A valentine meal, waited 35 minutes for a starter, and then an hour for our mains to arrive. And we can't say the wait was worth it. The food was shocking, tough Ribeye steak. Frozen chips, lacking any colour , for the cost of the meal, you would have expected fresh homemade chips. Mushrooms dripping in fat. 🤢 The poor very young waitress taking flack from several diners, having no support from the owners or managers. They should award her for keeping professional throughout her regular apologies. On paying the bill the manager/owner didn't seem to care that the food was bad. All he seemed to care about was punching in the amount of the bill into his till, and us pinging our card. We will not be returning or recommending to friends

We had a lovely meal here, the staff were friendly and the setting very comfortable. The carvery is plentiful and tasteful, great pork crackling, hot gravy (would suggest this is served with a ladle with a lip or in a jug, minor point as I flooded my plate accidentally and slightly scalded my thumb) excellent all in all, thank you.

As always, a delicious Sunday lunch yesterday. The roaring fire in this traditional country inn adds to the whole experience. Excellent ale, fine wine. Couldn't get any better on a cold January Sunday. We have eaten here many times before including Boxing Days and the fabulous buffet carvery. Highly recommended.

This review is for the restaurant, not the hotel. Mains and starters were mostly good but the terrine was served with huge chunks of bread which made it a bit hard to stuff a bit of terrine on the bread; my wife found her soup ordinary. Really nice place, wonderful ambiance, a perfect pub in a charming location.

Coupled with our stay here and separate review, we dined here following Christmas shopping in nearby Peterborough. The restaurant was fully booked so we ate in the charming snug tucked up near the Christmas tree. Service was prompt, manifold and courteous. Our differently cooked steaks were misidentified and we realised too late to swap. Both were cooked to each other's perfection Chunky chips were double fried and scrum my. Our starter was a whole boule of organic bread fresh from the oven. Tasty and served with dip and herb butter. Deserts were great, although some people may criticise the relatively low number of choices. Please remember this is a village inn and not a city centre restaurant. The cost was reflective of the quality and happily paid. We'll book again without a shadow of hesitation.

We arrived at around 2 o'clock for lunch and opted for the buffet meal. We were warned that as we were late some dishes would not be available. Nevertheless we had a look and went ahead to eat. We were not disappointed, there was still an excellent selection of food including a whole crab. Very good food and good value for money.

Despite the rather slow service, we enjoyed our first visit to this pub. The superb floral baskets and tubs outside were a blaze of colour and most welcoming. The menu provided a good choice of dishes, and we noted the availability of a good value buffet carvery at lunchtimes...which we hope to sample at a future date...but we went for an evening meal. Having placed our order there was a considerable delay before being served and when I asked the barmaid how much longer we might have to wait, her manner became noticeably frosty. However the waiting staff were extremely courteous. Our friends chose beef stroganoff and opted for 'seasonal potatoes' to accompany rather than rice. Rather disappointingly, this turned out to be mashed potatoes rather than the 'new' potatoes they'd envisaged......we should have asked! But the stroganoff itself was creamy and delicious. My husband and I also enjoyed our gammon steaks with the usual accompaniments..a generous plateful of food. All in all a good value pub meal, and, as our daughter has recently moved to the area, we shall certainly return when visiting the family.

All the food was really good. the ham in particular was excellent quality, as was the bread for the sandwich. The garden is really nicely cared for, large but it feels like someone's garden rather than an impersonal pub garden.I am surprised by the recent negative reviews as we really thought the food was good and ye service was fine too.

We took friends for a pre-Christmas lunch, pre-booked. The place was pretty full and there didn't seem to be many staff available. Our first course (buffet style) was very nice although there was very little choice for our veggie friends. Then 2 of us ordered fruit crumble which we were told had run out. So we settled for apple pie and custard. When it arrived it appeared that one very small, single portion had been divided into two, placed in 2 bowls and then smothered in custard. My portion of pie was slightly more than 2 mouthsful in total and I just detected apple, very faintly. There wasn't even one piece of apple evident. My friend did slightly better but we were both far from happy.I complained to one waitress who appeared very disinterested and said she would pass the message to the kitchen but no-one took the trouble to come and apologise. When it came to the time to pay I again complained to the second waitress who just said "Oh, sorry about that" I asked her to let the kitchen know and she just said she would and there was no further interest, let alone a reduction in the bill. As a local who visits from time to time I do expect a better attitude towards complaints: the two girls couldn't have shown less interest!

We dropped in here on Boxing Day on our way to Hunstanton. They were offering a carvery and a pud for £15. the choice was somewhat limited, but it was decent enough quality. The beef was better that the pork but there was also some pies and mixed grill on offer. The veg was cauli,. carrots and sprouts with three types of potato, the gravy was nice. There were three puds - Xmas pud, apple crumble or chocolate sponge - or cheese. The apple crumble was microwaved, which meant the crumble was soggy. This is an old fashioned pub that one rarely finds these days, and the Boxing Day atmosphere was jolly. Probably a nice place for a summer drink as the garden looked nice

Simply right! Lovely village setting, well planned, well staffed and no compromise here to the celebration of very good traditional English pub food and atmosphere. The Crown Inn at Gayton proves that you can mix locals, passing tourism and pub food lovers and stay in business! The ales were just right, the service cordial, friendly but swift, and the food..... simply the best roast carvery I have had for many years. The meats were exceptional, flavour, texture and cooking were, to my taste, spot on. At a price for the large plate option of £8.50, we were more than happy and the range of veg on offer was almost too much for the plate. The freshly made dark gravy, apple, cranberry and horse radish sauces were the finishing touch! This is a 'dog-friendly' environment with public bar and garden available to well behaved dogs (respectful owners!). Accommodation is offered at a modest price and we will try it and write a review if it proves to be as good as the pub. Turned up without a booking at 8.30pm on a Bank Holiday Monday, lovely welcome and still willing to serve us , ate in the bar area, nice atmosphere and food was worth the wait. Had the largest gammon i have ever had, cooked to perfection with mushrooms, onion rings, chips and a separate large bowl of salad, so big i couldn't finish it, which is unusual for me to let a meal beat me :-)...Partner had the steak pie, huge pieces, no grisle at all...can't fault it. There is a wonderful lunch salad buffet in the summer but l don't remember the day. There is good car parking and a lovely garden at the back and side to eat al fresco during summer. It overlooks the pretty church. One tip; booking essential for Sunday lunch and during other peak times. A lovely real fire awaits you during the winter and there are lovely little nooks and crannys to sit in.

We went here today for a carvery on my birthday with the family (6 adults + 1toddler). The food was good traditional sunday lunch. The food was hot and the service was good. My only small criticism is that there was not enough space we felt somewhat cramped at our table. Also, as far as I could see, there were no starters available for the carvery. Food choice was fairly limited. Food was presented well but lacked proper seasoning and one dish in particular was very rich. The evening was spoiled by a lot of flies in the restaurant, when mentioning this, I was told it was the season for flies. I could not detect any fly deterrants, perhaps this is something that can be looked into by the owners.

We went to this popular village pub/restaurant for a meal with friends. The bar staff were friendly and helpful and the bar area was busy so we took our seats at the table. Unfortunately this was tucked away - next to the toilets - and cramped for 8 people. There is a carvery for evening meal and one person had this - it was just OK and the veg were sad and the Yorkshire puds soggy. The starter of halloumi and bacon was uninspiring - 2 slices of each on a bed of leaves and the seafood platter was mainly just batter! Friends had rice pudding for dessert which was presented as in my old school dinners! The meals were overpriced and poorly presented. Great if you want a lot of chips and fillers. We did not expect a goumet experience but other pub restaurants are able to provide a much better ambiance and dining experience for less. As this was for a friend's birthday meal it was additionally disappointing. Wouldn't choose to go back.
