A great venue. There were 30 of us for a three course lunch and have been here several times for special occasion events. The food and service were great. We would definitely recommend The Crown hotel.

I love the crown. Have been a fair few times. This visit was a bit disappointing though. The good bits… we booked last minute but were found a table and greeted warmly. The service was excellent throughout. Thank you. I love the ambience too. My husband enjoyed his meal though he found it quite salty. The big disappointment was the pizza. No claims were made about it but I took one look and a sniff and I think it was frozen pizza heated up. Good frozen pizza, I’ll grant you, but nevertheless frozen. I would not have ordered it had I known this. We had coffees which were good but were disappointed by the absence of a little cube of fudge. The staff didn’t know, but it was our wedding anniversary. Ah well! They forgot the mints with the coffee at our reception too… we didn’t complain as we just wanted a nice evening.

Very good value for money, the room were a bit to colourful for my like but nice and comfortable and very clean definitely recommended, breakfast a bit expensive £15 for egg on toast, coffee and juice I think it’s a bit stiff but was nice next time a pop to the centre good choice of breakfast for less. On departure just drop the key and I got just a thanks nothing else I would have expected at least I hope you had a good stay or have a nice day I guess talking to other colleagues was more important ( just saying as I own business and sometime people forget the most important part. Definitely I will visit again even do it’s perfect

I’ve had the misfortune of two successive meals at this hotel, entertaining visiting friends and family, and embarrassingly on both occasions the meat was completely inedible and was returned to the kitchen. Vegetables were underdone and the plate/food generally was far from hot. I for one certainly won’t be returning any time soon which is a shame as the atmosphere/decor suggested a better experience.

Lunch with friends booked weeks in advance. In the bar as one friend was bringing a dog. Unlike our previous visits, we were not greeted by staff and had to go up to the bar to find out specials etc. Staff were at best disinterested- bordering rude. Eventually we were told that we had to order at the bar as they no longer did table service in the bar. We asked to move into the restaurant (dog was a no show) and told no, despite there being a large amount of empty tables. It’s not an easy task remembering food and drink orders for 9 people at a bar so I would definitely advise bringing a notebook! Then we waited, waited and waited! Table booked for 12:30 and we had arrived ahead of time… mains came out at 2:25! Most of us had to get back for work the next morning so we didn’t risk ordering deserts…. Be warned- restaurant prices in a bar for no service whatsoever. Food was ok but after a 2 hour wait I would have eaten my grannies slippers so I’m probably not the best judge!

Silver service prices, Wetherspoons service! We asked for a dog friendly restaurant and we’re recommended the Crown. Sadly like most ‘dog friendly’ eateries, what they mean is they charge you the same as the restaurant but throw you in the bar. No service, no menus, and still charging the same as the more elevated restaurant. If you have a dog, avoid. Go for a country pub instead.

Midsummer’s evening and predictably wet and cold, but after a long drive, fancied a hot dinner. Our B&B recommended local hotel/restaurant The Crown and we Googled the menu and were seduced, Good choice of dishes, excellent wine-list, we had the roasted sea-bream served on creamy mash with endame beans, scorched baby gem, cherry tomatoes and a balsamic jus. Heaven. We had a superb bottle of the Picpoul, and to follow, the chocolate torte with butterscotch ice-cream, all cut with a sharp orange sauce, beautifully judged. Expertise and passion in the kitchen for a change, in this dreary country.

I can highly recommend. Stayed for a long weekend, room was comfortable and well equipped (bed was very comfy), staff were smiley and friendly, bar area was warm and cosy and there were good COVID arrangements. We had an evening meal and breakfast which were all great (the porridge and banana for brekkie was so nice). I would have given 5 stars if it wasn’t for the slightly lax food service, wondering where your main course is after an hour and toast being forgotten, small things but they just remove from an almost perfect experience. I can see management read these reviews - please, just get that service a bit sharper and more communicative and you’ll be firing on all cylinders. On the whole - I highly recommend, a really enjoyable stay.

Meals were tasty, however we waited for our drinks (bottle of wine) for over 40 minutes, meaning our drinks arrived towards the end of our meal (pointing it out didn't help). We noticed that people dinning around us experienced similar problem. We were intrigued and went to see what the situation is like at the bar. It was very far from the level of busy that would cause such a delay. Given your prices and style, we suggest this should not be happening. Staff make you feel like you’re an inconvenience rather than a customer but the food is good and the pub gardens and indoors is nice.

My other half and I went to the Crown Hotel for an evening meal recently on my birthday. We both had a starter, main and pudding. I had a duck hash starter, sirloin steak main and old-fashioned rice pudding to end. The duck hash starter was scrumptious! I get used to starters at other restaurants being a bit something and nothing, but this really hit the mark. I could happily have cancelled the rest of the meal after the duck! But then the steak. And that was pretty good, although the duck had already stolen the show. But then the rice pudding arrived. I’m not sure what type of rice it was but the grains were jumbo and a touch al dente. It was perfect. It tied with the duck for the best course. Our waitress, Lynne, was also brilliant. Good waiters and waitresses are few and far between, but Lynne is one of them. All in all, it was one of the very best meals that I’ve ever had.

Sunday lunch, starter came quickly and then we waited, and waited, and waited. Order lost / delayed as they forgot to tell the kitchen to cook the main course. Best tip. Only order a single course if you want food to be served

My wife and I usually pop in here on a Saturday afternoon for coffee and a cake. Whilst I cannot fault the coffee or the cake, the time it takes to bring the coffee is ridiculous. There is an abundance of staff mingling around but the service level needs to be jacked up.

The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere with burning fires. The staff were friendly and helpful. Despite being a little let down that they had sold out of the veal tenderloin, this wasn’t a problem with a decent menu with a wide variety of dishes. We had a burger, steak pie and salmon. The accompaniments were interesting eg. Potato tartare made with new potato and peas and went well with the dishes. Do save room for some desserts! The ice cream was fab but the many desserts were equally as tempting. Over all, we had a pleasant evening and are very glad to have spent our last night in Dorset at The Crown. Hope to be back next visit.

Meal with friends. Food very good. I had veal as main which was excellent. Everyone else in the group also thought food eas great. Service could have been better, it wasn’t terrible, just a bit slow, perhaps some inexperienced waiting staff?

Working in te the industry I tend to keep to simple food when I go out on business trips, on this occasion I tried the restaurant’s fish dish of the day and have to say I was pleasantly surprised, that said however it would help to train the waiting staff in the art of service thus the 4 stars.

Set in a very convenient location to the town centre and close to a large (and cheap) car park 50 metres away, the beautiful and fast flowing river close by added to the atmosphere of the whole area. It would be great place to visit in spring/summer as the hotel itself has a brilliant outdoor seating area to boot. Inside it is very attractive with plenty of oak panelling. Although we didn't eat in the restaurant itself owing to the fact that a wedding party was due, we did manage to find a table for six in the large and busy bar area. Again plenty of attractive oak panelling with all sorts of bric a brac adourning the walls and shelves. The bar menu appeared to be the same as in the restaurant which is not unusual for this type of place. We all had different dishes, suffice it to say, all were of a high standard, as was both the bar and table service we received. I love a smile and a bit of banter as it just adds that extra dimension to the experience, particularly as all the staff were so busy. This was certainly one of the better hotels we have visited for lunch and as our family have just moved to the locallity, we will no doubt be visiting again. A big WELL DONE to both the bar and waiting staff (and chef of course) It is you that make these places tick.

Came here to celebrate my 60th birthday for Sunday lunch with my husband and sister. We did not stay in the Hotel but the building is lovely and well decorated in typical old English style. The Restaurant is the old Library and is lovely. We Booked a table inside but sat outside for our drinks as lovely sunny afternoon. The restaurant was fully booked and the bar and outside tables were all busy. We all choose the Sunday Roast, I had the Pork and the other 2 had Beef which was very soft. Good portions and all delicious. The only negative was that we waited nearly 1 hour for our food to arrive. When we asked the waitress she realised she had not pressed the 'Send' button when ordering our food so our food had not been ordered! However, we were served complimentary drinks as compensation and they were very pleasant and apologetic. I agree with alan b, they need to mark the tables outside with a clear number for better service in the garden. I would eat here again, just keep an eye on the service when busy.

Sunday roast was good ie.good selection of vegetables (blue cabbage and cauliflower were tasty, vegetables were not overcooked), generous portions of meat (I had beef which was a bit overcooked for me but it’s just me being a bit picky about beef. It was seasoned very well).Really enjoyed sticky toffee pudding. Good value for money - there was 2for1 deal for Sunday roast. Friendly and helpful service. Nice atmosphere and decor. Will definitely come back to check out the rest of the menu.

On our journey home from an overnight-stay in Bournemouth we decided to take a minor roads route back home rather than the direct main road route. This took us through quite a few small towns and villages. Our plan was to find a Farm Shop Café or a village / small town-centre café where we could get lunch: ideally a snack and a hot drink. We were over an hour into our journey when we saw the signs for Marcia’s Farm Shop and turned into what was a heavily pot-holed carpark. We then walked into the signposted barn noting that there was plenty of tables and chairs arranged in neat rows but no-one was sat there. There was another door into ‘The Shack’; inside was actually a full bar; like you would find in a pub. There were a few locals propping-up the bar, chatting and drinking draught beer. This is not what we had expected and we assumed that the ‘Marcia’s Farm Shop’ and ‘The Shack’ were one in the same business. There didn’t appear to be any farm produce on sale: other than, we assumed, the food offered in the menu. It was almost exactly 1pm when we were approached and welcomed by a pleasant lady. We asked about food, and she advised us to select a table and choose from the menu of snacks that were available, and that she would return to take our order. We studied the menu having ordered some tea and my Partner chose a fishfinger baguette, whereas I chose a toasted ham and cheese sourdough sandwich. The plates took a good 20-25 minutes to arrive from ordering, but freshly prepared food does take time. So, we sipped tea and amused ourselves with the help of a large (probably over-fed and under-exercised) old Labrador who constantly wandered and sniffed around the bar and seated areas. The dog then settled at our table once our food order arrived. This was not a serious issue for us (others however may dislike being ‘hounded’ by slobbering dogs while they eat their food). Both plates featured a colourful and tasty fresh dressed salad which was really good. My sandwich was really firm and crunchy with a generous helping of thick-cut ham and plenty of well-melted cheese, and a small portion of red cabbage coleslaw to go with the salad. It was really good and enjoyed. My Partner’s baguette featured homemade cod loin fishfingers and tartare sauce (both inside the baguette). The fish was a bit moist and insubstantial; despite being made from the loin. Cod can be like this and it is why we prefer the meatier haddock. The baguette also accompanied by a few crisps, but they were a really strange flavour for accompanying fish (reminded us of Oxo beef - but very artificial). Our food was on the whole good, generously portioned and very much welcomed, and it was good value.
