The Crown Restaurant & Bar in East Hertfordshire

We chose this lovely old pub just outside Stevenage for my father's wake after the funeral. There were about 40 people at the wake. Parking was plentiful, the pub was warm and inviting and the staff were absolutely marvellous. Everything went to plan, there were plenty of bar staff serving drinks and plenty of space in the pub for us all to sit and chat. We had pre-booked a selection of sandwiches and hot bites. These were all delicious (I especially liked the sausage rolls), the sandwiches were lovely with a great selection of fillings, and everyone had plenty to eat. We would like to thank all the staff, both front of house and in the kitchen, for all they did for us. I would not hesitate to recommend this pub for anyone who wants to arrange a special event, no matter what kind of event that is.

Excellent service by Amy and Cameron. The food by chef Ben was absolutely outstanding. Every dish we chose from the new autumn menu was perfectly executed and really tasty. We will be back for more!

We were served by Amy who is a wonderful waitress. She was friendly and very attentive without being pushy.

We celebrated our Golf day at Stevenage Golf course concluding with a fantastic meal at The Crown. The Crown helped us by sponsoring a prize for the raffle so that our charities recieved a great donation to "The "Garden House Hospice" in Letchworth and "The Living Room" Stevenage. Congratulations to the Head Chef, Ben & the team for a great choice of food and your flexibility of menu, along with the front of house staff and the Manager Shani for a great service. Over 40 people sat down to eat and drink, without fail, Everyone said how good the food and service was. Thankyou for a great day and congratulations for a job well done.

We booked an outside area for a birthday celebration on Saturday, the weather was a bit wet, however, Shaney kindly offered at short notice to move us under cover on the patio and even helped us decorate the area. The buffet food we ordered was fantastic and plenty of it. The bar staff were all extremely friendly and very helpful. It all made for a memorable birthday celebration. Thank you, Shaney, Gary, and the hardworking team.

After recent discussions with the regulars and management, thankfully the management have listened and a choice of Ale are now available. This has been a long time coming. Well done to Area manager Steve & management for listening to your regular customers. All we need now are the front windows to be unlocked to let the flies out and all will be good.

Service was brilliant. Amy was very helpful and really pleasant and friendly Our only complaint was the dessert - eton mess with hardly any meringue and the “summer berries “ was blackberries and loads of juice which made it more like a compote. Rest of meal was absolutely delicious. Kids enjoyed their meal although their ice cream was a bit extortionate

Started charging 5 pound service charge. We had a small plate each and sat on the wooden picnic benches outside. No justification in creaming off an extra 5 pound for a very average snack. Good service from the waitress, thank you.

Decided to spend out bank holiday Sunday here for the terrific pub garden and village pub feel. Unfortunately this is where the positive feedback stops. Prices: Being charged different amounts for the same round on several occasions. Food: Ordered some snacks from the quiz night menu. In delivery we were told we shouldn’t have been sever the food as we wasn’t participating in the quiz. Over £20 for a handful of chips and some nachos that was pretty much a bag of tortilla chips with some relish dumped on them. Very poor value. Drinks: Biggest disappointment of the day. Mainly drinking Guinness and neck oil which was served in Brooklyn lager glasses with no life in them. The pub wasn’t what I would describe as busy so no excuses for me. Overall disappointed with our visit and will look elsewhere next time.

Went to the crown after a dog walk for a spot of lunch on Thursday, we sat in the garden which was lovely, we all had the rotisserie chicken which was very tasty. Our server Deanne was amazing, very attentive and looked after us well. Will definitely return, lovely country pub.

To say the service was poor was an understatement. There were 8 of us and despite ordering 30 seconds apart the food for 4 people came 40 minutes before the other 4. When it was queried after 15 minutes of waiting we were advised we were the next table to receive food. We then watched as table after table received food but we didn’t. Then when it queried again we were told that the kitchen was backed up and they were busy. Another explanation of food that is similar is cooked at the same time from different orders was just another excuse. Honesty was required that they had simply messed up but that was not forthcoming. Eventually after seeing more orders come out despite being told we were next our food arrived. The lasagne on the main menu for adults was a joke. It was slightly larger than the child’s lasagne. It was confusing as to which was the adults and child’s portion. Considering the considerable price difference you would expect a larger portion. The adults lasagne should be a small plate option. The manager did eventually arrive and apologise and a refund was offered for the abysmal service. Apparently it was due to having to have Agency staff in the kitchen and it being a sunny day so they were busy. If you can’t cope with the demand do serve food. Whoever oversees this pub needs to really take a good look at it as judging by the reviews this is in decline

Went for dinner last night. The place was busy but tye service was brilliant. The food was lovely. The only thing that let's The pub down is they now add a 10%service charge for all tables. Unfortunately this really has turned me off going again. It's expensive to eat as it is, thus pub is pricey, but to add on for a table of two really takes the biscuit.

My son & I came for lunch today. We chose to sit outside as we had our dogs with us. We ordered the Flat iron chicken, spiced yoghurt, charred broccoli, lemon & new potatoes and the Americana, spicy pepperoni sausage pizza. The chicken was so under cooked that it has to be returned to be cooked through. Unfortunately when it was returned the chicken was better but the new potatoes had been fried so that they were crispy on the outside. So they were no longer new potatoes. I ate what of the chicken I could & left the rest. The Americana pizza was a margherita pizza with a few slices of pepperoni on it. It wasn't home made as it was perfectly round, just like shop brought. It was bland & uninteresting. My son ate 3 pieces & left the rest. When the server came to collect our plates he asked if everything was alright with our food, as he could clearly see it wasn't. My son explained what was wrong with both dishes. The server took the plates away, no apology was offered. We sat outside for a further 20 minutes but no one was interested enough to come out & speak to us about our meals. 2 Starters, 1 pizza, 1 main, 2 Cokes £46. Do yourselves a favour & send you money somewhere else. We won't be back/

Hadn't been in for a few years, thought we would give it a visit. My wife had a roast beef sandwich which she thoroughly enjoyed. Cider and wine, were I felt, on the expensive side compared to others in Stevenage area. Was going to have a packet of crisps but at £1.60p a packet decided against. Nice setting, pleasant staff, service OK, but if your going load your plastic up. Card only.

We booked the Crown for my fathers celebration of his life. Firstly it is so close to Harwood Park Crematorium and secondly for its ambience and very professional staff. They did not disappoint. Can not recomend enough, we had a delicious hot buffet which was fantastic. Service was brilliant, they could not have done us prouder on such a sensitive special occasion. Thank you to the chef and all the amazing staff.

Lovely pub with ample seating areas outside set out into garden 'rooms',and cozy seating inside. Have visited here a couple of times for drinks over the past couple if weeks when out on walks, lovely atmosphere, the staff are always so friendly and welcoming. The food looks and smells amazing although I've yet to eat here but plan too soon! Currently my favourite pub to visit.

Live local and like to pop in, normally for drinks but have eaten here a few times.Nice, local feel, whenever I've eaten food's been good however this tends not to be during peak times. Fresh and good quality. Prices are a bit higher but I think that goes hand in hand with a true country pub. Suspect negative comments are from when the pubs very busy. I've not been able to sit inside for a pint on a few occasions (normally a sunday) when the pubs been booked out for diners. Always plenty of space outside and the heaters are good and it's well covered. Massive garden too with plenty of seats and big play area for the smaller ones.

Excellent meal for my mum's 80th birthday. Seated inside as it was a very wet Saturday lunchtime. Service was excellent and food for the 7 of us was really good. Staff were friendly and worked really hard. The only negative was that most people were sat inside so it was very noisy and difficult to talk. But everyone all commented on how good the food was!

Having grown up in Stevenage and moved away I went for a walk from my mums house in chells said to my husband there used to be a small pub in Aston well we found the crown and what a jewel it is staff absolutely amazing polite nothing is try much trouble food fresh and fantastic this really the gardens again immaculate mums in a wheelchair access for disability is great so all in all amazing thank u all involved in this fantastic establishmentRegards Andy and Troy

Alwful food, expensive and thrown together, nothing was fresh, alwful service, everything was an effort, wont be returning. The only good thing was the kids play area.

I brought my Nan out for a meal and family! Worst food I have had in a long time burger and chips was dry, kids food they couldn’t eat it! Only good thing about this place is the slide!

I've been a regular diner of the crown for over 6 years and have to say it is usually very good. My most recent visit (July 2021) was quite disappointing, My first and second choice dishes on the menu were not available (as a side note it might have been helpful to know this before we had ordered drinks) anyway, I opted for a chicken salad.....which was a huge mistake. Far too many gem lettuce leaves, no spring onion and no green beans as advertised on the menu - essentially it was just lettuce, pepper, cucumber with a few small strips of chicken, certainly not worth the £10 price tag. Service was great as usual, hopefully this experience was just a one-off as I really love this place and I have always enjoyed the meals and atmosphere.

We attended today for a work event and had use the private function room. The service was excellent, staff were very attentive and they went above and beyond and nothing was too much trouble. Damiano is a credit to the pub! Food was also fabulous! And I would recommend this pub for corporate events, private functions and it’s also great for families as they have a great large outside area and play park. There is something to everyone!

You could not fault the Sunday roast and drinks and i have never seen a place with so many staff but they just seemed to stand talking and never gave a good service atany point and the place was not that busy. If they can manage the staff to work well then this would be a great place to eat.

The Crown has been my go to place for the Euros, buzzing atmosphere and great service! Definitely recommend.

We've attended for every Euro game so far and the service has been excellent. The staff are friendly, professional and dealt with the high demand for drinks/food astonishingly well. The atmospear was absolutely electric, which made the overall experience even better! Unbelieveable huge TV with incredible sound as well.

Great to see a pub busy but they clearly could not manage the volume and there was no organization at all. I felt sorry for the people who had booked but didnt get a table . Not the cheapest pub around ( Pepsi £3.10 !!!)Hopefully Wednesday will be alot calmer now they have had a few practice runs at it!!!

Came here with a few friends for the Saturday night England game. On arrival, we were sent to find where we would be sitting and we're told 'sit anywhere in this section'. Well, thank god we arrived at 4pm because people who had booked tables were queuing round the whole establishment and being turned away because they were letting people walk in and sit where they wanted. The Crown very clearly let in way too many people and just couldn't handle it. At 7:30pm, every single drink (including soft drinks) disappeared from the app. When people politely went to the bar to question when it was coming back on we were told 'if you continue to talk to me like this, we will kick you out' .. for asking a ... question.... The younger servers were brilliant and polite and constantly apologised to everyone for the attitude and behaviour of the management team. They advised they had over an hours wait for drinks hence turning the app off. The app didn't get turned back on until after the England game had finished. People were going down to queue outside the bar as instructed by management but they then seemed to pick and choose who would and wouldn't be getting drinks. I waited down there for over an hour until someone actually served me. If you want to follow the COVID rules, this place is NOT for you. No social distancing, no enforcement of any rules at all actually. The set up was brilliant and the atmosphere was great but the backlash they got from customers was well deserved. Management couldn't even crack a smile on arrival and the bloke who I presumes owns the pub (old, grey and short) had the most disgusting attitude of the night.

We had booked a table for the England game and the Crown did not disappoint. We had a fantastic table with a great view and had no issues with the service what so ever. There was a brilliant atmosphere and the servers were doing a great job trying to keep up with the huge demand for food and drinks. A great evening was had!

Best pub about to watch the football. Screen is huge, service has been very good throughout, atmosphere unreal! These guys a doing a great job! We’ll be back for sure!

Absolute place to be during the euros !! Great atmosphere, great service, the foods spot on especially the burgers !! Big screen. The whole outdoor set up is brilliant, can’t fault !!. Looking forward to returning this week for the semi final.

I regularly visit The Crown for business, social and food with family and can confidently say that the food is always fantastic but my last visit has soured my opion significantly. We arrived 10 minutes early for our booking and were seated straight away. It then took 30 mins after being seated to place a drinks order, we actually had to ask to order starters when the drinks arrived as we hadn't been given the menu.... 40 minutes later the starters arrived and we managed to order more drinks - the starters were absolutely fantastic. Another 45 minutes passed and we asked about the main course and ordered another drink. 20 minutes on, no drink, no main course, no update. 30 minutes later after asking two other members of staff what was going on I went to the bar cancelled everything else and asked to settle up, then after another 10 minutes I had to go and ask again to settle the bill. After this two seperate members of staff came to our table and told me our food was almost ready!!!! Eventually after insisting we didn't want the food anymore and booking a cab and table elsewhere we got the bill and an appology.My advise, don't bother booking a table just turn up and order on the app from the garden. Your drinks still take 20 minutes to turn up but at least you'll something.

We booked our wedding reception here and it was absolutely amazing, they kept in contact with us all the way up to our day and allowed us in to decorate the tables the morning of the wedding. The staff, food & service was amazing all day. Will definitely be back and recommending to all friends & family! Thank you for a brilliant day :)

We had a table booked for the quarter finals and the atmosphere was perfect. The best pub around for watching the football and the foods quality as well.

A great set up for the Euros with a massive screen. Shame I can’t say the same about the service. For most of the game last night, they were not taking any orders for drinks because they couldn’t keep up. No one was able to get a drink for over an hour and many orders were cancelled and refunded. People who had table bookings were refused entry because of walk-ins who had been let in earlier. The staff are unbelievably rude, we were threatened to be removed for asking if they knew how long it would be until they would be taking orders again. On entry to the pub, the two men managing the car park were rude, blunt, and not welcoming. We arrived early, and were told to just ‘sit anywhere in this section’ so clearly no organisation in terms of table bookings. They had clearly overbooked their space as there were queues all the way round the outside of the pub, and these people had bookings! Such a shame as it could have been such a lovely pub, but some of the staff let it down.

Not a good experience overall. Twice we has 4 pints dropped on us by the server. Nothing offered as an apology. Not able to order tap water on the app so need to go in the bar which you are not suppose to do. So greeted by staff in a rude wayat the door. £4 for a portion of very small chips.

Had a great afternoon and evening at The Crown for the England v Germany game. So well organised, great environment, top service in a professionally put together venue.

The setup and staff were amazing, can’t fault anything about the experience. The screen was perfect without any delays/faults. Would definitely be interested in going back again

The pub and gardens are beautiful, lovely location, really friendly staff who were lovely with my chatty three year old.The food was pretty disappointing we were looking forward to it being cooked outside.The chicken which you have a choice of being with bbq/peri peri would have been so much better if it had been glazed and cooked with the sauce instead of served on the side in plastic pots.The chips tasted of old oil and the rest of the food was all pretty average There is so much potential so I really hope there can be some positive changes made with the food

We visited this pub for the first time today and we were not very impressed. To be charged nearly £14 for a chicken roast dinner, you would expect a pretty decent and ‘complete’ meal. Roast is advertised to include bread sauce, Yorkshire pudding and chipolatas. ALL 3 WERE MISSING from all of our plates (x3 people). We spoke to the waitress, she apologised and said they were out of Yorkshire puddings and she forgot to tell us when we ordered; no mention of the other items. She then asked if we would like to see the manager. Someone came over (I don’t think it was the manager) and asked if we would like more veg. She also said she would get us the chipolatas, plus a couple extra to compensate. We agreed to the compromise and continued to eat our meals. We finished our meals and still no chipolotas. We asked to see the manager and a different person came over. We complained about the lack of food and he offered us a 20% discount (about £8 in total). Upon getting home, we dis not feel the meal and service was worth anywhere near the £30 we ended up paying. I appreciate we’re not talking mega money here but that’s besides the point. Had we known the items were sold old/not ready in the first place, we would have ordered something different. I can’t say we will rush back to eat at The Crown again. I don’t think COVID can take the blame for this bad experience either.

One of the worst Sunday dinners we have had in a long time. Seasonal veg was cabbage only, no other vegetables. Had run out of roast beef so only option was chicken. Had run out of Yorkshire puddings. Cauli cheese was an extra and had little to jo cheese on it. Politely Mentioned our disappointment, we left more than we ate, and the only gesture was to remove the optional service charge. To add to this table was sticky and toilets were dirty. Would not recommend or return

Whatever you do, do not complain or send the food back because the staff will completely ignore. We waited 25 mins for the. To clear our plates - very pleasant in the intense heat - and when you ask for the promised complimentary dessert to make up for the poor standard, the waitress treats you like a thief trying to rip them off. The final insult came when she asked my husband if he wished to pay for me as well as himself. Needless to say we left very disappointed and hungry.

We arrived slightly earlier than booked table for. This wasn't a problem, shown to table and drinks order taken. Followed by menus and drinks. Very friendly staff, attentive and helpful. Food was delicious. Steak and trimmings excellent value for money.

We booked a table outside and it was perfect just enough shade on a very warm sunny Saturday. Our waitress was Elisa and she was brilliant, very friendly and a credit to the Crown. All our meals we're excellent and we all enjoyed ourselves. The big screen for the Euros looked amazing and I can see it being a big hit as the tournament progresses. We will definitely be back again.

Nice place, booked a table for 6 last Saturday. Food not bad, disappointed that the 2 portions of garlic pizza bread - was dry & no garlic, pointed out to the waitress and she said he must have forgot! The service was okay, however would expect to be asked wether we wanted sauces/dressings when our main meal was served and not have to get the staffs attention as our meals were getting cold! Definite room for improvement.

Went with family for my birthday. Have to day excellent service fabulous food. Francesca was brilliant nothing too much trouble. Definitely recommend. Fabulous time.

Came for lunch... the whole thing was just shy of £100, we had a couple of warm drinks in the scorching sun.... the beer garden itself is amazing but the menu isn’t good at all... no salad option even in this heat!! All our drinks were warm even the pints!! Kids were dying for a cold drink and given warm fruit shoots and told drinks are kept on the side not in the fridge!! The app thing is a good idea but takes far too long for a warm pint costing £5 a pop.... makes me glad I’ve done the garden up so I can sip ice cold beer for nothing... such a shame has the makings of a gold mine just lacks any real quality

Very poor service. Had to leave our seats 3 times,once to ask if someone would take our mains order, then again for someone to take our dessert order (which incidentally they had run out of) and then to go and ask for sugar when coffees were presented without. Felt a bit like being in Mc Donalds to be honest. To top it all off, when the bill came they had added 10% service charge on! Wont be rushing back.

Arrived at about 12.30 on Sunday and it wasn’t too busy but literally tripping over staff. Told to go to the App tables at the back, couldn’t get the App to work so went looking for help. Received a shrug from one of the many staff member stood around doing nothing, so we left......What a shame, lovely pub in a great setting; but......

Decided to come to the crown at last minute ,a lovely man sat us down who we watched touched everyone as they come in or he greeted concidering we are ment to be social distancing, we like the crown we really do, BUT it’s so sad to see how the management and staff are making this pub go under, the food was ok but nothing special, steak was actually like chewing a shoe and the chips arnt what they say on the menu their just normal chips, the staff inside done nothing but stand about, Elisa was our waitress and she was miserable and made my wife feel quite uncomfortable with how she ranted to us about her work managers, and work pals, which we found quite unprofessional, wownt be returning any time soon.

The setting was nice and staff friendly but the food a big disappointment. We had squid starters which were massively over seasoned followed by a pizza that was ok and a rotisserie chicken, which from the description sounded gorgeous, but in fact turned out to be dry and tough. I couldn’t eat it. The chips were lovely and crunchy, but again, way over seasoned, and the garnish, some very limp rocket. The waiter seemed a bit taken a back when I gave my assessment of the food (I tried to do it as politely as I could) and he offered a “I’m sorry about that”. This criticism is intended to allow the venue to improve and thrive - too many people don’t give honest feedback and businesses fail without realising why.

Conveniently, outdoor seating opened in April the day before my birthday so my parents, my fiance and I went for lunch.It was all very covid secure, I booked a table but they asked us to do track and trace upon arrival and we wore masks until we were seated and inside when we needed the toilet. We sat sat in the lower terrace which was covered and had patio heaters which we could turn on at our leisure.We shared an array of starters which included, squid, humus, brie bites and the pork and duck sausage roll, all were delicious. For main I had a steak which was a little tough but to be fair I asked it to be medium well. The waiter messed up our order as we asked for sweet potato fries so ended up with both but obviously we weren't charged. As there is always room for dessert I had the raspberry arctic roll, it didn't disappoint.The staff were friendly and attentive and I had actually dined here before one summer on the higher deck and would visit again.

Couldn’t let such an incredible lunch go without giving it a top review. Had the roast dinner vegetarian option with sweet potato and lentil wellington. Absolutely outstanding! My son had beef which was succulent and perfectly cooked. My daughter in law had the roast chicken with chipolatas and it practically fell off the bone. So much food on the plate filled with roast potatoes, beautifully cooked veg, huge Yorkshire and tonnes of the most delicious gravy I’ve ever eaten! All followed by amazing puddings but the sticky toffee is well worth a big round of applause! Thank you Crown Pub Aston End for your excellent food and outstanding service today. You made this family Sunday lunch a wonderful day! Booking in again very soon!!!

Lovely food and service. Got here as the kitchen closed but they still done us a bite of food which was delicious. Always happy to come here and service with a smile is always appreciated.

The venue to look at is very nice and they’ve clearly spent a lot on the outdoor eating but the food really isn’t great. Today we ordered two lasagnes. They honestly tasted like microwave meals this is no exaggeration. It was like tomato soup with layers of pasta. The only flavour was tomato. Even in the past when I’ve had pizza there it’s just never been great, under cooked and not seasoned. I keep giving this place another chance only to be disappointed. It’s a shame because the venue is nice and the staff are friendly but you go there for food and it’s under mediocre. They need to make some serious changes fast. Hope they read this review so they can make the much needed changes otherwise they’re going to lose business.

This pub has a great set up for outdoor eating spread over a large area on different levels. They have a good menu and our food arrived quickly, it was well presented and delicious. Service from all staff was excellent in particular our waitress Francesca who was really friendly, helpful and attentive. We will definitely return soon

This pub is beautiful and in a lovely location, the terrace was very comfortable with outdoor heaters. Food was delicious and service was excellent thanks to our waitress Francesca who was extremely attentive during our meal, and served us with a smile! Will definitely be returning soon.

Today we visited for a family Sunday roast and we were not disappointed! Food was lovely, good sized portions. Our waitress Fran was very efficient and accommodated our dog with water and treats. Would recommend and will be visiting again!

I went for dinner and drinks here tonight with two of my friends. We had such a lovely night, food was really nice and came out quickly and hot! We also had a great waiter called Jack! He was lovely, a great laugh and couldn't do more to help! We are already planning our next trip back there!

We had a lovely Sunday afternoon here, the park area is perfect and safe for the kids. Food is delicious and service was great! We had a young lady called Kaci, bringing our drinks etc out and she was lovely and friendly and very helpful. Definitely recommend

Had to visit again following my last visit. Today we were served by Kiera. Top service, friendly and great banter. What more can I say. Service with a smile... well I think so, she was wearing a mask. Drinks were out within minutes, food took no longer than 20, which I though was great considering how packed the place was. 10/10 would recommend. Not just Keira, but all staff were great.

Our server was Jodie, we had a fantastic exsperience, we have been a few times and have had mixed views but love to alwais come back as myself and my partner know that they are a very busy pub but alwais have outstanding food, Jodie was very polite, took the time to alwais check on us and see if we wanted more drinks, Jodie made us feel very welcome and had a laugh and a joke with us which is what we love when out, I believe she was a new waitress yet knew a lot for not being their long and the knowledge. Well done Jodie and thankyou to the crown for a great time and fantastic food will most definitely be returning.

Had a great Saturday night at the crown pub, jodie and Taylor always made sure we were happy and had drinks flowing, would definitely recommend and will definitely be back soon!!

What more could I have asked for. It was a nice, sunny Saturday and I booked to treat the other half for a nice lunch. Sun was beaming, tables were packed. Looked like people missed the pubs.Lovely staff all round so I feel like it is my duty to praise them for it, as it all to easy to leave negative reviews. Order was taken within minutes, drink shortly followed with a good waiting time for the food. Pints were flowing, nice and cold, food swiftly following nice and hot, cooked spectacularly.Couldn't have asked for a better setting and I'm happy to say the other half loved it just as much.Thank you team, keep up the great work.

A first trip out since lockdown rules were relaxed celebrating a family birthday. Picked a Wednesday lunchtime expecting it to be quieter than other times but surprisingly busy. We anticipated a difference maybe to menu or quality even service since our last visit due to the enforced shut down but apart from service being a bit slow for initial drinks all other aspects were good. We had chosen from the menu on line prior to arrival and waitress Elisa was available within an acceptable time limit. It's fair to say getting up to speed & offering a full menu will take a while after such a long shutdown but no complaints here, just great to get out again.

I have been to The Crown several times since it has opened. The first 2 times the food was brilliant, although they had no cider on the 2nd visit it was still enjoyable. The staff were friendly and my waitress both times, Becky was so hospitable, friendly and welcoming, even though we could see the staff were really busy. Unfortunately our 3rd visit over the Bank Holiday left a lot to be desired. Staff looked miserable, drinks were delayed and we felt rushed to leave. Our waitress Elissa was nowhere near as friendly as our previous host and only seemed to smile when she brought us our bill, including a service charge, with her name signed on it. Was very disappointed as we had brought our friends with us after raving about how wonderful the pub is. Perhaps more staff is needed on bank holidays to improve general service and keep staff smiling like with our previous visits. Otherwise a pretty pub with a nice atmosphere

My server Taylor was very friendly and attentive, couldn’t have asked for a better evening . Food was of excellent standard. Definitely be back for more 😊

Had a lovely battered haddock, chips & mushy peas with the trimmings at The Crown, Aston End. Lots of outdoor seating with large parasols & heaters. Tables being looked after by the lovely polite young lady named Kiera. Will certainly go again.

We were served by the lovely Kiera, (who I believe was the manageress) I think they were understaffed at the time, but despite being extremely busy, they all kept the waiting times to a minimum. The food was lovely and we were kept nice and warm outside by the heaters under the humongous umbrellas.

Not one to write a review but the service we had was appalling. A table of 6, outside, we had food and drinks. Service was so slow that we were ordering our next drinks as our current drinks were being served, and even the serving staff weren’t able to take our order! So they would send off for another member of staff to come and take the order, which would take ages to come (20-30 mins!) and when they came over one time the lady said ‘I’ve been told to take your order?’ Which I thought was so rude!I would be able to understand if they were busy and rushed off their feet but no - there were so many staff (6 or 7) inside just standing around whilst we were waiting to place an order for a drink. Spoken to a few friends and they’ve all had the same experience - such a shame as food was really nice and the garden area is lovely!Safe to say I won’t be returning.

Popped in on the off chance we could catch a table for an impromptu Saturday night date. My other half was told upon arrival “there are some tables at the top, order on the app” - which should’ve been the biggest hint of what was to come! We found the area with said tables, many of which were over occupied, and found an empty one to order from. We ordered from the app, food took 30 minutes and was cold (one dish was brought out wrong so they took both back, but appeared to bring the correct dish back again after wandering round with it for 5 minutes) and when we asked where our drinks were, we were told the bar was busy - food before drinks is just a no. We had finished eating when the drinks arrived.With regards to Covid there was no enforcement of social distancing and nobody checking customers had used the track and trace. Only our 2nd visit but definitely won’t be coming back, don’t open an additional area if you aren’t willing to serve it properly or make it safe.

This is my local, sadly. Came for a pint. Arrived at 6pm waited an age in a short queue to be told what to do. Found a table. Ordered drinks via the ridiculous mosaic app at 6.15. Ordered food at 6.20 realised that they were busy so ordered more drinks at the same time.Food arrived, pretty cold, and incomplete order,before the cutlery and definitely before the drinks at 6.45. Chased the drinks. Told the bar is very busy. Eventually both rounds of drinks came at once. Beer flat. Bottles of coke ordered tap coke delivered.Manager’s response to other recent reviews on here is that ‘we’re a 450 seat restaurant’ like their greed is an excuse for providing terrible service. I’d use other descriptive terms but I doubt tripadvisor would allow them. 10% service charge added to order. What for? Rubbish service and long wait? Thanks very much.Disappointing beyond belief. Won’t be back.

We had a great lunch at the Crown, Aston End today, in such a beautiful setting. We felt Covid safe at all times. Although the service was a little slow, the Sirloin and Swordfish were delicious and we noted that waiting staff were conscientiously looking after their customers at all of the outside seating areas. Our server Elisa worked tirelessly during the time we were there; nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for a great experience.

We went on a Sunday and the place was staffed with so many people - not one person had a smile on their face and looked like they didn't want to be there . It took them 10 minutes to even acknowledge we were waiting - no apologies for waiting or even letting us know they would be with us shortly. We were pointed to a table to sit. They informed us they were out of stock of all ciders except two and only have coke and lemonade soft drinks. Really??? Food came quite quickly and did taste very good however there was no communication, no enjoy your meal, no asking how it was. When it was time to pay the bill, they informed us they are not accepting cash. Now I completely understand why you couldn't take cash in a pandemic however it would be good for them to have a sign up or at least communicated. We paid the bill and the waitress walked away, didn't even say bye or anything. It really lowered the mood for my family who was looking forward to spending time together after a whole year apart. So disappointing

Okay pubs have been shut for how long?? And in my opinion have had plenty of time to prep to re open , they should have known how busy they would be especially if we had any sign of glorious weather!!!! They should have sought provisions of extra staff, drinks , food surely no pub could be that naive to not think they would be busy .....I guess not!! The crown advertised a bbq (which it wasn’t really) on insta so we though we would give a go, any way get there all well and good we find a table ....then someone comes out and screams don’t order anything on the app for 5 mins wait is at least an hour for drinks , we are just so busy!! Ok so we waited 10 and then ordered , 50 mins later our food starts no come ...no drinks ..... My daughters £13 burger n chips looks ever so sad for the price no salad no onion rings literally a burger and fries !! My youngest daughters roast dinner .... no cutlery !!!! 10 mins later hubby has to ask for knives and forks 20 mins later the drinks come ,....sorry no dark fruits Really why not say earlier close the option on the app???!!!! I told the girl to pop back as hubby was in the loo .....I didn’t know what drink he wanted instead....15 mins later still no girl to get his order ....our dinners had still not arrived!!!! So we said sod this!!! I went and got us all in the car and he went to complain .....to be fair a refund was given but no apology they didn’t really care just refunded and basically said see ya! Will never ever return!!! If I owned this pub I’d have a full team just working the bar in some kind of system ....clearly their just were not enough staff and this blows my mind the amount of money they would have taken in .... young 18 year olds are begging for jobs!!!! I’d have run it like a military operation, cultery and sachet sauces taken as soon as I had a table number order, it’s was honestly run so so bad!! Any way hubby and I went to burger box in the old town got a beautiful burger n chips £9 each for a meal with a drink and portion was huge !!!

Took 15 minutes to get us to the correct table! Been here for 50 minutes and still haven’t got our drinks. When drinks did arrive they had one of the drinks wrong. Still no sign of our food. Staff seem irritated and shouting not finding the correct tables.

Had the burger and chips! What can I say wow absolutely loved it! The crispy onions along with the the salad really made the burger amazing.

My partner and I ordered the crabocado burger and the vegan burger for our mains, and the buttermilk chicken to start. All courses were clearly given a lot of time by the chef(s) in both taste and presentation, and the service was great. Will definitely be returning again!

I had booked the Crown for my birthday as it is a local and I had seen the advertisement on their Facebook for the "crabacado " burger.We got to the pub, were sat at our table and waited to be served. Apart from one other table of drinkers, we were the only people in the pub. (A shame as it is normally very nice!)I had to make myself seen to be served (again, we were the only table) and when ordering food were told the burger I wanted wasn't available. Our server didn't seem to be bothered that I was disappointed (no apology). We ordered and got our food.We had finished our drinks during the meal and again I had to shout across to the waitress to get her attention. Once we had ordered the drinks she brought them over and spilt one over my husband and his food.She took his meal away (burger and fries) and replaced the bun and fries but not the burger. We decided not to stay for dessert as the service was appalling. Such a shame as we used to come here a lot and have been used to much better service.

The person who seemed to be the manager was quite abrupt with us when we arrived, didn’t give us a chance to tell her we had a table booked before barking at us to complete track and trace! Ordered food, burger and chicken, which came rather quickly which suggest to me it has been pre cooked and reheated!! The egg in the chicken ceaser salad had hair on it and no check back was completed. Overall not the best meal out.

We’ve come to the crown on a number of occasions and the food is always great! However tonight it was amazing and the service from Lisa was absolutely amazing. Would strongly recommend for anyone in the Stevenage area as a great country pub!

Went out with my friend to celebrate her birthday. Our waitress, Elisa, was truly amazing. She went out of her way to help me so much.I'm highly allergic to carrots and when my main came with carrot on, she sorted it right away. New food. She found a candle to sing happy birthday to my friend and she went out of her way to make sure our evening was smooth.Elisa went above and beyond her roll and we loved her for it.thank you for making the evening so special for us.

It was a beautiful day and the last before my daughter returned to school after 6 months. So I decided to take her for lunch and sit outside as I knew that the garden at The Crown is beautifully laid out. There are huge umbrellas as well if the weather becomes inclement. My daughter had a beautifully prepared and cooked pizza, done in a special pizza oven, and I had a most tasty salad with humous, grilled haloumi, falafel And several other tasty Mediterranean bits. Wine, beer and fruit shoot, £27. Service was first rate from our waitress Elisa and we felt very safe and comfortable. Give yourself a treat, go to The Crown

Fab meal with brilliant service. The staff were lovely and food was great. They even made a special pudding for our little ladies birthday which was a wonderful surprise and made her day. And the little note on our receipt was lovely.

Had to pay a deposit, which would have been forfeited if we had left! Told to wait for waiter to take order, waited 30 minutes, then told that orders taken at bar! The menu had been re-written with very limited choice, a couple of salads, cheese burgers and a tiny steak - the cheese burger and chips was £10.50! Waited 1.5 hours to finally get food, with 3 small children. The bill came with a service charge added automatically and when we asked for it to be removed, the very young staff had to rush back to the person in charge - who made no appearance, nor give any apology! Beware folks.

Our friend booked a table on 25th august for 9 people for dinner with a time slot of 7-9pm. We arrived with face mask and looking for hand sanitiser but non to be found, nobody else were wearing mask specially the staff. It made me think of what happened to covid19?Anyway lets go to the main reason why we were there “food and service experience“. Terrible. Why? Because, to start they kept on checking up on you for a drink order and as soon as you ordered, it then takes forever to be served. Food specially, my husband were getting agitated as he gets very hungry waiting for our food to arrived not to mention he’s been asking every server he finds every approximately 10 minutes...but alas food arrives at their own timing. My husband ordered a steak and it has arrived very cold on a cold plate my husband tried to look around for server to complain but of course everyone gets busy and he is very hungry so he decided to eat the cold meat anyway...and when 1 server came he mentioned the issue but no reconciliation been done. My humus salad was very dry and tasteless, the balls that I don’t know what they are called was hard and dry and tasteless...i have had to drown everything with vinegar to be able to eat it. And the service charge was surprisingly expensive....Never again to come back in this place.

A really lovely meal, great food had and fantastic service from Elisa. It was raining but all kept very dry under the huge umbrellas with heaters. Thank you!

I booked a meal tonight for mine and my brothers family as a treat having not seen him since lockdown started, and ended up being embarrassed to have brought them somewhere with such awful service. After the confusing checking in system, where you go online to book at table, in itself confusing since I’d already booked, but apparently this is the same thing, which you only find out when you ask someone, it’s not clearly explained anywhere or by anyone when you arrive. We finally sit at a table just outside the bar area, after the waitress unhelpfully pointed at a general area from inside the premises. We were told this area had table service. At the point of being shown the vague direction of tables we could sit at, no one offered any menus, so we sat at the table with no clue how this was going to work. Maybe it’s all explained on the helpful QR code loosely hung on a poster... nope. There was the online menu but no explanation if we had to do the ordering online or if we should just wait for someone to serve us. But we couldn’t all get the menu on our phones and I could see paper menus dotted about on other peoples tables, so I thought I’d get us a few for the table. I ask a waitress who was clearing the table next to us where the menus were and she half turned around and told me they were inside, nothing more specific or helpful than that, they’re just inside. I then find the kids menus inside, and ask the inside waitress if there are adult menus available, she then asks me if I’ve run out of menus (?!), goes off and comes back and tells me they’re being printed out... not ‘wait there and I’ll get you some’, or ‘take a seat and I’ll bring some over’. I decide to get all my family and go. I’m not about to spend my hard earned money where people clearly have no interest in looking after their customers. Awful awful, but thankfully short, experience and wildly infuriating to deal with people who care so little about their work. I thought I’d hit the jackpot by finding a pub close to our new home, with a lovely garden and play area for the kids. But I really would be hesitant to ever visit this pub again. Such a shame.

Booked days ahead for the Tuesday Help our to eat out’ offer. Turned up and we could not book in or find a staff member for some time. The queue was very long and all customers, those like us who booked, others who hadn’t and those wanting drinks all queued towards the bar. No one was at the welcome station so other customers were also left confused, squashed together waiting for assistance. Eventually had a waiter help us find our table who was really helpful and dealt with so many other customers issues whilst trying to serve the food, bless him, if it wasn’t for him so many would have left. Only other issue was no one except my party were wearing face coverings whilst ordering inside at the bar, nor was there any Perspex screens to protect staff. Food was nice but won’t be going back whilst Covid 19 is still a risk.
