We stopped for a light lunch during our travels round the Cotswold's. Ordered a bottle of their house red which was very good and reasonably priced (as it should be as they are wine merchants). The two platters we ordered to share were just right, bread sticks, humus and anti pasta. All eaten on a back courtyard shabby chic and very French. A pleasant hour well spent

The Ox House is just a little bit different, which is something we like. Often busy, but the service sometimes just a little slow however there is always something to watch both inside and through the large windows. The Ox House sits in a busy square in the heart of the village. On a Sunday there are locals, visitors, youngsters, people with dogs, people with children, cyclists, young and old are all made welcome. The food that we have ordered and enjoyed has always been tip top! Toasties are interesting, the duck salad most enjoyable.

Met friends who are local, here for lunch to find the environment and staff pleasant enough. However, despite a fake wood burner glowing red, we were cold and uncomfortable at times. The food was simple and obviously prepared and just needed heating up....it was not that hot and quite frankly dissappointingly small portions, the chilli, tagine and curry having nothing garnishing it; only the fish cake arrived with a tiny amount of salad ...expensive for the size of the portions. The coffee and service good but we will not be returning and if you do be prepared for a rather lack lustre and unimaginative food experience.

This is a classic example of an establishment started with the best of intentions but which does not have a firm eye of the management. We arrived 27.12.16 at 1.30 pm for a snack lunch. Other Half ordered fish pie; I ordered a Latte. Now, you would not think that latte is very complicated. The person who made it had no idea what a latte was. It arrived homogeneously mixed with copious amounts of coffee grounds floating around on the top. Maybe he was a student on vacation 'told' to make coffees.Th fish pie arrived 25 minutes after an order. It was good quality but the waiter apologized for the late arrival as if he has apologized many times before. The cafe is resplendent with French artifacts, maps etc but it is not enough to start something in an enthusiasm. You have to manage it. I noticed that the whole crew were disorientated and 'missing' a manager/ owner.I shall not be returning.

Touring the Cotswold with 4 French friends we stumbled upon this delightful establishment. Finding our way out to the little courtyard at the back we perused the menu! Having a query I returned to the bar and said how nice it was that there were a few greetings in French. The waitress said that one of the owners had lived in France and that although busy at the moment she would tell him he had French guests. How nice it was when he popped in to the courtyard immediately breaking in to the mother tongue of our guests. The wine was excellent but the food a little on the plain side and did not do justice to the wine or ambience.

Drinks served promptly but oh dear dear dear, the simple food ordered - a ham & cheese toastie and a fish pie took 40 minutes to arrive and then what was produced was simply unbelievable. We were told it was made fresh to order and other food was being prepared first for two others in what was an almost empty bistro. The food was luke warm. The toastie tasted horrid and sat beside 5 tiny wilted salad leaves with oil poured on them was a joke. As for a fish pie!!!! A mashed potato and two small pieces of salmon, with 4 pieces of small old toast - nothing else. Two young lads raced about the kitchen we could see from our table and produced these. We demanded a discount, were offered 20% at the bar. My husband produced £10 and said that was all he was prepared to pay "Ten pounds or nothing!" and we left, the girl on the bar wishing us "Have a good day!"

Passing through Northleach at lunch, they are trying to be a little different with a small menu, Parisian style. The food was delicious, and there was an eclectic small producer range of wines by the glass, we ended up getting some to take away too. There's a fab little barn conversion out the back with a log burner and leather sofa's etc. The barn is excellent for private drinks parties, but doesn't have a W.C. The W.C's in the main house/cafe/restaurant could do with modernising. Unfortunately, this venue doesn't serve dinner. The atmosphere and the lunch were both nice however.....we sat in the garden at a wrought iron, holey table and ordered toasted sandwiches. These came on wooden boards with a salad, which apparently had salad dressing on. I say apparently because it became apparent; the salad dressing on the flat wooden board had been dripping off the side of the board, through the holes of the table and onto my brand new jeans. Despite trying to get this out of my jeans I have been unable to, and sadly this incident ruined my visit.

When we asked 40-minutes later where our food was, we were told that they had had trouble with the fish-cakes! No one else was eating so they weren't exactly rushed off their feet and no one came to tell us or even offer us an alternative. There were 2 young girls running the whole place and they seemed completely out of their depth - where was the management? Absent! Terrible experience; went for lunch and came away without eating and didn't receive a discount on the drinks for the terrible experience - appalling. Never again

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I like this place but having recently made three visits in the space of a couple of weeks, I feel it could be so much better if given a bit more attention. First visit was just a cup of coffee in the morning. A lovely young lad served me nicely and was very welcoming. It all went downhill after that! I noticed a poster saying there was live music a few evenings later. So I invited a friend to come. It was in a barn at the back, accessed through an open courtyard. It was extremely badly organised - in fact I don't think any organisation had actually been thought about. The place wasn't all that big and was packed. There were far too many people and no chance of actually seeing or hearing the musicians. A few chairs and a couple of couches, so most people were standing shoulder to shoulder. A lot of people were complaining, using their mobile phones or just chatting with each other because there was no chance of appreciating the music.I felt very sorry for the musicians. It was so disrespectful but understandable because it was just a sea of noisy people standing about in a cold building with the door open. Sufficient chairs in rows are all it would have taken to make this a pleasant evening for everyone. It would have meant we could all see the musicians and hear them play. It would also have automatically limited the number of people coming in. Instead it was a free-for-all. I asked about ordering some food. I was told that no food was being served that night because it was too busy!! I only saw a couple of people working behind the bar and they were running back and forth between the bars front and back. Quote frankly, the evening was chaotic. My third visit a few days later was with another friend for lunch. The lady behind the bar was quite brusque and when I asked if a simple substitution could be made (cheese instead of salami), I was told no as the dish was already plated up. However, she then reluctantly agreed when I told her I'd had that in the past on a previous visit, but when the dish was brought, no cheese was present and she made me feel unwelcome. (Even though it was an already plated up dish, surely it's not that difficult to substitute cheese for salami?)I noticed that aboard said the barn is now open as a lounge bar. Like the rest of the wine bar it's very attractively furnished. Too bad that when we went and had a look at it (on a cold October day), it was freezing cold. I asked the same lady about heating and she told me there was a log burner in there (but not actually lit!). So Ox House, it's such a shame. I really do like you and want to like you more, but you do need to give more thought to your customers (and to your performers). I would love to come more often as I like the ambience very much, but to tell you the truth, recent inconsistent experiences have been a bit off-putting. It would only require some simple changes - better organisation, heat (!), flexibility and pleasant welcoming manner - and overall better attention to your customers, to make this a really nice place.

We had a short stop in Northleach, to wander and to have a snack lunch, and the Ox House tempted us to a glass of wine and soup. It was very pleasant in the courtyard in the sun; the other customers were quietly enjoying the experience and we will go there again.

It was a cold April morning when I took the turn for Northleach and found a great cappuccino at the Ox House -- so nice to be outside of a regularly touristed area and just sit and hear the murmers of locals, while looking out on the market square where an early spring market was setting up. It was such a delightful spot that I returned a few days later for a latte and had an equally enjoyable experience. I would love to sample their wines on a future trip.

Lovely selection of wines and delicious food for lunch. Sitting in the window watching the world go by in the market square - could almost have been France!!

The ambience of The Ox House is a must for anyone who enjoys good wine, flavoursome coffee etc. and needs a friendly watering hole in the middle of the Cotswolds. Limited but mouth-watering menu at lunchtime and casse croute (there's posh!) during the day. Friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating staff. Drink in or buy a bottle or case to take out.

We're in Northleach for a couple of nights and had seen this place on the town website, it sounded like our kind of place so we decided to have lunch there. The place bills itself as a 'Parisienne side street cafe' and to its credit, that's what it is. The music is 'paris jazz' and the feel of the place is informal & laid back, the food is simple. My wife & i had a baked camembert with toast and a charcuterie plate, both were delicious and went very well with the bottle of Pinot Noir we'd picked. The open fire made the place feel inviting and the 2 girls behind the counter were helpful and polite. All in all we had a very pleasant easy lunch and if we were staying in Northleach again, would definitely pay them a visit.Be aware, their website needs updating, they don't have all the wines on it (at time of writing) and the corkage on a bottle to drink onsite is now £8:50.These small details aside, i'd happily recommend this place.

If you just want to buy a great bottle of wine, this is the place to go. The staff will help you choose and you won't be disappointed. But there's so much more about the wine bar..stay a while and have a glass in front of the fire or try something from the limited food menu. It's all great.

We live locally and love it here, this place never fails to deliver on great food, atmosphere and welcoming staff and locals. Our friends who visit regulary are very jealous that we have such a unique and quirky wine bar to enjoy drinks by the log fire in the cold winter months or sit out in the lovely courtyard in the long summer evenings! keep up the good work.

Met my oldest friend here for lunch yesterday as it is half way between our homes.I selected it having looked at tripadvisor. The wine bar/restaurant is very attractively laid out .The welcoming log fire and warm room made a favorable impact.Unfortunately we felt unable to sample the wine as were both driving but both enjoyed our meal although my smoked fish cakes were in fact salmon.I would go back here again.

The owner was very helpful and friendly - despite being clearly very busy he took some time to suggest some wines we might enjoy, which were very affordable (they also stock more expensive options). Did not eat here but would love to try it next time.

Found this place by accident. Lovely little find. Although we only had time for coffee we wished we could have stayed longer. Very friendly. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Nice mix of locals and passers by like us. Well done The Ox House you've got it just right. If we're ever back again we're sample some food and wine.

Visited this evening and it was a terrible experience. Felt like I'd walked into a locals' private club which couldn't have been more unwelcoming.

Following on from my previous review I am now pleased to report my wife and I have returned on a number of occasions and sampled the food and were not disappointed on any occasion. We have had the cheese board, selection of cold meats, vegetarian and standard lasagne and cassoulet and all were prepared or cooked to perfection. The portion sizes are just right, although on the occasion my wifwe and I shared a cheeseboard just to keep us ticking over, I then ordered a cassoulet when I saw 1 being taken to another customers table,( the diet started the following day) The food is rustic and tasty and well worth a visit, as I know we will be. They also do bacon sandwiches on weekend mornings so very tempting with the weekend papers.

Having visited the Ox House a few times before and always had a pleasant experience; this time I felt compelled to write a review. The bar itself is situated within the wine merchants, which means there ar elots of interesting bottle of wine to consider while you eat / drink. As far as I'm aware, they've only just started doing food, and as such the menu is quite simple, but the charcuterie we had was beautifully presented on an olive board with some cornichons and a generous helping of bread. Perfect paysanne food made all the better with the accompaniment of some very interesting and reasonable wines by the glass. We'll be back!

This is a very welcoming place to visit. The coffee is delicious and if the log fire is going the place is wonderful to just sit, very cosily and watch the world go by. We have seen the menu which included cassoulet and chicken/tarrogan pie which seemed reasonably priced but we have not sampled it yet, although this will happen shortly, therefore expect another review once we have eaten there so my ratings at the moment are all noted as not sure. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the staff welcoming.
