We met friends for lunch here at this lovely old pub and the food was incredible! Will definitely return.

Not been here for a while so we decided it was about time for another visit. tried to book for Sunday but was fully booked sadly but understandable. 4 of us went, 2 had the Burgers 1 had fish and i had the steak pie. everyone agreed the food was excellent. service was good and the staff attentive despite the fact they were, as normal very busy. we will be booking for Sunday lunch in the next few weeks. A beautiful pub with great food and good overnight accommodation. Steve, Sue and all the staff looked after us and ensured that everything was perfect from lunch to our overnight stay and breakfast in the morning. I had lunch in this gorgeous pub yesterday with my husband, my his partner. The food was absolutely delicious, 2 x goats cheese and pear salads, 2 x Wagyu burgers with chrispy onion rings and chunky chips. Eton Mess and apple crumble with custard to finish. We sat in the beautiful garden surrounded by glorious flowers, and were the last to leave before the pub shut before evening service. The staff were absolutely amazing and service was impeccable, I don't know the name of our lovely waitress but she was a young blonde girl...so attentive and made our lunch experience all the more enjoyable. Thank you so much, highly recommend this wonderful pub!

Went here because of the reviews for Sunday lunch,wise to book as very busy,we were lucky as they accommodated us without a booking and it lived up to its rating,food , atmosphere and staff excellent,will return.

We took our elderly mum for lunch and it’s not our first visit. Lovely surroundings and the food is always excellent. What sets this apart is the staff. They all tend to be younger people and their level of service is exceptional. I have mentioned this to the landlord previously and wanted to put it in a review. Outstanding from start to finish. Try and book rather than turn up as you will get a drink without booking but it gets very busy and you wouldn’t want to miss out.

A really lovely lunch. We were all very happy with our food choices! Nice and hot, fresh salad, great chips. Amazing portion sizes (possibly too big as we’d fancied a dessert but were too full). We visited on New Year's eve for dinner this lovely well maintained traditional country pub and everything as always was so very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful througout the evening. The menu was varied with very reasonable prices. Our food was served piping hot and the best of ingredients used. This pub is well supported by locals and is very close to a beautiful historic town called Saffron Walden.

This is a traditional pub. We came for lunch. The menus are chalked on the board but , having chosen, we were told that the menu on our board was in fact the Sunday menu. So we had to go into another room to read another board. No table menus were offered. Slightly irritating. Dietary needs catered for. Lovely fish and chips . As seems common these days too few staff so long waits or having to look for them. Despite that would go back as good menu, good tasting food and friendly staff.

Our first lunch out for over 3 months! So good to be welcomed by Steve and Sue and to see the hard work they had done to follow the guidelines for everyone's safety. One way system, well spaced tables, hand-sanitiser, etc. We had fish and chips, which was as good as ever, followed by apple crumble and ice cream. There is a large outside patio for eating and drinking, as well as a dining room also with well spaced seating, separate from the tables in the bar area. During 'lockdown' the pub supported the local community with a good selection of takeaway meals, especially Sunday lunches.

Well what can we say? we are going stir crazy at home and then we see that The Crown is doing takeaway. As someone who works in the catering Industry we all know how difficult it is to transport food and maintain its quality. All we can say is WOW. We have been fans of the food at the Crown For years and they have done an awesome job of preparing that awesome feeling you get when you visit but it was at home. WE are so looking forward to visiting again . but until then we will hopefully be getting another takeaway next week. Maybe even get a portion of their legendary Peppercorn Sauce. Thank you so much for a bit of normality.

We always receive the warmest welcome and are treated as family every time we visit this wonderful pub. Steve and the team do a fabulous job of offering a wonderful ale selection and superb food. We will definitely be back.

I visited this pub recently with a group of 20 walkers for lunch: welcome, service, surroundings, atmosphere and food were all great. We booked ahead which no doubt helped. This is the third such visit we have made to the Crown and I hope to return many more times.

Two of us for a Sunday Pub Lunch - if you like a traditional old fashioned friendly pub this is the place - if you want a fancy gastro pub it may not be to your liking. I had garlic mushrooms for starter - my partner white bait and roast pork - I had a goats cheese and pear salad. Everything was good - hot plates (as appropriate) good sized portions - freshly cooked - tasty dishes full of flavour - very reasonably priced. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. This was an after Christmas lunch with my father as we had not managed to visit during the festive period. As always the pub was busy and the food excellent. We chose the fish and chips, and these were excellent portion sizes, with a good chunk of fish in delicious batter. There was a small salad to supplement the peas (one mushy and one garden) and it all went down very nicely. Not able to have a dessert as I was too full, but the choice did look excellent including an Egg Nog ice cream.

We called in here on the off chance without a booking. Every table was laid out for lunch and everything was booked up. However, the lady behind the bar checked to see which table had the latest booking and agreed to let us have their table. The staff couldnt have been nicer and then the food arrived which was absolutely fab. Its no wonder you cant move in this place on a Sunday as the food is superb. I have eaten a lot of Roasts in various pubs and restaurants and this is up there with the best. In addition, the cost is fair and the services is excellent. if your in the area give, it a go. PS and they give you more gravy if you ask.

Hadn't been to the Crown for quite some time, so thought we would give it a try for lunch last Sunday. Four Roasts were on offer, and between us we tried the Beef, Pork and Lamb. All were excellent and nicely cooked. Lovely desserts also, all at very reasonable prices. The Crown was very busy during our visit, and rightly so! Also sampled the Woodfordes Wherry, which was served straight from the cask.

Another really good lunch with family. Lovely hot soup ,well cooked pub food.. the deserts looked great. Huge portions of well cooked food. At such a reasonable price. The Crown is a great place for our family to get together for lunch. We have been many times now and have never been disappointed.

We have visited several times for lunch, midweek and for Sunday lunch. The food is always fantastic and well worth our half our drive. Our latest visit was for Sunday Lunch. Most of us went for the roast beef which was delicious with plentiful well cooked vegetables and we added a portion of cauliflower cheese. The roast potatoes are always crispy unlike most other pubs we have tried. This was followed by excellent home made puds which were also large portions, particularly the toffee apple crumble.

Our kind of pub. No pretentious menus or calling itself gastro and thus doubling its prices. Here, what you see is what you get.

The Crown has been a great find. Our son lives in Saffron Walden so the Crown is very convenient for us. The staff are incredibly friendly and their service levels cannot be bettered. We usually have a family lunch here as the pub is both dog and baby friendly.

The Crown hosted a meal for 40 guests for son's wedding. Staff were fabulous, the venue was nicely set up and the food was outstanding with several options including vegetarian. We would heartily recommend The Crown, and can see why it is so popular.

The Crown has the finest pub grub we have ever tasted. The pub itself is full of character. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food is really delicious with a good choice. We have been going to the Crown for many years and it never fails to please. It can be Christmas, Jazz night (every Wednesday) or just a lunch it always is a pleasure to eat there or be entertained. We would highly recommend the Crown.

Popped in for Sunday lunch. It had been a while since our last lunch here! This place was very busy as it always was and obviously still is !! Staff seemed to have it all under control though. We ordered drinks at the bar. Great selection of ales if that’s your bag. We had a gluten free peroni and a pint of lager, and ordered a lovely, and not expensive bottle of red wine. Food was ordered, coeliacs are catered for, gluten free Yorkshire pudding yes they do (gluten free Yorkshire puddings)which was the size of a tennis ball!! Well almost!! I had vegetarian but roast which was outstanding and home made. What was good to see was plenty of vegetables and the size of the roast potatoes was perfect crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. We definitely will not be leaving it so long next time. we had been to this before but at christmas for a works do....four of us went.. staff really friendly... lovely atmosphere... good selection of food and all hot and tasty... we had lasagne, curry and cod fillet.. absolutely lovely not a bit left on the plates... we also had eton mess and cheesecake for dessert.. it might be an idea if you want to eat hear book ti first.

The crown little Walden what can I say..... amazing country pub with the best home cooked food, ale straight from the barrel and not a bad gin and tonic. My boyfriend and I are regulars at this little country gem, wether it’s popping in for a few beers on a Friday night or sitting down to a yummy roast on Sundays after a long dog walk! Fantastic country pub serving great home cooked food (you can tell as the menu has the usual pub favourites but some cracking unusual dishes as well) in a lovely setting. A proper country pub, dog friendly with excellent attentive staff. As so many pubs are struggling, you can see how well this pub is regarded as its busy but having said that doesn’t feel like it! A must for country pub lovers who want excellent food at a great price!!

As is common these days our food was mostly pre-prepared and heated on the premises. not the worst I've had but too expensive. house wine was supermarket cheapy @ 400% mark up. but to top it all as we were dining a large dog came round sniffing us, the table and our belongings. the staff did not seem to think this was a problem as "the dog belonged to a customer and was in here every day" Not a place I will ever go back too. Shame as the location is excellent.

Fantastic Sunday lunch eaten outside in the sun .. Arrived early and sampled the cider before ordering the food . We had one lamb roast and one pork roast ... waiting time was good as food is cooked fresh to order . Plates arrived with meat , Yorke, roasties and gravy . Veg came in separate individual dishes and plenty of it ... all cooked to perfection. Sweets were just as nice too .

On the first night of a weekend break in nearby Saffron Walden we opted for this pub based on online reviews. We weren't disappointed. The friendly and efficient team at The Crown provided us with a mountain of wholesome, tasty, and delicious food. It was so good that wen considering a venie for our second night we decided to return and, within 10 minutes of arrival we were shaken by the mighty sound of the boom, much lke someone had dropped a piano upstairs!
