We booked a large family meal to celebrate a birthday on a Saturday evening. We were called 45 minutes before our meal booking time to advise they had a function that evening so they had to cancel our booking. We asked if they could ring their sister restaurants to see if they could accommodate us at such short notice, to which they said no, we would have to ring around ourselves. Of course, being a Saturday evening and a large party we couldn’t find anywhere last minute to accomodate us. To cancel 45 minutes before is very poor. Cannot comment on the place/food itself as we didn’t make it that far, but I wouldn’t risk booking a celebration meal here for a large party as you could easily find yourself with no where to go and celebration plans ruined.

Booked over the phone last minute and a very helpful person got us a table for 9 people (kids and adults ) and answered all my questions. We were able to pull right up to the door for my elderly mum with mobility issues and park in the big car park. Attentive staff and tweaks to our orders were no problem. Food and drinks arrived in time and all food was not only great but value for money too. We had a lovely night and agreed that we would all return. Personally I can't wait for hotter weather and eat in the beautiful garden but my brother now back next Sunday for the roast!

We came here for Xmas dinner. The table was booked for 2pm but was changed by the pub to 230 without telling us. We sat down and didn't get our starters until gone 3pm and server at different times. I got 3 pieces of deep fried brie with a tiny offering of cranberry sauce. The other starter which was prawn cocktail consisted of 5 small prawns and a small amount of sauce with one slice of bread some buttered some not and some got a small slide of cucumber in a large plate Dinner wasn't served until around an hour later and it took 45 minutes for everyone to get their food in the worst case Mr sister in law for her dinner when we'd all finished. The dinner itself was bad. Fatty greasy beef rib with 4 small quarters of frozen potatoes the veg was cold and again came in intervals so not everyone had veg to start. The staff were bringing up the dish one plate at a time and often not fully serving tables which resulted in half server tables throughout the pub. I can't believe that the chef allowed this rubbish to be out of the kitchen. I work in the food industry and I would be embarrassed by the low quality of food that was served up. It's clear that the management and kitchen were not prepared properly for an Xmas dinner service

We went yesterday for an impromptu lunch after learning that the pub was dog friendly. We were made really welcome as was the dog. The log fire was burning brightly making the place toasty. I had the Christmas menu - turkey with all the trimmings and my husband had the ham, egg and chips. Both were served promptly and with generous portions. My turkey was succulent and tasty, the veg freshly cooked and plentiful. My husband had a huge portion of thick cut ham which he said was delicious. We were so impressed that we booked to return for their Sunday lunch.

We sat outside on the picnic benches for lunch as the weather was scorching. During our visit, the pub was having exterior renovations. This wasn't a huge issue as there weren't any building noise, but the scaffolding obviously wasn't pretty to look at. There are plenty of picnic benches outside, most with umbrellas. The pub also played music into its garden, which was a nice touch. My partner and I really enjoyed our lunches. The chunky chips were delicious! Our meals were served promptly, and all of the food was hot. Prices were good and there is lots of choice on the menu.

The pub itself appeared to be going through a refurbishment. This did not appear to affect the operating of the pub. We visited this pub on a Tuesday evening. What we didn’t know was that Tuesday was quiz night. We are not keen on quizzes. But no problem we just got takeaway meals. The first thing I ordered was unavailable. There were no steaks available. A Sizzling Pub without steak ain’t no sizzling pub in my opinion. My second choice was the Ultimate Plate. We collected our takeaway meals and headed to our hotel leaving the pub to enjoy their quiz. When we got to our hotel we opened the takeaway boxes to discover two things. The first was that there was nothing ultimate about the Ultimate Plate portion. It was the size of a supermarket ready meal. The second thing we discovered was that there were no poppadoms or mango chutney in the box. Not that I think it would make a difference as the ultimate plate was so small. Sorry folks but you fluffed this one up.

We have been disappointed on previous occasions when visiting this local pub. However, this time it has changed hands and is now owned by the Sizzling chain. The hospitality, helpfulness and friendliness of the staff was brilliant. The meal was very enjoyable. There was also time to have a drink first which we prefer before the meal came up.

Had high hopes after seeing reviews and pictures on here. Chips on all dinners were cold and were French fries not chunky chips like in pictures on here. There was half a plate of coleslaw instead of dinner. We were told the desserts of the day, considering it was only 1.30pm they had nearly ran out of the desserts that we wanted so only 2 could have it. Would rather spend the money elsewhere.

Eight of us enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch at the Dog and Partridge. There was a choice of roasts and between us we enjoyed chicken, gammon and the veggie option, a butternut squash and beetroot Wellington. The roasties were delicious; the Yorkies were huge and crisp; there was a lovely selection of fresh veg; and the gravy was good. Nice choice of old-fashioned puddings too. Service was good and the prices were decent too. Our first time eating there and we will be happy to return.

Came in to have a celebratory birthday dinner with my children as the fireworks were in the village and thought it would be nice to put the two together. When entering we were rudely welcomed by the lady behind the bar, seemed like she was angry that we had entered the pub and bothered her. When ordering our food and drink again we were made to feel that we were an inconvenience, even slammed my sons drink down on the bar. The cutlery was slammed on the table and every question was greeted with a huff. When our meal was finished the pub began to get a little busy as people were coming in from the fireworks, my son went to order our deserts and coffees, when asking for two lattes the bar tender responded ‘really l! You want coffees when I’m really busy’ 😳 my son was so taken aback that he changed his order to accommodate her… I asked the waitress who served our table, who was very nice , if it would be possible to speak to the manager and was shocked when she told us that the rude women who was serving us behind the bar was actually the manager. The only plus was that the food was delicious, compliments to the chef and the table waitress.

I’ve never been here before but was quietly impressed with the quality of the food. A typical pub menu with starters, mains, selection of burgers, baguettes and sandwiches. We had the chicken fajitas served on a hot skillet, chilli con carne and steak and kidney pudding. My pudding was packed with meat and the hand cut chips were spot on. The other two meals looked good and no complaints from those eating them! All food made fresh in the pub and very reasonably priced. My only complaint would have been the place needs refurbishment but has character.

Eventually all were served course no 2. Course no 3 which just didn’t happen. We waited so long everyone cancelled. This whole prices took a litre shirt of 2 hours. Onto the food most of it was poorly presented and badly cooked I myself along with 2 others chose salmon which was dry and inedible. I have visited this pub many times to eat with family and the service and food has always been great. Not sure what’s happened since but the service, food and hygiene has well and truly dropped. We arrived just after 12.15 for lunch mid week as a birthday treat for my sister in law as we knew she’d love the food they served here. We arrived to be told that there had not been a local delivery of foods so around 4 of the mains were off menu, ok we thought can’t be helped and ordered something we could have. Whilst waiting we looked at the cutlery and it was disgusting, had food residue left on 2 of the forks and a knife and just looked as though it hadn’t been washed. We took from another table and told waitress who didn’t seem too interested. When looking around there was food under several tables and a dirty serviette on the floor beneath our table which was awful and this was first service of the day so had obviously not been cleaned day before. When food arrived I had ham, egg and chips and although eggs perfect and Ham was gorgeous, the chips looked burnt but weren’t and I can only guess that the oil these were cooked in was filthy and needed changing, very off putting. We ordered dessert and it was not busy but we had to wait nearly half an hour and this has never happened before. I must say this was so disappointing and embarrassing although my sister in law didn’t say anything. It really has put us off and I don’t know what went wrong on this occasion but I won’t be going there in a hurry that’s for sure which is a shame as previous visits have always been great food and service and never had issue with cleanliness before.

There was only one person waiting on the tables which meant delays and we were shocked to see some young children clearing & setting tables. Once we finally got our food my partner found a hair in her salad and my plate was covered in fluff. The bread for my sandwich was stale and very had to eat. Visited the Dog & Partridge today fir Sunday Lunch.Where do I start.....Well, from ordering to receiving our dinner it took 40 minutes when it arrived it was cold! I cut my meat and tasted it just to confirm all the food was all indeed cold and it was.We called the waitress explained we couldn't eat the food as it was cold, she apologised and took our food away. Less than 10 minutes later our food was re-served on a different plate. My husbands now had 2 thick slices of pork on it, previously it had bedn one but my meat was the same piece I had previously checked and tasted as it had the slice missing. In my opinion all they had done was microwaved it on a different plate! We are both very disappointed with the length of time it took to receive our meal, and how it was then replated. Also, the quality ofvthe food (meat and vegetables) was sadly below par of a restaurant advertising freshly prepared local produce roast dinners. We will not be returning and would not recommend eating at this restaurant.

We first visited The Dog & Partridge with a large'ish group of people at the end of an evenings' Treasure Hunt, back in July. The food was lovely and the service, although a little slow due to being suddenly very busy, was very pleasant and polite. My initial impression when we arrived outside was 'nothing to get excited about', but the food was superb - tasty, hot, good sized portions and freshly cooked. The gammon and tuna steak were of an excellent quality, and good cuts.On the back of this visit, we visited with family, for late afternoon lunch, outside in the garden. It was no trouble for the waitress to bring our food all the way over to where we were sitting, and again the food and service could not be faulted. Everyone enjoyed what they had.The prices are very reasonable, and you would have to go a long way to find somewhere to match or better this place. PS The waitress from Lancashire is a real asset to the place as well, as she works really hard to make everything as nice as possible.

Lovely garden. Nice atmosphere. Sadly service slow and the roast dinner below average. Dog friendly and made welcome plus water bowls supplied.

The one on the A128 Brentwood road.Met friends for lunch we had'nt seen for ages,we all had the ham egg & chips, not adventurous but very tasty, especially the chips, nice big fat ones! Had cheesecake after, delicious.Very good cheerful bar staff and did'nt have to wait long after order taken,as usual these days, order and pay at the bar first.Nice garden outside with pond when the weathers good.A few kids inside so it's a child friendly pub.We were there for hours and guys were stopping off for a drink after work and it started getting lively,we'd been there 6 hours!

We used to go here at least twice a month but the last visit the place was dirty , food over the floor, tables not cleared . We had two meals brought over but they forgot the third meal. Then we wanted just ice cream for dessert and was told it would be an hours wait. We left obviously very disappointed.

After having such a nice visit the last time, we decided to go back! Wasn't disappointed in the slightest. The ribeye was delicious and cooked just how I asked. The staff are very friendly and nothing's too much trouble. It's so nice to still be able to go to such a traditional pub with good food and so much to choose from. My mum had the cod and chips, I had to steal abit. Was delicious. The value for money is really good! Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Looking forward to hot weather to get out in that beautiful garden!!!

I will start with the good bits. The phone was answered and our booking made. That’s covered the good bits. We might as well just have turned up without notice. This was an early weekday booking and neither the bar or restaurant were busy, the booking was for a group of 10. The food (I use the term loosely) took over an hour and a half to begin to arrive at the table. I was reassured about the quality of the food by the waiter telling one of our party to be careful as their chicken fajita had just come straight from the microwave and was very hot. It was all pretty much downhill from there. I was amazed to see how much (potentially) good food was turned into rubbish and served to paying guests. All in all a night at the golden arches would have provided better quality food and better service. These people clearly have no idea what they are doing. What a waste of money and how disapointing for an 87 year old lady.

Visited on Sunday 17th April for Sunday lunch. Waited an hour for our main course roast dinners to arrive. We overheard another table complaining after 40 minutes that their food still hadn't arrived. One large table had 3 meals brought out and the rest took 10/15 minutes at least to arrive. When our food arrived the the beef was like tough boil in the bag meat. The Yorkshire puddings had cold patches as they were frozen ones that hadn't been reheated properly. The roast potatoes had no crunch or crispness. Gravy and veg were more or less fine! Have visited a few times in the past and the roast was ok. Maybe 3.5/5 in the past. But will never visit again.

The "aroma" outside from the kitchen extraction should have alerted us to the quality of the food. It smelled like the fat needed changing. We hadn't visited this pub for several years but had memories of a really good meal. We were seated at a table, but it felt as if years of grease were covering the outdated furniture. I wish I had followed my instincts and walked out when the overwhelming smell of old frying fat filled the space. If I could give 5 stars, it would be for the waitress, who was really friendly and nothing was too much trouble for her. The food, although presented quite well, was nothing special. The fat chips and sweet potato fries were not quite cooked enough and were and slimy. The doors from the pub were kept open and the rowdy bar visitors' bellows and shouting filled the restaurant. As mentioned before, it had been several years since I had visited but I will steer clear in future.

It was just a Tuesday lunchtime when we stopped for a snack, but the restaurant was almost full. We only wanted a sandwich and were happy to sit at the patio looking out over the duck pond. The huge sandwich came with either chips or salad. The waitress was friendly and welcoming. we have eaten in the restaurant before but always in the evening, so it was pleasing to see it as busy at lunchtime. there is plenty of parking but there are a lot of potholes.

Service with a smile? Not a chance, the waitress was miserable for the whole evening and it's no wonder the place is empty. Food was average, when I can easily claim to be able to apply more culinary finesse in my own kitchen there is trouble. The food is bland and all tastes like it has been boiled. "Caramlised" onions were raw onions covered in oil, presentation is sloppy at best and the layout of the place is reminiscent of a slalom ski course with all the misplaced furniture and chairs. No wonder they need to lure punters in with the taste card. Avoid!

The Dog and Partridge is a joy to visit. The food in the restaurant is cooked by a young man who to my certain knowledge has been there since he qualified back in 2007. To me that speaks volumes about the management. (Angie) The tables are the domain of a young lady who has been there for an equal length of time. In the summer or just a nice day, the gardens are a treat and if a short break from driving is your wish Angie and the Dog and Partridge would not be a bad choice. Just a few miles off Junction 30 of the M25 and it beats service station meals.

I was atending training at a nearby hotel where food was not available. I drove to this place after looking around for a suitable place for lunch. On entering the staff were very welcoming. M anxiety about eating outside London were allayed when they explained their lunch menu. I was also given a lunch menu.Si I decided to have a proper lunch meal. To be safe O ordered a Panini with Garlic Bread as a side. I also ordered a beer.I did not have long to wait for the meal. The lady who served me was very friendly smiling and quite interested in my order. There were six people in the restaurant all over the age of 40s. My Panini was well cooked but the side order potato skins were too dry and salty. The ambiance was perfect with a small lake and ducks, lovely place to eat.But a couple next to me ordered what I later found out, fishcakes. Boy they looked sizzling! No, I am not greedy. Just curious foody.Certainly next time I am in Grays, I will make a date with this place.

Called in for lunch on way to taking my husband to his appointment at the nearby hospital. Ordered fish & chips and burger with bacon & chips at the bar. After 20 minutes my husband commented that he hadn't seen any food being served; the 2 ladies seated next to us who ordered just before we did got their food 10 minutes later and I asked at the bar about our food as we were on a time schedule. The unsympathetic barmaid checked with the kitchen and told me another 5 minutes as they were "really busy" ....besides us and the 2 ladies I spotted about 14 people in the restaurant area, about half full. Not what I would call busy exactly. It was almost 10 minutes before our food arrived and it was difficult to distinguish my husband's piece of fish perched on top of his fat chips! Admittedly it was cod loin but we couldn't believe we had waited over 40 minutes for such a tiny fish and dark chips that looked as though they had been cooked twice. By then we had only about 10 minutes before we needed to leave, I was thoroughly fed up with the lack of service since nobody had apologised for the delay and returned the food to the bar, complaining that we had been kept waiting over 40 minutes to be served with the smallest fish I'd ever seen! The waitress admitted it was "on the small side" and offered another pîece of fish. I declined explaining we had run out of time and needed to leave, so paid for our drinks and left. It's no surprise to say we will never venture there again!

As a rule I prefer not to place bad reviews, the place may be having a bad day or I might be in a bad mood. I had heard many good reports about this Restaurant, but had a bad report the day before we came. I had decided to take friends (2) for a pre Christmas dinner. We arrived at 17.45 and did not manage to get out until nearly 21.00 (not by choice). we chose a table near the window but the light bulb was out and so it was dark, we moved over to the other side. We started of with the Soups (Caramelised Onions and Potatoe ), these arrived about 20 minutes later and lukewarm, one did get reheated. We also had the Garlic bread for starters which was a thin slice of crusty bread with garlic butter on it. The cheeseboard then arrived which to be fair was very nice with a nice amount of cheese, ham and pickled cucumbers. For Mains we decided to have the Gammon, Egg & Chips, these arrived 20 minutes later. The Gammon was very tasty but slightly chewy, sorry the chips tasted precooked, the eggs were soft as requested. We then had a couple of deserts (another 20 minutes) of Spiced Apple Parcels with blackcurrant sorbet and Banana split with blackcurrant compote. The parcels (stamps would be a better phrase) were overdone and very crispy with hardly any filling and so small, the banana split was nice but overloaded with compote (nice to complain about too much) we left full but not contented especially after paying nearly £90.00 for the evening. The staff were trying to be helpful but without food to serve there is not much they can do. The bar area is next to the entrance to the dining area and all we heard for about the first hour was expletives from customers at the bar. The gents toilets looked clean but did not smell very nice. I went back to the person who had given me the bad report and apart from "I told you so" did say that it used to be really great to go in there and have Sunday lunch.

Went to this restaurant on Saturday night for a meal we first found it hard to get in as the front entrance is not in use so we had to walk round in the car park and go in the back. When we walked in it was a little busy so we waited to be seated but found they don't do that here we had to find our own table and order and pay at the bar. Staff were friendly. We sat on table 4 which looked like it had been strapped around car park about 10 times as it was scratched and dirty. Our starters came and the man told us is we want to eat with a knife and fork we must go and get them ourself. So off I went and got forks as there was no knifes. We finished our starters and sat there for about 20 mins for our mains to which our starters plates were still present on our table. The main came out and my friend had the chic chic chicken platter which he said was nice apart from the chips which looked like they had sat in the kitchen for ages or double cooked to get them hot again and the the same with the onion rings. I have the 10oz rump steak medium rare which was cooked great but didn't like the skillet they came out on and what's with the boiled onions, the chips were the same as my friends. When we sat at the table eating our dinner a man and woman was leaving he pub and the man said what do we think of the food, I said to him " what do you think", he said its s**t to which i said " it's our first time here and might just give it a miss again" We didn't stay for desert I wanted to leave after my mains as didn't want to sit on a dark onion smelling pub any longer

Popped in for a quick bite. It was pleasant but the nicest thing there was that everyone knew each other which gave it a friendly feel. Ordered for the first time beer battered haloumi which was delicious. They do very fat chips which were lovely on a cold and foggy day. Nice treat.

We pass here quite frequently on the A128 and being that it was lunchtime we decided to stop and have a bite to eat. I am so pleased we did, we thought the food was really good and presented nicely too. I had the Butchers Ham and Relish Wrap with a side salad. And my hubby had the Brie Cheese Wrap with a portion of chips he said the chips were awesome. We sat looking out of the window which over looked a small Lake with lots going on with Ducks ect. on the whole a good all round Pub with pleasant Staff and nice food, you couldn't really ask for more.

Leavers of Woodside County Primary School 1986-1989 met yesterday for a delicious and plentiful reunion buffet in North Stifford. Shout out to Bobby and staff at the pub for making our event run so smoothly…nothing was too much for them and everyone enjoyed their drinks and the wide range of foods: Crispy Prawns Nachos (V) Onion Rings with BBQ Sauce (V) BBQ-Glazed Chicken Wings Garlic Bread (V) Beer-Battered Salt and Pepper Mushrooms* with Blue Cheese Sauce (V) Salt and Chilli Chicken Fries with Spicy Salsa Sauce Mozzarella and Jalapeño Sticks* with Sweet Chilli Sauce (V) Vegetable Samosas with Mango Chutney (VE) Cheese and Tomato Wrap (V) BLT Wrap Southern-Fried Chicken Wrap They set up the area with our buffet so beautifully and I would recommend it as an ideal place for a get-together.
