We went to The Crown hoping for a classic Sunday lunch, but what we got felt more like a tragic comedy in three acts. Act One: My wife’s cottage pie – a dish that clearly had ambitions but fell spectacularly short. It started with mince that had more grease than a mechanic’s overalls. The poor thing was practically swimming in fat, bobbing up to the surface of the mash like a tiny, unfortunate shipwreck. And as for the cheese? Rather than a nice golden topping, it was an apathetic layer that looked like it lost the will to melt. Seriously, it was like the cheese took one look at the mince and decided, “Nah, I’m done.” Act Two: The carrots. Not only were they so soft they practically disintegrated on sight, but they hadn’t been topped or tailed. Imagine going through life only to end up on a plate without anyone even bothering to snip off your ends. The poor carrots deserved better. Act Three was my fish and chips – the only saving grace. The batter was crispy, and the chips were alright. But compared to the epic drama of the cottage pie, it felt like a very quiet end to the meal. The nice lady asked us about our meal half way through, and we told her about the carrots. She didnt really say anything nor take ownership, so thought it wasn’t even worth mentioning the greasy Cottage Pie The Crown has potential, but they need to get their act together. Otherwise, that cottage pie will haunt my dreams forever.

Saturday night and they didn’t have any pies, pizzas, sausages or steak. No explanation and only told when trying to order. We had the crispy chilli beef as a starter, which was just strips of plain beef with some raw chopped chilli on salad leaves. Not at all how it was described. Main was pork belly which was just a thick layer of fat, rubbery rind and a thin layer of meat. Not the slow cooked, melt in the moth it should have been. Totally tasteless. Others around us had meals that were cold, items missing and not even the right glasses to serve drinks in. Real shame because it has great potential. Definitely one to avoid unless they get their act together.

A nice friendly welcome and a nice clean restaurant. However, the food was not of the same standard - both my wife and I agreed it was the worst food either of us have ever eaten whilst dining out. I ordered steak pie, chips and peas. The pie pastry was hard (I gave up trying to cut it), the steak of minimal quantity and the chips lukewarm. My wife ordered belly pork, potato and carrots. The pork was dry, the potatoes tasteless and the meal as a whole lukewarm. The single carrot left something to be desired. My daughters beef burger was dry and over-cooked. There really was too much wrong to even start to complain - so I paid and left and put it down to experience. We will not be returning. I really would recommend eating elsewhere. I've given one star only because I can't give zero. Disappointing and a complete waste of money.

My liver and bacon was meant to have had creamy garlic mash potatoes. I couldn't detect any garlic at all and the potatoes had the consistency of bought in frozen mash potatoes. The dish was meant to have buttered greens, instead my plate was piled high with tasteless cabbage which I initially mistook for onions. Onion gravy was unimpressive. My partners meal of crispy chilli beef was meant to have been marinated strips of beef. Well she was served with cubs of beef with no flavour at all. Another dish of garlic mushrooms were devoid of garlic. We mentioned our concerns when asked about the meal at the end and this was met with apathy. Very disappointing will not be returning.

We’re currently on holiday and staying about half an hours walk from the Crown. We’ve been a few times now and spent some sunny late afternoons in the beautiful beer garden. The staff have been lovely, and very attentive to us and our two dogs (who were made to feel very welcome). The food is great pub food, all home made and delicious. You’d have to be extremely fussy to find fault with it. We visited during Covid restrictions, and all appropriate procedures and measures were in place and adhered to. If we return to this part of the country then we’ll definitely return. If you’re in the area then I highly recommend a visit.

A local Pub in every respect. The barmaid was friendly, but poured my lemonade from a 2lr bottle which is never a good start. The menu was very limited and we were told 2 of the main dishes were not available which then really restricted our options. I went for bangers and mash. It arrived pipping hot, was home cooked but I found gristle in the sausages. Not the best meal we had on holiday, such a shame.

There are two bedrooms our twin was very comfortable with walk in shower room very clean. The accommodation features an exclusive guest lounge with tv and more tea making facilities. First visit back in The Crown for over 40yrs, it has now expanded to be much bigger inside and has a lovely beer garden out back. Our lady server was friendly and got us sorted straightaway. The menu has the usual pub classics and there are a few specials. I went for fish pie. It arrived piping hot and with a plethora of veg. totally homemade, it had loads of fish and a creamy cheese sauce. It could have done with a few minutes more under the grill to brown it. Prices are excellent for the quality of food served, I won't leave it another 40yrs til I visit again.

Sunday roast - served until 4pm - was unexpectedly delightful. How many pubs offer a choice of beef, pork, lamb or, mon dieu, two partridge breasts wrapped in bacon, for a mere £9.95? Lamb which husband Peter ordered had a nicely garlicky flavour and, when asked for redcurrant jelly, they brought some over! In the past I've taken my own to pubs, knowing they would have none. The vegetables were just super, neither boringly al dente nor overdone, and included runner beans, which is quite unusual. The honey-glazed roast parsnips were perfect. Yes, you really could taste the honey. Roast potatoes were good too, and the Yorkshire puds seemed to have been made from scratch as they had depth, unlike the usual vapid airbag offerings. We could not criticise the Sunday roast, nor the drinks, but the reason this falls short of excellent is the abiding need to sort out the soft furnishings. All a bit tired now. Mind you, the lavatories are pristine. Any readers of mine know it is a particular topic. We've been to The Crown just for drinkies from time to time, and once had bar snacks which included deep-fried insects, a delicacy in southern Africa. This is the gift of Eunice Wortley, who has brought Cote d'Ivoire to Smallburgh. Love talking with her in my rather bad French. Clever girl, and long may she reign. Suspect she does some cooking too!

We were visiting East Ruston old vicarage garden and stopped here for Sunday Lunch beforehand.I had chosen this pub because of it's reviews on tripadvisor.I am not sure what went wrong with the food but it was very poor. It tasted as if it had been reheated from at least two days before. The meat was tough, the vegetables were cold, the Yorkshire pudding could not have been worse and was mostly inedible. All the staff were very nice, but I got the impression that they were leaderless. I can only think that the owners were away, as our meal did not live up to most of the previous reviews.Such a shame because the garden at East Ruston was a fantastic experience and we will be going again with friends later on in the year.

We live around 4 miles from The Crown Inn. It isn't our most local pub but it's become a favourite. We're not alone in this as we've met other Norfolk residents, from villages further afield, who choose it over their own local pubs for similar reasons. Eunice, the landlady, is warm, welcoming and a fab cook. The service behind the bar is always very friendly and accommodating; other folk actually talk to you and the beer and food are tasty. Every time we've visited, we've been drawn into conversation which has created a tangible community feeling. There's a warmth to the place and not only from the roaring log fire. As mentioned, parts of the pub need refreshing, decor-wise, but that will happen, in time. To be fair, though, it's the essence of warmth, friendliness and good home-cooked food that draws people there and keeps them coming back.

Slightly set back from the road I drove past this one before I realised it was there. But it looked ok, if the thatch seemed a bit tatty. Through the door there is plenty of character. Low beams, old fireplaces and a bar that looked like Nelson could have leaned on it. We wanted to eat so we were ushered through to the restaurant area (Itself over 200 years old). The beers were the usual uninspiring offerings from Adnams, Woodfordes and the obligatory GK IPA. However what we had was in very good condition. The menu is not large but we had no difficulty in choosing. The food was of a good standard especially considering the price. So we were quite satisfied. The service was excellent. This was one to remember to call back to.Looking it up afterwards it seems their website could do with refreshing

Couldn't have the meals we wanted because they'd " run out of mashed potatoe".. Small portions, poor quality, watery custard... Everything microwaved.. Complained and nobody actually gave a Sh@t.. Your money would be better spent visiting the Goat Inn at Skeyton!!!

We had been here under previous owners but the new ones are making a huge difference, the restaurant has been beautifully decorated, so nice to see fresh flowers on the tables, it is now light and bright, the food is good too,the landlady is very friendly and gives you a nice welcome, and there are further improvements in the pipeline. Give it a go you will not be disappointed

This is a wonderful old pub run by very friendly family who are warm and very welcoming. The garden is charming also. Well worth a visit.

This place is under new ownership and we were thrilled because it meant we could visit there as a whole family. We really enjoyed the company of our hosts.

... and we tried a Sunday lunch there on their first day. And it was absolutely wonderful. The two courses we had were superb as was the ale (TT Landlord) and wine that we sampled. The service and welcome we received made us feel like we'll certainly be back. Thoroughly recommended. Also overhearing what plans the new owners have for the place I think this is definitely a destination to keep your eye on.

We were exploring the area and came across this lovely pub. The landlady was very friendly and recommended the burgers which are made by the local butcher. They didn't disappoint. We would definitely go back and try something on the fish menu.

...and the place - despite being on one of the main roads to the North Norfolk coast, was closed?!Had heard good reports about the well kept ales and also the food, but if they insist on taking one of the busiest days of the year off, I shan't be going back any time soon.Plus the three of us had walked from Worstead station, the best part of three miles to visit them. <grr>

Dropped in for Saturday lunch as we're exploring the area. Really friendly landlord & landlady, it felt like country pubs used to feel and equally welcoming for food or a drink. Although there was a nice selection of fish on the menu, we went for the home-made burgers. Delicious with their own salsa too. We'll be heading back.

We stopped here for Sunday lunch on the walk from Sheringham back to Cromer after Sunday morning church at Life Church in Sheringham. Conveniently situated just a few minutes from the coast path. Although we had not booked they were able to accommodate us in the garden. Food was excellent and seemed good value.

The food was very good well cooked and presented, we had to wait for a while before our order was placed, however it's a busy local pub which caters for holiday makers also so this could have been the reason for the wait. Cheerful and pleasant staff, I would certainly eat there again.

WOW …What a find … great food choices . But just needed a coffee and coffee cake before going to the beach. Lovely friendly staff …Fantastic to know they have staff with learning difficulties who were so polite friendly and even gave my dog a treat . It will be my regular from now on . Many thanks

Been here before as we are fairly local and it was good. But this time terrible and very expensive we had roast pork with apple sauce, stuffing and crackling. Meat was mostly really Fatty and baguette was filled mostly with stuffing best bit was the crackling. At £8 each I expect far better just ripping off the holiday makers. Don’t think we will be going again. It was barely warm so back to the pie man at sheringham for us.
