The food is very good and the place is very cool

Nice place, but weird staff behaviour. I've been treated rudely after saying I didn't reserve. The place was empty. Excellent location, and nice looking building.

Nestled in the hustle and bustle of London, the Culpeper brings a bit of warmth and coziness - both in the pub and in the rooms. It's not a particularly quiet place, especially as the rooms are above the pub, but if you want to stay somewhere different and interesting, definitely give them a try! (Do not recommend to people with mobility issues as you need to go up narrow stairs to your accommodation. And no light sleepers as the pub and streets outside can be loud.) I would recommend this place for couples as quarters are cramped and there's only one key to be shared (charmingly, the key is an old-fashioned skeleton key!). The whole place gives the image of being wrapped in a big warm blanket while sitting in front of a fireplace.

Lots of people, no room inside. Standing on the sidewalk with wine bottle and glass. Tasted good, an experience in itself!

Absolutely, here’s a more assertive version while still staying compliant: “I called twice and emailed twice with no response whatsoever. The complete lack of communication made it impossible to even make a booking. It’s incredibly frustrating to be ignored—especially when I was ready to give them my business along with 15 others for a meal.

I stayed here last week for two nights and had the perfect stay for what I needed. When I arrived I was welcomed and shown to my room with everything explained to me. I also received a welcome drink which was a nice touch. The rooms are very nice, with a homely but rustic style, definitely to my taste. Coffee and water provided. Lovely bathroom and comfy bed. Breakfast, which was included was amazing. Turkish eggs and the full English are my recommendation. Just a couple of minutes walk away from the room. There was a separate entrance/exit for the rooms which was nice especially as I was going in and out for work or from runs so didn’t have to go through the main bar downstairs. And the tube was so close. Would definitely recommend and would love to stay again be it for work, or a London trip. Thanks to the team!

Attentive friendly staff. Great food. Great location.

Unfortunately the service was awful. Brought our baby - wasn't crying or anything - but were given exasperated sighs and eye rolls by the staff as soon as we stepped foot inside. Food was good but prices were extortionate for what it was.

Booked for Mother’s Day and was hesitant as I had a bad experience at their sister restaurant in Islington, however it exceeded expectations! Service was friendly and attentive. The roast was so tasty and the dining room upstairs had good acoustics for a relaxed Sunday afternoon.

I had celebrated my birthday dinner there as it was very easy to get to. It was on a safe street and very close to my house. I was completely impressed with the service and the food was to die for.

Large busy pub with restaurant. Booking online is a must as it does get pretty busy and the restaurant is on the first floor. The atmosphere is good, as is the service. Food is exceptional with all 4 of us eating food perfectly cooked and with a certain amount of flair I even managed to find a steak tartare/ fries for a main and a really nuce crumble to finish. Can't complain here and highly recommended.

We stayed there for a week. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the pub is lovely and the food is excellent ! Unfortunately, we were a little disappointed with the room. We had to ask twice to change the sheets as they were dirty. There were also ants around the sink. What's more, it's very noisy in the mornings with the cleaning lady coming into the neighboring rooms at 8:30 with the vacuum cleaner and everything else. There was also work being done on the roof just above, which we hadn't been warned about and which also caused noise in the morning. If you're planning to sleep in, forget it!

The Sunday Roast costs £3 less than the Devonshire Arms and the quality, taste, service and experience wasn't even half as good. Bang average.

The roast was just excellent as well as the desserts! On top of that the staff were so professional and friendly (mainly the girl that was taking care of our table, a tall blonde girl, unfortunately I didn't ask for her name) that made the experience even better! I can't wait to go back!

Stunning venue in a great part of London. Shame the team don’t understand basic customer service, respect or etiquette to respond to 3 emails regarding business that WAS at least £2,500. Their loss.

An excellent experience at The Culpeper. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great, and the service was impeccable. Special mention goes to Lilu, a charming, attentive, and very professional waitress who made our visit even better. We will definitely return.

Tenía un plato de coliflor precioso. Les había aconsejado que era el cumpleaños de mis maridos - le trajeron un postre con una vela que era un toque encantador. El menú cambia con la temporada, las elecciones encantadoras, porciones de buen tamaño. Algo para todos. Volverá, y probar sus lugares hermanos en el futuro también!

Lovely pub, but unfortunately the opening times on the website say till 9pm on Sundays, but we got kicked out at 7.45pm!

We had a wonderful stay at the Culpeper. The room was great and the location was perfect for exploring the city—both because of access to the local neighborhood and the hotel is right by a tube stop! I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a cool place to stay. Also, special shout out to Rebecca in the restaurant for helping find great bottles of wine (especially natural funky ones!).

We were in the restaurant last night. Lewis provided a really friendly and professional front of house service and was attentive and helpful when discussing dietary restrictions. The food was incredible, the chef is clearly talented at composing dishes. Our meals were well seasoned and had a fantastic balance of flavours & textures. As a coeliac vegan I find it hard to eat at a lot of restaurants yet this meal was one of my all time favourite dining experiences and it’s an omni establishment. It’s nice to find a chef (and team) who are aware of seasonality and have a sensitivity for balance. I honestly could not fault it. Thank you! Sorry about only the one photo, and it doesn’t do it justice (mood lighting). That pickled cauliflower was heavenly.

Pub with a nice atmosphere but unfortunately this Saturday December 28 at noon it was so cold in the pub that we were not able to stay and eat. Damage.

Firstly the staff are amazing. We walked in on a busy December day after a huge disappointment at another restaurant who weren’t accessible as advertised. The staff at The Culpeper gave us a lovely table, and managed to pull together a beautiful Christmas dinner for us. Definitely saved the day. Would love to go back and see the roof garden. 🪴

We came here for dinner with kids and friends. The atmosphere was lovely, the staff were very accommodating and the food was great. We have been in London over a decade and this was a lovely Sunday meal out.

Went to the Culpeper for my Dad's birthday/Christmas meal and the food was just outstanding. The Christmas cocktail menu is lush too. The staff really looked after us. No word of a lie, best Christmas meal I've ever had. Thanks guys!

Great venue for a big Friendsmas. Brian was our waiter and was super friendly and helpful.

Extremely rude member of staff; tall person with glasses and tied back blonde hair. Witnessed them have several arguments with customers. Vulgar language used and threatened to throw individuals out for no reason although the security/bouncer didn't seem to agree. Would come back as long as this member of staff is no longer working there.

Lovely pub, good choice of drinks, great location, but horrific staff. Particularly the tall guy with the earrings and nose ring. I’ve never been spoken too so rudely as a customer in my life. Not just a lack of courtesy but outright confrontational. Won’t be going back as long as he is working there which is a shame as it’s a great venue.

We had a fabulous stay at the Culpeper bedrooms. Our room was spacious, clean and stylish. The staff were so friendly and the breakfast and drink included were incredible touches. The hotel offers incredible value for money. Thanks to all the staff. We will be back!

No suelo revisar pubs mientras trabajo en el oficio, lo que me convierte en un quisquilloso pero estoy haciendo una excepción aquí. Este es un bar relativamente nuevo reemplazando su antigua identidad como una sala de billar llena de pozos locales. Está limpio y bien equipado. La selección de cervezas, vinos y licores es excelente, sin gluten y veganos son atendidos, y no sirven chupitos! El personal y el gerente eran eficientes, amables, bien informados y conversadores. Total 9/10.

Price didn’t‘ fit the Metal portion (Gnocchi). It was like a kids-Portion. Stuff member (waitress) wasn‘t apologetic and said „ok“. We are expecting different reactions to customers than only saying „ok“.

We had our christmas dinner with my work colleagues here. The service was good, staff were friendly. Food was tasty, the portion size was generous and satisfying. The drinks were good, quality wines. Toilets were clean.

As a real fan of Culpeper London, I'm a little unsure what to write here. I love the location, the beautiful building, the vibrant atmosphere (there's a wonderful Christmas decoration at the moment), the selection of drinks, the view from the roof terrace.... all fantastic. What I really dislike is the current unfriendliness and arrogance of the bar staff, especially the taller guy in the skirt. We ordered several drinks and things at the bar, but we were never, not once, served in a friendly manner. No interest whatsoever in our wishes, not a single friendly word, simply nothing. And we saw this manner with other guests too, so I don't think it was anything personal, just general disinterest. The staff were having a party behind the bar, amongst themselves. That's nice to see, but it brought the rude behavior towards the guests even more to the forefront. We are willing to come back at a later date and give this lovely place another chance, but certainly not in the next few weeks.

We recently spent the weekend in London and stayed at The Culpepper. The location is brilliant, good value, close to London Liverpool Station making traveling from Stansted an absolute breeze and the Aldgate East tube station is only a 5 min walk away from the hotel. Spitalfields Market and Truman Brewery Market are also near by and there are loads of wonderful restaurants and shops in the immediate area. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and helpful, holding our bags while we waited for our room to be ready. The welcome drink and the 10% discount on food and drink is a really lovely touch. We had lunch at The Culpepper on the first day. We had the hummus and flat breads, burratta with kale and hazelnuts, cheese croquettes and pumpkin pie for dessert. All the food was exceptional. Very fresh ingredients and so so tasty. Their drinks menu is extensive with many local beers, fun cocktails, extensive wine list and even some wonderful non alcoholic choices. I was interested in trying an orange wine that they had on the menu and they let me taste it first which was really nice. We had dinner the second night we stayed and once again the food was exceptional. We had the bavette, monkfish and mackerel pate. The food is such high quality and the portion sizes are perfect, not too much but not too little. We also had a number of cocktails, the Fig & Bubbles being my favourite and it was lovely then to pop up the stairs to bed when we were finished. Even though the hotel is situated over a pub and restaurant we never noticed any noise from below, even though it was massively busy when we returned to the hotel on Friday evening. The room was nicely decorated, with a stack of books about the local area being a very nice touch. Breakfast is served at their sister hotel just down the street, which gave us a nice little walk each morning and once again the food was superb. We are returning to London next summer for another trip and will be staying at The Culpeper again. We look forward to hopefully experiencing the rooftop bar as it was closed due to the time of year.

We celebrated a 30th birthday, in this beautiful and luminous place. Huge appreciation for the friendly and kind staff. The food was delicious and it just made the base for a gorgeous day. Thank you to the Culpeper team and Lewis, whom I communicated through emails to ensure all was sorted for the day.

Take up the whole pavement in the evenings with their barriers. Very unhelpful for those in wheelchairs or buggies.

Food, wine, service and atmosphere were superb. Couldn’t fault anything. Would recommend to anyone, and can’t wait to come back again.

On a Saturday dinner night, the groundfloor was packed and loud and busy, however upstairs, the restaurant area was inviting for a good time and great food. and the Pate, a dream!

We’ve stayed and eaten here three times now … rooms very comfortable, food spot on and the staff are very friendly and very accommodating. Looking to book again, this time to take in the Christmas lights 🎄

Went for a delicious sunday roast here. We were 20 minutes late and they kept our booking which was so appreciated. The Culpeper is a beautiful pub with a great atmosphere and interior design. The food itself was also so so good. We had comte and black garlic croquettes which were delicious and then I had the chicken roast. The roast was sensational and my friends beef also lovely. Would 100% come back here

September 2024: Stopped by for drinks at the rooftop garden area and dinner in the dining room. The rooftop is a very pleasant area to chat and enjoy the outdoors. Had a IPA session from Purity Brewing. Dinner started with the bread and house butter. Then we had the bavette (steak) with fries, chicken and bacon pithivier, and a side of green beans. The food was very delicious 😋. In the dining room, the beer selection had more options. Tried a bitter from Five Points Brewing. Service was friendly and attentive. Will definitely come back again for more delicious food and beer.

THIS IS NO LONGER A PUB. Previous an historic boozer, The Princess Alice, named after the 1878 Thames disaster which claimed 640 lives. This place is now a posh hotel with a bar.

First time staying in a pub. What a great experience!!! The rooms were great. Even though the bar was popping it was quiet when we went upstairs. We ate at the restaurant for dinner which was one of the best meals in London! The rooftop was great and free breakfast at the Buxton was amazing. Will be back!

I use The Culpeper for meetings and it's fantastic. The food, drinks and service is excellent. Meetings always turn into social events at The Culpeper!

We enjoyed a gorgeous Sunday roast here last week. The portion size was generous but not too much that you couldn’t finish it all! My partner had the beef roast, and I had the vegan roast, and we both thoroughly enjoyed them! The staff were very accommodating when we asked for extras like more gravy or a Yorkshire! They have a nice selection of beers which we started with. The glass of chilled Portuguese red was perfect on the 30 degree day we visited 😅 But I must say my favourite part of my meal was the orange tequila cocktail I had, I am still thinking of it to this day! The building itself was very lovely and pretty to enjoy a special meal in.

Eating on the pretty rooftop terrace in the heart of the city was amazing. So peaceful. The food was great and the staff friendly and kind.

Food was good - very generous portions and good value for the quality. The mimosa was excellent and we were fortunate that the New Zealand waiter/manager (so sorry we didn't get his name) is clearly passionate about his job and made a lot of effort to find a wine we would enjoy. The barman downstairs though didn't know how to make a Bloody Mary and told me the rose was dry "it's pale pink so it's dry". The other staff apart from the NZ waiter were a bit off hand, hence the 4 stars. Overall I would recommend.

What a disappointment! The menu did read Sunday Roast as Beef Shin but it should have read “shredded beef in a Yorkshire pudding! And It was average especially for the price. I paid a 12:5% service charge but on principle I read that an extra £1 for Water Aid had been added? I could be wrong but like the majority including McDonald’s it should be a request not just added to the bill. (I bought wine with no water!) All in all an average overpriced Sunday lunch.

One of the employees of the bar was incredibly disrespectful, I tried talking to the manager and turns out it was him. I believe this is unacceptable behaviour from a manager, he used very inappropriate and condescending language towards me and my friend.

Had a sunday roast with my mates there, the roast per se was decent one of but not the best, a comfy setting, the only downside was the wait for the food was exceptionally long

My friends and I came for a work / friends reunion - we were amazed by not just the amazing food but the great service. Betty was delightful - helped with ordering the best dishes and was incredibly friendly. Will definitely bring my colleagues and friends here in the future for more great service!

Popped in here for lunch, was disappointed in the options in the menu if you have intolerances. There was no gf bread which is found odd in this day and age, so I ended up with steak sandwich and chips without the baguette, the chips were not good either. Service was attentive though

Food is nice, but don’t get tricked by the wine prices above the bar! You’ll automatically be charged for a 175ml even though the menu says 125 :)

We spontaneously decided to visit on our first day of vacation because of the great reviews and the proximity to our hotel. We weren't disappointed. Very friendly staff, excellent food and a reasonable price for London. We will definitely come here again!

Had dinner in the restaurant and it was perfect. Pork neck with pureed carrots, potato rosti. So tasty and tender

This was a restaurant that we had not tried before. The atmosphere, the service and the quality of the food makes it a place that we will hope to return to.

I had a fully vegetarian dinner. Both an orzotto starter and a main of gnocchi with greens were tasty and well prepared. I also tried an "Eaton Mess" which was quite originally presented compared to the classic version in a glass or cup. The room, half full, was relatively quiet compared to the super-noisy pub space downstairs. Service was friendly and efficient, prices are reasonable for the area and in line with quality. Overall, while nothing would set my pulse racing in culinary terms, it was a pleasant dining experience for a conversation in good company.

Just spent a fantastic two night stay at the Culpeper for a family occasion. What can i say! amazingly welcoming staff who couldn't have been more helpful. Ate here on the Friday evening and the food was incredible and plenty of it. Location is superb being in walking distance to tower bridge and tower of London and the tasty Borough Market. Thankyou to all at the culpeper and Buxton for making our stay so enjoyable. We'll be back soon The Careys

The best place in the area. We enjoyed it very much

I had been to the restaurant before (lovely food), but this time we decided to stay a few nights in one of their bedrooms. My partner and I had an absolutely lovely stay which even the atrocious weather could not spoil. The super friendly young staff provided us with an umbrella and we received excellent service throughout. Bedrooms are small but cosy, the pub is lively and great fun, but the biggest surprise was that a fantastic breakfast was included in the very reasonable price. To those that have complained about this establishment: be aware that this is Shoreditch, not Kensington, so you get the East London vibes that we absolutely adore. And it is above a pub/restaurant, so there might be some noise at certain points in the evening (which we did not experience btw), and it is right on a road, which means there will be traffic. If you’re looking for a quiet hotel with old English charm, this might not be for you. We will certainly return.

The food was amazing, the dessert I ordered tasted awesome however when I ordered some dessert for take away as it was so nice, they only wrapped it around cling film and foil which was a failure for me.

Located just down the road from our main office, this is a firm favourite. The staff are super friendly and even opened the roof bar a little early for us and our intenernational visitors! While there are A LOT of steps to get to the rooftop bar, it is well worth it. Great views and the whole area is surrounded by herbs and fruit grown for the restaurant. Smells amazing! Well worth a visit (and a climb).

Really good food and ambience but the service is so bad it’s a shame. The waitresses were very unfriendly. We just ordered food and didn’t even ask for something extra - so we are still wondering why they acted so bad. Even before ordering food, the moment we sat there the waitress came to tell us we only have 1.5 h so we should order fast but in a very unfriendly way? The only thing we asked was when a friend came in to pick us up in the end when we were about to leave but we just wanted to finish off our beers and leave, so we asked if we could use a chair until people for the other tables arrive (there were plenty) - they said no saying they are booked? Which is fine we only wanted to take it for 5 min until we finish off our beer but they said no again in a very unfriendly way. There were plenty like lots (!) of free chairs - what’s the harm in using them for a few minutes until people arrive? No one came at the time we left. They all remained empty. Even our friend that came in for literally 5 min thought it’s weird. It’s sad that they have such unfriendly service despite amazing food. It’s also sad to be treated bad as we were looking forward to enjoy a nice Sunday roast in this place. Hence, I don’t think I’ll go there again :/.

Terrible service, staff were rude and unfriendly. We felt they pushing us to leave even though our bill were 200£ I never experienced a restaurant doesn’t have a spare chair even through many tables are empty. Such a shame really, feel sorry for the owners

Nice Shoreditch pub. Didn't eat here but the food looked good. Drinks and prices were standard for the area. Got quite busy and we had to stand for a little while.

Came here for cocktails and the staff were wonderfully welcoming and accommodating, they were on hand to provide plates and forks and even went so far as to borrow a lighter from another customer! They saved the day - the cocktails were genuinely delicious too!
