a real find and a place we shall visit again.

I pulled a tiny piece out of one of my food magazines just before our holiday in Wales as it mentioned places to eat in Carmarthenshire. We discovered this was ten minutes away from our holiday home, and what a fantastic find! We went for Sunday lunch on a beautiful day, after visiting the nearby gold mines, and had a delicious meal served by friendly staff and had a lovely chat with some of the local people at the same time. Inwould definitely recommend a visit even if you have to go out of your way to go. The pork was meltingly soft with a great piece of crisp crackling, served with fresh vegetables and a wonderful cauliflower cheese. Imaginitive puddings, but I had the most delicious piece of Mouldy Mabel with some apple cheese. Major plus was a surprising small bill at the end of it. Happiness.

Had read about this hotel/restaurant in Wales guidebook it was miles off the beaten track at Pumpsaint with good parking and grassed area down to the river.Spotlessly clean and pleasant and welcoming host, menu for lunch was limited choice and whilst undoubtably home cooked and at a very reasonable price was not to the standard we had expected, more like food you could get in any cafe or pub. Would not travel this far out of my way again.

The Dolaucothi Arms has a great atmosphere. We ate there mid-week and it was busy, with a great buzz. The restaraunt was full, so we sat in the " back bar "to eat. I had chicken pie and chips for dinner which was scrummy. My only complaint would have been the atrocious coffee, but I said nothing because everything else was so enjoyable I didn't want to spoil the evening. The staff are all helpful and friendly. I believe that the pub holds "pie and a pint" nights regularly, so I will be back!!
