My family and I visited the crown for a Sunday lunch while we were on holiday in West Bay. Right from the point of booking the table up until the food was served the whole experience was delightful. The landlady Karen was so helpful and friendly right from the get go. The food was of an excellent standard and all of the waiting staff couldn’t have done enough to help. They were extremely friendly and kind particularly to my daughter. we came from Bath to West Bay and this pub was only a matter of miles away. We also purchased some of Karin’s home-made pies to take away and they were absolutely beautiful. Quite frankly this is one of the best pubs I have ever been in overall for a meal. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this pub. Excellent value for money. Thank you, Karin, your husband (sorry was it David?and the waiting staff who were all outstanding. We had arrived a little late and the staff were completely understanding and couldn’t have done any more for us.

I would 100% recommend this place. A warm welcome. A “daily” menu with many home cooked offerings; such as beef & ale pie or fish pie with fresh vegetables. A fantastic choice of puddings such as Baileys brûlée, ginger pudding & custard, blackberry fool, toffee & honeycomb cheesecake, marmalade & sultana bread & butter pudding to name but a few with the option of custard, cream or home made ice creams such as ginger or honeycomb. Lovely beer garden but not suitable for todays weather ☔️

We had a holiday in Dorset and after checking local restaurants reviews online, telephoned the Crown Inn in Uploders to book a table. I spoke to Karin the chef and after explaining my husband’s dietary needs, she said that her menu could be adjusted to suit him. When we arrived, Karin sat at our table and went through the menu advising which dishes could be tweaked for my husband. The food was delicious. I have never known such a high level of customer service and a willingness of all the staff to ensure we had a good experience. It was also our 50th Wedding Anniversary and David played Happy Anniversary by Slim Whitman which was a lovely touch. Once again, a big thank you to Karin, David and Debbie for all their kindness on our special day. We will certainly visit again if we are in the area.

We were passing through towards Devon, and I read the reviews on The Cross Inn , and I thought "naah, nothing is that good". HOW wrong could I be !. Meeting Dave at the bar, when we entered was an absolute joy. Just what a pub landlord should be, welcoming, informative and very jolly . He informed that there were only two tables free, but was happy to accommodate for just drinks. The place was packed for a weekday lunch ! . When I saw ( and detected the aromas ) the dishes coming from the kitchen, I realised why . My salivating juices got the better of me and I requested a portion of chips to share. My dimpled handle ( poured without request, thankfully ) of Palmer's Copper was absolutely fantastic, perfect temperature, my wife enjoyed her half too. The chips were served most enthusiastically by Debbie ( thanks Debs ) , which were a delight. Debs fussed over us, sauces, salt, vinegar etc, all to ensure we were happy, just for a portion of chips ! All in all, a great experience and a great price. We will be back, love it.

We went for Sunday Lunch with friends, superb food, very well kept beer, real friendly pub, staff were spot on. We had two roast beef, one roast pork and a lamb dinner, one member of our party opted for a small plate which was a great choice for her as portions are generous. Everything was cooked to perfection, I loved the celeriac and parsnip mash. We all opted for old fashioned sherry trifle for dessert, wonderful! The Crown must get through a lot of sherry!! A great English country pub. Having paid our bill i thought for quality of food, service and setting it was great value. Next time we visit our friends we will be back.

We visited on 10/09/23 with our Labrador Reg who can smell a good roast dinner when there’s one about! This roast dinner was by far the best we have had and we have eaten many on our travels. We tried the lamb and the pork, both melt in your mouth accompanied with a wonderful assortment of fresh vegetables, extra gravy, apple sauce and mint sauce all provided, absolutely fantastic! David and Karin and their staff were friendly and welcoming, attentive but not overly. The pub is small with many attractive furnishings, the customers following us in seemed to be known to the landlords and staff so made it an extremely friendly atmosphere. We will certainly visit again and need to pay for a navy rum which was missed off our bill. Thank you again for a gorgeous lunch, not sure the review does it justice!

Went with 5 friends for dinner who were staying with me from Manchester, have to admit not my first visit being local. The food is all freshly cooked and is divine made with high quality locally sourced ingredients. Menu offers a good choice for different tastes and large portions. The homemade pie of the day is fabulous. Dave runs the bar and is there to welcome everyone whether just for a drink or dining. Karin is in the kitchen and local friendly staff ensuring diners are looked after. My friends from the Manchester area really impressed that it's not the usual mass produced cuisine. The Crown focusing on less covers, but to a personal and high standard. Hence it is essential to ring ahead and book to avoid disappointment as it is a disappointment to miss this gem in Rural West Dorset.

What can I say? Absolutely AMAZING service! We are on holiday in our motorhome at Highlands End and fancied a roast dinner. We googled pub takeaways and found The Crown Inn did this so ordered a roast beef and roast lamb dinner. They not only put the meat and roast potatoes on our own plates for us (after warming them up ) but put all of the vegetables and gravy in separate dishes complete with lids and extra tin foil to keep everything warm. There was so much there it could have quite easily fed a family and the 2 ladies that prepared everything were just lovely. Could not have asked for a better service ANYWHERE! Thank you so much

The current lockdown has meant the local pubs nearby have closed, not the warm and welcoming Crown Inn. We rang late evening for a takeaway, the following day. We were contacted and Karen, the proprietor was making Chicken and Mushroom or Beef and Ale pies for that day. We ordered over the phone for an 1800 pickup and were also able to order a flagon of Copper ale as well. On arrival I was met by the perennially jovial and efficient Dave, the boss. The beer was dispensed, money taken and at 1800 on the dot our food was provided. The packaging is excellent and kept the food piping hot for my 8 minute dash home . It was all delicious and we cannot recommend this pub highly enough. This is a very good solution for an evening meal during these difficult times. We can't wait to try another item from the very good menu and to return for dinner after the lockdown.

I have always said that you have to be careful when reading Trip Advisor reviews and take a balanced view, being aware that some reviews are not factual. We have always thought that The Crown provided excellent food, but this time that was not the case. The lasagne that my partner chose had hard pieces in it. I chose the good old standard of ham egg and chips. The ham was so thin that it had probably been sliced with a microtome, and was still tough, and underdone. The eggs were overdone.Very unfortunate, and I trust this was a one off experience, as this is a cosy little pub, with high standards normally.

We called on the off chance of being able to book a table for lunch. Karin had been unable to get to the phone in time, but called us straight back. What a lovely experience we had. Made to feel very welcome, all the covid rules followed to the letter & oh my days, the food is wonderful. Not a huge menu, but to my mind that always makes for better food and having said that, I was torn between the pie of the day (chicken & leek), liver bacon & onions or the lamb and sausage hotpot. We plumped for the liver. It took a reassuring amount of time to be served, so we knew it wasn't just put in the microwave. An absolute treat on a breezy autumn day.Karin came out the back as we were getting into our car to check that everything had been OK. The waitress was lovely & such reasonable prices. On returning to The Crown Inn after its recent reopening we felt as Odysseus must have felt on seeing his home. It’s difficult to put your finger on exactly what makes this place SO special. The beer is well-kept, the food is high quality (and plentiful), the atmosphere warm, the welcome friendly and professional. David and Karen select the very nicest of locals to work here with them and they have stayed utterly loyal to their community and staff during Lockdown, providing a takeaway service and phone calls to check on the lonely and vulnerable. It is no surprise that this place gets such a high rating and great reviews. We treat it as our local and we’re aware that this is likely to be the last job that Karen and Dave do before they retire, and when they do we won’t see their like again. We visit the Crown a couple of years ago when on holiday near Bridport, this time it was combined with a visit to Abbotsbury gardens. We had another well presented and taste full meal, then a forty mile trip back to Sandbanks.

Great country pub serving hearty portions of wholesome food and Palmers beer for tired walkers. Fantastic recipe for success and beautifully managed front of house by Dave with able assistance from Karen in the kitchen. The sort of locals pub it is a pleasure to visit.

We stayed in a cottage a minutes walk from the pub and were made to feel welcome as soon as we walked in. The landord & landlady were lovely and friendly and also welcomed our golden retriever . We went 3 or 4 times during the week and had dinner there too, great food & Karen makes the best pies ever! Wish we had a local like that near our home - thanks Dave & Karen for making us feel so welcome ! Susan & Alan

Very good service and food which certainly does not come from pre-packs! It is refreshing to see that the landlady is cooking the meals and takes an obvious pride in doing what she does. I was impressed with the quality of the food and the service and the landlord was attentive and friendly. Will definitely return.

Rang ahead to book and was asked ‘are there any dietary requirements ?’. I said we had 3 vegetarians in our party. On arrival, the menu board only had a couple of veg options, then one of the kitchen ladies came straight out to describe what they could do. Food was delicious and well presented, good home cooking, we couldn’t fault it, totally recommend this pub, but book to get a table. A wonderful find in the depths of Dorset.

Looking for a light lunch of sandwiches, which is difficult to find in an area of gastro pubs that no longer do sanwiches. So this was a treat. The bread was fresh, the fillings were tasty and the salad garnish had a lovely dressing. The pub is quaint and has a lovely peaceful beer garden. The good thing about going somewhere new is that you discover that their menu looks so delicious that it actually would be difficult to choose from the many mouth watering dishes. A cheerful welcome added to the pleasure. We will be visiting again without a doubt. what a find!

A saturday night in July and we were so glad we booked to eat here. The two ladies in the kitchen were happy to discuss the extensive menu and it appeared that everything was cooked to order.. My husband could not recommend the curry highly enough. Delicious. We couldn't eat a dessert as we were full but the publican was welcoming, the atmosphere friendly and the prices of food and ale very good.

We were staying a few minutes walk from the Crown, and although we knew beforehand everyone had recommended that you book a table we decided to chance it and just turn up when they opened at 18:30. The landlord was really helpful and friendly but explained that if we wanted to eat it would likely be 20:45 before they could get us in. Maybe he took pity on us, but he managed to get our order and the food came at 19:30. Everything on the menu, and all the food we saw coming out looked great, but we decided to plump for the Lamb Curry - best decision we made. It was fantastic. I really suggest that if you want to be assured of great food when you want it you book ahead, this place is rightly popular.

We were lucky enough to stay nearby and having read good things about the food, we decided to try it out. We arrived early, not realising it doesn't open until 6:30pm, we also didn't realise that booking was an absolute must here, the reason is this pub is massively popular for a really good reason. The landlord did his upmost to accommodate us, but warned us that it might be two hours before he could feed us due to being full and this was a Tuesday evening. Luckily he managed to squeeze us in a little earlier, we both had the curry and it was amazing. Portions are huge, all food was freshly cooked to order and from the plates we saw leaving the kitchen of the highest quality. We visited again on Wednesday but this time only for a drink and it was busier than the Tuesday, so once again I emphasise you must book. We only wish we were there longer to try more of the dishes.

We felt that we deserved a treat after childminding our granddaughters (6 & 3) for two days, but our initial choice of hostelry was closed. And so it was that we arrived at The Crown. What a happy accident, a friendly and helpful landlord, chatty locals and particularly attentive kitchen staff. The Campari and Soda was so good that I succumbed to a second, the menu choice was varied and just a little bit different. And food presented beautifully and promptly. We will definitely be back!

In short. Excellent. Lovely country pub with traditional british flair written all over it. A real find. Lovely food, Dog friendly, welcoming staff and a lovely pint of IPA. The only criticism is that Soda and lime for £3 is far too steep; this needs to be reviewed. Other than that, I cannot recommend this pub enough!!

Staying locally booked an evening meal whilst popped in on way to lodgings. Very friendly & welcoming. Went back for the meal greeted like old friends. Food was freshly home cooked, very generous portions, the macaroni cheese (great to see not called mac & cheese) was to die for, couldn't believe the size of the gammon & chips, beer bit pricy but everything else made up for it. A must
