Nice enough wee bar but the food leaves a lot to be desired. The steak Sandwich with mustard, onions and chips for 12 quid was shocking. Undercooked dry steak strips with a dollop of mustard sitting on an deep fried onion ring (all store bought, likey Aldi) wrapped in two pieces of half toasted tiger bread (Aldi again) and garnished with what looked like paprika powder. Have a drink but eat elsewhere.

When staying in a guest house locally I passed this place a few nights on way home. Then decided to pop in and check it out...so delighted. The staff here are just gorgeous. Hally particular made us feel so welcome, suggesting things to see while visiting this beautiful city. She was warm, friendly, fun, and in my eyes gave the pub its atmosphere. Once we found the place, we were back again the following night! Nice little pub, with a good function room downstairs too.

Had booked tickets for the theatre nearby and whilst wandering up and down the street looking for somewhere to get a quick bite to eat before our show started we stumbled across this bar. The girl behind the bar seemed to be working on her own but greeted everyone who came in and served everyone fairly quickly. We managed to get a seat in the corner but it filled up pretty quickly after we arrived but the bar maid dealt with it superbly. We ordered 2 meals and 2 sides, they came in less than 10 minutes and they were superb! Can highly recommend the nachos and fajitas!! We come to Edinburgh quite frequently and will definitely be back here.

So much went wrong but it was quite funny. Both staff members were new for a start but nice with it - even apologised for their incompetence. While ordering my food, they realised their card machine wasn't working so I had to pack up my belongings to go to the ATM. Second try at ordering my food and they couldn't answer any of my questions except for one. I reminded them there was a discount theatre goers and received blank looks. I pointed out it was written on the blackboard outside so one of them went to check. Meantime the other tried to work out the till without a great deal of success but they got there eventually. Unfortunately when my food arrived, it was slightly wrong but easily corrected. It tasted OK and was acceptable but not sure about the quality of the ingredients.

The worst place for customer service . Went to the place for pre theatre food. The waiter cleaning table next us knocked the lit table candle on the floor next us splashing me and my wife clothe with hot wax. No aplology no regret. When we wanted to complain the manger said “she was too busy with customers to deal with complaints”. What a terrible place. Give it a miss and have your food somewhere more customer friendly

Called in for pre theatre drinks/dinner which was great for what we wanted. Tall blond lady seemed to be on the ball and appeared to be running the place really well. We had a look at the menu as everyone around us seemed to be munching away around us and the food didn’t disappoint. We ordered a burger and chips each which was first class. The customers around us were struggling to get any mayo out of the bottles but didn’t tell staff when the collected plates so the staff just put them back onto the shelf instead of the bin, so me being me I just informed the tall blond lady (I think Australian) that all the mayos were empty and next time I looked up she was going through all the sauce bottles and replenished all that was needed and I just felt that she just took a mediate comments and sorted it for the next customers. I loved the atmosphere in the bar as it was busy but the staff were on the ball. Def be back xx

This is a cool pub around the Tollcross area, just opposite the King's Theatre. As usual when I visit a new place, I ended up here because of positive Yelp reviews.Stepping inside the door, my first thought was "this is tiny, will I get a seat?". However, there is a basement area with lots more comfortable seats and tables with candles. That is where we positioned ourselves for a drink. We had just seen The Big Short, so needed a relatively relaxed and quiet place to discuss that excellent movie!I had a Guinness and Mary had an Amstel. Both came in glasses with the relevant branding, which was a nice touch. At around £4 per pint, I guess it's average for Edinburgh, but more than I usually pay for a pint. The bartenders were good- the woman that served me poured the Guinness perfectly. It was great. We enjoyed hanging out in the basement. There was music playing, but it was not too loud to discourage chat. I'll be back.

A few doors up from the Kings Arms (chain smoking aged alcoholic locals only) you would be forgiven for thinking this bar was an unfriendly Tollcross dump to dodge but venture past the barrels and through the saloon doors and you will find a warm welcome with your cold European beer. The bar staff, like the music, are unpretentious and fun which creates a lively and addictive atmosphere that puts "The Nest" head and shoulders above the competition. In a city full of chain pubs and style bars it is refreshing to be in a family run pub that is all about the beer, food, music and most importantly; the customers. Great quiz night every Monday too. Came here on a Saturday evening; we were looking to phone ahead but couldn't find a number which worked anywhere, so we just showed up at 5.30ish - a bit earlier than we were wanting to eat to make sure we got a table. Lucky we did, by 7 it was completely full. When it is not busy the pub has a bit of a lack of atmosphere and the typical musty old pub smell which was a tad off-putting, but things quickly improved. They do a good range of tasty burgers, which are served in really nice buns - they don't fall apart like some places. You get a good amount of chips with it as well. There's a good choice on draft although when I visited 3 or 4 of the taps were out which was a tad disappointing. They also have a nice selection of Edinburgh Gins which are lovely, and came at a reasonable price. They also seem to have a range of deals; beer&burger, steak night etc. We paid £37 for 2 burgers, 2 ciders, a G&T, a pint and a slice of chocolate brownie which is pretty good if you ask me!Overall this is a good unpretentious pub with good value food, make sure to get there early though as the tables are limited. There is a downstairs area but it seems very cold and dark, and not too pleasant - it also seems to be booked out for events quite a lot in any case.

We want here with an ITISON voucher deal for burgers & cocktails.Thought we were going to a bistro/restaurant, but Cuckoos Nest is actually a TINY pub that serves food. We arrived to a busy bar, being given the option of sitting downstairs on our own or upstairs at the crowded bar. We opted for the bar as sitting down stairs by ourselves felt weird. The very nice bar man managed to find us a table after some rearranging & said my husband could have beer or wine instead of the cocktail, which was much appreciated. The cocktail was ok, the burgers were tasty. The atmosphere was lively. The decor a bit dated.Parking is a nightmare in this area, so not somewhere we would return, even with a voucher deal. There are better bars in the city centre.

We visited the Cuckoo's Nest on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. Having booked a table we arrived a wee bit early and found the shutters still down. After a wee walk with our greyhound we returned to find it open. Not sure if it usually opens at that time as it seems to stay open quite late at night. We had the place to ourselves, leaving plenty of room for our dog to do what greyhounds do best, lie down and sleep. The menu is mainly burgers, beef, lamb and southern fried chicken with a variety of toppings, as well as southern fried chicken wraps and a barbecue pulled pork sandwich. There are also veggie options such as vegetable lasagne and falafel burger. Whilst the Moroccan lamb burger sounded nice, we both settled for the American, which comes with double cheese and fried onions, served with chips, beer battered onion rings and salad. The burgers were tasty, quite meaty and not overcooked so they were still nice and juicy. The fried onions were delicious. Why do more places not include fried onions with their burgers? Our voucher included cocktails. We had an elderflower mule, which was mainly ginger beer, nice and refreshing. The other cocktail was a French Martini. Like most cocktails too much juice and too little alcohol for our taste. The Cuckoo's Nest seems more focused on drink than food. Service was okay, but not overly friendly. I remember drinking here in the early 80's, and the décor seemed pretty much as it was then. Overall it is reasonable value, and the food is nice if you like a burger. Not for a romantic meal, but fine if you fancy a burger and a drink.

My friend and I had dinner here. It has a great atmosphere - nice and cozy! Very cool seating throughout with a downstairs that they use for trivia and disco late night. The Mexican burger I had was delicious! Huge portion with fries/chips, really tasty onion rings and salad! If I lived here I would come here all the time.

It's the first time I have eaten here, but it won't be the last. If you don't like burgers then you won't like the food. I would still recommend it for a chilled out drink. There's quite a few burgers you can choose from the menu, from plain to spicy. The food is served on bread boards. The presentation is excellent. I wasn't expecting such an eye feast. The food looked really good. The onion rings ( must be homemade) were the nicest I have ever tasted. I'm not a lover of onion rings, but I could of eaten a plate of them. I'm looking forward to going back

The cuckoo's nest is a little known secret in the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh. If you don't look carefully you might miss it on the corner on your way to the King's theatre; it is a very small pub with a small but interesting selection of beers on tap, a few malt whiskys and cocktails; occasionally themed nights are held there in their downstairs area. However the real treat in the cuckoo's nest is their amazing burgers. You can choose from a huge menu and you will be amazed at the massive portions that arrive embellished with chips, onion rings, salad and sauces. If you happen to be there during the weekday evenings, make sure to check special offers-these change every so often but are always excellent value for money.

Have come here quite a few times on the way home from eating out dinner at the weekend for a few pints. Every time we come in we are met by friendly staff and a buzzing atmosphere. The music is often very loud making a one to one conversation slightly difficult but the kind of venue would not be the same without the music. Downstairs can get very lively when people get up and dance. Looking forwards to coming back soon.

Best pub in Edinburgh, in my view! I'll confess I'm here all the time, but that's because of the quality of the place. Run by three friendly brothers, which gives it a really different atmosphere - they clearly care about the place. Food and music excellent, all staff friendly and helpful, and great decor! Can't recommend highly enough, particularly the Monday night pub quiz.

I'm tea-total, so it's easy for me to get bored in a drinking environment. This bar, however, has such a great atmosphere and the most perfect selection of music ever. It feels like a combination between a modern bar and a trad pub. Also opens til 3 am. Sweet spot to check out if you're in the 'burgh!

Went to a 21st party yesterday. Think I'm almost past 21st's, however the function (in the basement) was cosy with fantastic bar staff. The music was the birthday girl's own compilation. Nice touch.Food was brought out later. What a spread. Burgers of every description, huge real onion rings and gorgeous chips. Nachos with cheese, olives, mayo. Absolutely deliciousThe birthday girl's dad goes here once or twice a week and has never been disappointed.Didn't see prices of the food but suffice to say the main part was v. busy.Pros: Relaxing comfy surrounding and great food and staff.Cons: The only toilets were through the Function Room. "Large" glass of wine £5.10p! Maybe I'm out of touch! All in all a pleasant experience and would recommend a wee visit.

Visiting Edinburgh again to visit family. The Cuckoos Nest is conveniently located across the road. An updated burger menu. I had the Mexican. Sensational burger, and great fries in an updated presentation. Still friendly staff and love the intimate atmosphere. Yes the decor may be a little tired, but you soon forget this and enjoy the evening in the Pub.

Although out of town, it was an easy walk from our hotel, and is highly recommended. It's quite small but very cosy, serves very good value food and has a well stocked bar. The place is usually full of some great characters and the staff are great fun. We will return again!

I have visited this corner bar a handful of times but usually only stopping in for a quick drink, on this rather soggy night and having some tickets for a wee show at the Kings Theater, we decided to stop in and have dinner . The place was not packed but a good level of busy, we were greeted by a smiling face from behind the bar. we had a browse of the menu but after being informed of the £5 special( either a fish dish or steak sandwich) we decided on this as a good & affordable wee snack. We also ordered a bottle of house red, another bargain at under £12( a lovely Merlot-cabernet).When the food arrived we were shocked, a large tasty looking thick cut bread steak sandwich arrived with an equally large portion of fresh chips presented on a wooden chopping board. The whole meal + wine cost less than £25, we will most definatley return to The Cuckoo's Nest for drinks & for nights we're to lazy to cook , for a tasty quick dinner.

Never eaten the food here but if you are wanting an atmospheric boozer with friendly staff and good music while you drink then this is your place. It feels more like being in a friends cosy living-room than being out in a pub. I would highly recommend this down to earth pub over some of the other more pretentious bars in Bruntsfield. The womb of Tollcross ;-)
