The Dog and Donkey is a really great place to enjoy an evening. Some months ago we booked the venue for a private function and the booking was made very easy with all our questions answered and on the night the pub was amazing. Great food served by cheerful staff who worked with us to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Steve the DJ is also worth a mention as he at very short notice - 10mins re jigged a music quiz and provided music throughout the night to match the group which kept the dance floor busy. Thanks again Rachel

Are there for a second time for a roast at the weekend. Lovely welcome from the guys working there. Nice and clean venue with a great pub vibe. They’ve started to put live music on as well here and really giving the locals a good venue to go and enjoy some time. Great work, great food and great service.

Great pub - good selection of beers and ciders, friendly bar staff. locals happy to chat to us holiday makers, which was really nice. Drank in there several times over the weekend. Did find the Sunday lunch disappointing but that's personal preference I guess.

We made a reservation but on arrival it was clear a table hadn't been reserved for us. We were given the worst table in the pub and upon asking to change were given a lack lustre response. In fact we were not even given a welcome. Eventually we were given another table but under duress. Food was OK although the gravy runny and tasteless and the cauliflower cheese didn't have much cheese in it. The pub dingy and dirty.

Great pub, really friendly and clean. Has a great space at the rear of the pub and a selection of board games for the kids to play. Very clean with a great selection of ales served directly from the cellar. I’ve seen a few comments and people marking it down for no food, so what, lots of pubs don’t do food. Lovely place, will definitely be going back.

Nice pub, lovely and clean and the landlord is very welcoming. Only down side is no food but they do allow you to order from just eat. Shame the locals don't support it because once your local is gone it's gone.

This pub has so much character. The landlord Nick is so friendly and accommodating. They don’t serve food however they do allow you to order in food from Deliveroo, Uber Eats if you want or any other take-aways. What I personally love about this pub is it’s dog / animal friendly. There is a beer garden to the back and if your lucky you get to see all the horses from the neighbouring farm. Nick made us feel so welcome and a few of the locals and when we had a flat tyre - the people were quick to offer places to go to sort it. Definitely worth a trip if you’re in the area. Open from 12pm - 23.00pm until September- totally coming here again.

3rd visit to this pub and each time the staff have been incredibly accomodating. Each time the owner has waited on us hand and foot, and today we met another barperson who was just as friendly. Good sized pub, local friendly feel at the front around the bar, cozy little room full of board games and a TV, and a big function room complete with skittles, darts and more. Tonight, I visited with my partner and her 3 young children and they could not have doneore for us. They participated with the board games, joined in with the laughs and was genuinely loving. Such a great pub, I am so happy this has become my new local. This is the benchmark for me now, on what a good pub should be. Thank you and see you again soon.

In the 8 years we have lived near to this pub we have never been in until now. It’s not hugely appealing from the outside but quite different once inside the front door. Very welcoming and nicely decorated. We walked through with our drinks to the garden out the back which directly looks onto fields with horses. It won’t be the last visit now I have seen beyond the front door.

Now the shackles of a large pub chain have been cast off, Nick runs in my view the best local freehouse in the area. It is a welcoming village pub serving an excellent selection of local real ales at excellent prices - at the time of writing £3.30 for an excellent pint of Gun Dog direct from the cellar. In winter there is a welcoming fire in the bar, and the pub serves good simple pub grub at great prices - nothing fancy or pretentious, just the sort of place to pop down to if you can't be bothered to cook one evening. There is a lot going on - skittles many evenings, a pub quiz even a ukulele evening on a Monday night. A great place to meet up with friends and/or locals. Sometimes there is football on the TV, but when that's not happening the TV disappears behind a purpose built cover in a very sympathetic way which transforms the bar back to a welcoming local retreat. It's so good to see the pub now as a freehouse; it's well worth a visit.

Had lunch there today with friends, we have visited many times before and it has always been brilliant. Today a very sour faced lady hardly bothered to speak to us at all behind the bar we ordered drinks and food no smiles or welcome at all! My steak and kidney pudding off the specials board needed a kango hammer to cut through it, and the mash and veg definitely seen better days! My friend had the scampi and chips, the chips being hard and not cooked properly and scampi having soggy crumb on the outside! In the 15 years we have been visiting this pub it was the worst experience ever! The only good thing about it was the fire.

Popped in for a quick lunch on the way back from Exmouth. prices were very reasonable and superb value. We had Liver and Bacon, mash and veg (really good and plenty of it) and Scampi, chips and peas. The veg was a little over cooked to be honest but not a disaster and I was impressed they had brown French mustard as most places only ever have Djon or English. We both enjoyed our meals with a beer and love the fact that we could take our dogs in too. Good hearty pub fare, very well priced, and nice service. Wish this was local to us. I’d be in there every week! A real find, a very pleasant lunch and we will certainly be back. Thank you again for looking after us.

Been a while since I have popped in to the Dog and Donkey at Knowle, but was out with the "Long Haired General" and the Pooch, for a nice walk along the railway line today and the rain hit. How convenient 3 miles from home and outside a pub. "Rude not to" thought I. Went in, ordered a cup of tea for her ladyship, doggy was made welcome. (Biscuits in a jar on bar) and ordered a pint of Hogfather 8.5% cider from their impressive selection of cider and ales. Such a pleasure that they still serve their ales and ciders "from the cellar" like it should be. We were not going to stop for some scoff, as it was a quarter to 12, but I spied a "breakfast" menu on the bar, served til 12. Ordered a large for me and a small for the wife, whilst chatting to "Nick" the owner/landlord. He has kept the old pub magic going, with skittles, euchre, pub quiz and darts, still bringing trade to the pub and making it a great community place. I had a browse of the menu, which is pretty much as it was last time, but that is not a critiscism. I get fed up going to pubs that try to be something they are not, instead of doing good home cooked pub grub at a fair price, many try to serve art on a plate with a sneaky little pea puree or a lime jus. Please dont. The Dog serves good grub, nice portions, fair prices and hot plates. Breakfast arrived, all the works and hit the spot, had to have a pint of Sams Cider from Winkleigh 7.5% just wonderful, helped breakfast down. Several groups of 2/3 came in with dogs, which is nice to see, even though the road was closed for maintenance whilst we were there. I tried to blag a third cider but got that feeling the "heat seeking rolling pin" was being fired up, so said our goodbyes to a great little place, hoping I wont leave it so long to come back. It is an ideal stop if you ride the old railway cycle route from Exmouth to Budleigh, so I may have to pedal back soon.

we took a punt on this pub due to our group size and we weren't disappointed; once you get over the fact that it doesn't look too appealing from the outside, the owners are clearly renovating the pub. the food is good honest pub grub with good size portions at reasonable prices. what lets this pub down is it is touted as family friendly and whilst it certainly is friendly there is literally nothing inside the pub for the kids once inside.

We had the steak dish and the fishermans pie. The steak was brought out with the fish pie, but the onion rings to go with the steak arrived on a separate plate a few minutes later. The veg that came with the fish pie were cold and had to be replaced. Otherwise steak and fish pie were ok. The pint of otter ale was cloudy with a lot of sediment as you got three quarters of the way down. There were only three eating tables, holding up to 12 people, and the room was very unwelcoming. There was another dining area leading out to the back garden, but we never got a choice.

We were organising a surprise birthday party, Nick and his team could not have done any more to help things run seamlessly. Allowing us access the the room early to set up and suggesting the best location for the disco, food, cake and of course dance floor made things so much easier. The food was amazing, plenty to go around, piping hot and a wonderful selection at a good price. Would we use The Dog and Donkey for a function again? Yes without hesitation. This pub is situated in Knowle on the outskirts of Budleigh Salterton. The village itself is nothing to write home about and neither is the pub. The exterior of the pub needs a bit of sprucing up to encourage you to venture inside. The business has recently been taken over and the pub is now a free house. The owner has experience of running another pub in the area so clearly knows the ropes and I feel sure he will continue to improve and make a success of it.

After a lovely walk on exmouth beach we hunted for a dog friendly pub on the way home. Thought we'd try here and we're certainly glad we did. We walked in the door and were greeted straight away from the lady behind the bar. My husband asked if we were allowed to sit anywhere with the dog (often dog friendly places have a designated area ) the kind lady said yes, she showed us where the water bowl was also. There was a lovely log fire on. We were amazed at how big the pub was inside as it didn't look it from outside. Very clean and lovely looking. We ordered a meal each lasagne and ham egg and chips, I was hoping for pudding but sadly I couldn't even finish my main as I had so much food but that's a plus for the pub. Food was very tasty and again served by a friendly lady. You certainly won't starve here and the prices are very good. We are looking forward to going again. Very impressed, proper pub grub, great value for money and very pleasant staff. Thank you for a lovely visit .

The beer garden is more like a weed garden, with picnic tables covered in bird droppings. The "classic burger" was so well done (I wasn't asked how I wanted it done) that it was black and crunchy. Can't think of a reason I would ever go back.

I last reviewed this pub under the last licensee who I am pleased to say have moved on. It is now a Free house and in the capable hands of Nick and his merry band. The menu is a little limited at the moment but what is provided is excellent value and there is plenty of it. Todays Sunday Roast lamb with an assortment of 5 veggies was lovely and great value at £8.95 and was followed by some scrummy desserts and a large mug of coffee. For the real ale drinkers among us, there is a good selection of ale, all beautifully kept and reasonably priced. Nick has worked hard to make this a welcoming place to visit and is continuing to improve the ambience and what is on offer. A good place to eat or to call into for a drink. There is also an enclosed beer garden to the rear, great for those summer days.

Having visited the pub under previous management we decided to try for a beer first before booking in for a meal. The atmosphere then was so good that we had no hesitation in returning the following night for dinner and we were not disappointed. The service was first class and although being pub food, rather than fine dining, the quantity and quality for the price paid could not be faulted. The new management certainly have the skills to turn this traditional village pub around and we wish them well. Although we live too far away to become regulars we shall certainly visit again whenever we are in the area and have no hesitation in recommending to others.

My friend and I went for lunch last week as we had heard it was under new management. We ordered liver and bacon. The meals were brought out one at a time and another trip for the vegetables. Looking at the meals you would not have thought they were the same meal. My friends had what looked like rich onion gravy on the liver but mine looked like they had poured the potato water over it. The veg came out looking nicely cooked and nice bright colours. When I started to eat mine I found it had over half a plate of very lumpy waxy mashed potatoes that were very watery. There was no gravy and definitely no onions. I left most of mine and my friend left a lot of hers. We decided not to waste time or money on dessert. We did not complain as no one seemed interested. Even the girl that took the plates away did not ask if everything was OK or why we had left so much. The whole experience was atrocious and we decided to leave and never go back and would not even try a second time. A shame as we were quite excited about going back especially as it has gone back to its old name of Dog and Donkey from Britannia.

This very friendly pub is only a ten minute walk from the superb Pooh Cottage Holiday park. During our four days at the park, we visited the Dog and Donkey several times, for drinks and for meals. It had recently been reopened and during our short time there, we could see how friendly the owners, staff and the locals were too. The inside was well decorated and advertised as dog friendly. Our two Border Collies were made very welcome and were even given treats. They sell several real ales and local brews too. The lunchtime and evening meals we had were very reasonably priced and were very good size meals. They have theme nights, a couple of nights a week which attracts a good crowd, but as the inside is much bigger than it looks from the outside, it caters well. We had no problem parking our motorhome out the front and off the road. I could tell that the new owners were going to be a success.

Big five stars to the newly reopened Dog And Donkey/Britannia in Knowle today. Out for a walk with daughters dog and the wife, popped in at 1pm for lunch. Small menu with something for all, food was bloody lovely , cracking chilli (Not mince but tender beef chunks) with rice. Piping hot plates and some sweet potato fries. Mrs had the fish pie with cheesy mash topping and peas. (The waitress came and asked did she want just peas or full veg! Nice, she had just peas) Good size portions and a great pint of Ale. Served as it should be, straight from the barrel. The pub was clean, skittle alley and pool table out the back, beer garden facing a horse paddock. Friendly staff and good prices. Will definitely go again. Glad to see this great little pub back on form. Good luck.

Decided to visit the Combe Garden Centre, overdue really as we are quite local. Went into the Kitchen at Combe for lunch. We had to wait behind the rope to be seated. I can understand this is busy times, but it was quiet and being seated involved the member of staff giving us a menu and help yourself to a seat. All well and good, but waiting what seemed a very long time behind the rope without even a menu to peruse was just plain daft and annoying. My wife wanted the jacket potato, but it clearly said on the menu this wasn’t available on a Sunday. We spotted a jacket spud being served and after an enquiry we were told we can ignore the menu in that respect. Whilst waiting at our table, we felt sorry for people coming in that wanted a seat with a brolly for shade, the only two tables suitable had ‘reserved for large parties’ on them. These tables held about 6-7 people and remained unused all the time we were there. Seemed ridiculous. Anyway, the positives, the food was promptly served and the quality good and the surroundings were very pleasant and a delight to sit in. Will we come back? Unlikely I feel, it could be so much better but needs better organisation and removal of petty rules.

Car broke down on the Axminster bypass: when fixed I had lost the will to drive another 4 hours so checked into the George Inn. In the middle of an outrageously good Halloween party, the staff were never the less attentive, sympathetic and checked me in quickly.
