The Golden Lion Hotel Restaurant in Huntingdonshire

Great place,I won't review the rooms as I didn't use any of them, the lobby and food were perfectd. Go if you love food.

We had a lunch at the golden lion today I must say the waitress was very welcoming , the food was fantastic, we will definitely be eating there again.

The room was very clean, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The food was delicious at dinner and breakfast. All the staff were both friendly and professional. Would definitely return.

I stayed at the golden Lion last night, I grew up in St.ives and came to visit my mother’s grave - during my stay at the hotel I encountered a bed bug run across the bed sheet. I captured it in a glass and contacted reception who reluctantly put me in another room. I barely got any sleep out of fear that there may be more and in the morning I brought it to them in the glass. They didn’t seem to care at all and are denying it’s a bed bug and have offered no sort of compensation whatsoever. I’ve attached a photo of a bed bug from Google along with what I caught and also got confirmation from my dad, who formerly worked at rentokill pest control and is a Dr. Of Zoology. You can make up your own minds. I have never come across such unprofessional behaviour. AVOID THIS PLACE!

A lovely meal, especially the squid!

We had a very disappointing lunch here today. The restaurant was very busy. The moussaka was appalling. My guest didn’t want to draw attention and break up our conversations. She had left more than 70% of the food. Potatoes were not cooked, the top of the dish was burnt around the edges and therefore the sauce was dried out and had not bonded with the potatoes. My fish and chips were freshly out of the fryer but had not been drained of fat and as a consequence the plate had a coating of fat which made eating difficult. The Aubergine Parmigarnia was very salty, dry and not very digestible. Much of which was left on the plate. We spoke to the manager about the Moussaka and he said 'It was one of our most popular dish', and said 'sorry.' Lack of observation when clearing the table should have prompted him to enquiry at least! Too busy ..didn’t care? ………..Who knows?

Excellent food, lovingly prepared with a touch of flare. Really nice atmosphere and decor. Beer Reasonably priced. Good for family's having a meal, or a night out in the evening.

We visited on Halloween. Optics mostly empty, minimum glasses, unsmiling service. It was interesting felt surreal like we'd walked into an apparition. 🤔 If we went back today would it be there?

The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a relaxed atmosphere, staff are extremely attentive and the food was fantastic!

I can't review the food or hotel because I only called in for a morning coffee. The experience I had was excellent. It was easy to order at the bar, paying contactless was the only option, polite service throughout. The decor was lovely, the tables clean and well set out. Coffee came swiftly and with a smile. The malteasers in a glass were a nice touch. Toilets are very clean too.

Nice building and spacious bar/restaurant area. We popped in for luncheon. We sat down and a young waitress asked us to sit elsewhere as she was setting up for the dinner service - this was lunch time. Meanwhile, there were other clients in the same area. Limited vegetarian option. We wife had some sort of falafel in a pita bread type sandwich. The dish was bland/tasteless in the extreme and the pita bread was filled with cous cous!! Who puts cous cous in a sandwich? This cost us £7.95. Then a service charge was added when we came to pay the bill. I did not see any mention of this on the menu. We are in a pub here; I do not expect service charges in a pub. We are in the UK here. This place might be OK for an afternoon coffee, but not sure about luncheon.

A £16 menu for 2 courses sounds good well its misleading 4 choices of main course 4 choices for dessert , but they charge a extra £4 each surcharge per person =extra £8 on 2 courses written in very small print my friends eye sight is not good anyway. We had steaks (well it is in a doggy bag both of them .) Chips were OK some sort of green stuff on plate 🤔 ! Apple crumble was hard as rock on top. Asked if everything was OK at start of meal should have said no but as it was a meal for my birthday didn't want to affend my friend.

I've been to the Golden Lion many times before and the experience has typically been positive in the past. Until now... My husband booked a table for 10 people for my birthday three weeks before the date. They took his details over the phone and assured him that everything was arranged for us. So far so good, we thought. A couple of days before the party, my husband dropped off some table decorations at the restaurant. The staff took them and again, said that everything was fine with our booking and they would place the decoration at the table for our party. Unfortunately, on the day of the party, we turned up with a group of friends, some of whom travelled for 3 hours to get there, only to be told that they had no record of our booking! We were all shocked. How incompetent does a restaurant have to be to lose a group booking, despite having repeated contact with the customer before the event? However, what was even more shocking, was the complete lack of professionalism on the part of the Golden Lion employees. There was no attempt to make the situation right, no suggestions, and not even an apology! The response I received from the very young man who told me he was the Manager was, and I quote: "Mistakes happen". This clearly shows the attitude the Golden Lion management team has towards customers who trusted them and booked a table at the restaurant for a special event! They completely let us down on every level. The young lady who greeted us at the door kept wanting to check if the booking had been made for a different date by mistake - as if that was helpful to us in any way. Neither of them made any attempt to resolve the situation, or even handle it in a professional way. Any suggestions from us (e.g. do you have any other tables you could push together for us?; do you have a function room that we can use instead? or even: is there anywhere else you suggest we can go at lunch time on a Sunday that would have availability for a group of 10??) - were answered with an uninterested 'No'. Needless to say, I will not be setting my foot at Golden Lion again after this experience. For a restaurant to lose our booking, especially considering that we had repeated contact with them up to a couple of days before the party, is completely unacceptable. We were all extremely disappointed. Having such unprofessional and disengaged staff with no customer service skills and no motivation to own and resolve issues directly caused by them or their colleagues, makes me seriously question the future of this establishment.

Visited the restaurant for lunch today 27th Jan. The food was excellent but service poor and very slow 25 minutes to take the order followed by a further 30 minutes for food to arrive, I appreciate it is cooked fresh but there weren't many tables taken so they were not rushed off there feet. It is obvious further training for front of house staff is required . A great pity a it is a lovely building with a nice atmosphere and very convenient being in the centre of town

Eleven of us were booked in to eat on a Sunday lunchtime. The order took a long time coming and only one of us was satisfied with the meal. Two people had ordered a cream tea. The sandwiches were dry and inedible, as were the scones. One person had a beetroot salad, which comprised a plate covered in salad leaves, some slices of beetroot and half a dozen small squares of butternut squash. Another person had an undercooked burger, which had to go back to be redone. The others ate their meals but weren't completely happy with them. No-one wanted to make a fuss, so we didn't make a real complaint, although we did say we weren't completely happy. No apology was made or an offer to reduce the bill. We won't be eating there again.

Firstly, I should say that the staff here all seem to be really lovely and welcoming. That said, there are so many little things that spoil what should be a really nice experience. I dined here as a hotel resident and the restaurant was not at all busy so I could choose a nice table. The wine list is good in my view and I chose a very pleasant glass of red wine to start with - and it was delicious however it was clear to see that the glass was very smeary. Yes it had been through the dishwasher but not inspected or polished. The table was similarly grubby. My starter was moules. Again really tasty but there were a few niggles. When you are dealing with mussels, surely a finger-bowl should be provided. Also, with that tasty liquor, why no spoon provided. Nobody had checked the table as the pepper grinder was 'missing', and the sourdough seemed to arrive as a slice of ordinary [barely toasted] toast. I had a baked cod main dish. It arrived with speed as soon as I'd finished the moules which made me think it had been waiting under a lamp (or in the oven) for me to finish. It certainly looked pretty dry and I initially thought it might have to go back but to be fair it was very nice. This was accompanied by a glass of white wine. I finished with Expresso Coffee. In terms of value, I've no real complaints - and the staff were lovely so it is just the myriad of little things that mount up to make a good experience merely average. I did also note the next morning at breakfast that the poached eggs were rather over-done.

A very smart hotel. Rooms were very clean and appeared to be recently decorated. The bed was very comfortable. Plenty of hot water and both the bedrooms and public rooms were well heated. All staff were very friendly. It was nice to see a local beer available on handpump in the bar. Plenty of choice at breakfast. There was a new restaurant menu that had been introduced that week. Portion sizes seemed to vary according to what dish was selected and food was a little overcooked for our liking. Although there isn't an on site car park there is plenty of nearby public parking. It was nice to stay in the cnetre of town and be close to shops, pubs restaurants etc. Would definately recommend this hotel and come back again. A very relaxing break in comfortable surroundings

Had lunch with family, quality and flavour of food very good. Seabass linguine VERY disappointed portion size more like a starter, had to search for the Seabass, 2 tiny slithers of Seabass (the size is less than a small finger) complete rip off, was expected a Fillet of Seabass for £21.00.!!!!😲 Service not great, had to ask for drinks several times, the waitress took half the order of drinks only did not ask the other half of the table and disappeared, her knowledge was very limited and not attentive.

Spent 3 nights. Yes had to park down the road but only £4 for 23 hours. Can pick up and drop off outside hotel. Rooms exceptionally clean. Best coffee and tea selection I’ve ever had. Comfortable beds. Nice toiletries in en-suite. Ate in restaurant and had nice food. Lovely breakfasts. The staff are a credit to the place. All friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay again.

It is very average. Most eateries were empty and that didn't appeal. We enjoyed our food but it was not that much better than Wetherspoons fare, and of course twice that price. Good service and a nice place to be though. Average.

A wonderful 2-night stay in a comfy, spacious room. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. Breakfast each morning was cooked to order with a great choice and we enjoyed a delicious evening meal in the restaurant on our first night. Truly a great little escape!

During Covid this pub is locking the front door and you have to wait outside to be seated, this is not a problem and a good idea.We approached the pub to see the bar lady stood leaning against a wall talking to a “regular”. We knocked on the door and stood and waited for the bar lady to finish her conversation. 5 minutes later there was a que of around 8 people wanting to enter the pub. One of the que knocked on the window, the bar lady once again looked up, saw us and the long forming que and ignored it, returning to her conversation. Someone again knocked on the window. The bar lady came storming over to the door and shouted “I don’t appreciate you knocking on the windows when I am having a conversation”. All members of the long que then asked to be seated, the bar lady replied “it’s not my f##king job to seat people. The pub had only two people in it at this time, the “regular” the bar lady wanted to chat to so much. At this point the que had around 10 paying customers in it. We all as a que decided to take our money elsewhere and leave the bar lady to her conversation. If I was the owner/management I would be annoyed that my staff would rather have a good old chat and left ten people stood outside waiting to enter all of which took there business elsewhere

As I have slated the hotel on the hotel section it's only fair I redress the balance and say that the restaurant experience was excellent. The food showed creativeness and flair and the pork and lamb dishes were to die for. Well done chef! Will return to the restuarant if in St Ives again.

Couldn’t fault the service here. The waitress was so friendly as were all the staff. Great social distancing and super clean too plus the food was fantastic. We ordered the sea bass and the chefs pie. Large portions and beautifully presented. Will be returning during our stay in St Ives.

What a beautiful place to stay, the hotel is a fantatstic price for the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms, breakfast is always amazing with nothing missing at £10 ppStaff are all young and vibrant and give a good feel to the place and very helpful. We have been visiting this pub regularly since lockdown lifted and must say how professional the team always are, how clean the environment is and how delcious the food consistently is. Highly recommend. Warm and friendly with great pub grub

Lovely hotel. Stayed on a number of occasions and great location. Restaurant and staff are always happy to help and food is always good. Parking can be a pain sometimes only if you want to park directly outside but big car parks 5 minute walk if that. Only reason for not a 5 star is the rooms on summer when hot can almost be unbearable specially if you get above the kitchen. Rooms recently where all refitted and are lovely, the single rooms are good value for money and a small double bed but these can get hot and I prefer to pay slightly extra and stay in the normal doubles.Will not find a better location in st Ives or hotel.

Took my family of 5 for a late lunch today on this very hot day. First time in a restaurant since lock down. Felt very comfortable and not at all crowded. Very pleasant staff, quick service and great food, also comfortable temperature in the restaurant. Highly recommend.

Called in for drinks due to hot weather,hotel was lovely and cool,staff and drinks were excellent. Well worth a visit. Very clean and tidy with all the Covid 19 equipment etc.

My wife and I have our dinner here love staff and service given that we are only just coming out of lock down we both appreciate that people were giving a great service to us and food and drinks were fast and total great we will love to come back again for a meal

Nice friendly welcome, comfortable & relaxing environment.Sunday lunch was perfectly pleasant - good selection of meats etc.(can also order from the normal a la carte), all at reasonable prices. Short but pretty good wine list again, at reasonable prices.If I have one grouse it is that we wanted to eat together but one meal was served about 5 minutes after all the others meaning there was a wait whilst the already served meals grew cold. They did apologise for the mishap & hopefully they will do what they can to avoid this sort of thing in future.Otherwise all pretty good & at a reasonable price, not top-end but perfectly pleasant.

Lovely hotel. Great reception. Very clean and extremely comfortable bed. Really enjoyed our stay. Only downfall was the very loud and noisy cleaners who shouted to each other at 8 am Sunday morning. Not the best way to be woken!

We visited as a family group on recommendation - we were not disappointed. Although busy (always a good sign that they're doing things right) we were dealt with quite quickly - the food was superb and what a meal! A huge dinner (no starter as we'd been warned the dinners were big) left us no room for dessert. A lovely place with great food.

We visited this hotel for the weekend with friends and arranged to eat there on the Saturday night. When we came down the restaurant it was very busy but we were soon shown to our table and offered menus. The service was very good and the majority of the food was very pleasant. Unfortunately 3 of us had the lamb and although it was quite tasty, all of us were disappointed that it was quite tough in places and not what we had expected. One of the plates of lamb was very very bloody and did put my friend off eating it. All in all it was a good stay and I would recommend the hotel to anyone coming to stay in St Ives. The only downside is that there is no on site parking and you have to leave your vehicles on the long stay car park about a 5 minute walk away, although a £3 a day it's not extortionate. There is a loading bay outside the hotel but when we arrived on Friday afternoon the market was in full swing and the bay was full of traders vehicles.

As our usual go to place if we wish to eat out on a Sunday has closed, we needed an alternative, Sunday nights are a problem as many places are closed, fortunately the Golden Lion is open, We ordered a selection of the sharing starters, all excellent, especially the mayo with the chicken. The fillet beef pie was a proper pie, not a casserole with a pastry lid. The Roast Chicken dinner came with all the right things. Lemon posset sublime and the sticky toffee pudding was fine. Good value and will be visiting again shortly

Been staying a number of occasions over the last 24months and got to say the staff try very hard to make your experience relaxing. Rooms are to a high standard since the refurb. In the summer some rooms can be very very hot but how often that happens you can deal with. Food is always to a good standard.

To start my standards are high and being well traveled please read my reviews as I call myself “Victor Meldrew” lol but can’t find any fault with this superb hotel and staff.We booked a two night Travelzoo deal for £119 which included full English breakfast two nights in a standard double with a bottle of Prosecco which we were allowed to have with our superb evening meal.The management must have an easy job with their staff as all were very helpful and a special thanks to Harry and Jason and the girls who were very attentive and a credit to the hotel.The room no19 a superb standard double excellent with a king size bed sooooo comfortable large TV bottled water and complementry toiletries with lovely soft large towels.We were late in booking a table for two Sat evening but but Harry was able to accommodate and we had a superb meal in which again they allowed us to enjoy our complementary Prosecco with our meal.Breakfast was superb fresh fruit juice great coffee and a fantastic full cooked breakfast menu in which I just managed to eat the full EnglishTwo Nights a bottle of Prosecco Two full English breakfasts £119 excellent fantastic Value and service.We will be back and the staff a credit to The Coaching Inn Group and The Golden Lion.Thanks again“Victor Meldrew”

This old coaching in is a great little place. It looks like it's been refurbished fairly recently and looks very nice. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Although there was only two of us they gave us a family room which was very spacious and clean. The selection of hot drinks was complimented by lovely biscuits and bars of chocolate. There were even dressing gowns in the wardrobe too! Amazing!! We had lunch there when we arrived which was very nice (as was the house red!). However breakfast was a little disappointing as the spinach was gritty and the use of finely chopped parsley (?) was a bit too much. That aside it's a really lovely place slap bang in the middle of the town. We'll definitely be staying there again when we go back.

AS usual (I have been going for over 20 years) last Friday we arirved at 11.30am to have a coffee before ordering food, We got a table for four.However when odering our coffee I was told that as I had not reserved a table I could not have any food, as they were busy?????I believe theiir action should lose them them (if they have it) their AA & RAC ratings as hotels should be open for food during the day. Also, not sure Coaching Inns nationally follow this "new policy" of refusing to serve food. After 20 years they have now lost my custom.

We stayed here for one night to go to a party and were only sorry that we couldn’t stay longer. The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. We had a large, family room which was beautifully decorated and with a really comfy bed. There is fabulous golden lion artwork everywhere. I can thoroughly recommend the omelette for breakfast and my husband enjoyed the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Breakfast was great value at only £10 each. The hotel is lovely but don’t expect a view from the window as it is right up close to the neighbouring church. The only downside would be the lack of parking which is on street and restricted at certain times. We will definitely be booking again and would thoroughly recommend.

We enjoyed our visit here and had the a very tasty meal. There was a small hiccup with the order but the staff promptly put it correct. I love the look of the restaurant now, so much more pleasant than the drinking hole I used to come to when I was 18. I would go again.

A really good Hotel with excellent dining facilities . We had booked the Annexed dining room for an early Xmas family get together of 13 people. Service, excellent, food, terrific and the price reasonable. The room was beautifully decorated in keeping with the festive season, and was ideal for that very special ( but small ) party. Will definitely book again for next year

What a fantastic place, stumbled across this when out for a walk and it is utterly charming. Old school friendly hospitality with super efficient staff, very dog friendly and happy to welcome children.

The building had been very well updated inside, lovely range of gins and cocktails to try and the food was well cooked and presented and portions ample. A very pleasant evening.

Having moored up in St Ives, we had a nice walk around and found The Golden Lion for dinner. Menu looked good and we got a table for 4 straight away. Food was exceptional and I mean exceptional. 3 had the Chicken Pie and Mash and were raving about it, and the Sticky Toffee Sundae was also great. Good service, great food and nice location in a town we’ll return to, give it a try

Stopped here to break up a journey, and so glad we did. Lovely looking building and very well presented as you enter. Greeted by a friendly girl who offered menus and seats. Good selection of ales and other drinks, good menu. The staff were all very friendly and professional, and the food was stunning, extremely well presented and tasty. Although it was a stop off we will no doubt return when over that way.

All the staff were friendly and helpful, large clean rooms with large baths, great food great location. I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay, or just an evening out. Good range of food and drinks, wonderful cocktails. Will definitely return.

Came here Wednesday for lunch we ordered sandwiches and a drink food is always good here but I’m not sure if they changed the menu normally you get some potato chips with your sandwich and salad we didn’t this time which was a bit disappointing you seem to pay a lot for getting little only a minor point but was a shame let’s hope it’s rectified soon

Lovely pub with good grub! Friendly staff and very clean all round Dishes are varied with not just average pub food!

Was greeted by the lovely waitress (Gemma) and we was shown to our table, drinks was bought straight away and our dinners were bought out with in five minutes. Nice roast dinner though slightly pricey.

Came here again as allways a nice place to chill we had few cold drinks as baking outside as usual staff great girl who served us very polite and welcoming will defo be back keep up the good work guys manager should be proud

The staff were truly excellent and the food was far better than average for a hotel restaurant. Not the least expensive venue in St.Ives but worth the extra for a tasty and well presented meal.

Zoals gezegd keurig hotel. Alles lijkt wel nieuw. Geweldig Engels ontbijt. Krijg je niet op. Alles vers. Vers fruit aanwezig. Fijne kamer. Goede douche en een heerlijk bed. Koffie faciliteiten aanwezig op de kamer. Parkeren echt vlakbij voor een paar pond. Zeker voor herhaling vatbaar.

Ate dinner here as a last resort. Not my first choice but not bad either. I’d go back and try a different meal.

A friend treated me to afternoon tea at the Golden Lion recently. The decor is very fresh and feels quite luxurious, the waiting staff were very friendly and polite indeed, despite being very quiet we did have to wait quite a while to be served another drink, no one came to check the food was okay orvifcwe needed anything. The male manager on duty ignored us quite a few times.

Excellent customer service, generous portions lovely setting in the centre of St Ives Cambridgeshire.

Visited on Saturday for early mother’s day, we were the first sitting in the restaurant area as opposed to the walk in area and bar area. Staff were friendly and helpful. Service was a little slow. Food was fabulous, thanks. Restaurant decor is modern and fresh. All round a top restaurant and would recommend.

Our first, but not last visit here. A fantastic lunch enjoyed by all. Staff very friendly and efficient. Best Sunday roast out in a long time. Highly recommend!

We decided to try The Golden Lion as our first choice had no spaces. We were unable to get a table in the restaurant but were offered a table in the bar area. Friendly staff advised us to order at the bar although waiters were served some tables. The roasts were reasonably priced and served with little delay although they were pretty full.

Just about ordered in time before the 21:00 deadline for food came into force on a recent Friday night at The Golden Lion Hotel. This was a blessing because the food was excellent and overall experience was very good.

We decided to walk into town and then find somewhere to eat. This place has recently been refurbished so we thought we would try it. Very busy atmosphere, refurbishment very tastefully done. Most seats were taken. We ordered our drinks, I sat at an empty table but was quickly told the seats were reserved. The sign was quite subtle and I hadn’t noticed, I was a bit embarrassed so quickly got up and moved to a high bar stool, not my preferred type of seat. A little annoyed the waitress was not more helpful. We noticed someone was leaving and sat at a table for two. We then ordered soup, and a sandwich. The order came reasonably quickly and the food was good, though I had asked for brown rather than white bread, and I had to ask for some butter.

I was staying in St Ives on business, so came here in my own for dinner.

The restaurant area is fresh, clean and seems new. The menu is extensive with lots of options. We all had trouble choosing what to have. The servings were all a decent size and the food itself was very tasty. Desserts were equally appetising. We will be coming back soon to try more dishes.

I believe that fish and chips should be served on very hot plates, so I was very happy with mine. My wife had the ribs and asked to take half away since there was so much. This was not a problem for the staff.

We have been saving for a whole year to have Christmas dinner out this year. We got to the golden lion restaurant at 2.30pm as dinner was for 3pm. We ordered proscecco to have with our meal. There wasn’t any. Big disappointment. But we got over it. Then we waited for our starter. That must of arrived at 4.30. We had children with us so we were all rather hungry. It was nice . I had the soup. Well then we waited for our main meal. That turned up at 6pm. My sons roast beef didn’t turn up until we had all nearly finished. Very bad service. No cranberry sauce no bread sauce no Yorkshire with the beef. Eventually the coffee turned up, no mince pies as promised. The meal was nice service terrible. Bit disappointing after saving for a whole year. Wouldn’t go there again on Christmas Day. The strange thing was there was only 2 tables. If they can’t cope with that then there’s no hope.

We came to the golden lion last Christmas and had a wonderful meal. We decided after such a great experience to return this year.

Visited today for lunch with a friend. After taking our order, no wait staff visited us for over an hour and a half. We left having wasted our time.

went for afternoon tea, sandwiches poor and not enough!! Service was poor and prosecco came when we'd nearly finished!! Not worth the £16 they charge. Scones without jam so had to ask. What a shame as we are local, and I was looking forward to a special occasion with friends.

Came for a function leading up to Christmas the function room is very nice and is situated at the back of the hotel.. we got drinks at the front bar before going to the function room staff were pleasent and professional.. The function room was filling up nicely and everyone was taking their places.. this is where the staff should have come along and made notes of who was sitting where and that would have saved the shambles of the main coures. By the time the last gentleman on our table had been served his main course the other 9 people on the table had finished eating and there were no vegetables for him.. he was very embarassed and didnt complain.. the food was very good but a little forward planning from the banqueting staff would have gone a long way..

We visited with a group of friends today for a christmas meal. Firstly we were surprised there was no brown bread and butter with the prawns and smoked salmon and no roll with the soup. On to the main course the lambs was rather chewy and the fat hadn't been rendered down so looked rather unappetizing and when we got home and reread the menu we were missing the feta and cranberry stuffing. Dessert followed Eton mess made with a crumbled bought meringue nest and no cream just a small quinelle of ice cream on top.There was no butter with the cheese and biscuits and no cream or ice cream with the sticky toffee pudding which came with an addition of a square of greaseproof paper underneath,which i showed the waitress who said she would show chef but did come back with any comment or apology from chef

My wife and I stayed here in April and had a very nice stay. The location is excellent and our room was beautiful. I could not get parked out front but that was not a problem as the weather was fine. The only negative was that breakfast took a long time and was only ok. Apart from that our stay was excellent.

Visited last night and was very disappointed. Rang to book table but told fully booked so could only do 8.15pm. Walked in and there only a handful of tables occupied. Manager told me it was because they had a function on but they need to be able to still run the restaurant. Gluten free options are very limited...even the rice has gluten in! Staff didnt know about gluten options - they need better training. The food was overpriced for the quality - husbands lamb was overcooked and fatty, raw potatoes but the sauce was nice. My thai red curry was ok...sauce was nice but the chicken was dry and overcooked. There were some positives...the wine was lovely and the decor was nice. Spoke to manager about issues and she handled it very professionally. Wouldnt recommend this place for food.

Not a good experience from trying to book in and book evening dinner, on the Saturday night our room was on the back above function room and we had the music of the band vibrating until midnight in our room . We complained but no general manager around, whilst we were staying the Saturday and Sunday a male staff when trying to book dinner pointing round restaurant humming that there was no tables we felt like walking out if I had not paid before arrival. Later to find out we could have had an earlier dinner as the restaurant had three couples in . Very cold in this pub /hotel . We left a night early . Shame as the food was good but no one in charge over the very young staff. As one male staff on breakfast was stood eating toast and I had to ask for plates to be cleared to carry on finishing breakfast . When you could find staff . Some of the staff tried to rectify at dinner after a complaint by being chatty and helpful. No one on reception it was left to whoever you could find . Badly run . No one in charge ,

We went for a latish Sunday lunch, we were quickly found a table in a very busy restaurant. We both had a very nice glass of wine each and waited for our starters. The first course was lovely, but maybe a bit much when we got our Roast. It was very tasty, but a word of warning, try not to have anything to eat for several days before, then you might be able to eat the whole meal!

Very regemental. We arrived 14.30 and were informed rooms ar not ready until 15.00. Anitber couple booking in a few minutes after us were told to wait also!!

We dropped in for lunch on a market day. The Golden Lion has been done up since we last visited. The service was excellent and the food good. Nothing spectacular, but give it a try if you are in St. Ives.
