A quiet and cool dining room on a very hot day. Calm and restful decor. Johannes was a great maitre d’ and ensured we had a lovely evening. Food was most enjoyable.

First year anniversary meal , stayed at the Cotswold house and Spa. The menu in the fig was limited nothing particularly inspiring at all . Opted for the beef and a steak in the end , would have preferred the duck but they had run out . The food arrived was well presented. The beef tasted nice , worked well with the jus , potatoes but would describe it as lukewarm at most . The steak was quite tough and again lukewarm. For dessert opted for cheese plater and cheesecake. Again both presented well only three cheeses offered but tasted okay . Cheesecake was average. The wine list was also quite limited and uninspiring. The overall experience was okay , staff. Friendly but this was not the treat and dinning experience I would have hoped for , for such a special occasion.

I treated my Mum to a Champagne afternoon tea for her birthday. First impressions were not good, all the staff we encountered on Reception were blunt & self righteous, I asked to see any room as I wanted to book for a future stay, absolute ‘no’ as it was changeover day, really?! I won’t be coming back anyway now. We were seated & were the only table in the Fig, however 30mins later nothing, even though I had sent our menu through 2 weeks ago due to dietary requirements, we still hadn’t even had our tea yet, let alone the food! Tea then came but no milk, so had to wait another 10mins for a member of staff to appear. Sandwiches to be fair were good BUT the scones were the worst scones I’ve ever tasted, absolutely minuscule & had no flavour whatsoever. Such a huge disappointment. Two other tables had arrived by then & all thought service was shocking. Come on guys, it shouldn’t be hard! Don’t waste your money coming here, it really isn’t worth it! Also no mention of a happy birthday for my Mum at all :(

After attending a matinee at the theatre in Stratford, we thought it would be good to have a full afternoon tea before our 2 hour drive home. We couldn't find anywhere in Stratford, so looked a little further afield and booked it at The Fig. Fortunately they will accept bookings later in the afternoon (up until 5pm, I think). So although it is a bit of a drive from Stratford it was the best option we could find. We enjoyed it very much - the sandwiches were fresh, and the cakes were good. I would probably say, that on balance, the cakes could have been a little larger and then we could have just had one, rather than two, scones each. In the end we took our second scones home as we were too full to eat them at the time. The staff were pleasant and friendly, and the restaurant was a calm space.

Went for an Afternoon Tea at the Fig Restaurant yesterday at 3pm, December 22nd. It was a Birthday present for my husband & I believe I did say that on the booking form when I booked it but nothing 'special' was produced. Anyway, the two young people serving us were very pleasant and the afternoon tea itself was faultless (it really was delicious & fresh & light & we loved it) but the atmosphere was ZERO. No fire in the grate, virtually no Christmas decorations, except one artificial bower over said cold fire place and no music for the first 20 minutes (which we needed because we were the only ones there so no 'buzz' of fellow afternoon tea drinkers). So, all in all, a lovely, lovely tea spoiled by sitting in a dull, cheerless room surrounded by empty tables. Not sure whether to recommend or not even if the tea was generous, tasty & fresh.

We were staying at the Camden House Hotel and decided to eat there, based on the reviews. The restaurant shares its menu with the hotel’s Bistro. The room is high and Regency elegant and quite worth dressing up for…… and it was my wife’s birthday . A sensibly priced menu, she had scallops, duck breast and crème caramel, I had pork belly, venison and the crème caramel. Only the crème caramel was less than perfect, it could have been a bit smoother, but overall it was such a good meal, with very agreeable service and an intelligent wine list that we certainly made a good choice

I booked afternoon tea as a birthday gift for my sister who was visiting from America. I wanted a sophisticated, beautiful experience. On arrival we enquired at Reception about our booking in Fig Restaurant and we’re directed to the bar! We had to wait for someone to come and ask us what we wanted. We then walked back through Reception to the restaurant!! Bizarre. The room was disappointing, cold and lacking atmosphere. The service was sporadic. We were seated but then left waiting. Eventually the young girl brought a tea box for us to choose a tea. Again there was a long wait before she came back. My sister asked for some iced water. This didn’t arrive until I managed to catch someone else 15 minutes later. The afternoon tea was okay. The bread was dry on the sandwiches, the cakes lacked flavour. The scones were warm and tasted delicious. There was never anyone in the room to ask things. Anytime a waiter or waitress came they brought tea to another table and then disappeared. When our pots of tea arrived my sister asked for extra hot water- didn’t arrive at all!! On the website it talks of views of The Cotswolds… definitely not. This was not value for money at all. We couldn’t wait to leave. Very disappointing service and food.

While staying at The Fish, we had booked a meal at Fig in Chipping Camden (the next village). Fig is somewhat different from most restaurants in that it only offers taster menus but there are a few to choose from - 6 courses or 8 courses, including a vegetarian/vegan menu and the ability to chooses courses from different menus as substitutes. One of us is a vegetarian who can't eat mushrooms and the other one is a pescatarian - we both ate wonderfully well and the food was delicious - so much so that neither of us even considered getting the camera out to photograph the dishes!

We visited the Fig restaurant again in June after eating there 2 years ago because my husband enjoyed it so much that he wanted vouchers for his 40th birthday to eat there again. We used £100 for the two of us for the 3 course menu (the À la carte would have been more than this). Overall it was an amazing meal and we really enjoyed it again. If really pushed we felt that it wasn't quite as good as when we visited in 2017 but that was being a little picky because it was still excellent. There was some bread we had last time that was fantastic and this time around it wasn't quite as exceptional. If we hadn't had been before and given it 5, then I would have given it 5 this time, because it really was excellent, but last time it was outstanding. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, the staff were great and there are little extra courses/treats in between courses that made it feel very special. We love the hotel, gardens behind it and high street for a quick wander or drink too. It probably could have been a little more professional with the admin, we arrived and had to wait to find someone that could help us on reception, there was a girl, possibly new but she didn't acknowledge us so we wandered in to the bar to see if someone was around, they couldn't find our booking for a bit and then they took our voucher on reception (bought direct from the hotel), but when we were given the bill we had to explain there was a voucher to be deducted and they had to go off to find it which was a little awkward - I'd probably have given it a 5 if the customer service had been faultless. However, I would definitely say that this is a great place to have a delicious meal and we'd definitely still recommend it. I think the photos speak for themselves when it comes to showing how beautiful the presentation was. Thank you Fig for another lovely meal in a beautiful setting.

This review is of the Bistro at the Cotswold House Hotel. Years ago this place was called Hicks and we loved it. It changed hands a few years ago but was still pretty good. We went there today and were very disappointed in its latest reincarnation. We were hoping for a proper lunch but the main course offerings were very limited, as were the starters. My husband had a smoked mackerel pate starter that came without toast or bread - few croutons scattered on top were supposed to suffice. He followed this with a penne pasta dish which would have disgraced a canteen. He, who rarely complains, described it as 'disgusting' My whole plaice was quite well cooked but came with just a small portion of new potatoes and no other veg, not even a salad garnish. My sister-in-law had the chicken breast which was boring in the extreme. The restaurant seems to have changed its focus more towards sandwiches and sharing platters but they didn't look very appetising either. If that is what people want they should stop trying to pretend to serve meals and concentrate on their other offerings.

The food was pretty good (but not outstanding) and the service was satisfactory (but not excellent); I'd expected more from this restaurant since their prices are about 50% higher than other good restaurants we visited during our stay in town. I'd like to have assigned 3-1/2 stars (there's a vast gap between "average" and "very good"), but ultimately went with 4 -- it's better than the neighbors, just not 50% better ...

My wife reached a special birthday on April 8th. As part of my present to her, I researched fully and came apon this restaurant. When I phoned ten days in advance to book, I was told " Yes, we are open on Tuesday April 8th", so not only did I book a table for four for dinner, but also ordered a cake with one candle. We left Norfolk on Monday April 7th for a short break with friends in the Cotswolds, and arrived on the evening of the 8th at 7.30 pm, only to be greeted with " Oh, hello we've been trying to phone you. The restaurant is closed this evening".Late as it was, we ate in the adjoining grill, but no fulsome apology, explanation or discount was forthcoming. On listening to the answerphone back home in Norfolk, we found a message left on April 8th (the very day of the birthday event) asking me to phone. No explanation. If it was a last minute crisis (ill-health, accident) where was the cake, surely made a day or so before?I cannot recommend this restaurant, not merely because they cancelled my booking, but the poor customer care I received afterwards.Maybe if you book here you should ask the staff for a deposit or credit card number, or you may find it closed!

But for dinner at the Dining Room on Saturday night, the food was superb, London quality but at Campden prices. The only disappointment was a wine list which was too limited though still good quality and the Maître d' said that they are intending to add to the list in the new year. Choice was poor, quantity mean and it was the worst gourmet meal we have ever had. Also the service was poor.

Having eaten next door at the Kings Hotel (whilst we were staying there - see separate review) we thought we'd have a change of scenery. We had considered staying at the hotel, but dismissed it (don't ask me why). Our table was booked for 8.00pm, and we enjoyed a glass of fizz in the lounge before our meal. We were served very interesting hor d'oeuvres, with a Branston pickle foam !! Having demolished our hor d'oeuvres we were taken to our table. Very modern decor throughout the restaurant and the rest the hotel. The seven course menu was sublime, and really cannot fault anything. Delicious pan seared asparagus, followed by Ham Hock beignets (don;t ask, just try them) and the most amazing beef fillet that simply melted away, we had cheese and pre dessert too !The Wine list was comprehensive, and 'reasonable' and service was second to none. The M'D introduced the chef at the end of our meal, to round off the experience.5 Stars

We had dinner in the dinning room the day after our wedding, the food is fantastic! I felt the chef was on top of his game & a credit to the hotel. It was a 7 course dinner with all aspects of it pulled off to the highest standards, it's a nice setting & they have not tried to fit in as many tables as they can. We will be back 100%. Thank you for making our evening so special.

Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by very friendly and professional staff that made us feel very welcome and relaxed. We had heard very good things about the new chef so I said "just feed me!". We had the £55 menu that had excellent choices but I thought who better to recommend than the man himself. The food was divine with perfect presentation and speed of service.Never before have I been treated to such quality.Chef's take on classic dishes is mind blowing and will leave you wanting for more!At the end of the evening I was full and very satisfied.Thank you for such a wonderful night :-)

I was looking forward to a nice Easter Sunday lunch with 3 guests. When I booked I was informed that the price was £22.50 each and this was confirmed by phone again before going. We were 30 minutes late but informed the hotel and were told that it was not a problem. There were only a few tables occupied. The menu was £25 and I queried this and was told that it had always been this price. I didn't make a fuss as I had foreign guests. The starters were good and the bread rolls were delicious. The main course was awful. It was also cold but the plates were hot. The hot desserts had finished and the desserts we had were small and ordinary. The cheese option was good. It was a most disappointing lunch on a Special day and certainly not worth £25. It was not a welcoming place and I certainly will never return. I have never written a review before but I was incensed. I wrote to the manager with my complaint and mentioned that I would write a review if I was not happy. I have had no response from them!!

We had their 6 course menu for £55, which was very, very good albeit tiny, tiny portions my husband had to ask for another potato which when it arrived was about the size of a 50 p piece. Stock up on the bread rolls if you have a big appetite, but really you cannot fault the quality of the food. Overall expensive if you add in wine, the total bill was £170 for two. Lovely environment, it felt special, super high ceilings and trendy decor. Service a little cold, apart from blonde waitress who was charming!!!

We had a brilliant night's entertainment and a fantastic curry - the added bonus was that Paul & Carol made sure it was a very welcoming, inclusive and friendly evening for the locals and the visitors. Even though the price was very reasonable we didn't feel that they had compromised on quality at all and like many other people there that night I thought it was great to go out and do something different from the norm - right on our doorsteps. We are overwhelmed with choice in Chipping Campden for places to go and eat and drink in, but we are very short on entertainment and fun. The race night provided all of that and more. So thanks to Paul & Carol at the Cotswold - keep up the good work because all your efforts are creating a great buzz around the town and we will keep spreading the word.

Four of us met for our annual Christmas lunch at the Cotswold Grill. We were looking forward to a good chat and a nice meal. Sadly the meal was really really poor. There were only three other tables in the grill so they had plenty of time to get our food right. However - the fish cakes were non existent balls of deepfried crumb on an under-seasoned and undressed salad. The bavette steaks were ok but cold and lacked any seasoning, the vegetables and potatoes were poor and lack lustre but the bearnaise sauce was beyond belief in an establishment of this kind. It was some absolutely revolting concoction out of a bottle wth a few herbs on top. When we enquired about it we were told it was definitely bearnaise and we did not know, despite our disclosing that one of our husbands had been a chef. All in all it was a despressing experience. The decor was not inspiring, the staff seemed to have had no training and the whole place seemed cold and uninviting including the foyer of the hotel. Very sad that it has gone down hill so much as we remember it in its glory days.

My wife and I visited the Cotswold House Hotel for a quick break before xmas. I chose it primarily because I had heard good things about the chef/restaurant and wanted to give it a try. We had a bit of a bad start at the hotel because the heating wasn't working in our room but they quickly moved us to another room - and as a bonus it was a huge suite - so we were back on track. On to dinner. It was a quiet Wednesday night with only 4 or 5 tables full. The staff seemed a little formal to start but lightened up a bit as the night went on. The restaurant itself is very relaxing, a good mix of formal, but not too formal. Since there weren't many diners I was worried they would pace the food to fast, but they got it spot on - we didn't feel rushed. I think the menu probably changes quite frequently and it was one of those nights where I was going to struggle to pick something as everything looked so good. To start we had pumpkin soup with ricotta croquettes and roasted scallops with wild mushroom and barley. All cooked and seasoned perfectly. For mains we had venison (pretty sure it was cooked sous vide) with chicory and chestnuts and Brill with winter truffle and barley. The fish and venison were extremely high quality and again everything was cooked to perfection. A couple of individual elements were ever so slightly over-seasoned, but it didn't really distract from the overall enjoyment. For puds, I had a poached pear with cranberry and marscapone - perfect. My wife fancied cheese but they didn't have any soft cheese (like a Brie, her favourite) on the menu. She asked the waiter and he said that he could rustle up a local soft cheese, which ended up being fantastic. Overall, my wife and I really loved this restaurant. I had pretty high expectations and they didn't disappoint. A really enjoyable, relaxed evening with extremely good food and wine - and truly amazing value at £35 for 3 courses (plus an amuse).

We visited Cotswold House for a birthday celebration. Champagne on arrival. The most amazing selection of appetisers with fabulous flatbreads, olives, and some fishy things (my husband thought they were wonderful - and although we asked what they were, I can't for the life of me remember now!) Beautifully cooked and presented food, served by friendly and attentive (but not overly so) staff. I can understand why the chef has been chosen as the one to watch in 2013 - from starter to pudding, everying was thoroughly satisfying to the eye and the palate.

My husband and I decided to have breakfast a few days ago and stopped here. Firstly the waiter didn't acknowledge our existence while we waited to be shown a seat as he was too busy writing something down at the bar to even say "just a minute" even, so we sat ourselves. About 5 mins later a lady asked if we wanted breakfast! A few more minutes later some one else wandered through and asked the same question and eventually we were brought the menu, baring in mind it was virtually empty. We ordered a side of toast which was fine and then asked if the eggs Benedict came with 1 or 2 eggs , we were told 2 and foolishly assumed it would come on 2 halfs of a muffin! Eventally 2 large plates arrived each with just one half of a muffin with a piece of ham and 2 tiny poached eggs and sauce, all of which was luke warm and eggs very undercooked. Our cafetiere of coffee barely filled our 2 cups so we asked for a top up. The bill for came to £33.00!! I rarely decline to tip having waitressed in the past, but the service was poor, the food ridiculously overpriced as was the coffee. The 'full English' would have been interesting to see at £14.50 if the eggs benedict was any indication of size, it should be named the 'tight English' I doubt you would leave feeling full. And to cap it all the waitress seemed put out that I didn't tip!

Having read the last couple of reviews we were a little concerned with our reservation for a "special evening" How wrong we were to be worried. The atmosphere was relaxed with casual but attentive and friendly service. The food was much better than expected, we understand that the chef has won many awards and this was certainly evident in the food we had. We could certainly not reccocmend more highly and will certainly return - next time to try the fine dining of which we have heard great things from friends.

We went to the Cotswold House Hotel Bistro with very friends from out of town, we are local. It turned into an almost funny experience, something that reminded us of Fawlty Towers, but by the end when we saw the bill we lost our sense of humour.I know the Hotel has a great reputation and we assumed that the Restaurant would be equally fine dining. It started with our table of four, one of the seats was directly next to the door that led to the toilets, more strange that they would put a chair there rather than annoying. We ordered drinks of which some arrived, but after about 10 minutes J ihad to go and ask for it, apologies ensued as they had forgotten. Then it was announced that our starters would be 20 minutes because they had a function on and were busy. Not a problem. Then we noticed water dripping down the wall next to my wife which becamse heavier andstarted soaking the bench seat shw was on. We asked to be moved, which they did.50 minutes later the starter arrived, which I ordered Pil Pil Prawns. This is where it started going downhill. I am no cook but half a dozen prawns on skewers with a bit of hot sauce (which was bland to say the least) on a bed of less than fresh lettuce leaves, was the most boring, unimaginative starter I have possibly had put in front of me, and at £8.50 was insulting.Onto Main course. I am not a great steak eater as they are often tasteless and chewy, however the description of the Rib Eye at £22.50 (veg extra) convinced me that I should try it. I eat in London at Gauchos occasionally and their Rib eye at about £23.00 is the best I have tasted. So expectations were high. To be fair the steak was nicely cooked and tender but woefully small for the price. The sides were again so boring and tasteless.I cannot even remember what I had for dessert but I remember the concensus was that little imagination, time or effort had been applied. So our bill of £200 for 4 was what I would expect to pay in a decent quality restaurant (we did not have a big drinks bill) and be served decent quality food. Alas the Cotswold Bistro failed on all counts, the only saving grace was that the head waiter was pleasant and helpful and did his best to overcome bad cooking and service.First and last time I am afraid.PSWe went to the Ebrington Arms yesterday (about 2 miles away) for Sunday lunch (3 courses) and it was probably one of the best meals I have had in a Pub/Restaurant. Starters were tasty, well presented and imaginative. The raost lunch was again well presented and tasty. The desserts fantastic. What struck me was the effort that had obviously gone into the design of the starters and desserts, the care and attention to detial in the presentation. My wifes dietary requirements are always a challenge but they not only knew what they were talking about, the chef actually came up with something bespoke for a dessert.my advice is to the Cotswold House Management is to take all your staff up to the Ebrington Arms for a meal and then have a serious look at what you are serving up.

The food was delicious, tremendous value and beautifully presented. The starters were delicious and imaginative.I think we will be back to try tthe dinner menu. All excellent. The only niggle was that the Bearnaise was too sweet and probably out of a bottle.

The menu boasts a fabulous selection of courses, which you can choose to have in any order! We were blown away by the amazing flavours and textures. Each delicious plate of food which was served to us was accompanied with a detailed explanation of where it came from and how it had been cooked. There is a wide selection of restaurants in Chipping Campden, unfortunately we opted for this one. Their sense of customer service was appalling; the table next to us had a steak delivered that they didn't order, we ordered a glass of wine which didn't arrive and then they had the audacity to charge us for a whole bottle when we'd only had a single glass. I'm not sure where the other positive review have come from, but they are a world away from what we experienced. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!

The Cotwolds House now offers two separate restaurants. We had diner in "The Dining Room", that offers fine dining but still retains a friendly informality. We were staying in Chipping Campden for my partners birthday and this was the highlight of our trip so far. The menu has a "mix and match" approach, between 3 to 5 courses can be ordered, with no devision between starters or mains. The simplicity of the descriptions belie the wonderful complexity of each course, full of surprises in flavour and texture. The food looked as good as it tasted and each course was described to us by our waiter who had a full knowledge of the ingredients and techniques used. The whole meal timed perfectly. We opted for 4 courses at £45, with wine from a list that was extensive but reasonably priced. Every course was truly sublime. Cornish turbot cooked perfectly with a rich tasting mix of broad beans, peas and lettuce. Confit Loch Duart Salmon, slow cooked, giving it a soft texture and delicate flavour, served with 5 kinds of raddish. We can't wait to eat here again.

We had the Lunch and Dinner Special. Three of us had the crab salad and ì had a cheese and chillis dish that was excellent. We all had these fantastic angus beefburgers, served with a big truffle, cheese, tomato and lettuce, with onion rings and fries. The burgers were huge, juicy and tasty. Watch out for the English mustard, a little goes a long way - looks like French's mustard, but much more bite to it! This was our second visit and we have been happy both times

I went to the newly relaunched restaurant 'The Dining Room' with friends. The room was not too big (which made for a intimate and relaxed atmosphere) with lovely french windows which looked out onto the garden pathway and surrounding plant filled borders.Only criticism about the restaurant is the lighting, spot lights ruined the beautiful ceiling and were not actually very good, but hoping that this may change as they have not completely finished the room.We were welcomed with a glass of wine and shown to our table. The staff were very attentive, quick to help when needed and were able to recommend a fine bottle of wine! The food was out of this world, I could have 3, 4 or 5 courses but I could have anything in any order (i.e. dessert before my main if I chose to) which somehow added a little more excitement when choosing my dishes. The menu had a small paragraph at the top explaining the intention of the restaurant and food and boy, it did exactly what it said.I only managed 3 courses, the scallops, then the lamb and for dessert the rice pudding (with added extras in between, amuse-bouche, pre-desserts and bread etc) but this was just enough for that content full feeling. All perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, there is not a thing I would change, not even the price! The chef even came out during coffee and made time to sit, chat and also take on board any criticisms there may be.Will be going again.

for a start, the hotel and restaurant is in a picture postcard setting (not that we have stayed overnight...yet) but would make a great place to stay and soak up the cotswolds without having to suffer bourton-on-the-water.We went for dinner recently at the newly opened/relaunched 'dining room', the hotels fine dining offering. The dining room is small but intimate, the overall feel of the place is well presented and relaxed, the staff are attentive but not in your face or pretentious, the food is of exceptional standard and hard to believe that you can eat such food for such a reasonable price, this is NOT the kind of food you can cook at home, it's very accomplished cooking. If you're the kind of person who appreciates top notch food, that has a focus on local sourcing, seasonality and quality of produce but want a less intimidating surrounding in which to do it and without breaking the bank, this place is for you.And to top it all the chef came out and spoke to us after the meal as we were still drinking coffee and liqueurs at the end of service, not often you get to speak to the man responsible for the food you've just eaten and he was genuinely interested in our feedback.we're already planning our second trip back and this time we'll be staying the night.
