The Crown Inn in Barnsley

We decided to go to Elsecar heritage centre on Sunday for a walk and a wander. It was crazy busy, and thought we would walk around the village. We dropped in on The Crown Inn, and was pleased to see such a nice cozy local pub still operating and serving good food. Next time we will pop in for a bite to eat. Well stocked beers and 3 pumps dedicated to guest beers. V.happy. Service was lovely and healthy banter and discussions with the locals. Keep up the great work.

I had a lamb shank it was out of this world to die for my lad had lasagne beautiful with sweet potato fries nice to see the crown back doing food nice atmosphere great staff lovely people dogs welcome in tap room but not in dinning area which is good GREAT

Brilliant local pub with three cracking beers on hand pump. Rumours abound that it could go up to six. Great local banter. Plenty of seats and large beer garden. Good quiz on a Thursday.

This is a nice cosy pub It's was curry night and yes the home made curry was fantastic Excellent choice of alcoholic drinks on the bar Friendly and welcoming staff Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo

Lets start on a positive, the staff are friendly. The menu is basic, with a few daily specials listed on the wall. We were told that all the food was made from scratch and that some meals take time to prepare. What you see on the menu is not what we received, the garlic mushrooms on ciabatta bread was served with toasted bread. The nachos are served with three dips, the salsa is a sauce with no particular taste or texture , the nachos were very poor, small, thin with little to no taste. My wife ordered the rump steak, medium rare, it came well done, it was no more than 10mm thick and very chewy. It came with chips (these looked and tasted good I was told) the garden peas were dry and wrinkled. The tomato ketchup was the one made with lots of vinegar. there was a good size mushroom, unfortunately no one wanted to eat it as it was saturated in oil. My son had the lasagne, the dish was a good size with what looked like a good cheese topping, unfortunately there was little sign of any meat, the filling was mush. part way through he pulled our a piece of plastic food tray (it looked like the lip of a disposable microwave food tray) he presented the plastic fragment to an member of the bar staff they apologised and after consulting the manager, knocked it of the bill, he did not finish the meal. It very much looked and tasted like a cheap ping meal. Before ordering my meal from the daily specials "sticky chilly chicken" with red onion and peppers. I asked at the bar if it was spicy. she said "it does have a bit of a kick" sounded great. It arrived over one hour later (the pub was far from being busy) the meal was served in a dish, approximately 75% of the dish was boiled rice and at the side was a red watery sauce it looked and tasted like the sauce the you get with chicken balls from a supermarket that I throw it away as it spoils the chicken, it came with diced white onions (no red onion or any peppers) there was between 6 and 8 pieces of chicken slightly bigger than an oxo cube, regular in size. There was nothing sticky or that tasted like chilly and it did not have any red onions, peppers or a spicy kick. I wish that I had taken photos. We have been eating at the Crown since 1977, its always had a very good reputation for good food and in all this time I have never been disappointed. For me that reputation has been shattered.

Just got home after my first visit with my wife, had a wonderful experience, food was superb, the wings, lasagne, mixed grill all brilliant with excellent, helpful service in a relaxed atmosphere, plus cracking value for money. We will definitely return.

Lovely cooked, tasty meals at very good value. Gammon cooked very well with home made chips and lots of accompaniments. Excellent. My wife's burger was also excellent. We will visit again. All washed down with a great cask ale.

Good food at the crown elsecar , starter’s garlic mushrooms delicious lasagna and salmon for mains and real chips , delicious food good service reasonably priced , definitely visiting again

Found this place by accident. Little gem! Staff lovely and friendly, nothing is too much trouble. 3 of us had the Sunday roast, absolutely gorgeous with the best gravy in the world, made with meat juices. Will definitely go again.

I came here with my mate who is a local. The mixed grill was awesome annd had good quality meat and sausages. and Rebecca who served us was the right mix of attentive and efficient.

What a great traditional pub this is! Cask ales served to perfection and ample room for dining and casual drinks alike. You can choose from a traditional pub bar side room, or the more modern dining area. We had the homemade pies, which were delicious - clean plates all round! Would highly recommend! Fairly priced too and very friendly, welcoming staff.

Lovely little pub well run friendly staff

Food was excellent, hot, tasty. Had the beef Sunday roast, which was the best I've tasted in a long time in a pub.

We have previously come here for a drink as we live so close but never had food. Took our parents to The Crown for dinner last night- staff are really welcoming and the food was great. We will definitely come again.

Visited the place as a group of 7 last Sunday at 1pm. It wasn't busy and we managed to get a table with no booking. We were told we can't have our roasts served together as we paid separately. I was the first to receive my order and asked to have my Yorkshire pudding replaced immediately as it was burnt and dry, they discarded entire plate and came back with a pudding just a bit less burnt than the previous one and forgot to put mash on the plate. Everyone from my party agreed that was the worst pudding they ever ate - dry and burnt. It's a shame especially as we had guests from abroad and it might be the only roast they will ever eat. Meats were nice and juicy, probably because they just started serving. All trimmings were definetly not made to order as we received food within 5 minutes of ordering. Worst Sunday roast of my life and wouldn't recommend it. Best part of the meal was a pint of Guiness. Ironically, we were asked to leave a review as it's under new management - so there you go.

What can I say the boar scotch egg for starters was amazing. A big well done to the chef. 👏 Jack the bartender and waiter was spot on, nothing was too much trouble. 👌 A very warm and welcoming place. Would definitely visit again. 👍

Had the turkey dinner, the Yorkshire pudding was lovely really enjoyed that, it was well presented the roast potatoes weren’t nice tasted deep fried. The lasagne needed more pasta layers as only one layer of pasta but was told tasted nice. Apple crumble was a let down more like a bowl of stewed apples with a dusting of crumble but again tasted good so mixed bag really. And the pub was so cold not sure if they had a problem with the heating but it was very cold everyone was eating with coats on. Staff were nice and friendly and prices not too bad. Would we go back yes probably

We visited The Crown on 23rd November to celebrate my daughter’s graduation and family birthdays. We had a wonderful evening, the atmosphere was great the food was fantastic and the service was second to none. From booking to leaving on the night the staff were really friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We wish the new tenants the best of luck, but I’m sure they won’t need it if our experience was anything to go by x

Lovely staff and lovely food. We go to a lot of pubs and we thought we’d call in to see what it’s like. We got a warm welcome from the staff and seated and served quickly. Service was good and the food was lovely and homemade, they catered to my needs of being a picky eater and nothing was too much trouble for them! Definitely be coming back and eating here again. They’re also dog friendly which helps as our dog can come with us 🐾 thank you! x

What a lovely little gem of a place. Just under new management. Very friendly staff. The food is excellent. We will definitely be calling regularly in the future. For locals, the chips are as good as Saville's 🙂

Couldn't knock the food at all, delicious. Good selection for vegetarians and plenty to choose from all round. Very friendly staff and went out of their way to make you feel welcome. Definitely recommend and 100% will come back

First visit and it was superb from the greeting to the farewell. It’s not often you get great value on price and experience so well done! And learning that the managers have only been here for a week it will only improve I’m sure!

The Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie was amazing! Gravy served in its own pot, so the option of a light drizzle or swimming was a nice touch. Really nice traditional pub with a great menu

Popped in for lunch today. Vic looked after us really well, had the buttermilk chicken burger with chilli, it was beautifully cooked by head chef Derek and the homemade chips were amazing, good portion sizes, will definitely be returning 😋

Visited this pub after seeing Wentworth Woodhouse. Great service and the food was superb. It was off the budget menu but still tasted great . Friendly and attentive barmaid. I've marked the atmosphere 4stars because we were the only one in on a late afternoon

My first trip to The Crown Inn, recommended by a friend. I had steak pie, chips and mushy peas. The chips were the "proper" ones your nan used to cook in the chip pan, amazing! The pie was full of meat and a fully crusted pie, none of this stew with a lid nonsense . Absolutely loved it, I will be returning. And (on Friday) there's a bit of a disco / music which was fantastic.

Lived in Hoyland almost four years now and this is the first time I’ve been. We had a lovely lunch, the lady working the bar was so nice, she recommended the crown fest which sounds so good! The price was really affordable too! Will definitely be back - the beer garden looks brill!

Lovely pub, friendly staff, excellent food, had to wait a hot sec for our food, but they were cooking for our huge party of 20+ people so is totally understandable & we then ordered a lot of add ons & extra sides after that which were served to us almost immediately, as well as serving & cooking for any other customers at the time! Went on an extremely hot day & inside the the pub was still nice & cool, menu also quite large & has loads of options, including Italian options which were delicious & reasonably priced!

Dreadful risotto, like porridge and had to pay for it. Such a shame when all their other meals are great.

We came for lunch and we’re given the main menu plus a snack one so lots of choice. The staff were friendly and welcoming as usual and we were served very quickly. The food was hot, well cooked and very tasty as well as being very good value. We are very lucky to have this pub on out doorstep.

Nice pub with lots of space indoors and out... hopefully, the outside area will be summer ready and smartened up soon.

Arrived at 17 55, had a table booked for 18.00, ordered food at 18.10, still waiting for food to arrive at 19.00, asked what the delay was, lame excuse about waiting for my pork chop to cook (it dont take 1 hour to cook a pork chop), eventually the food arrived, WOW what a complete waste of time that had been, the home cooked chips were disgusting, they tasted like they had been cooked for an hour and left in old cooking fat and then warmed back-up, the onion rings were full of fat, I picked one up and fat run through my fingers, started on the pork chop this was rock hard and dry as a bone, the other meal we ordered was a burger with chilli on, this wasn't much better than the sorry state of a plate of food I had been served, the best thing about all the food that was served were the tomatoes, sure to say that we wont be going back here again. I'm so disappointed!!!!!!!!!

We are regulars at the Crown and the staff are absolutely lovely. We recently went for lunch and the food was amazing!!!!! It was so nice we booked a table of 10 for Sunday lunch and honestly the food was absolutely lovely....... I called in advance because some of my awkward children won't eat Sunday lunch and they accommodated us....... Lovely food and lovely staff and owners ❤️

Just had a lovely Sunday lunch here at The Crown and can really recommend it. The pub has recently started serving food again and we’re so happy to have such a great place as our local. The service is always friendly and welcoming, the drinks selection is fab and we always enjoy our visit. Kyle and Nigel are great hosts and we’re looking forward to coming again soon.

Well presented pub. Fresh & modern interior, seating in a spacious conservatory area (plenty of seating throughout), large outdoor area with accommodated shelter for rainy days (nicely lit). The Crown now do cocktails which I highly recommend (have 2 for X amount offers). Various themed nights on an evening too. - Friendly staff and reasonably priced. All round nice place to be!

Friendly staff and well run pub. Food available and room for hire. Nice beer garden ,gazebo and out door furniture. Nothing seems too much trouble for the hosts. Prices are very reasonable too.
