Stopped here on the way home from holiday for a quick lunch. The young lady serving was very efficient and friendly. A slight wait for lunch but we had just ordered behind 2 other tables. We both had sandwiches. Mine was enormous, fish goujons, it was very tasty

Called in on a Sunday lunchtime after having seen signs pointing to the place on the road between Uttoxeter and Ashbourne. Very busy and told to expect a 45 minute wait. No worries for me but the food was with me in around 15 minutes or so. Varied seating areas but roomy enough. With it being a Sunday and, what seems to be the norm now, it's choice of Sunday lunch and very little else. However, good sized portions and you do get a lot of meat whatever the choice. Quality very good. Staff welcoming, very friendly and helpful. Choice of hand pumped beers. Car parking on site but soon fills. Have to resort to roadside parking but it's extreemly quiet in the village.

Sunday lunch with my family. Enormous Yorkshire pudding . Although the meat was generous it actually hid the vegetables on the plate. So stingy portions of veg. At £17 for the lamb a tad expensive for the portion size. Elderflower panacotta had a very strong flavour not the delicate favour one would expect and had been heavily set with gelatine so was chewy. The sundae barely touched the glass sides and had 2 blobs of ice cream on the top, no other items such as cream . We asked for a crumble and the topping was rancid! We sent it straight back! No one asked about our meal or apologised for the errors in the meals and then we were charged for the rancid crumble. We pointed this out and it was only then taken off the bill. Only in the area another few days, so won’t be back. A big disappointment for somewhere that looked so promising

Characterful and friendly pub/restaurant in a beautiful village with a good mix of locals and visitors. Visited 3 times during our week's stay in Marston Montgomery - Saturday lunch, mid week evening and Sunday evening. Sunday roast is highly recommended. Despite a small menu of reasonably priced classics, all choices were cooked well with friendly restaurant and bar staff. Well worth a visit.

Found this absolute gem by chance when skimming for post-Alton Towers accommodation (have stuck a separate review on for that) From start to finish the night was simply amazing. Insanely welcoming team, lovely drinks selection and the menu, well… lost for words! 10/10 service, unfortunately we didn’t grab any names to mention but to everyone on shift Saturday 22nd July you are a credit to the industry. We ended up taking some food away for the trip home the next day as it was very filling (and we did go for 3 starters, 2 mains and 1 pudding…) but perfect. My partner loved the burger and squid in a fish pie just made my day. Brilliant wine and had a nice chat about some of the cool bottles in stock too. In all honesty I’m one of those that loves to nit pick and find things to complain about but I really can’t, maybe that it’s too far away for us to visit every week from Cornwall?! We’ll definitely return when up that way!

The food and table service were of a high standard and the evening represented good value for money. The covid precautions were evident, effective and simple. So what made the service so special? The following day we returned to Dorset and discovered that a scarf (with great sentimental value) was missing. Telephoned the Crown to find that it had been found outside.Thank you to whoever kindly handed it in.Scarf washed and despatched and sent by recorded delivery. It is the actions of individuals that subscribe to such high standards of service that go above and beyond that warrant real praise. More importantly it demonstrates the good side of our humanity.

We are at the crown twice as a family group. First visit on a Saturday afternoon had the tandoori halloumi and very nice. The key feature though was on the Sunday and it was possibly the best roast I have had. Beef and all the trimmings and Amazon Ng roast potatoes! Very good Yorkshire's and lovely mash!!! The service was impeccable with both visits. All of the staff were very friendly.and efficient. I feel sad not to love closer to visit here more often. Another member of our party commented the chicken was amazingly tasty and some foodies in our group said in to of the roasts they have had.

The building and its interior is stunning and exceptionally clean! Very warm and friendly welcome by the staff! So.....the food itself....wow....just wow....it is the most delicious and tastiest roast dinner we have ever had (and we've been to a lot of good places with nice roast dinners) the dessert menu was also mouth watering to read but we were unfortunately too full up to have one! If you want a beautiful friendly country pub with delicious home cooked food then you will not be disappointed! With regards to reopening, I can confirm that they have everything in place to keep everyone including the bar staff safe, there are protective screens up on the bar, a one way system in place, no hanging around at the bar and everything is kept very clean and sanitised.Well done to everyone at The Crown, keep up the good work and thank you!!

Came for a friends birthday after hearing good reports. Booked in advance. Ordered our food and waited. And waited. And waited. After 45minutes we asked where our food was also noticed tables that had order before us only just receiving their food. We were told that the order had only just been started!!!! We made the decision to stay. A different waitress came over and apologied and told us that we would receive a discount. The food was good when it did arrive but when we came to pay the discount was only on one meal. Overall disappointing after hearing so many good reviews locally. The waitresses need a bit more customer service training on how to deal with situations and the kitchen needs to speed up. Being so rural locals need to be able to recommend and rave about you not leave disappointed

We've been frequent visitors to The Crown for a while but usually only for evening drinks with friends and this was our first time trying the Sunday lunch. We booked it in advance online as to avoid disappointment as I know they tend to get pretty busy! We were seated immediately and brought the menu which included lots of specials along with the traditional roast dinner choices.Service was wonderful, the girls were friendly and attentive. Food was absolutely delicious and we are already planning our returning visit!

I drive past the road signs for this pub all the time during my commute and I’ve always wanted to stop off for food. On Saturday 21st September we did just that. My boyfriend and I arrived at the pub at around 1600hrs without booking a table, that pub itself was very busy but still inviting, there was lots of outdoor seating but a private function was on so we asked for a table inside. The Lady behind the bar was busy but very friendly and welcoming, we were seen to a table in the restaurant and were served by Chloe who was also friendly and helpful. The pub itself has a classic modern feel to it and you can tell it is well looked after. The menu was full of classic pub dishes that would cater for all foodie preferences. For starters we ordered a side of garlic bread to share, when it arrived the chef had caught wind we were sharing so threw in an extra slice!!! I ordered the pie of the day (steak and Stilton) whilst my boyfriend had classic cod and chips. Our meals arrived soon after we finished our starters and they did not disappoint. The chips were huge chunky things that were amazing and the pastry on the pie was perfect! The fish and chips also looked good and the portions size was big which we like. Sorry I didn’t take any pictures we ate it too fast! Now unfortunately I didn’t get to see the dessert menu so I can’t comment on that but if they are anything like the mains I’m sure they will be scrummy!! We paid around £26 for the meals and 2 drinks which I thought was a decent price, all the staff were working hard which showed in the level of service we got (including the chef). We will defiantly be back again to sample more of the menu.

Personnally not being a fan of pub style Sunday roasts, I was very pleasantly surprised by this, it reminded me of the ones my mum used to make. My wife had the turkey roast and said it was equally as delicous and the children had fish and chips from the childrens menu which they both devoured (and one is a picky eater). There was a slight mix up of orders but was quickly and efficiently resolved.Reasonable priced and lovely pub atmostphere with attentive staff.Great food, great value, great pub!

My wife and I dropped in at 5.30pm Thursday 18/7/19 having never been before. We were expecting a typical pub grub meal so we ordered fish and chips and pork loin. The meals arrived quickly maybe too quickly. It was by no means a disaster. However the chips were very poor (dry, old and warmed up) and my vegetables consisted of only one vegetable. We complained about the chips and were offered a replacement but declined. The waitress was very apologetic and we were offered a free pudding. There was no sign of the manager to handle the situation.

Found this on the way back from Sudbury and a visit to a national trust property. Marked up on the road to Ashbourne and one of those pleasant surprises when you least expect it. Pleasant surroundings and first rate food. Pork fillets in a peppercorn sauce to die for for me. I seldom go for a dessert unless the starter and main are very, very good and on this occasion they were. The dessert did not disappoint and I will leave the discription as I would not do it justice. Food okay but overall The Crown Inn lacks a little care and attention. We ordered from the 2 for £12, this is shown as 2 for £11 on the website. One of us had bacon, fries, bearnaise sauce and rocket which was fine. The other had mini fish, fries, tartar sauce, no peas or salad. I thought this was a bit odd. Having checked the online menu just now (which differs from the one on the wall inside the pub) there should have been peas too which should have been easily spotted by the waiting staff, having been already missed by the kitchen staff. I wish now I’d rechecked the menu at the time as I did miss having a veg element. There was a good range of deserts which came well presented and tasted lovely, however these are served on a plate so a desert fork would have been really handy, a simple detail missing and not a big stretch to provide this. We would go back for another meal as the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The main menu looks okay but is quite limited, we could not take any of our vegetarian or vegan friends with us as the token veg dishes are poor options. I wish I could rate this place higher but based on the above, I did leave feeling a bit disappointed, given the hype and local advertising.

This is a lovely country pub/restaurant /B&B.; Been a few times now and food/service always good. We had the Sunday roast which was tasty, meat tender with plenty of vegetables. Deserts lovely too. Would recommend for a nice meal.

The reason for the title of the review is that my Strawberry Cheescake dessert arrived well decorated with raspberries! Good job I like them, but this could have caused a problem for someone who doesn't. The rest of the food, starter and main courses for me and the other three diners, was fine. Service was what you would expect in a country pub restaurant, good but not exceptional. Bottle of house red wine was reasonably priced and very nice. Nothing off putting that would prevent us from returning!

Called in for lunch on the recommendation of friends and we were not disappointed. We both had the steak pie, good sized portion bulging with tender meat. The chips were great and the vegetables excellent. Some gravy already poured on the pie, more in a small gravy boat. However, the gravy boat was sitting on the dinner plate, in the gravy.

Ate here after a day at Uttoxeter races. The wine was really reasonably priced. We shared an olive/bread starter. Had beef Wellington and pheasant as a main, both were really good, sadly didn't have room for a dessert. Highly recommend this restaurant and the accommodation both good value. We will be staying again.

Called in here after a 150 mile drive on our way to Buxton off the beaten track but very friendly service and the food excellent ( we had starters only as we only wanted a light snack the creamy garlic mushrooms were exceptional )

called for a drink on the way home from Ashbourne because we noticed lots of signs on the main road. The pubs has been refurbished very tastefully, my wife and i were discussing arranging to meet our friends for lunch on her birthday in April, the restaurant looked really nice with families eating in there, the only problem was the foul language from a man who was sitting at the bar which was rather off putting the staff unfortunately didn't tell him to keep his language down which was quiet bad with children being so close by.

Just eaten at The Crown, 2 couples, 4 kids. Food was excellent, staff were really good & helpful. Sunday lunch with kids can sometimes be awkward but never felt like that today! We all really enjoyed lunch & all had a great afternoon!!

I am definitely not a fan of queuing for food at a carvery so when I heard of The Crown at Marston Montgomery with its table service we decided to give it a try. First impressions were very favorable - the exterior was well presented - even a mat to wipe muddy shoes whilst outside!

This is a very comfortable pub with modern decor and the staff friendly and helpful A lunch visit encouraged us to visit for supper albeit, this was not the greatest success: the steak pie on offer was clearly overcooked (a common complaint looking at other reviews) and a slice of pie would be a better description on the menu. Other meals were OK but nothing out of the ordinary. Beers on offer were good and varied.

This is the first time at the Crown, they managed to get 4 in on Christmas Day. The welcome was festive, service at the bar quick and easy. Call through to dine and the meal was sublime, magnificent, the service was so good. The food was present well and the portions generous, no one was rushed and the whole meal took 31/2 hours, left feeling a little worse for wear but that was down to the drink if I remember. Could not praise the day enough, it was nice not to feel rushed even though they did 7 courses. Well done to everyone in making our day feel so special.

We decided to go here this Saturday evening, we'd been here during the summer and had a perfectly good lunchtime meal. Sadly it was not to be tonight. We ordered two pub standard meals, steak pie and gammon, and after 40 minutes in a not too busy pub they arrived. My gammon looked ok but the steak pie was almost totally burnt. It was a slice of pie rather than an individual pie and the tops and sides were black. How any self respecting chef could have served this is beyond belief but it had been in the oven too long and should not have left the kitchen. I had to start my gammon and my partner had to wait which is not a good starting point for a quiet meal together. It wouldn't have done to have taken my gammon back, it was well cooked enough without the addition of any further heat. Shortly after another pie arrived, it was better than the first attempt but still looked as though it been in the oven too long. As it turned out it was not overly endowed with meat and didn't taste very good. We eat out a lot, we enjoy a good steak pie, they are a standard to judge the food of any restaurant but this was not one of those. When the waitress came and asked us yet again was everything aright we said not and were offered 10% off. At this stage we just wanted to go and paid the bill and left. I would have argued the case that the pie was not worth paying for at all but we paid with as reasonable grace as we could muster and left. I don't think we will return. If you travel on the Sudbury to Ashbourne road often and see signs to this pub don't be tempted to try it, you will probably be disappointed. I will re-iterate that no chef should have allowed both attempts at pie out of his or her kitchen. They should be ashamed at this offering, it quite ruined the evening.

We stayed overnight in this charming quirky little hotel, the rooms are small but well arranged and beautifully finished, there is obviously great care taken with all aspects of this excellent little place as it was spotlessly clean with welcoming staff who could not do enough for the guests. We reported an issue in our room, it was checked and we were spoken to within 15 minutes nothing was to much trouble, l would recommend this hotel and restaurant to anyone who wants a romantic or quiet break in a welcoming, friendly spot with good food and good friends. We are planning to return here with friends for another break simply because we had a wonderful time and the atmosphere made you feel relaxed and welcomed like visiting old friends.

We were also visiting The Crown using a Groupon voucher and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Staff were very pleasant and attentive. Although we had a wait for our meals, we had expected them to be a while due to being freshly cooked. However , the waitress was most apologetic about this and they also seemed to be short staffed. Whilst the menu was special for Groupon diners, there was adequate choice. Our starters of scallops and mushrooms were delicious. we both had Hunter's chicken and portions were generous and the food hot. Both the white and rose were perfectly acceptable. Our only regret is that we live some distance away and the restaurant is accessed via country roads otherwise we would visit more frequently. However, we will definitely visit again.

This was our 2nd visit to this lovely country pub. 1st time we had a bar snack which was lovely. This time Sunday lunch. Starters were delicious ie scallops in white wine sauce. Pat'e and toast. Soup, all very very nice. We had pork, beef and the chicken with all the trimmings very nice too. Then dessert.... Chocolate and ginger mouse and white chocolate with berries cheesecake. Absolutely lovely, we couldn't finish them. Good service by pleasant staff. Would recommend this place for good food.

Charming Cafe it is. The coffee is very good. The photos of table laid with cutlery and napkins and lovely decor enticed us drive out to Monsal Head where we know the views are wonderful to have a light lunch. BUT We sat at a table and although the place was empty ( very rainy outside ) the staff didn’t acknowledge us, say hello even or explain it is counter service only. If you are expecting food, think again. No meals, No sandwiches, No baked potatoes or anything substantial, just a few cakes, savoury pies and sausage rolls Most disappointing. Wasted journey. WILL NOT VISIT AGAIN. Hassop Station nearby saved the day fortunately.

great little bakery in the centre of wirksworth, spotlessly clean, and run by a friendly elderly couple, who make everything homemade. cakes, pastries, and homemade pies, and also coffeees, teas, and cold drinks.very reasonable prices, and just up the road from Wirksworth railway station. i always pop in for treats when i catch the train up from Duffield for the afternoon, recomended..! :-)

Lovely cafe in Matlock. There was an excellent selection of vegan options, and the food was delicious. Very well priced for the area, we managed to get a seat outside which added to the experience. The service was also amazing, especially the two teenage girls that were on shift. Will definitely be returning when we return to Matlock. Thank you!

We recently stayed locally for two nights and ate at the Miner’s Arms both nights. Nic was so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious on the first night but on bonfire night, we ordered the greedy Greek platter on Nic’s recommendation and it was excellent! Delicious food, really dog friendly and very welcoming. We’ll be back!
