Staff welcoming. Portions sizes are good. Main courses were tasty. Dessert was a disappointment for me the Gooseberry crumble was burnt and inedible. Prices differ from the menu, the receipt and online. Check this before paying. Floors are very greasy and ladies toilet flush broken. However we still had a pleasant evening and came away full and reasonably happy.

Great old pub, very friendly staff. Indian restaurant very clean, with excellent food and very friendly staff. The restaurant was very busy as Saturday night and not all had booked. Pointed out as soon as we sat down that there would be a wait between courses but we were in no hurry and the food was worth waiting for. Try the Captain Jamal highly recommend by my partner.

On a course nearby and this was the closest restaurant. What a delight to find not only an Indian restaurant in a village pub but one that did very good food. My colleagues and myself regularly eat in Indian restaurants and the Pathia in the Crown was on par with some of the best I've had. Service was excellent and it also has the benefit of some very good local beers being available from the pub bar.

My partner & I had arrived at our nearby camp later in the evening and were looking for somewhere still serving food at 9pm. The friendly staff at The Crown told us to come and very kindly kept the kitchen open for just the two of us, and we’re so glad they did!Being quite the Indian food connoisseur’s we can confidently say the food here is some of the best we’ve ever tasted! The chef is from Bangladesh and cooked us delicious food, even though I’m sure he would have liked to close the kitchen earlier that night.Great food & great service in a historic pub with quirky decor

Stayed close by so very convenient - not quite as attractive looking pub from the outside as it appears on the website - restaurant itself quite small, but luckily we were the only people in there, the lady who served us was really friendly. There was plenty of choice on the menu - nicest naan bread I’ve ever had, fresh & not like supermarket stodge! Think we over-ordered a bit as had a bit of a shock when the bill came (including drinks). Only downside I would say was the constant waft of cigarette smoke, which was a shame.

I came here on recommendation. I was very disappointed. On arrival, we could not enter through the main door. Once we did get in, Was meet with a pungent smell of dog urine. On my way to the toilet, noticed a puddle in the lounge area. On further inspection seen there was a leak. I notified the bar staff(as I see this a safety issue) she then shouted a man. Who then stormed pass swearing and crumbling under his breath. I went out into the "courtyard"for a cigarette to be greeted by more than one bit of dog mess, and the kitchen staff smoking. At that point we decided to drink and leave.

We booked a table to experience the Indian cuisine and it was a very good find! We were delighted that our dog was welcome. Whilst there were several locals at the bar enjoying each others company, the staff quickly showed us to a table they had prepared for us in a nice alcove. We had lovely meals which were nicely presented and spiced as well as being well priced. The staff were very friendly and made a nice fuss of our dog. I find you can tell a good Indian by the quality of the nan bread, unfortunately not good here, but the curry itself was good. There were a few issues which could easily be addressed. Two sets of music coming out of different speakers, most irritating. Doombar beer was served cloudy. Decor was cafe style and needed some thought. Felt the restaurant was an after thought to the pub. This place may not have the best decor, but who cares when you, and even more so, your dog, gets a warm welcome, and yourself a fantastic meal. I've never been to such a dog friendly restaurant, where locals come in for their pint and are allowed their dogs to wander round. The staff are so friendly and the food is good. My only gripe would be is that a bit more meat could be presant in their dishes. More places like this are needed, where you can go for a good meal and take your pet and have a relaxing time without prejudice that you are bringing the dog.

Easily by far the nicest Indian food I have ever eaten. The chicken was fantastic, flavours were great and all very reasonable. The Indian restaurant is unique as it's all part of an old local pub, with a very friendly atmosphere. The bar staff kept checking on us all evening if we were ok for drinks, and the lovely man serving the Indian food was the nicest person too! Valentines evening - they had made a real effort with balloons & candles & a set menu for 2 for 30 pounds. In fact we both fancied more expensive dishes and enjoyed those. Imagine our surprise when they included the dishes in the set menu saving us money and then presented my wife with a red rose and a bottle of prosecco at the end of the meal - which was excellent. I left a tip as I was worried they would not make a profit - what more can you say.

We recently ate here on two evenings whilst staying at the fabulous B&B next door. It is very much a local pub (500 years old) with lots of character, cask ales and of course, in Herefordshire, local cider. We found the staff friendly and helpful, and though clearly a 'local' pub we didn't find the unfriendliness sometimes found from 'regulars' in a pub. The food from the Indian restaurant area within the pub was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced served by friendly Abdul who also kindly gave us a free chai. What more could you ask for, character, history and lovely Indian food with good English ale or cider to wash it down? Combined with the great B&B next door The Crown made a great two night break complete.

Popped in for a quick drink as we were staying locally. Looked quaint from the outside. However, as a non indian food fan - the smell was a bit over powering in the inside bar area. Pub is very pocky but does have a pool table and dart table. Sadly to even pop outside to enjoy your drink, you have to run the smokers alley gauntlet. They are onbviously locals and don't even move unless you almost push past something the owner could help prevent happening by changing seating plan. It had such promise as a local for the week.

I brought my dog in, yes I admit it I shouldn't of done, in a small environment, I scolded her and put her in the car, after I was approached, by a man, who told me he would of thrown my dog through the window, she only barked, at the other dog, when the other dog came to her, no big deal, I sat there thinking how hard he must be feeling, I told the Indian restaurant I will never go there again, they called the landlady, she then agreed that throwing my dog out the window, was OK, and when asked the local drinker he denied it, its up to you whether you attend this pub, but believe me, they are coarse, fouled mouthed, if you are happy with that kind of behaviour, good luck, they are nothing but bullies, in my world what goes round comes round, please do not believe and get sucked in by the last review

Went here for a one night stay with my friend but as soon as you walked into the bar, it stunk of cigarette smoke and looked grubby. Used the one and only public toilet which was covered in thick layer of dust, dirty and the door lock didn't work!We were shown to our twin room which was a decent size but the rest was shocking :-My bed looked as though it had been slept in for a month, the bottom sheet was creased, grubby with bits of what looked like biscuit crumbs. The pillow cases were just as creased and bad and obviously hadn't been changed for heaven knows how long. None of the bed linen matched and the pillows were flat & just as awful.Went to the airing cupboard & got "fresh ones" which were only slightly better. The set of drawers had drawers that wouldn't stay shut and stayed fully open. The unit itself was dirty and thick in dust, there was a dish with coffee in it that was stuck together and looked disgusting, there was no other available in the room. The state of the decor was totally unacceptable with paper trim hanging off, torn and so many cobwebs, some with dead flies in and a huge spider on the ceiling. The dado rail behind the beds was filthy and covered in a thick layer of dust. The bathroom carpet hadn't been hoovered in weeks, the shower enclosure was dirty/stained and the window sill, covered in dust and grime. The 'Continental Breakfast' was an absolute disgrace not to mention there wasn't anywhere to eat it but on your lap in the bedroom. No milk or fruit juice in the fridge, no coffee, no fresh fruit, 2 small boxes of cereals, no selection of pastries and no plates only dishes. The whole experience of our stay was the worst ever and for a staggering £75.00 per night made it even more unbelievable that such dreadful conditions and food are being offered to guests !!!!!!!!!

Stayed in Lea for a few days over the bank holiday, and before travelling checked out the reviews for the Crown and was looking forward to spending a few nights in the bar and trying out the beer and food. Unfortunately it was not to be.Upon entering the pub I was taken back a decade by the rank smell of cigarettes that wafted across the bar. Not to be perturbed I went to the bar an ordered a round. The bar maid was curt but not unfriendly, however I could almost hear the banjos start up in the background. Most of my group headed outside, as we had a young child with us. However upon following I realised that to get to the back yard you had to pass through a group of locals standing around a smoking table who were well oiled (at about 5 on a Monday). None of them friendly and I even heard the word 'tourist' muttered by one of them as I squeezed past.As for the back yard, other than the smoking crew it contained a few tables, some building rubble, wheelbarrow, an old broken toilet, a fair amount of broken glass and what I hope was dog excrement. We drank quickly, left, and noticed a lawned section on the right with two overturned gas heaters, which might have been mildly safer than the rubble and glass but not much.I'll never return and would recommend giving the place a wide berth. A shame as it could be such a lovely place.

I was working in Gloucester & wanted to stay a little further out - in commuter territory so as to explore the local countryside and to plan a possible relocation to the area due to circumstances. The Crown was/is a perfect location, 25/30 minutes max from the the Quays, 20/30 minutes from the NDAC (diving is a hobby) & 5 minutes from the Wye Valley & forest. What a fabulous place to stay!Tremendous history (it is listed) and significant original architecture remains untouched. The resultant character is superb - complimented by a welcoming fire in the centre of the pub which provides a haven for all.In many respects, it was like travelling back in time and enjoying all of the very best that we remember from our early years. The boss, Di runs an extremely friendly, clean and really, really great establishment. She clearly understands the balance between local community and passing trade. The perfect landlady & a wonderful person! All staff are a credit to the Crown - Mark is an ace - and the locals are welcoming to a fault. Even, the local action group - formed to protect the heritage of the community - are engaging and very welcoming.Rooms are clean, comfortable and relaxing. From the moment my partner and I arrived to check in we were made to feel very welcome, the room was spotless, warm and the bed was comfy, facilities were excellent, the food was all home cooked and there was lots of it and it was always piping hot, we also had the carvery on Sunday lunch, there was 4 meats, 12 veg,- honest- and 2 gravies, nothing was too much trouble for the staff and Di was the sort of host you dream of. All in all an excellent stay, will definitely go back.

We tried this pub out for the first time. I've driven past loads of times but this time we decided to have a drink and ended up eating. A delight as a traditional pub with character that is cosy and interesting with hundred of years of history. The staff and locals could not have been more friendly and welcoming and the range and variety of food on offer was what decided us to eat. Some unusual variations on traditional pub grub (I had gammon steak with treacle coating) and an enticing carvery (long time since I've seen that in a real pub). To say the portions were generous is an understatement and you could find yourself unable to try the desserts which looked very appealing. We had to pass on those for that reason. Beer and wine good and the value was extremely good - it didn't affect us but the vegetarian choice was varied and enticing plus wasn't priced at silly levels like many places - it seemed to be lower than meaty things which seems fair to me. Will definitely return and may try the Sunday lunch sometime, perhaps after avoiding food for a few days before to ensure I can eat it all and do it justice (plus just maybe manage a dessert).A delight - thank you.

The Crown was almost next door to the cottage we were staying in and 5 of us went in there for Sunday lunch. The landlady, staff and customers were immediately friendly and chatty and the pub is a normal, ordinary pub, not like the sanitised, decor, franchised, menu and drinks of most pubs these days. Lunch was a magnificent carvery, with 4 choices of meat, every vegetable you could think of and superb roast potateos. You could eat as much as you wanted and I had one of the biggest and best Sunday lunches I have ever had. I couldn't move for hours ! Drinks were well priced as well and the whole meal was great value. We ate in there on another evening and it was just as good and the kids loved the pool/darts room. thoroughly recommended if you like real friendly pubs.

We having been coming to the crown for a while now and the food have always been very good. The staff are always so friendly and helpful. But I must say they have excelled themselves since they have started their Carvery. It has a fantastic choice of veg and meats. (The Yorkshire pubs are to die for) Also caterers well for Veggies. The food is piping hot t and very fresh. The sweets look great too. We always bring our little dog, and he is made to feel very welcome. Well worth a visit you will not be disappointed in any way.

Ate here on our first night staying at the Orchard cottage and enjoyed a truly great (one of the best) carvery, (only served Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunchtime), all 7 of us including 4 kids left very satisfied and wanted to come back. We ate here again on our last night and again the food was excellent as was the atmosphere and bill. The steaks and fish are recommended, the San Miguel is to be taken with care, easy walk home tho! This pub had a mixture of locals and visitors, we were made to feel very welcome and always enjoyed our visits with all the staff being helpful and polite. I'm sure some people would not like the atmosphere as this is not a 5 star hotel restaurant serving suppers, it is what is it, a great family and pet friendly village pub.

Not in many years have we arrived at a Pub for a meal.. There were 5 of us.. We firstly battled to get to the door as the steps at the car park entrance were full of men smoking and spilling larger on the steps.. On entering the pub.. NOT one person acknowledged us.. There was food left over from lunch on a Buffett covered partially with cling film. After a 5 min wait and no one coming to seat us.. We headed back to the door to leave and got acknowledged with an "alright"..... From a young lad behind the bar.. This is a unkept.. Not clean pub who will never see me darken there door again...Customer care is so important, something they could clearly learn a lot about..

Staying at an adjacent cottage for a week; we thought we'd try the local on our first evening. This is definitely a locals pub and not really geared up for visitors. We did not visit again after this first visit. Dogs are welcome and the pub dog is friendly. Shame the beer is Greene King and no variation. Had the new carvery for £7.95. The carvery runs from Friday to Sunday and without an excess of gravy the meat was very dry as were the stuffing balls and Yorkshire pudding. Nice enough though and generous with 4 large slices of meat..

I called in here to try out the new carvery on 4th July 2014 as there is an introductory offer running for two or three weeks at the price of just £4.95 per head. Now at that price you would think that the portions would be small or cheap ingredients were being used,Believe me that is not so.The portions are HUGE! fresh and tasty.I was served at the carvery by the landlady a very bubbly buxom person who has obviously never heard of the term portion control as i actually had to ask her to stop putting meat on my plate. There was a selection of eight or ten veg, i could not fit it all on my plate but every veg i tried was cooked to perfection. So if you are in the area have the appetite of a lion and like good home cooking at its best give the Crown inn a try,you will not find better value for money anywhere.

Good choice of food, Fine dining it is not, but if you want well presented, well cooked and fresh Pub food, this is the place for you. Portions were superb and the steaks were very tasty. The lads that served us were lovely, nothing was too much trouble. My only very slight criticism was the dog who was very friendly kept visiting us when we were eating, although they kept calling him back , he's not daft and at one point rested his head on our table! Luckily we are dog lovers but some people wouldn't like it. But all said and done I would go here again.

First class service and tasty fresh food but portions do not merit the menu prices. Lovely pub and a good selection of beers, wine and non alcoholic beverages.

Popped along for a quick bite one evening whilst staying nearby, having checked our 2 dogs would be welcome - they were :-) Lovely atmosphere as walked in; cosy, warm & inviting. WIth dogs nicely settled under the table we had a good menu choice with specials available. I chose local ham & eggs served with a salad & side of chips to share amongst us. Really tasty! Gammon, Hunters Chicken & Sausage n Mash equally enjoyed within our group. Service was friendly & efficient, just as well as we arrived hungry! Puddings looked superb but we were fully satisfied so called it a night. Good find & excellent value for money.

We recently stayed (family of mum, dad, son and daughter of 8 & 2) in a cottage up the road from the Crown and slightly worried about heading in due to external appearance however liking a beer we did and so pleased we did. A great local pub with local characters and the staff were nothing but overly welcoming. Cas, who runs the bar, was the most welcoming bar man I have experienced with strangers in a distant location, exactly what a pub shoul be.The pub inside is absolutely georgeous and we were there for Halloween for which they had made a real effort with spooky decorations which was brilliant with the kids.We had a few meals there and I must say it was all incredibly nice and freshly made and the ribs on a Thursday are the bet I have tasted in a long time.If you can accept a local pub for what it should be and be friendly to staff as opposed to expecting to be served upon then you will love it. Be friendly and that is what you get back.Oh and don't be put off by the exterior, the joy is finding these places and taking part.

Having pre-booked a table for 5 for Sunday lunch was surprised on arrival that none had been reserved. There were no Sunday Lunch menus either. Was informed by staff what was available & told to order at the bar. The whole pub is a mish-mash of furniture & a vast amount of ornaments & other tat. There seemed to be dust & cobwebs in certain areas. We also had a couple of dogs & a cat in the eating area, although they gave us no cause for concern. I then had to search the bar for beer mats to put under the leg of the table to stop it rocking every time one of us touched it. The area was also cold & some of our party kept their coats on. The food arrived & it was immediately obvious most was not fresh or poorly prepared. Mash had lumps, roast potatoes probably out of a bag & not nice. Some veg was ok. All but one left some of this course. We asked for the sweet menu & was pointed to chalk board on wall. We all ordered eventually. When they were served the choc/mint ice cream was that hard it was difficult to attempt to eat. The sticky toffee pudding was reasonable but the "Chefs rhubarb crumble" was inedible. If that was ever crumble I'll eat my hat. One of our party was told that the lemon meringue ordered had run out so went without. On paying the bill when leaving I complained about the food, especially the crumble. This item was not charged for. My other concern is as there was no menu or receipt given, we were unable to check prices or whether what we paid was correct.I don't know if the people running this pub are new to the business but they have a long way to go & need to vastly improve the quality of their food & the "ambienced" of the place.

We stayed here for 3 nights in early Sept. A welcome that many 4 star hotels could learn from. The food is not smart in terms of gastro, but is of very good quality, the steak and kidney pud, ah! and loved the imaginative use of yorkshire puddings. Warning, do not have the full English breakfast, whilst excellent, you will not feel like walking for some time after!Good beer and welcoming atmosphere in the bar. Rooms were fine, this is a pub not a 5*, clean and well provisioned. We will certainly go again and recommend to friends. Lovely, sheltered garden. Don't throw things for the dog because he will wear you out!

Living in the south - in the home counties - I am subject to astronomically priced gastro pubs or boil in a bag chains. The crown is neither. Dog friendly and a warm welcome from staff and locals- this is a well priced pub with a proper english cook. Fab steak and kidney pud and a great bread and butter pudding which will rival most mums (mine is better - but hey - I make a grade 10 bread and butter pudding - this scores a 9) Would rate the steak and kidney pud at 10 out of 10. My pet hate is eating boil in a bag frozen food - and you do not get this here...fresh veg - proper mash - real gravy and proper homemade (by the cook) food at a very good price. If you want posh and pretentious, go somewhere else - if you want a warm welcome and a decent meal - drop in here when you're passing on the A40.

With generous portions and attentive staff, the Crown is a great place for a meal. The menu has so many yummy things to choose from, we found it hard to decide, but once we had chosen, we were served in good time, and the food was excellent.

We stayed for one night early July. The room was clean but shabby. Bedside lights did not work. Handle fell off the wardrobe door. The window would not open. The room smelled of smoke. The evening meal taken in the restaurant was adequate and reasonably priced. The cooked breakfast was poor. The ingredients did not seem fresh. The attitude of the staff was very pleasant and helpful but this did not make up for the overall experience.

Having noticed new signs and decorations at The Crown we decided to try it for lunch, what a mistake, we nearly walked straight back out and with hindsight wished we had. The inside decor was very shoddy, we felt as if we were sitting in an old peoples home and it all felt a bit grubby. It was badly finished with patches of plaster missing from the walls and pink 1970's bathroom tiles used on the floor to fill the gap of missing flagstones. I guess they were going for the vintage look, but with an abundance of sticky plastic lace table cloths and charity shop nick-naks it was more tacky than retro. We were greeted by 'all the staff out the back having a fag', with the smell of smoke wafting through the open back door into the bar. We were handed an illegible sandwich menu, made our choices and paid, only to be told ten minutes later that they didn't have either item ordered. When the meals arrived, they were OK, nice warm par baked rolls obviously freshly cooked, although the cutlery and plates looked like they needed a good wash! We ate up and left as fast as we could.

Just returned from a three day stay at The Crown with friends. We were very impressed with the friendliness and welcome we received. Bedrooms were immaculate and beds very comfortable. My husband and I did not have an en-suite in our room but did have our own personal bathroom adjacent to our room. Food was good and breakfast excellent. Certainly set us up for the day!We will certainly be returning in the near future.Moya S.

We were staying on the Malvern View Country and Leisure Park for a weekend stay which we could not fault. However, we dined at The Old Barnhouse on the Saturday evening and unfortunately the food was terrible. We waited for nearly an hour and when the food arrived it was half cold. My mother and father had scampi and chips, no peas and they were out of tartare sauce! My sister and I had the New Yorker chicken which consisted of a huge portion of coleslaw that wasn’t very nice and the chicken was small and if poor quality. My daughter had a kids pizza, chips and beans which was just about acceptable. The five meals and a round of drinks came to over £80 which was appalling for the quality of the food. Avoid The Old Barnhouse for food! Pleasant enough for a drink.

Rude, extremely disappointing, shocking and disrespectful staff! We arrived after making a booking the day before. I booked 2 Adults, 1 child aged 2. The booking itself was pleasant. We got slightly lost, rang in and again very pleasant. Arrived 7 minutes late and walked into a very ‘local’ pub feel. All eyes on us. We were told by the bar person that they were glad we found them. A woman appeared and looked at my Grandson and commented ‘we don’t have highchairs’ I commented that I’d booked ahead with a child on the booking? She said she would go down in the cellar and dust something suitable to bring up then asked me if I had a chair in my car???!!!! We approached the bar and I said I was confused as I’d booked a child ahead of coming. I was ignored, I said once again and the younger woman behind the bar looked at me and in a slightly raised voice utttered ‘well, yes she’s gone to get you something hasn’t she!!’ Based on this experience I told my Friend we were leaving as being treated like this was way beyond acceptable. I wasn’t happy and I let it be known! My Friend and I were left shocked and felt we had been treated appallingly by 2 extremely rude women. Whilst we were putting my Grandson in the car the older women came out and further patronised us with her offering of a dusted off cellar chair and we told her that her colleague was vile and it had gone beyond the chair. She walked off. Having read through the reviews I can see hands have changed and so this may be why I didn’t receive the reputation I had heard of. I have the feeling they felt they were above us! I’m not easily impressed so their Morgan cars and gold large Baroque chairs only further deepens my suspicions that they think they’re better 🤣🤣
