We had family over and trying to find somewhere for a light lunch. The Nightingale has a lovely frontage and always appears welcoming with their selection of cakes on the counter to welcome you. We pretty much all opted for the falafel and spinach wrap which came with chips (crunchy) and humous - delicious. Only downside was one of the meals which arrived much later than the rest.

The muffin was not toasted, felt raw. The spinach in the florentine was also cold. Eggs under the factory made mayonnaise tasting sauce was hard boiled rather than poached. Combining this with hefty prices I wouldn't recommend this place.

Went to the Nightingale ( Balham) for a coffee and a bit of cake. For that purpose it suited us fine. It's been open a while now and the interior is nicely decked out in an old fashioned way i.e. not brassy etc. Looking at the menu the range is not vast and it's more a place for a snack. I have some sympathy with the comments of other reviewers regarding the breakfasts - I'd had one several years ago and it was okay but very pricey. I don't know if it's run by the same people now though. With the likes of Milk or even indeed the chinese Spicy noodle cafe ( further down the road) competition is fierce in this enclave of South London so I don't think the place can afford to be complacent.

Looks nice form the outside, very dark inside Balham Style.Asked for the table to be wiped after given menus. The Nightingale Breakfast at £7.50 ; 2 x fried eggs, baked beans (luke warm) , 3 mushrooms, one half tomato, 2 x 'organic' sausages (which taste spicy) , NO bacon, 10 chips, 2 pieces of toast (toasted only on one side) with curdled butter in pots. Bacon is not served on query why….'we don't serve it'?Hot drinks not included in breakfast price.Nice decor would look great if cleaned n fresh. Filthy in loo, seat detached off , nice old fashioned scale but covered in dirt.Wil not revisit but walk the short distance to either Balham or Tooting Bec cafes.

The welcome and communication is muted .The vibe is dank and everywhere grimey.Had a breakfast which was not hot but cool and just about cooked despite the place having just a few customers inside (there are outside tables overlooking Balham High Road)? The breakfast items are listed on menu and the sausages are listed as "organic' but when the breakfast came found these did not taste organic; they were brown reddish inside and tasted spicy (they are not pork sausages) and this fact is is not listed on menu? Poor especially for the price charged. They do not take card for payment is is not value here so will be walking the 3 minutes further into Balham for many other choices.

This review is for the one near Victoria as there seems to be some confusion about the location! I went in as it was relatively quiet compared to other places in the area on a weekday lunchtime. The café itself is quite quirky and a bit different to the usual chain coffee shops.I had an apple and cinnamon cake (which didn't come with cream or ice cream) with a hot chocolate. The service was quick, the cake and chocolate nice enough but nothing special. The check was £9 though I suppose it is in a touristy place. I didn't try the hot food selection.

On the way back from a tour of the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace we passed by this cafe. This unassuming little cafe had no prices displayed and no menu but a sign outside offered a take away coffee and cake at a very reasonable price so all seemed ok.My wife and I had a pot of tea each and she had a cake. Two teas ans a cake for over £10 in a relatively scruffy little cafe takes some beating. Well, our friends managed to match us by having a hot chocolate and two cokes for a little over £9. I did not know what it had all cost until later or I would have complained at the prices.Fortunately I am unlikely to ever pass by again.

One of the young children wanted boiled egg and soldiers but got 2 eggs rolling around on a plate! Omelette was flat and unappetising. Full breakfast looked and tasted as if all the food had been kept warm and not freshly cooked and served with flabby chips!! Very disappointed as a couple of years ago the food was great. This is my favourite cafe in the Balham/Tooting Bec area, and there are about 10. I think it used to be a dairy and has a lot of character due to its exposed brick walls and rails. You can sit here for hours typing and drinking coffee, plus there is a little back garden. It is a pleasure to sit here and drink and eat, although. I only eat here occasionally (breakfast usually) which usually tastes good. They are a bit slow to serve sometimes but it is a busy place. They were very good when I ordered a whole cake recently, supplying a very good chocolate cake for £25. Long may the cafe continue.

(a lot. but is is Central London and I do like French Cheese...) So the bread was a bit like cold toast, and the cheese was: . a couple of small sticks of Wensleydale, a small rectangle of rubbery Red Leicester (like the 'portions' you get with crackers on a train) and some sort of white cheese with Fruit (origin unknown, but probably not French). Flatly refused to pay £11 for that, manageress offered me I'll take £2 off, OK? Er, no! Paid £5, accepted with very bad grace, and left. Fruit salad (small bowl of chopped Apple etc.) may have been OK, didn't try it.Avoid!

Went for Sunday Breakfast. Cafe looked great. Was served immediately but somehow it just misses. Tea should have been served in a pot rather than a tea bag in a cup. Full Breakfasts looked good but the organic sausages were beef and a little strange tasting The tomatoes were very salty and the overall taste wasn't as good as it looked. However, get points for serving some excellent granary toast and HP Sauce. With only one serving and one cooking, it was difficult for them to handle the demand. Two more only arrived at 10am. With just a few adjustments, the place could be so much better.

Oh my God. Where do I start?I feel it's my duty to warn others of this place. DO NOT BE DUPED- the lovely looking exterior is absolutely NOT met with any kind of standards inside. ....We had 2 meals here. Both BEYOND TERRIBLE. The quiche was old, stale, dry, and upon trying it, we realised it was one of the old ones they have out for clearly days on the counter. I've had many great meals out, some not so good, but one bite into that quiche I was genuinely, genuinely disgusted- it tasted like old, stale fat that had been reheated and the feta cheese inside was very obviously NOT fresh. The other meal. Was some kind of fried old toasted bread that tasted re-heated, or as if it had been pan-toasted and then toasted an extra time once cold. The goats cheese on this was also very very inedibly out of date. The coffee was ok, but how could anybody get coffee wrong? The food is certainly not cooked in 'British' ways as it claims to be and certainly does NOT meet British requirements for only serving fresh in-date food to poor suckers who wander in for a nice lunch and get given STALE, REHEATED INEDIBLE FOOD.I have been genuinely offended to have been given this- to eat. We were horrified.

Just returned from an overnight stay in London which was perfect, apart from our final port of call, The Nightingale. We ordered feta and spinach quiche and salad - the quiche was served warm from the microwave (pastry in a microwave!!!), and although it is almost impossible to make feta and spinach completely tasteless, they managed this feat effortlessly. The drinks, a bottle of ginger beer and lemonade were ridiculously overpriced at 3.90 each. When we came to pay we were told that they didn't take any cards and when we asked how we should possibly have known this in advance we were told that it was stated on the menu - we seem to have missed this small print. London? 2014? No cards? Joke?

After deciding not to go to the cafe at Buckingham Palace we chose this place as it looked quaint and my husband and I do like to support independent establishments. We ordered 2 teas, 2 coffees and 2 soft drinks, 2 muffins, 2 carrot cakes and 1 pecan pie (minute slice) ...all was ok until it came to paying. I asked if they took cards....no they don't, not even a debit card...in this day and age in London!!!! So I asked how much I owed and she wrote £47.43 on a piece of paper and plonked it in front of me. I was shocked. I know this is London but, having read another review from 2013, I now know that I was not the only person to be ripped off. The coffee was about £3 on the menu but I didn't look at cake prices. They obviously were huge. It bugged me so much later that evening but I wish I had asked for an itemised bill....I will if that happens to me again but it won't be there. I didn't like the attitude of the lady taking the money...no charm at all and no please or thank you. Nice staff make a huge difference. It was disappointing on what was my birthday family day out...that's why I didn't make a fuss at the time.

I popped into The Nightingale Café today for a late breakfast and ordered The Nightingale Breakfast that advertised itself has having Organic Sausages but what I was served were NOT Breakfast Sausages but Merguez (Moroccan) Sausages, which are very dark in colour and flavour! While I have been to Morocco many times and love the cuisine I do NOT want nor expect to be served these sausages as part of my breakfast! Unfortunately, most of the rest of the breakfast was flavoured by these dark red spicy sausages. The Nightingale Café should either serve a traditional Moroccan breakfast (delicious) or a Full English Breakfast but whatever it is then PLEASE be clear on the menu exactly what it is your are offering as the Menu reads as if it were a Full English! Also too there were a few chipped potatoes on my plate that were not included on the menu and they looked like the leftovers from another meal (while I am sure they were not that is what it looked like), and if I wanted chips I would have ordered them! On the up side my poached eggs were done to perfection and the granary toast delicious.Otherwise, The Nightingale Café's décor is lovely, and the food was cooked beautifully and presented well. We were in London for a weekend trip and had seats for Billy Elliot at the nearby theatre. We were looking for somewhere for lunch and after wandering around for 30 minutes and finding everything closed we stumbled across here. It's in the premises of a former chemist and still has all the original fittings ..... Very bijou. Tables can be close together if busy but don't let that put you off. If you order a tatin or a sandwich you get a free bowl of soup which comes in a beautiful little China bowl ..... it's a small taster portion but big enough as the chicken Caesar sandwich we ordered was massive. It came on excellent toasted sourdough bread and must have had about half a fresh cooked chicken on it with a great dressing which wasn't overpowering. If you order soup you get a substantial portion and more of that wonderful bread. When the waitress accidentally cleared away my partly full glass of mineral water it was immediately replaced with a full bottle and a charming apology with no charge. I'll definitely be back here ...... but don't tell too many people as this is a little gem. Best Caesar I've tasted!

We had an early morning tea in the palace grounds and it cost 16 pounds...if I had paid 21 pounds in the palace grounds I wouldn't question it, however a cafe on a main road shouldn't be charging those prices, conveniently prices weren't on the menu so a lesson was learnt here.

I thought it was perfect, although my boyfriend thought the portion was a little small. Smoked salmon was very high quality. Next table's cooked breakfast looked good. Sausages looked high-end. Faff when it came to paying though. They don't have a card machine, so you have to pay by cash. A sign, or heads up on the way in, would have been helpful. Selected the Chargrilled chicken salad on soda bread plus a small bottle of sparkling water. It was made from scratch and so i needed to be patient. There is a quaint courtyard at the back and it was one of those rare sunny days and so i was happy to wait reading my Metro. Sometimes grilled chicken can be dry and stringy, this was the complete opposite, succulent; well seasoned and grilled to perfection! The small side salad had a tangy vinaigrette and complimented the sandwich to a tee. I had no intention to have dessert but the 'homemade' chocolate cake was too tempting and certainly left me satisfied! The service was friendly, the decor had lots of character, and given the quality of my meal i would happily say value for money!Next time i am in the area i will happily re-visit!

Came across this cafe when wandering about London and found ourselves hungry. This was the first we came across when walking down from Hyde Park so went in. The three of us ordered a bowl of soup each and this was served promptly from the small kitchen. A large bowl of soup with a small piece of soda bread cost £7, not exactly cheap but I think that is just to be expected in London, especially the area it is in. Not that I count the pennies while on holiday, but just mentioned this as a warning to others who might! It is a very small, but quirky and comfortable cafe with friendly staff. The bill for three soups, two soft drinks and a tea was just over £30, a bit more expensive than a normal lunch anywhere else, but we were starving so would have paid anything! If in the area, this is a nice place to stop by.

A great cafe come coffee house with the full range of meals on offer and some others to boot. I made my way through two massive fry ups a glass of pure orange juice just how the sungods intended and a banana and strawberry smoothie. It was bliss I couldn't care what the rest had but we all left with big smiles and full tummies. Our elder statesman even caught forty winks on the sofa while pretending to read the paper. Not to be taken as a complaint but i was surprised when it turned out they didn't take plastic (i do not know if this was just a case of the machine being down), fortunately we had just coughed up owed monies to the youngest in our presence so we promptly took it back and thanked them.

Had a lovely brunch today with my daughter. I had the veggie rowers with delicious Cacklebean eggs, mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, spinach , halloumi and sourdough toast. Tomatoes were very sweet and eggs super delicious too. My daughter’s new turkish was excellent too, served with coffee and matcha latte.
