Lunchtime visit for 4.warm welcome from staff who showed us to table for 6 so plenty room to spread out, by the window so great views of the Thames. Quickly offered water, left for few minutes to ponder menu, water served, questions about menu explained, order taken and wine delivered. Waitress very friendly, attentive and professional. Starters served after about 10 minutes which left time to chat, admire views. Parsnip and apple soup was lovely, 2 of had Bavette steak, winter greens and frites served hot, good amount of steak which was very tasty and fat/rustle free.Asked for time before dessert served, Eton Mess and Orange cake well recommended.Thoroughly enjoyed our food, great place for lunch.Understand restaurant to close for two months at beginning of January for Rick Stein makeover, will be interesting to see changes made, new menu and how different the Depot will be when reopens.

Stopped for lunch at The Depot as it is on the Thames path and would let a well behaved couple and their dog in the bar area. Staff very polite and service was good. We had a mains dinner and a glass of beer/wine. Food was excellent and served very quickly. This was good for us as we had to push on with the walk and had enough of the dog dribbling down my leg! Hopefully your time at this restaurant will be as good as ours.

Very disappointing, other than the location on the river the food is very average and way over priced. Spinach starter which was a dry bed of leaves with even drier breadcrumbs and some pieces of avocado and blue cheese, completely didn't work (no olive oil). Main was a slab of beef rib eye with oven chips and some lettuce leaves...this dish was over £23!!! These prices one would expect to pay at a top class restaurant not at a pub. Oh and to top it off they stick 12.5% service at the end so, not good unless you're after a simple pint with a good view.

We keep coming back because it is such a comfortable place with excellent food and service. I think this is why they have survived and thrived over the last 30 years. At our visit last week, I had steamed mussels with shallots, garlic, parsley, white wine & cream, which is an old favourite, as their white sauce is absolutely delicious. Winter berry Eton mess with vanilla ice cream and toasted almonds was generous and had a wonderfully satisfying mix of tastes. They have a great selection of drinks and also serve lovely mocktails. Ask for the tables next to the windows when you book for the great river views. (I keep hoping to see Stanley Tucci here as he is local and would definitely like this place ;-)).

4 of us for a family lunch on Bank Holiday Monday. Great location, easy parking and plenty of charming and helpful staff. Sadly, probably my fault for choosing mussels on a Monday in August ( and over a bank holiday) my main course was nearly inedible. Probably ate 10 % of the over cooked chalky molluscs- even that was too many! But ... Everyone else had good food. Excellent salads, great fish and steaks. Went on to choose Eton Mess - another disaster. Not a raspberry in sight. Blueberries ( most odd) and a few mushy pieces of strawberry. Meringue tasted stale and the whole thing was far too sweet and sickly. Other puddings were ok. So was this bad luck? Bad choosing or are standards at this 30 year old restaurant slipping? It is in a great location, it has great staff but somehow the wow! factor has gone.

I first visited The Depot around 1988 and it is still going strong – a great restaurant on the river in Mortlake, very close to Barnes. We enjoyed the set lunch on this occasion, which offered very good value and good food – in my case, mussels followed by chicken with risotto. There is a nice choice of wines with one or two at the sensible (lower) end of the price spectrum.I really had no criticisms other than that our waitress said she would tell us when we should come to the table – we were having a drink outside. She didn't but we went to the table anyway, only to find our food arriving before we sat down. The outside area could do with a little tender loving care.I strongly recommend this restaurant and will no return on many occasions.

Had a lovely evening here last night. We booked online the day before our visit and then phoned to ask if we could get a table with a river view. Unfortunately all riverside tables were booked. When we arrived we were taken to a table WITH a riverview and so that was an immediate massive bonus. I would say that to make the most of your visit it is probably best to book in advance and ask for a table with a view. It really is too good to miss for the sake of a bit of forward planning! With or without the view the food and service is executed to a very high standard. We did not go for the cheaper options and I felt that by the end the price charged was a fair reflection of the quality and skill delivered in the three courses which we were served. I ordered the sea bass which was faultless however when I saw (and very sneakily tasted) the Cote de Boeuf that my husband had ordered I wished that I had ordered the same as it really was AMAZING ! Starters were also excellent, I had Foie gras and my husband went for the oysters. The oysters really were very special and certainly worth every penny of the premium paid! My husband and I conceded that of all the restaurants we've visited over the past year that there are two that we would revisit, The Depot is one of them, the other being the A La Carte menu served at the Petersham Hotel in Richmond. This gives a rough idea of what to expect! I doubt that anyone could be disappointed here :)

I have visited The Depot three times now and on all 3 occasions I haven't had a 'bad' experience, however, all visits have been different from the last. The Pub is situated right on the River Thames in Barnes, it's picturesque & quiet. The sunlight during the early evening floods the area with a warm glow, perfect for an 'end of day' drink or dinner. Absolute perfection. The first experience with The Depot was quite frankly beautiful. The service was friendly, attentive but not overbearing - the staff are well learned regarding the menu and were extremely helpful. The dinner was a surprise, I'm not one for eating all three courses (deserts aren't my 'thing') The dinner menu was simple and exactly what I wanted; good British food. Each course was better than the last, the food arrived within good time and the staff made sure that any requests were made.In all the dinner we had was perfect.Cons.Like with anything in life there's bound to be something that doesn't quite fit well.. The Depot maybe great for a quiet dinner, however, where it lacks is its Lunch menu. The menu, for my taste, seems extremely heavy - nothing light on the menu, very heavy based lunches that are suited for dinners, for example Duck with celeriac and gravy - not something you want on a nice summers day. To be fair, there were a few options that seemed light, however, I believe that a menu should change and keep in touch with the seasons. The seating area is extremely cramped! We were wedged into two other tables, crowded and just a general uncomfortable feeling. The seats are tiny and stiff, it's not something you want to lounge in and take your time - its like they WANT you to eat and go. Unfortunately I only stayed for mains and quickly asked for my bill as I needed to breathe!! I've never felt so uncomfortable in such a nice place! What is with this new trend of fitting as many tables into a space? You want to optimize business but it's at the expense of the customer - it seems the company rather bring in the profit and ignore customer satisfaction. Sure, the food is beautiful, the setting is amazing, the staff are polite and attentive... that doesn't mean you can skimp on the rest, a GOOD restaurant ticks all the boxes, and not the majority. My one concern and request - give people space! Let me WANT to stay for desert every time I visit. For the record... I'm ONLY 5'9!!I would recommend this place but will suggest try visiting when the place isn't busy - which is hard because The Depot is, quite rightly, popular.

Came here with friends on a very busy Friday evening. We'd booked ahead and requested a river-side table, which we got. There's not a lot of space in the 'conservatory' area and since it overlooks the river it does get a bit crowded and can therefore be a bit on the noisy side. I had the souffle to start which was delicious, my husband had kidneys on toast and really enjoyed them. We both had steak which was perfectly cooked and a really generous portion size, I couldn't finish mine. There's a good selection on the menu, featuring quite a bit of fish and a veggie option or two and some starters can be ordered as large plates too. The service was brilliant all night, informative, attentive and friendly, even though they were rushed off their feet!

Friends first brought me here in January and, wow, the food was good. It had all the attributes too of a river location in Barnes, a very pretty and very green corner of London that seems so at odds with hip-chic-urban London or the London of museums and monuments. But, I digress. The dining room is bright and spacious and minimal, with exposed brick walls and large windows and polished wooden tables; there is a conservatory that, so close to the Thames, seems to bring the river lapping at your feet. The place had a cosy 1920’s time-capsule feel where you could wile away in dreamy contemplation, lingering as tables emptied, not wanting ever to leave in the advancing afternoon shadow. It occurred to me at the time how lucky for the locals to have a place like this on their doorstep and the seduction was such that I was determined to return and return I did.Part 1: The excitement of my return on a lively Bank Holiday then was palpable: beat, beat, beat went the heart and Old Man River purred and bubbled. Yet my reacquainting with the place was to prove the theory that holiday romances are never quite the same on a second visit and was to last all of the 10 minutes it took to bring the starters. There was a lentil soup thick as mortar that required steely determination to wade through, a deliciously sounding but hugely disappointing scallops with pancetta and black pudding that looked more blanched than seared as if the combination had seen a ghost and done a runner from the kitchen and, to complete the nightmare, an ugly slab, pardon, “parfait”, of foie gras and chicken liver that appeared more flung-on the plate, than lovingly placed, in the petrified company of a few scattered leaves. Part 2: The thing with nightmares, so goes the cliché, is that they’re recurring. The main course, saved only by a tasty fish cake with poached egg topped with hollandaise, was a mere of all cauchemars: the marquee “cote de boeuf” (£23 + 12.5%) was white as a sheet, a sorry rendition of flash-grilling, that came with curdled – I kid not- béarnaise that had to be returned and oven ready, sorry, “triple-cooked”, chips. I have an issue with the modern (industrial) chip served in supposedly “smart” restaurants, but that will have to wait for another report. Suffice to say that at £4.50 (including 12.5%) I figured we might have expected better then factory-made but with the carpaccio of tuna looking as if it had had a slashing by Freddy Krueger, figuring out chip from frite was the least of our worries.Part 3: The bill came in at £145 for four teetotallers, i.e., without alcohol (2 cokes, 2 coffees and a bottle of sparkling to be precise) and no puddings. The puddings tempted us but, suffering the debilitating trauma of post-gastronomic syndrome, a landslide vote decided against. Had we “pushed the boat out” (3 courses + wine), it would likely have taken the bill to £60 a head which –based on the evidence- would have been a travesty not just a nightmare.

Finally opted for mussels. Not the best. It seems that they had probably run out of that too as the portion was miserly when divided between the two of us ! The fish cake with the egg hollandaise - well the egg was hard boiled rather than runny. It was replaced but the fish cake was rock hard and over cooked. The tuna portions were miserly. The pasta was average. Okay let's give them a break, the chips were good as was the chocolate flourless pudding!

Been coming here for years. Always great. This time they lost our reservation - had us down for March! but hey. We still got a great table for the 4 of us in the main dining room. Adult daughters had roast pork & roast beef - both with Yorkshire Pud!!! I had moules 'er outdoors had mushroom risotto sans Parmesan 'cos she's Vegan. Lemon posset was great finished off with Baileys in coffee. Yum! Service was delightful, wine excellent and the whole lunch very reasonably priced. We will be back

The Depot is perfectly situated for calming views of the Thames - so try to get a window table if you can. The interior is casual bistro in style, quite atmospheric when busy. The menu reads well, the food is modern British for want of a better description & the set-price menu is surprisingly good value. The food is a huge improvement on what it was but still sounds better in writing than it looks on the plate. Starter salads of beetroot, squash & goats cheese, were huge but soup was served in very ungenerous bowls & was far too gloopy. Risottos were stodgy rather than creamy; although we ate it all, it was ultimately rather uninspiring. There's a good selection of wines by the glass as well as bottle; service is welcoming & eager to please.Overall, this isn't a place to come for a special night out, but for a casual weeknight supper, it just about ticks the box.

Have dined at the Depot many times and loved it - however this time it was disappointing. It was a birthday celebration with family. I recommended the steak which I had had once before when it was melt in the mouth. However this time it was stringy, tough and almost inedible. (having recommended it, I was therefore embarrassed). The service was slow and intermittent - we had to get up and try to find a waitress and we were told they were busy. But this is their problem not the paying customers'.

We had a splendid meal here last night. The service was good and friendly, if not exactly prompt... but we weren't in a rush. The wine was good - £28 for a good Malbec (Raza, if memory serves right). The tuna starter was light and fresh. The cod with linguini could have done with a bit of chilli to lift the flavour. The fish was lovely, but I felt the rest of it needed a bit of a flavour lift. NT had the steak... which I shall be having next time I come here. We have lived locally for a long time, but have never made it around for a meal. We shall be back. £88 all in, including tip and a bottle of wine. The service is very friendly and welcoming. We shall be back.

A little late in writing a review, as we are now into January, but I felt that it shouldn't go un-noted how delightful our Christmas Day lunch was at The Depot, and what that meant to us in making our day so special. As we were a tad early for our booking we were instantly offered Champagne at the bar whilst they prepared our table. Just after our first course, we were then approached and given the option to move tables as one had become available with a river view. For me this kind of approach meant that although the staff were so obviously rushed off their feet and incredibly busy, on such an important day of the year they still took time to note what is important for their customers, and how to make them feel relaxed and at home. Apart from which the food was delicious........and we were also offered after dinner drinks on the house. A memorable day for all of us. Thankyou.

Staff booking in and serving ask very professional and polite and didn't try and rush us off.I had the fishcake in hollandaise with spinach - excellent, one of the best I'd had, just the right amount of sauce. My friend had the Sunday toast - heroes portion, all excellent, apart from the crackling was so hard it wasn't eadable, despite being really tasty.Overall really good, and decent value for that part of London.

I have to say, a lovely pub by all means. The staff are very nice, friendly and attentive (but not too much, just right) the food served is clearly well cooked. I did not have roast beef myself due to being vegetarian. There was absolutely nothing i could eat on the menu - I resorted to a small pumpkin salad which I don't even really like. I tell a lie, there was risotto which we veggies like to eat every time we go out... The beef roast cost roughly £16. The roast consisted of: one very small Yorkshire, two decent slices of beef, 2 potatoes, lots of red cabbage, carrots yes, and I am not exaggerating, the end stubs of baby carrots, roughly 3-4 stubs. I was actually shocked. To sum up, a random little pile of watercress - (I don't know) as mentioned before, whilst the food served was well cooked, the meal was very overpriced for what was served. A huge rip off. Very disappointing. The whole thing just lacked. I may be vegetarian but I don't want to dine out on a Sunday and eat side salads.

We recently visited the Depot to have our annual group Christmas meal and ordered a bottle of Prosecco, only to be told there wasn't any! During the run up to Christmas----- this is ridiculous to run out and it was only 8pm! No attempt was made to rectify the situation ---- send someone over to the road to the local Sainsbutys perhaps? No, because customers don't seem to matter. The service overall was pretty poor. The food didn't arrive at the same time and so some people had to sit watching theirs getting cold. Nobody came to ask if we'd enjoyed it------ the soup was lukewarm, the partridge so tough that it was impossible to cut----- and so we hadn't! Nobody came to take a pudding order or offer more drinks and so we went home instead. We refused to pay the full service charge, but no one came to ask why.Very disappointing.

This fries was a bit over cooked but that's a small detail . must be a nice place for Sunday lunch close to the lovely Thames .XArnaud

I would be delighted to recommend this restaurant for three reasons: the food is usually very good, the setting is outstanding with wonderful views of the Thames and the staff are exceptional. We are quite regular customers and have always enjoyed it but recently went with friends one of whom embarrassed us with her criticisms and rudeness. The staff were absolutely superb in difficult circumstances. Although the cooking is generally good to excellent, there are occasional blips and the steak can be dodgy, but fish is always a good choice and the bread, when they make it themselves, can be heaven.

I visited the place for the first time in some years. I have been there for lunch but this was the first time for dinner. The first thing was the lighting, or should I say, lack of it. I had to use the electric candle, not ever a real one, to read the wine list: I wish I hadn't. I had paid less for a bottle of wine in Soho, just a few days before.A couple joined us, at the next table, and they used mobile phones to read the menu.Food was good, but the overall price was a bit of a let down.If you are dinning there, take a decent amount of money. Oh yes, and a torch.

I’m never sure about restaurants with views. Too often, the scenery seems to be compensating for something the kitchen lacks. Depot was no exception, the food was good but not great. My risotto was slightly undercooked and a little bland, my plumb frangipane was a bit too jammy for my taste. The service was very good however, and this restaurant is certainly popular. If you’re lucky enough to get a window seat, then don’t expect a lot of room – it’s like flying on easyJet: tighter than a tenor’s trousers.

My friend and I had a really nice meal here and we got a river view table on request which is definitely worth it. Our steaks were cooked to perfection and we both had eton mess for dessert which was simple but refreshing. I thought the wine list was very good as well. I did think the service was a bit odd though. One waitress in particular was very pushy in trying to get us to order a much cheaper steak, which I thought was odd given that would be the opposite of up-selling! But I would visit again and would recommend it if you're in the area.

Visited as a group of four plus a young child. Did not have a table booked and was told we could have a table but would have to leave by 8.30, giving us an hour and a half to eat. Took a long time to take our order and for the food to arrive therefore ended up feeling rushed to finish our meal. Not child friendly with no child seating available. The food was ok but nothing special and the portion sizes were on the small side. Although nothing really wrong just felt with more care and attention the experience could have been much better.

We visited The Depot on a Monday evening during August. We had a table booked and arrived shortly after 8:30pm. I had personally been worried that the restaurant would be quiet on a Monday but, I was pleasantly surprised that is was quite busy when we arrived. We waited at the desk for a few seconds, and then a passing waitress stopped and asked our name. My boyfriend happened to be standing in view of the reservations screen and saw that following our booking, there was only one more table due. The waitress took us through to the restaurant (which was half empty) and showed us to a table right next to 4 other diners. We asked if we could be seated elsewhere and she had to go back to check the reservations! We suggested a table of 4, which she did allow us to sit at- but made us feel like it was a big effort for her. Overall, we didn't feel particularly welcomed. We ordered some water from a different waiter, which arrived quickly from a very bubbly British waiter. We took our time looking at the menu and choosing some wine, but still felt like we had to get the waiters attention to order. When he came to take our order, he said 'Did anyone tell you these is no lamb?' - luckily neither of us wanted lamb, but it would have been nice to be told this when we were seated. He took our order, but I don't think he wrote it down. Our wine arrived quickly and was presented well. However, water and wine were not topped up by the waiting staff after this. The food I cannot fault, I had the tuna carpaccio to start which was delicious and my boyfriend had the foie gras which he enjoyed equally. We both had chateaubriand for main course, both were cooked well and served with some tasty chips and lovely béarnaise sauce. As well as a decent salad. We did also order spinach- but this didn't turn up. By the point we couldn't be bothered to mention it to our waiter. Although I'm sure he would have been apologetic and we would have received it very quickly, that wasn't the point. We took our time with the main course, so that we were able to enjoy the wine and food, as well as the relaxing surroundings. However, we were asked by 3 different waiters if we had finished, when we stopped for a pause. We felt as though we were being rushed, as other tables around us slowly started to leave. One waiter (I think a commis) who turned it around for us, was an Italian guy who gave us the dessert menus. He firstly apologised for his accent and then started chatting to my boyfriend. He was really friendly and clearly cared about his job, although it is not his chosen career. I have visited The Depot on a number of occasions, and have always enjoyed the food. Last May, I attended a wedding here and the food was delicious, a tricky task when serving over 100 people at once. I have also bought my parents here on a couple of occasions when they have been visiting. The location, ambience and food is just right, but I always feel there is something lacking with the service. A bit more of a welcome and a few more smiles are needed.

Last time I came to the Depot was probably 20 years ago… I love the location especially and a table by the river is terrific. But the food and service was disappointing for the high prices. My cod sat on mustard mash which was much too strong and my almond tart was very dry and served with Cornish cream - it needed an injection of moisture. The service was poor and the waitress inattentive. I had to keep trying to attract her attention and, with an elderly companion, I would have hoped for a more caring approach. I didn't feel like paying the 15% service charge so asked that it be removed. It's a very pretty restaurant but at £50 for two courses for two people and only tap water to drink, this is not good value for money.

Two of us walked along the river to this hugely popular restaurant overlooking a quiet stretch of the Thames. It was full of families finishing early meals, ladies who dined (rather than lunched), and middle aged couples with mediterranean tans. Asparagus and quails' eggs, and moules to start with, mackerel fillet with tomatoes and an elderflower and citrus reduction, and chicken in a red wine reduction were all spot on. Puddings were rib-sticking, and the rich chocolate pudding was especially appreciated. We washed it down with a bottle of Picpoul and were very content.

I came with my wife and daughter, for a spontaneous meal Saturday evening. Depot is one of our favourite places to dine in the area and we've been a few times. Food and service works very well here. Food is always spot on and service is always exceptional. We got a window seat as we were early when we shouldn't have but service as usual is good. After fixing our uneven table our starters arrived which was nice, simple and tasty. For main course, I ordered the leg of lamb steak medium, my wife the blade of beef and fish cake for my daughter. The other two meals were very good but my meat was the over cooked and while it wasn't a huge issue, the chef that came out didn't do himself justice. Rather than apologising, he was telling me that for him it was perfect and in the west end medium means medium rare. I didn't appreciate being told that I didn't know the difference between the two cooking temperatures and secondly if I wanted to speak to the chef I would of asked for him. He might not be but I found him rude and defensive, who shouldn't put himself in an awkward situation. It isn't a bad thing for the chef to venture away from the kitchen but he must be able to deal in the correct manner with guests. Maybe he should leave that to the service team, it's what they do and very well.

Pretentious and inconsistent staffI visited the depot on my day off as it is located in an area my family had lived in for generations but have been priced out due to the inflated housing prices in London. The location beside the river is apparently a draw-card these days. The bar staff were friendly enough and one of the female English waitresses was very nice and made recommendations. I enjoyed the well-presented and appetising food and found the atmosphere rather clinical. On a sunny day the location adjacent to the river was pleasant enough and only ruined by the loud tones of a group of ageing “ladies who lunch” who seemed to have the need to brag about the exploits of their various grandchildren as well as making racist comments about various ethnicities. When I attempts to settle my account one male member of staff turned his back on me and proceeded to be very rude to a lovely young waitress for no apparent reason. One does not need such conduct and it speaks volumes for the mentality of the perpetrator. The meal was very good but I think it was over priced compared with other options within the area.

Booked The Depot for 20 people to have a big family reunion with some coming back from the USA. Despite the large number the set menu choices were well varies, balanced and catered to all tastes. High quality food, and over the starter, main and dessert courses the food was without fault save one justifiable comment that a risotto dish was under seasoned. Other than that glitch, the food all arrived in time, the service was very good and there were no problems sometimes associated with catering a large number such as people waiting for food when others have got theirs etc.We sat in the back of the restaurant overlooking the Thames and it is a great spot. Very pricey to be honest, but as a treat and once in a while I would highly recommend this place.Oh, and by the way, make sure you reserve a table overlooking the river. It's worth it.

Great weather when we went, so we had to chose between a table under the sun with no view or a table inside with a great view on the river. Good company. Nothing pretentious, but a very good place to spend a good lunch as a family. Fine by me!
