What a brilliant pub with great variety of seating options and exceptional staff. We had booked a cabana in the pub garden and the pub v flexible for us to move to a bigger one to celebrate a 30th birthday. The food was clearly freshly cooked and very tasty. The bar staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful and I can genuinely recommend this as an exceptional venue.

I came here a few weeks with some family friends to enjoy Sundsy roast. Everything was perfect. Crispy roast potato with a stunning gravy. My beef was cooked perfect. Thank you for an amazing lunch service. We will be back!

Visiting the Dev once again and once again it did not disappoint! Had an amazing view of the euros in the garden and even more amazing burgers from the shack! Can't recomend this place enough from the great and lively Saturday nights to the chill garden always a winner

Father’s Day : took my husband and two sons for dinner. Three of us had the roast @ 6pm, the beef was so tough, hard to chew , the roast potatoes and veg dried out, hardly any gravy to wet it all. Think myself this was all cooked early in the day and reheated. No I don’t recommend the place, they need to pull their socks up.

I loved the atmosphere in this pub. We wanted bday and didn’t really know where to go in Balham. The staff are really sweet . Joseph M made it for us - so helpful and funny!

visited the Dev for a pre drinks vibe before my night out and was amazed by the great atmosphere inside. The staff, particularly a tall man named Joe, were super friendly and helpful. The cocktails were to die for and even tried some of the small plates, highly recommend the burrata and chicken fillets! will deffo be visiting again! such a gem right in the heart of south london! 10/10

I attended for new years eve. As soon as I arrived (on time) I was asked by two separate staff members within a space of 2 minutes when I wanted to have drinks come out. I stated to the first gentleman I would let him know within 5 minutes, but was harassed sooner than that and had to state very firmly to the second guy I would come back to him. The music was quite low in the run up to new years. When the screen came on at midnight you could not hear the music. In the half hour before midnight the bar staff did an excellent job of serving anyone that was white, female and looked under 30. Unfortunately not being in this demographic my friends and I waited ages to be served. On top of this, it was only when my friend offered to buy the bar man a shot, he served us. It was really upsetting to be treated like this. The place lacked atmosphere considering it was new years. The drinks were over priced and very watered down. The bar man then had the audacity to ask my fella to buy him a drink. I suspect this place is aimed at a certain demographic, and I did not feel as someone who is over 30, female and from a non white background I was visible, welcome, or got any value for my money. I would not recommend this place at all, and was saddened by this experience.

My partner really enjoyed the Sunday roast and wanted more roast potatoes as a standard portion. 4 instead of, three. Cauliflower cheese was too watery. That should have been drained before serving to a customer. Vegan options was poor. A very Sweet nut roast was on offer no nuts and over sweet with cooked carrots, sweet potatoes and some other root vegetables.

Great food,great Guinness, lovely atmosphere. A pub that looks and feels like a pub. The only downside is that being so good,it does get very crowded.

Cozy and twinkly, such a great atmosphere and the food was delish. The roast beef was nice and rare. The sticky toffee pudding was perfection.

I know it was a Saturday evening in early December, but this place was over crowded, very noisy, under staffed and at 6pm, the menu availability was so reduced, our server, when she finally turned up, had to take our menus away to cross through everything that we could not order. She did not know the menu and disappeared for a long time to establish what was in the ‘plant burger’. Our table was in a traffic corridor between the back garden and the loos. The food when it finally arrived was ‘ok’. We waited so long to get our bill that we finally stood at the till so we could get out of there. We will never revisit.

I understand the frustration and stress because the pub is so obviously understaffed but as the customer i shouldn’t be stressed out or spoken to in a rude manner. None of the employees care how they come across, making rude hand gestures, sighing or ROLLING THEIR EYES. Listen if you are going to charge me 7,90 for a pint at least be civil. I suggest you go over to the cyclist pub and have a look at how the staff acts there and take notes. Clearly a management issue, you need at least 5 more people at the bar and in the kitchen!!!!!

Drinks only (looking forward to visit the restaurant), but my goodness this place is good. Atmosphere is wonderful and just puts a smile on your face.

Good pints of Guinness served in true Irish fashion all piled up on the bar ready and waiting so event though its busy you get served relatively quickly. Go upstairs to the dining rooms where service is excellent and very knowledgeable. The meat is cooked to perfection and great cuts are on the menu. The Pea and ham soups and also Scallops a must for starters.

I sent this directly in an email on 19/11/23 but it has been ignored. Therefore I am making it public in the hope of receiving a response… Hello, I’m writing to you about my experience at The Devonshire this afternoon. My sister and I have just left abruptly due to the disappointment we felt, and quite frankly I expect a full refund. We arrived at 2pm to a sea of unwelcoming faces behind the bar and were seated, much to their inconvenience it would seem. Before I go on, I would like to highlight the only positive element of our experience which was the person who took our order and we would hate for this member of staff to be associated with the rest of our dissatisfaction. They had braided hair. Firstly, we waited a very long time for our first pints, both of which arrived warm and flat. The lovely person I mentioned previously was very apologetic and ensured they were replaced quickly. Our second pints were good and this person was sure to check this. We waited 50 minutes for our roast beef and cauliflower cheese to arrive. In that time we witnessed other members of staff unsubtly mocking one of the tables nearby and then felt uncomfortable approaching anyone other than our original waiter. The food arrived and after the wait, our expectations were high. It is not an exaggeration to say that the parsnip and potatoes were the only enjoyable elements. The beef was grey and tough, the Yorkshire pudding was cold and dry and the cauliflower in the cauliflower cheese was simply raw. My beef was simply inedible and impossible to chew. We both had two fork fulls and instantly felt it wasn’t worth it. My sister is moving to Canada tomorrow, so this was our final meal and was somewhat a celebration. We looked at each other and agreed we wanted to go elsewhere. We abruptly asked for the bill with our plates still full. The bill arrived and it was £76.60…. An absolute mockery and not something I thought I was going to have to pay. Having already made a comment about our first pints being flat and feeling somewhat intimidated by every female member of staff, we did not want to make a scene. I would like to add that I do not usually complain in this manner, and had the bill not come to this and it hadn’t been a celebration, we might have grinned and bared it. Three members of staff saw that we were paying without touching our food and not a single one seemed to care. I felt that it wasn’t my job to make them aware that we were unhappy, as it was blatantly obvious. They continued to charged me the full bill and quite laughably said “I hope you enjoyed” as we left with sour faces. We are currently en route to another establishment to have the farewell meal we hoped to have at The Devonshire. I had truly hoped that they would have the awareness to recognise their customers discomfort, and the fact that I was still charged the full bill without question is frankly appalling. I truly do expect a full refund and I look forward to hearing your response to this. I would like to reiterate that I’m not someone to make complaints like this, but you absolutely need to know the experience we had. I will not be returning, but I hope for the sake of your future customers that management take this into account. I have attached a photograph of our bill and full plates. The photograph of the beef is flattering. If this complaint seems like a one off to you… I feel it’s very important that if you are charging the prices you’re charging, you are delivering a welcoming service and insuring your customers leave with expectations met. I must also add that since both of us were violently unwell through the following night and day, and I am 100% certain this was due to the beef, as it didn’t taste right at all. I look forward to hearing your response on this.

The Devonshire was, unfortunately, a very average experience. We were greeted by a member of staff and took a seat at our table just after 17:00. Our waitress came quite promptly, and took our drinks order, but the drinks took around 10 minutes to arrive (it was only one bottle of wine and a lemonade, and we had to chase up for the lemonade). We then went to order food, and they had run out of quite a few items (which we weren't made aware of when seated). We were told we should have come earlier, but the 17:00 slot is the first one that is bookable, on the website and I secured this well in advance. I also believe if you're working on a booking system, then you should be able to anticipate the number of orders / items to have in stock and plan accordingly. Nonetheless, we went ahead and ordered what we could, but had to wait nearly 35 mins for any food to arrive. Our starters came, and they were nice, however we then had to wait another 20 minutes for our roast to arrive, and this was average at best. The potatoes were deep fried and hard to bite into, the cauliflower cheese was burnt, and the pork was fatty. We decided not to have a dessert, because we simply didn't want to wait any longer. We waited another 25 minutes for someone to come with the bill, and left as soon as we could after that. Overall, the food was average and the service was slow. We would only return for a quick drink.

Had been here a few weeks ago and thought the Sunday roasts looked lovely. Booked to go yesterday with high expectations and left very disappointed. Where do I start - slow service, took 45 minutes from being seated to getting our meal. When it did arrive, it was Luke warm, beef was very fatty and the cabbage that was supposed to come with it was 5 leaf’s at most! Very underwhelming and tasteless. Not cheap either, definitely not value for money or somewhere I would return to, Give it a miss, far better places in the area to get your Sunday roast!

Went here tonight for a meal with friends. The food was really lovely and the wine was great, however the COVID measures they had in place were not acceptable. There was hand sanitiser on arrival, you had to leave through a different door through the back and they made you take the cutlery off a tray. They were the only measures taken to make us feel safe. None of the staff were wearing masks/visors, and whilst I know this is not essential, it’s also the first place I’ve been to where they haven’t been wearing masks so it felt strange and unsafe. They asked to take a payment card from us in order for us to be able to keep a tab on our table (even though we were sat inside) which I found really strange and also completely un-hygienic considering they were touching our payment card and probably putting it with lots of other peoples cards. It was also extremely busy inside and the tables were certainly not distanced far enough apart and no screens were put up for the people whose tables were close together. The toilets didn’t feel clean at all and generally the whole place felt like the least COVID-safe place I’ve been since restrictions have been lifted. It’s such a shame because the food was lovely but I’ve been to other places that have made me feel so much more comfortable and safe whilst eating out.
