You hear that crunchy layer? 😋 🐟 FRIAR TUCK’S OF YAXLEY 📍 🇬🇧 A few weeks back, I stumbled across a new Fish n Chips spot! I am on a quest to find the best tastiest Fish & Chips combo in the UK. 🇬🇧 I am a big fan of fried fish in general but UKs fish and chips is my new obsession. 🤩 Each month I select a fish n chips spot to review its service, ambiance and most importantly its taste of its food. FRIAR TUCK’S OF YAXLEY have been on my radar for quite some time now. I finally went there and had to see what they working with. The location was convenient. I like the set up of the store, a very well put together to-go spot. The workers at the cash register were sweet. When I asked the difference between the two types of fish, the cook at the counter seemed annoyed that I asked that question. 😅😅 They also didn’t have had their large size fish option at the moment, which was a bummer. 😕Nevertheless, I was still excited to try their fish and chips. So got a Medium size Cod. They fried the fish right in front of me which was superb 🤩 The pricing wasn’t that bad as well. Something I did appreciate was that they wrap their food in paper which made it feel more authentic. Their medium size fish was HUGE, as well as the small chips order. 🫨It smells Devine! Once I got my food, I was ready to eat it right and then! As I was leaving, there was this MOST BREATHTAKING PICTURE PERFECT RAINBOW I’ve ever seen 🌈 I mean, it was just out of this world! That’s when I knew this fish and chips was going to be amazing! It was indeed amazing! It was well seasoned with salt and vinegar with my chips as well. It has the perfect crisp to it. The fish tasted fresh and great quality. Would love to visit again! If ever in this area, it’s a MUST! Two lady’s frying were really rude to me

This is normally my favourite fish and chip shop this side of Peterborough, but not tonight. I ordered the large cod, cheesy chips (by mistake I’ll admit) and a curry sauce. It’s a good 8 minute drive from my house but everything looked cooked for a piping hot meal as they were literally bagging it as an arrived, so straight in and out with my order. Got home and wow! The curry sauce was barely warm, the large cod was two smaller pieces, one as greasy as they come and the other one as dry as Gandhi’s flipflop. But the real disappointment was the chips. Now as I said, ordered by mistake, cold, undercooked and so unappealing that I’ll let the photo do the talking. Will ai go back? Yes, this is the first time this has happened so I’m not looking elsewhere just yet.

I've only ordered from here twice but both times outstanding: I am gluten free and their gluten free battered haddock is delicious. Large fish is wider than my dinner plate and chip portions are generous. Beautifully golden cooked and no excess grease. The entrance and serving area is hygienic.

Guy is a liar never called me and speaking in CAPITALS is childish, if I spoke to you on the phone you then you lied you wasn’t the proprietor. Hid and said the owner would call me back, STOP being a keyboard warrior? Meet me you owe me £26 🙏 I ordered on your website not via the foodhub app, so this is your problem as a business you are responsible for your website and services. Whatever the platform you use, it’s your reputation stop passing the buck.

Ordered Fish and chips and sausages and chips for the family. The fish was horrible obviously not fresh and the batter stuck to the paper so literally no batter left on the fish. Over £50 spent and more than disappointed. I would not recommend do not use this takeaway

Tried to Order on their website for collection, when I went to pay I received a page saying network issue - retry. So I did couple of times but got the same page. Basically got charged without knowing the order had been placed and the restaurant called me up hour later saying to pick up the order. Problem was we had already eaten by then, I was told to ring foodhub and they should be able to process a refund. Foodhub said they would need to speak to the takeaway. The owner of the chip shop didn't bother to call me even though I was told twice that he would. Kept my money and offered no apology or compensation. In your negative reviews you have constantly asked people to ring the restaurant to resolve issues, ehmmmm that really worked for me - didnt it? Won't be spending my money here again.

Picked up cod and chips. Very friendly staff. Extremely clean premises Very pleasant fish. Chips - fairly standard fish and chip shop chips - cooked earlier and been hanging around in the pan. Not a criticism just a reality of takeaway food. Be happy to return next time I'm thinking of having a takeaway.

Usually I would give them a 5star rating but tonight it was not fit for my dog to eat the pie top was so hard think had been left under the heater miles to long and the chips were all black like bruised when lifted on the farm or left out of water after peeling plus only 20 chips inside the tray we travel from Conington to Yaxley just to come home get a pie and rice out of freezer the fishcakes were the only thing that was eaten totally a waste of money sorry, but standards have dropped since last there three young lads serving bring back the staff that was in their

Went in on Tuesday on the hope of Gluten free fish and chips I couldn’t see on the website what days they cooked gluten free It’s Tuesday and Saturday all day The mistake I made was to order a large gluten free fish They serve whale size fish!!!! Will order a smaller size next time It was delicious Visited today Tuesday 27th Feb2024 only to find Gluten free is no longer available on a Tuesday apparently at the moment it’s still available on a Saturday But as I travel quite a few miles to visit this chip shop I won’t bother visiting again Couldn’t see anything on the website the lady in the shop said it was on Facebook that they won’t be cooking it on a Tuesday I couldn’t find their Facebook page and it’s not worth travelling there in case they stop selling it on a Saturday too 🙁

Ordered from here this evening and the food was nice. However The (what I can only presume) owners attitude and manner towards me on the phone was completely disgusting and customer service was non existent. I made a simple mistake and thought I had selected delivery but actually it’s only pick up. Not a problem as I’m only 3 miles down the road, so it’s no issue for me to come and collect. I spent over £75 and you shouted at me that my food has been sat on the side for 45 mins, you also shouted that 33 other people didn’t have an issue with their orders that they needed to collect this evening! Had I realise the mistake that I had made, do you think it would have been sat on the side for 45 minutes, (incidentally I wonder why you waited 45 mins to call me?) Either way it doesn’t matter now. I asked why you were shouting at me and you said because you have a busy shop. Your vile tone requires improvement and maybe a customer service course wouldn’t go a miss. Also, you’d do well to remember who you are talking to, after all we are the ones paying your wages. ‘The customer is always right’ however in this case, I was at fault, I admitted my fault and you were completely arrogant, rude and disrespectful. As I work in a customer facing industry too I would never speak to a customer the way you did tonight to me. You were on speaker phone too and everyone in the room were as shocked as I was. You should be ashamed In response to your again arrogant reply (who do you actually think you are) There was no abuse from me? I’m unsure why you are trying to imply that, and I wasn’t insistent that you deliver to me either?! I have clearly admitted fault. I have stuck to the facts. Maybe you should too, instead of trying to make me look bad to make yourself look better? Again, you should be ashamed

Excellent fish and chips. Not sure why there are negative reviews in the past. Quality, taste, and portion size were perfect. Looks like a well-run family business.

Great fish and chips and beautifully cooked but compared to every other fish and chips place the portions of chips were tiny. Also paid for a large and a regular code, and they were the same size.

Food good value. The staff pleasant and helpful. Worth a visit. Best in Yaxley

7.25pm I ordered my food and stood waiting... another couple came in and ordered at the counter they got served before me! Each time a customer came down the drive the woman frying looked up and commented by tutting " oh not another" if you do not wish to serve after a certain time do not take peoples orders! She continied tk cook smacking her chewing gum around her mouth, then proceeded to raise her voice and was rude to a customer returning his chips that were below standard. The customer remained calm and im sure he wont return neither will i. I was truly embarrased.

I ordered, fish and chips and a pie. When I got home, the tray of chips was very small and just dried up scraps. They were so bad I had to return them. The young man serving was nice enough and gave me some fresh chips which did look better than previously. As I was about to walk out, the other lady working there decided to pick a fight with me. She started to shout and argue with me. She said the chips before were fine and that I had been over an hour which was a total lie as I have the receipt. She was very rude and impolite and the fact that she chose to shout and argue with me over a tray of chips, beggars belief! No idea or clue of customer service or conflict resolution. When I eventually ate, the fish was full of bones and the dog wouldn't even eat it. Save your money and your stomach and eat elsewhere. Looking at the reviews on Google, Friar Tucks Yaxley has an extremely low score. It's rare to see a place with this low score on Google but after eating there, it's not hard to see why.

The worst fish and chips I've ever eaten and the staff have an attitude and are argumentative. The chip portion was very small and full of dried up scraps. The staff argued and shouted at me over a tray of chips! Unbelievable. When I ate the fish it was greasy and full of bones. Even my dog refused to eat it. ! Avoid this place like the plague and the staff need to learn some customer service and manners.

I ordered fish and chips on Friday night, and was very impressed with the quality of the food, and the value for money. The staff in the shop were too very professional and friendly. I certainly will be returning.

I'm wondering if they left with any cooking oil after they prepared my order...1 star is just too much Chicken was extremely overcooked and onion rings went straight in the bin...just impossible to be eaten...that much oil I definitely don't recommend!

Best chippy in yaxley (family preference) I moved her around a year ago to live with my partners family and this is their go to chippy and I stand by it I've tried they standard choppy meals like, fish and sausage and even their burgers and kebabs. 10/10

This place was recommended to me for a takeout fish n chips. I think that it was alright, the food tasted fresh but was a bit bland and chips looked pale. Didn’t think it was too badly priced - £18 for two medium cod, one large chips and two bread rolls. Service wise, we weren’t greeted as we came in and it was a bit awkward but I think that the girls are just young and maybe shy. When taking the order they were friendly. Time wise they were quick enough so we didn’t wait too long. Might visit again but I’m still on the search for the best takeaway fish n chips.

Very Poor Food & Awful Customer Service . Just how hard is it to cook a piece of fish in batter and a portion of chips come to this place and you will find out top that off with staff that behave like they have been trained at the Moscow State School Of Charm and you have found the perfect place to buy £30 of food from fryer to bin my advice is drive straight past the place and go home and cook something yourself !

Good to see Tash serving, everything was perfect as usual. Very polite young people taking the orders beautiful golden batter on perfectly cooked fish. Really look forward to our chippy night. Used the Whittlesey shop for many years when worked at the brickyards. Owners should be pleased.

Love this place.... Happily drive for 20 minutes past many other chip shops to get here. Freshly cooked, chips always done well, not greasy batter. Great value for money on the Senior portions.

Service was relatively quick. Just moved to Hampton Water and thought I would try the local chippy. I was seriously disappointed with the portion size. That is a large on the left and a medium on the right, as you can see, they resemble a small and even smaller. Unfortunately, first impressions count, and this was a very poor one, I will definitely not be returning. Edit: Reply to your response. No, I did not phone. You're more than welcome to check it was between 6:00 and 6:30, I was wearing a bright Orange coat, so it's pretty obvious and was about £14 ish. Moved from London, the portion sizes were 4 times as big for the same price, and they tasted great as well. Thanks for the quick response.

Oversalted chips a literal bottle must of been put on them and burnt batter. First time using as well in no rush to go back

Fish and chips were disgusting. Never again. I would rather travel. Such a shame there's not a good local chippy.

We usually enjoy our fish and chips from here very much and my pie and chips last week was lovely. However it was disappointing this evening, the batter over cooked and had a slight bitter burnt taste and the fish was dry with hardly any flavour. We also had a fish cake which looked reasonable from the outside but the inside was a very unappetising grey/brown colour and a flavour to match. Hopefully this was just a one off and things will be back to normal next time.

Worst fish and chips I have ever had. Battered sausage tasted disgusting and everything was bland from their battered fish down to the chips. ALL staff members were loud and gobby. Complaining about being about being at work and how they can’t wait to get to the pub in front of multiple customers Ran my teenagers, rude ones at that. Surprised the place is still open for business. Won’t be returning. Absolute rip off for what you get.

Always had beautiful food from here but tonight’s was very disappointing. My nephew found a long hair in his mince beef pie and chips (in the chips ). I had senior fish meal Deal and the fish 🐠 was very watery . Batter wasn’t even crisp . This was early evening too with not too many customers .

Turned up 20 mins before closing, the look on faces was a picture, was told we could only order one type of fish as nothing else available. To say we were not welcome was an under-statement, the staff were wanting to get home. Dont think I will bother again.

Poor. Batter was wet and sloppy, the peas were tank we had to throw them away and we had two long hairs in our chips. Terrible and won’t ever go back here again!

Had a very nice experience as always in this chip shop this evening, lovely atmosphere could hear chatting and laughing amongst all staff members seems like a lovely place to work. Lovely polite young girl taking and serving orders, have seen her in here a few times now, shes very efficient and engages well with the customers in the shop, thank you for a lovely dinner :)

Hi Ya there, Popped in ere in the other night for some grub and can o just say I’m so happy I did. This place is one of the best if not the best Chippy’s I’ve seen round in Peterborough. Young girl couldn’t catch her name but made my day the way she delivered my food. Battered sausage was second to none and Can’t wait to get my hands on more of that. Defo will be here again big thank you to Lacey I belive her name was she told me, for making my experiance here so welcoming 😁 John

Awful service. Order placed..2 portions of chips missing tried phoning nobody answered Beans that came with the meal looked like they was a wk old. Disgusting. Over priced rip off. Avoid!!

Have tried them several times - never particularly good chips, but chicken was nice, However tonight they surpassed their lukewarm chips by their Southern Fried Chicken. It was so hard on the outside you could not cut into it. You could not chew it - it was like concrete Add them together and it was all inedible, the little I managed has made me feel really unwell. It appeared to have been cooked twice, just reheated in the fryer - just my opinion. I won't be going back.

The staff were nice enough but the food a different matter I had fishcake and chips. The chips were hard, lukewarm and tasted like they had been sitting there for days. The fishcake was okay but almost burnt on the outside The two stars are for the staff, they were nice enough as said before, but the missing stars are because the food was really not good or palatable, at least half went in the bin. I won't be going back again.

The Fish was lovely, the chips were horrible, just bits and small pieces. Happens again and I will take my business elsewhere.

New girl serving requires more training

The fish & chips from Friar Tuck's used to be delicious. Only once did we have fish & chips that were luke warm, in the past. Now they seem to use old fat & the chips are usually old & luke warm. The staff were efficient, hygienic & friendly, when Paul worked there, not so much so now though. THIS PLACE HAS GONE DOWN IN MY ESTIMATION RECENTLY. They don't seem to care about quality anymore.

Picked up pie and chips at lunch time today. Pie was good - who can mess up a Pukka Chips are in the bin at Norman Cross layby - absolutely awful - dry- bland -odd looking. Will not be going back!

Wr had fish chips this evening i had a pensioners special, which I have had before but tonight's offering was the worst fish i have ever had It was just dry batter with hardly any fish in it. Disappointing.

Good fast service from the team. Good quality piece of cod, very nice batter and a good portion of chips. Very clean and tidy.

Unfortunately had, once again, one freshly cooked piece of cod and one was already cooked and looked dry. I asked if I could have two freshly cooked but was told they were all fresh. This was certainly not the case. Dry and inedible. Chips were also strange, some were nice and fresh others hard and again inedible. The girls at the front were fine but a lady with long hair who looked like she had just got out of bed, was bellowing orders at them from the back of the shop, then continued at the front while she was tidying up. Terrible way to behave in front of customers. Will not be going there again.

The young lad in there was very good with me, Served my order up very quickly. The only reason this isn’t a 5 star is because I didn’t ask for Salt but yet he goes and Smithers it all in Salt right in front of my face. Overall Love this shop will be back compliment to the chef

What a great service and straight forward and good food. The onion rings were fresh and crispy and tasty. Good to see. A choice of size for chips. And parking out front although not clear from the road.

Chips were great, Fish (Cod) was soggy, barely any batter on them.

Very Good Covid protocol activating a vibration dongle when your order is ready contactless payment also. Fish and Chips lacked the professional finish that your national dish requires Chips not cut only scored giving you a big piece of potato and half my Fish was missing just the batter there, a lot of frying oil left on the Fish as well . Hope this helps to improve the quality. Staff were polite and efficient.

Good staff fantastic food definitely recommend if in the area. And if your gluten free like my best mate they do foods that you carnt normaly eat every Tuesday and Saturday .

Ordered simple large chips & battered sausage, mushy peas and curry sauce with a bag of scraps. First of all took 10-15 to ‘bag up’ as I know non of my order is ever ‘made to order’. Nevertheless I gave benefit of the doubt. Arrived home after collecting to find no curry sauce or scraps, and what I can only describe as a sprinkle of chips. So disappointed, took back and got refund. (Chip shop further down street is much better)

Spent at least ten minutes waiting to be served, no big deal, one portion of chips was my order, was given a beeper and awaited service, for one portion of chips! Yes I get it was busy, but I only ordered a potion of chips, waited patiently for a portion of chips, yes just the one, 10mins-15mins, for a potion of chips that could have been served within seconds, upshot gave up waiting, handed back beeper, no chips a wait in a queue, polite conversation with those awaiting larger orders all for £1.90. Afterthought, not even an apology or attempt to serve me. Have used both the Whittlesey and Yaxley shops for years always good food, let your eye off the ball this time.

If you want gluten free fish and chips in Yaxley this is the place to go.

Good service. Very clean. Offers various menu including gluten free. Sometimes they forget to include items like tartare sauce. Shame they only offer gluten free one day a week now and this cannot be ordered or delivered online

Haddock was nice as freshly cooked but chips had been cooked and kept warm so were not at all fresh.....and chips were cold when we got home (in same village 3 mins up road!)

Service was great, all very clean and able to wait outside in car while order was prepared then my electronic fob vibrated to inform me my order was ready so no problems with social distancing. Being able to get Gluten free options whenever is great and food is always tasty.

Dry Haddock fish, either overcooked or not fresh bought on 10/12/2020. I've never had a fresh battered fish that was so dry as this, very unpleasant. The standard of this shop has gone downhill.

I have used this fish and chips few times before but was not impressed this time. Girl with nose piercing pulling down her mask fiddling with her nose and mouth then dishing up and serving our food. I know these masks are irritating but atleast wash your hands or santize straight after? Especially in times like this. Large portion of chips seemed like a small. Lincolnshire sausage didnt taste great either. Disappointed this time round as in the past its been lovely.

Collected my usual order and oh boy how delicious. Chips crisp and just as they should be, batter on fish crisp and crunchy, curry sauce just prefect. Portion size just right. Well done to all at this takeaway, especially Big Paul really on his top game today could only be better if they where free only joking.,

The food was excellent. Sadly had to wait nearly 10 mins for my order to be taken , i was the only one waiting. Food took longer as they concentrated on doing orders placed online. Both doors open cold wind and rain coming through. I know that covid19 has a detrimental effect to their business but a bit of planning could sort it out. Staff were friendly , had they not been so fixated on the online orders (4 on duty) Then it would be a 5 star rating

..We were in Yaxley and gave this place a try..Was impressed how clean it was and the food was absolutely first class! Next time we are this way we will definitely head here ! Fish was superb (also good to see no milk in the batter one of our party is lactose intolerant) and loads of chips... 10/10!

Just had our first fish &chips since lock down delicious.

Had Haddock,battered small sausage and chips last night. Sausage very dry and hardly any batter on it. The chips where very poor soggy with lots of black bits in the chips. Very poor quality of potatoes. Certainly not the normal quality from Friar Tucks Yaxley.

This is normally a great place to get your fish n chips, but not tonight! I wanted a change so chose the beef and onion pie, mistake. It was soggy, completely bland tasting and not warm enough to eat. To add insult to injury, I asked/paid for a large chips to share with my wife and we were given a regular portion, a small regular portion at that. Very, very disappointing.
