Had planned to lunch at The Dawnay Arms for a while after reading about its amazing food and reputation as a top rated gastro pub. Recommendation from more than I’ve well known chef also noted .We live a few miles away and had a lovely drive to Newton On Ouse . We were impressed by the appearance of the pub and lovely gardens with view over the river. We received a lovely welcome and were made comfortable in the very pleasant restaurant .The menu and specials sounded delightful with lots of lovely dishes to choose from.We really enjoy home made bread so chose White Onion Soup with Thyme which was served with home made bread. The soup was delicious but the bread was a disappointment and tasted neither home made or fresh that day. Mains were nicely presented . My husband’s Ballotine of chicken was luke warm but was very nicely presented. My fish - I ordered a half portion was very nice and served with pea purée and delicious tartare sauce . The chips had a slightly pre prepared taste rather than freshly cut and cooked.I chose a mango and passion fruit Pavlova which looked very pretty but was let down slightly by a rock hard meringue nest - I prefer crispy on the outside and slightly chewy inside.Mango sorbet was delicious . The dessert was covered with diced mango which was under ripe and slightly chewy. Our expectations were high and we just felt a few obvious little things were overlooked or not quite right for us.

Impromptu visit, fancied a Sunday lunch, so after a quick Google search, decided on The Dawnay Arms. It has never been before, but reviews looked good. Arrived around 1pm, and it was starting to get busy. We hadn't booked but the young lady said if we didn't mind the back room rather than the main dining area she would happily show us a table. The bar staff took our drink order and said he would bring it to our table. The back room was warm and cosy. Sunday lunch had the usual options of beef, lamb, pork, or chicken. I chose beef, and my hubby had the pork. Food arrived, and we were not disappointed it looked and tasted great. Creamy mash potatoes, roast carrots, roast parsnips stacked with beef and topped with homemade Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes to the side plus a side dish of cremed leeks and red cabbage with an extra gravy boat. The pork option had excellent crackling on the top. The food was absolutely delicious and a generous portion. Great food, friendly staff & a warm welcome. I couldn't have asked for more. We will definitely be going back.

A fabulous experience from start to finish. We had a lovely table for lunch overlooking the rive to celebrate an 80th Birthday. The service was impeccable - nothing was too much trouble. This is an excellent place to eat, lovely position by the river, not best appreciated in December! Welcoming, prompt, friendly, efficient service, could not have been better. Brought lovely starters for the greedier members of the party, but ensured that didn't delay main courses too much, which were all brought out together, the various fish dishes were all excellent as was the pheasant. Not to mention lovely puds. I can only assume they were not full because they had quite rightly geared their bookings to the staff they had. Do your best to experience this pub/restaurant.

What a fabulous pub this is, great atmosphere, real fires, warm and friendly. Six of us ate here for an impromptu birthday celebration, the land lady and staff were so friendly, the food was delicious, hubby loved the selection of beers and the overall atmosphere was relaxed with candles on the tables and chilled out background music. We would definitely recommend eating here, thank you to you all, we will be back x

Mediocre at best. Venison Burger for £18 was dry, bland and poorly presented. Menu choice was uninspiring, in contrast to the Lunches which are excellent. Charging £24 for a £6 Bottle of Merlot is a ripoff at best. A disappointing experience.

If you're into scallops then these were the best we have ever tasted. Beautiful cooked in a parsley crust served on 2 shells. We both said how delicious they were! We both chose the ham hock chicken and leek pie with champ mash and buttered green beans. Pie's were good and my partner, being a pie connoiser enjoyed his and mine as I couldn't eat mine after finding a large piece of bone! The restaurant itself was nice, perhaps a little more uparket than some of the others in the area and we were recommended to visit. The waitress service was great, very attentive and friendly and definitely made our experience worth a mention. Menu appeared varied with a takeaway option. We may try one of the pizzas on offer another time.

Sunday lunch on Dec 11 my wife’s birthday. Cold day and friendly staff, who fussed our Westie, sat us by roaring log fire. The service by young staff was brilliant and the food truly excellent. Unusually we had starter and main course. Camembert lovely and pate served with home made chutneys. Traditional roast beef just superb as was my beer battered haddock, crispy to the last bite. The sides and chips were beautifull. Just loved the staff, I prefer ketchup to tartare sauce so they brought a bottle of Heinz , great. A fabulous presentation ,quality of food in a nice pub. Many thanks to the chef, this is what quality pub food is about.

Dropped into the Dawnay Arms for a drink and light lunch and to be fair the food and drink were very good. The experience was soured by the poor attitude and rudeness of the barman Tristan. My wife had the bacon chop which was also well received my daughter and her hubby both went for a chicken dish, out 4 year old grandson had spaghetti a bowl full that he could not get through. We had about 5 pints of beer between us and 2 soft drinks. The sweets were also a big hit I had a Knickerbocker glory wow what a treat every one else went for the Sticky toffee pudding,(of which my wife is a bit of an expert) these all went down well. The young lady waitress was very helpful and professional, and the lady behind the bar who I think was the owner was also very friendly what a great night we had. Party of four people for lunch. A roaring open wood fire wafted a nice smokey tinge to the atmosphere on this chilly day when we met up for lunch and a drink. Service was helpful and friendly and obliging. We chose from the cheaper menu (with less choice) although some of the specials were appealing. We all had rump steak with mash and green beans. The rump had been braised to perfection and was accompanied with a rich, lovely gravy. Timothy Taylor’s and Black Sheep ales were served at the bar and seemed very well kept.

This is my second visit and I’m delighted to report that the standard of food was just as good as the first time. Set in a wonderful Yorkshire village with the exquisite Beningbrough Hall on its doorstep, this place is tastefully decorated and offers a welcoming feel as soon as you cross the threshold. The staff are very friendly and obliging and they ‘love’ dogs. This is an essential for me personally because we take our rather large dog everywhere we possibly can. The food is simply presented, you get exactly what it says on the menu, but don’t mistake its delightful simplicity for uninteresting. The food it’s bold, full of flavour and most importantly, delicious. The Dawnay Arms is a firm favourite and I can’t wait to return for more!

We enjoyed our meal at this pub. We had the beer battered halibut and an omelette (which was very expensive for an omelette at over £12, but beautifully cooked). We sat in the bar area near to the open fire. I guess our gripes were the cost of both meals, which we considered expensive when compared to other comparable village pubs we had eaten at and the wait for the meals to arrive which was in excess of half and hour, when really the place wasn't that busy on a week day evening. Visited with family on a sunny bank holiday Sunday. Sat outside in the very pretty garden overlooking the River Ouse. The food was very good, plentiful and hot. The children's menu was also good value with a lot of sausages with the sausage and mash! The staff were excellent, friendly and efficient and made us very welcome. Would definitely go back and would recommend. Also looked pet friendly although we didn't have any pets.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch here with an old friend. Service was good, food, very nice and I loved the homemade bread. The dining room was not busy - not sure what the noise levels would be like if it had been as lots of hard surfaces, but on the day we were there it was lovely.

Excellent food and service, enhanced by the Coravin system which facilitated excellent wine by the glass.

We have been there every two to three months for years and had a great meal every time. On a Summer's evening the back garden overlooking the river is just gorgeous. There used to be really nice staff there too.Tonight's meal was not good and the response was poor. Things were slow for everything and the place was empty. When the food finally arrived the steak was cold. I mean cold - not even luke warm. A pat of just out the fridge butter was on the mushroom and it was not melting. The waiter had just made a great show of having dish towels to carry not warm plates..The chips were nice but the steak was not so they offered to take it back - it came out several minutes later with a hot mushroom and plate and the steak unchanged. I asked again and they charred the steak so it was shoe leather. If you have swing doors wait till they shut before laughing about customers or do not give them cause to be hacked off in the first place. And yes I do understand about letting steak rest but I have been to countless restaurants who can manage that and have the meat warm - several within a few miles of the Dawnay. They also have attentive staff. Everyone has off nights but that was ridiculous.

Double celebration of mothers day and a birthday.Booked ahead-table for 4. Very miserable welcome from staff-"you can sit here(by toilet in a corridor) or here(by conservatory door with gale blowing in) but you can't shut the door as staff need to use it. So we chose the corridor table which was dark, cold and my mother in law kept her coat on for the entire trip.Apart from poor table options if you're a party of 4,the food was really delicious. I enjoyed the halibut and the chips were very tasty.Puddings didn't work for me..trying to be a bit too clever with flavour combinations in my opinion, but I would go back for the food here... on a warm day and sit outside in the stunning beer garden.

Simply put, my wife, a chef, said 'Probably the best roast port I have ever eaten.' I can vouch for the roast beef. The food was great which makes the Sunday lunch offer of three courses for under £20 excellent value. We stopped here by chance and had no expectations but were very pleasantly surprised.Staff were good too.

Visited on a busy Saturday night. There was a large party in the restaurant but we were given a table in the bar area. Kerry and her staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Service was very good and the food was exceptional. A lovely evening in lovely surroundings will definitely be back again.

Just to go regularly for Sunday dinner. Food has never disappointed! Went when my parents came to visit and we all had a 3 course meal. Great value if you pick from their set menu. Really worth a visit if you are around! They used to serve game if in season, which I can only recommend!

Unlike the last review I've just read I would like to state in utter contrast how much I enjoyed a family meal out at The Dawnay Arms on Sunday! My boys treated me to Sunday dinner on Mothers Day and we all thoroughly loved it! The roast dinner was delicious. My husband and I both had the beef and it was an incredibly well cooked generous slice accompanied by very tasty fresh vegetables and potatoes. Our two boys wolfed their dinners down too and my eldest said it was the best tea he'd had in ages ( I didn't take offence! )Everytime we've eaten at The Dawnay we've enjoyed our food and the atmosphere. Kerry the landlady always has time for you and was extremely happy on Sunday after a super busy successful weekend due to the beautiful weather and consequent custom. Living in the village with two young boys we don't get to one of our local pubs as much as we'd like to but Sunday reminded my husband and I how lucky we are to have such a lovely pub on our doorstep so we have made a March resolution to start getting the sitter round more often... steak night here we come!Thank you Kerry and all the busy hardworking team for a lovely Mothering Sunday meal!

It's only when you have really rude waitresses (We had 3 in total - not one of the 3 asked at any point if the meal was ok, do you want anything, any drinks, any sauces ect) that you realize the effect they have on your overall experience! We changed our original booking from another Pub to here, and wish we hadn't. It was a complete disappointment. Throughout the meal we had to go to the bar to order our own drinks, nobody asked at any point. We payed just under £20 a head for 3 courses, which we would find reasonable if the food was nice. The problem was, I had more meat on my weekly £5 carvery, and to say it's meant to be a special occasion (Mother's day) this was disappointing. We ordered beef, and got one slice of beef, 1 Yorkshire pudding, and 3 roast potatoes. We then got ONE vegetable pot of carrots & cauliflower & cabbage between 8 of us. At not any point did the waitress ask if it was ok, as we were waiting to tell her we'd like some more! They also charged £3 for the tiniest bowl of ice cream for our 2 year old. I think they charged us for the tub that they bought and gave us a spoonful of it. It's an absolute shame as the pub is in a gorgeous location with a beautiful beer garden, but as we like to pay for a overall experience, we will not be returning. Things would be different if the staff knew how to smile and not behave like they had the worst job in the world and couldn't be bothered to be there. The little of the food we did get, was nice, just shame it was rationed and on the cheap.

Nice village pub with a fantastic beer garden overlooking the river. My parents really enjoyed there food but my fish was a little overdone. Overall a really nice example of a gastro pub.

We've been to the Dawnay Arms on and off for a good few years but not been there recently. In need of Sunday lunch with the family, we booked in at short notice and got a lovely round table at the back of the pub facing out over the beer garden with the river beyond. The Dawnay Arms is a lovely old pub with flag-stone floors, an open fire and a log burner. Service is friendly and warm.As a five we had three traditional Sunday roasts, a Cod Rissoto and a Venison. All were very good with ample but not excessively large portions. Puddings were good too and I particularly enjoyed the spiced brioche bread and butter pudding with custard. The Dawnay arms is a reliable choice fo Sunday lunch or a la carte.

Several visits now across different times and days -which is immaterial reallyBecause the consistency is ever present-Quality of food and relaxed atmosphere with good serviceMakes this one of Yorks Hidden germs. Sensible policy as regards early evening time slots-you're not ruled out just because somebody is coming at 8 o'clock, if you pop in at 6 , a must visit.

Slightly more a restaurant than a village pub, but there is a small area to sit for a drink.Pricey, but good quality and professionally run.Nothing is too much trouble for the well trained and willing staff.I tried a local beer, a very pale, pale ale, which was packed with the light fresh flavour of hops, delicious! All the food smelled and looked good, with a good selection on offer.

Owen hosted our wedding reception. Lovely family do (7 bridesmaids and 3 pageboys between 5 and 10) with an outside BBQ. Happy for us to put up a bouncy castle. Really relaxed feel. We put up gazebos in case it rained so we could cover an outside area to seat 48. We had a band inside later. Room to dance. Couldn’t have asked for more.

Gorgeous little spot and great local cheese and tea and scones and chutney. Friendly staff too, who chatted with us for a while. They gave us free apples as well.
