Nice little cosy pub. Beer garden quiet large party undercover .

The staff was very friendly and the food was great

Not good stale burger buns all round, all 3 of us had burgers and could not eat the buns, landlady blamed it on the brewery and gave us a discount, but would of preferred fresh buns

We've been to the |Crown and Cushion before and have always been pleased with the food. I booked this particular visit for a Saturday evening and the restaurant was very busy. However, the food and drinks arrived promptly, the service was very efficient and polite and our party were all very satisfied with the whole experience.

A last minute search on trip advisor made us discover this little gem. Would definitely return to the area just for the steak and ale pie. A must!!

Food was fine as usual - service though was awful. Were not offered the usual bread / olive dip to start that other tables got and have had before. Were not even offered dessert or menus for desert . Staff were generally sullen. Had to pay at bar as waited too long after i asked for bill. Worst of all when i was asked how was the meal when i paid i politely gave my opinion as above - the rather precocious girl with an attitude offered no apology and just said that they were very busy and did not have staff . I remarked that i had been there since 7 pm and the restaurant was mostly empty so did not get the ‘busy’ bit - she again ( no apology) just repeated they were busy and did not have staff. All she had to do was apologise and i would have felt slightly better about the whole experience. Not returning again

The Sunday meal was good. Potatoes needed to be crispier. The meat was good. The vegetables and gravy weren’t anything special. The cheeseboard was a lot of money for the portion I got 4 crackers. We had to say a number of times the sprite was not right. It was not as good as I was expecting which was a bit disappointing.

Service and pub excellent. Ordered roast beef which was very fatty. Asked for a replacement which was only slightly better. Everything else and rest of our groups meals and desserts were lovely .

Great food, especially the children’s menu which has much better choices than most. Our only dissatisfaction was with the blue cheese fritters on the Yorkshire platter which had no flavour. Otherwise, we were very happy and will return.

We are regular customers here and other venues in the chain We try to avoid Sundays because it is busy and can be noisy. The food is always good with a varied menu and the staff are always friendly and helpful. We are great supporters of the 'pass port' promotion .

We found that sitting just inside the front door, right next to the bar was not pleasant or conducive to a relaxed meal. What with customers coming and going through the room plus ALL the staff in and out of the bar and some of the staff "larking" about made it very noisy and "busy" - not a relaxed atmosphere at all. Will refuse to sit in this room in future - if nowhere else available I will drive to another restaraunt!

Lovely proper pub in a charming village with easy access to the grounds of Castle Howard. Food always good although we find it best to avoid Sunday lunch times as they are always very busy.

Hadn't been before so it was a bit of a gamble but nearest place to Castle Howard where we were attending an event. There were 6 of us and we all had different things but the blue cheese souffle was the favourite starter. Two of us had a special for mains which was called Hake with an Asian risotto which was very nice but nothing much Asian about it. It tasted more of saffron but nevertheless the fish was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. Portion sizes were very good, just right for the men, a bit too much for the ladies but we tried to finish as much as we could. Service was good, attentive, and there when we needed more drinks etc. Overall a very nice meal in nice surroundings (inside). We would return and recommend to others.

We had a lovely family lunch at the Crown & Cushion - the food was delicious and very good value. We ate from the lunch menu which was well priced but still had a good choice. We'll definitely go again!!

Very pleasant Saturday lunch, good menu choice and food very tasty. Waiting staff very polite and attentive.

One problem was the size of the table and also the closeness to the next table. The menu was average and my lobster bisque was only a small spoon of lobster cream making the dish very dry and I was not told that my fish would be whole, ie full of bones. My wife’s food was ok.

Really like this place for many reasons. Beautiful surroundings, warm welcome, tasty and well presented meals are some examples of why. Will most certainly be returning and have in fact a table booked for a forthcoming celebration. Looking forward very much to that.

I think your experience of this eatery depends on your menu choice. My partner thought their meal choice was excellent, well presented and tasted good. My burger however, was cold, with two small dry over cooked 'beef patties', with unmelted cheese - very basic burger I would not call inspiring, or exciting. I would call again, but next time go for the cheaper element of the menu, not the a le cart!!

Not the cheapest drink in town but a proper drinkers pub. No jukebox, no TVs, large outdoor covered area for smokers patio heaters. Great choice for real ales.

Good value as always. Very good range of food choices including vegetarian options. Never disappointed here.

Great pub and lovely atmosphere

We enjoyed a very good meal on Thuirsday 23rd. May 2019. The only disappointment was, I thought when I booked the table it would be in the restaurant and not the bar. Very good service and exceptional food. The noise lever was perfect except for a table of four enthusiastic grandparents sharing videos etc., on their telephones, a little off putting but I know this wasn't your fault. Probably it would be a good idea to ban mobile telephones when people are trying to enjoy a meal.

The night we visited was "steak night" at The Crown & Cushion", which we chose, steak was excellent, cooked to order, and served very promptly. The staff at the pub were really friendly and courteous. A great pub, great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this as a place to enjoy a meal.

Great food , friendly staff and a great location. Trip of Rhubarb a la Yorkshire recommended! Will be back!

Lovely meal, very tasty. Service was good. Harissa Chicken would be my choice next time although the burger was very filling.

This used to be such a lovely place to eat but I have found that in the last year or so the place is starting to look a bit tired. Cobwebs, dust, broken lighting, sticky tables. Attention to detail is lacking. Staff miserable looking. Waiter untidy and smelled of tobacco smoke. The food was alright but it used to be so much better. Such a shame.

Lovely food and staff. Leisurely meal in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

We were a party of four and three of us enjoyed the food. Sadly my husband had the fish and chips and was disappointed. He said the fish wasn’t very good and the batter was overcooked. We hope it was just a one off because everything else was enjoyable.

Very pleasant experience. Had a small wait for out main, however was given a free pint for compensation 👍

7 diners, no complaints, 7 empty plates all three courses,says it all.

Pie and chips was £15.00 per person. A small pie. Good pastry, dry filling. A small pile of fried sliced potatoes (not chunky chips as advertised), a boat of bisto gravy and a pile of gritty carrots, yes that was the only veg on the plate. A fairer price might have been around £9. Felt completely ripped off, but couldn't complain at the time as i didnt want to spoil the evening.

Our meal was ok but not as good as on previous visits. The cauliflower in cheese sauce had become mush and the pork was rather fatty.

We love this pub normally to go for a couple of drinks but decided to take Mum and Dad for a meal which was really good.

Sunday lunch. <br />We had a super meal on 24 March. The food was delicious, the service smashing and the whole experience lovely. <br />We suddenly became a party of 4 and it was no trouble for them to accommodate us. The menu was great with plenty of choice - we all had trouble making our selections and said we would be back to try the rest!

Lunch was lovely excellent service and salad will definitely be back, far superior than any offerings in York city centre. Beautiful scenery too

Many visits to this lovely restaurant however, new staff and slow service. Order was wrong and unable to solve the small things, like asking for water to the table. The sauce for the chicken [rotisserie chicken Tuesday] was SO salty! The presentation was good however, no knife was provided to actually cut the chicken lol Found its hard to cut chicken with a dinner knife :-)<br />Will not go to this night for a while, hoping that they can perfect like they do their steak nights :-)

We visited two years ago on a recommendation and liked it so much we came back the next time we were in the area - was just as enjoyable.

We have been going to the Crown &amp; Cushion for a while now, but have noticed a big difference over the last few months. Our last meal was very disappointing. In particular an expensive prawn cocktail arrived in a very strange dish/glass which was full of lettuce, a few tiny flavourless prawns and no sauce! The last three times we have been they have also run out of one of the dishes we have tried to order. We were supposed to be going again this weekend for Sunday lunch, and taking some friends. Sadly I am cancelling the reservation as we no longer feel the Crown &amp; Cushion provides the quality and standard of food it used to.

Another excellent lunch with friends. We will be back.

It was a lovely meal, however, this was the first time I used Open table to book and when I arrived the waiter claimed he did not have my booking which I could see was on his screen. Overall, a lovely meal just slightly poor service.

Lovely pub excellent service and the best fish n chips I have had in years!! Definitely recommend highly.

Disappointed that they had run out of roast meals but we still ate well and our waiter was brilliant- could not fault him for the service he provided to our table.

Disappointing- has gone downhill drastically since our last visit!

Pub was very busy and the poor waiting staff were very stressed - as there were simply not enough of them. In a Yorkshire pub, at these premium prices, I&#039;d expect both quality and quantity. I got neither. My chicken breast could well have been a budgerigar, and I waited expectantly for a side plate of vegetables, which never arrived. The meat tasted very ordinary and came on a bed of a few sliced potatoes and greens. My colleague&#039;s monk fish portion was tiny, and without the extra portion of chips ordered, we would have left hungry. A second drink we ordered spent around fifteen minutes waiting on the bar to be brought over, and we left without ordering any dessert. The place was packed out and has a great reputation, so I doubt if this revue will be of any consequence, but I would certainly not go there again.

Great food and service yet again, but the lady behind the bar let&#039;s the place down, she had no customer relation skills at all.<br />On arrival we waited at the bar whilst she carried on washing glasses, a friendly &quot;Hi I wont be a moment&quot; would be the way rather than totally ignoring.<br />On leaving we all wished her good night, no response whatsoever.<br />She was also very late sorting our first drinks, much to the annoyance of the waiter.<br />Talking to some of the locals at the bar, they were fed up with her total incompetence, always waiting to be served whilst she fussed about looking busy, but doing very little.<br />She really does let this great establishment down.

After booking ahead we were initially seated between the bar and the fire, which was not ideal. We asked to move and were then seated at a better table, which, incidentally, we had been shown past on the way in! <br />What food we had was excellent although they forgot to serve our shared stater, for which we were compensated.<br />On balance, an enjoyable evening and we would visit again.

A great Wednesday steak night with all the trimmings and a bottle of house red wine too; can&#039;t beat it! Cooked to perfection, well done chefs, and served by hospitable and welcoming staff. Well done Team Crown &amp; Cushion. We will be back!

Pleasant pub with cosy atmosphere. There wasn&#039;t much variety with the menu but the food we had was well cooked and presented; but maybe the portions could have been a little bigger. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Food was good, wine was excellent.<br />Just spoiled a tad by the loud, disingenuous woman behind the bar.

We were ignored as we entered. Bar staff didn’t acknowledge our presence. <br />The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday night but perhaps dry January was having an impact?<br />One server was friendly and helpful the other was stern and brash like a head teacher. <br />Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Prices were expensive but the quality of food reflected the price. <br />The chefs were visibly in the front of house asking to close the kitchen and go home. Slightly unprofessional in front of guests. <br />The restaurant was homely and warm with log fires and a choice of attractive dining spaces.

This is the second time we’ve been, it’s been faultless each time. <br />Fantastic staff and accommodating kitchen to my dietary requirements. <br />Excellent food. <br />We say next to the fire, perfect cosy date night (which is rare with a toddler, so you want it to be great!) <br />We can’t wait to return.
