The Crown at Newick in Lewes

The Crown is one of our locals but this was our first visit since they have been serving Thai food. Amazing. The Thai food is incredible, the food serving staff are terrific and it’s not bad value - the trick is not to over order as everything looks so good. The bar staff were very friendly and it’s a great pub. One small negative, it’s a relatively small pub and next to us was a table of twelve ladies. We had to move tables as we could not chat over the noise. The staff were fine with that, problem solved. Well worth a visit.

Lunchtime was very quite so hard to comment on the atmosphere, but the food was exceptional, great value and great flavours along with ample portions sizes.

Stunning authentic Thai food and lovely garden!

We got an excellent Thai takeaway this evening. Food was very hot, with generous portions, the flavors were really tasty, very on par with other Thai restaurants in England, if not better. We will be back!

Stopped in for a late pint. We were served promptly and only gently encouraged to leave at closing time.

Never visited before, but wish we had. Reduced menu for lunchtime around £13.50 starter and main course. Really good Thai food freshly cooked. Great selection of beers and good service. The Thai chef brought it out for us.. We will shortly be returning in the evening for the full à la cart menu.. Well worth trying.

This is the third time we have enjoyed a fantastic Thai meal at The Crown. Two course lunch menu, freshly cooked to order and as good as any Thai restaurant we have ever eaten at. Beautifully presented and excellent value for money. As well as a traditional English pub interior, the Crown also has a spacious, comfortable and well maintained outside seating area. Plenty of tables and two comfy sofa arrangements plus excellent play area for children. We will definitely be returning!

So great to have this in the village. New Thai kitchen menu is fantastic. Not bucket level cheap stuff. But shared a starter, 2 mains and a generous rice with 2 glasses of wine for £50. All of it superb. Can eat in the south facing garden on a warm summers evening. Very dog friendly as well. Biscuits and water in plentiful supply. Will definitely entice us to eat out on more than a special occasion.

New Thai menu is great. Obviously cooked fresh and not generic Chinese wholesale fair so often presented. Their own style and easily matches Lewes Thai restaurants, (but better beer)!

Thank you so much for an amazing take away meal which we had for my mother’s birthday. The staff at the Crown were brilliant and arranged for all food for 10 people to be ready for collection at a set time. The Elephant Kitchen Thai food was excellent and very tasty. The meal was enjoyed by all and I can recommend it to all. Thank you very much for a great experience.

Nice garden including a play area, friendly service. To note, they weren't serving food on a Saturday lunchtime although it says online they do, so perhaps worth calling to check in advance if you want food.

Decided to stop in for a drink and ended up getting pizzas (which were the best I’ve had in a long time). Ended up staying for the evening, very friendly staff and service was brilliant. Will be back again

Fantastic pub !! There are a couple of other pubs in the village, but I personally would swerve them and head straight for the Crown. I only wish there were more village pubs like this, they’re becoming hard to find . If you like an ale try the Long man 🍺

Lovely pub with a lovely garden.

Went here as part of the CAMRA Ale trail with the kids. As a Harvey’s associated pub it’s not surprising the Best Bitter is very good. In fact I would go as far to say it was one of the best pulled pints of Best I’ve had outside of Lewes. The garden is big and has an excellent wooden climbing frame with slide and swings for the kids. We didn’t eat there but will definitely return and sample the menu. The service and clientele were friendly and welcoming. All round great pub

Brilliant place for a large group…. We were 23 for lunch and we all had hot delicious pizza which arrived at the same time! No mean feat! Lovely friendly staff too, sat in the pretty garden and had a lovely afternoon.

Amazing! The service and feel of the place was extremely comfortable. The food? ABSOLUTELY SMASHING! The pizzas were actually perfect! Beautifully cooked, stone baked, Italian style! Chefs kiss!!

Great Harvey's pub with a fantastic outside area.

Lovely place caters for all ages and welcomes your dogs too. Great vast outdoor space with a large area of covered roof if required. The pizza's are very popular.

Visited the Crown by chance after a afternoon at Shefield Park. What a wonderful traditional English pub. A rare gem in a world of Croydon bland wine bars. The staff were realy friendly, the choice of beers exceptional and the food first class and reasonably priced,add to that a real fire and wonderful traditional furniture , makes the Crown the perfect place to relaxe. The locals were friendly and the pub was busy a good sign that this is a great place to visit.

Excellent under cover area outside with heaters and a large screen for sport.

Basic tapas meal - but tasty and inexpensive. Quiet as there were hardly any other people there. Service friendly and quite efficient.

Food was amazing, real fired pizzas that were cooked perfectly. Great outdoor dining space and large garden great for kids.

Great communication before visit, all pizza's and pasta came out to the plan, and tasted amazing, really enjoyed the venue, the beer, and the staff did a great job dealing with a big group.

As lovely as the first visit. Full of character. The huge garden at the back is beautiful with large outdoor sofas which you sink into. There's a bar in it too. Absolutely lovely. Wheelchair accessible at side of the building from the car park at the front. According to my companion they also have an impressive range of cask ales. Already looking forward to my next visit.

Excellent new (to us snyway!) outside eating area with heaters and tasty pizzas. Felt very continental 🙂 Minor gripe is that staff could be a little more attentive. We had to call someone over to order more drinks and when we did they asked if we wanted the bill, not good for business to encourage people to leave!

6 famillies descended on The Crown Saturday afternoon - the staff were so accommodating- they were very helfpul, friendly and efficient. PIzza's and icecream were great!

The beer garden has had an amazing refurb during lockdown, with a new roof and outdoor heating. They've just started doing pizzas which are delicious. Thin and crispy with tasty toppings, couldn't fault them. The staff are lovely, friendly, efficient and professional. Best local ever!!

Came to the Crown a few weeks ago on my Father's birthday. He had never tried Tapas and it was great to be able to introduce him to it here. Food was wonderful as was the beer, and the staff were great. Easily the best pub in Newick and we'll definitely be back.

Great place to eat and very welcoming!

We were camping nearby at Wowo in the high 30's heatwave early August and needed some respite from the brutal heat which was relentless at the camp site. Chose the Crown for a local Saturday pub lunch - gagging for a cold beer! They'd not long reopened post lockdown and were a bit tetchy about moving tables slightly or indeed parasols to get some shade (even though no one else was there). However I can understand where they were coming from. They were also a little precious about handing out menus as well, maybe due to covid? However the food was great! I had the ribs, wife had tapas and the kids meals were excellent portion sizes. Everyone enjoyed their lunch although there was a mix up with our friend's order so theirs got delivered late. The Crown also has a decent sized playground at the back which is always an appreciated distraction for the kids! All in all would definitely recommend

The Crown in Newick is a very friendly pub. It was clear that it is a good all round pub. Plenty of locals in the venue, all clearly following the pubs very clear social distancing guidelines. There was a large outdoor area and it was all laid out very well. They had an indoor and an outdoor bar and even had Cruz Campo on tap (An excellent Spanish beer)! The bar staff welcomed us with great warmth and they were very knowledgeable about their extensive gin menu. The food was also lovely, it was well priced, not a gastro pub affair, but very good locally sourced (I asked) produce. It was clear that this is very much a community pub. I would recommend it and will be going back.

Our evening was spoilt by really noisy guests. Staff did not ask them to consider other guests and so we left early. Food we did have was fine but we will not return.

A village pub serving lovely food. Good range of food, large portions and friendly staff. Amazing cheesy garlic bread. Bit noisy when we were there as football was on as the dining area is close to the telly but otherwise, a good atmosphere.

Full of people eating and drinking, what more does it need to be

We have often visited this friendly family run pub for a drink, they always have an interesting local draught cider and local wine and beer. Occasionally we eat the good pub classics at lunchtime there, on our last visit we took our young grandchild as it’s the only pub in the village which has a garden – there’s a climbing frame and swings beyond the courtyard at the back. They were also able to produce a plastic cup and straw for our grandchild’s juice.Their burgers are good but on this occasion I had a dressed crab with chips and salad for only £12 (I paid double that in Brighton recently) and we also had scampi, peas & chips and a child’s meal, all came quickly and were very good value. All three pubs in Newick are near glamping sites and sometimes get large parties of families so I would recommend booking during the school holidays. Not open for food on Mon & Tues, they have a website but there are no menus on there so take pot luck.

We have been for lunch a few times now and the food is consistently good, freshly cooked and tasty pub fare. Lovely country inn with real fires and a friendly atmosphere. Good selection of well kept beer to top it off.

We have Sunday lunch here on a fairly regular basis. When we moved to East Sussex 2 years ago we started the search for a really great pub for Sunday lunch. After a year of searching we visited the Crown. I have to say that during our search we were served some very mediocre food. The Crown though gets it all right. A friendly family run pub with first class food.

A friendly, clean and comfortable dog friendly pub with charming staff. The menu is basic pub fare with good sized portions freshly cooked. The fish was delicious but irritatingly arrived on an over crowded plate - sauce & peas in glass bowls, chips in a tin pie dish with the two decent sized pieces of fish skewered into them. So the whole needed to be deconstructed to allow for consumption. Really what is wrong with putting food on a plate? And given that the chips were pale, a bit firm & tasteless and the peas hard it seemed over the top.An additional irritation was the noise, since as well as the tv in the snug, there is another in the dining room. A non dining group who arrived after us asked for the football to be put on and were pretty vocal.So room for improvement ....

After driving through the lovely Sussex countryside, we found ourselves in Newick.Feeling hungry we decided to try The Crown.What a great family run pub.We had one of the best roast dinners we have ever had. Chicken was delicious, vegetables cooked beautifully. Great value for money and quick service with friendly staff.Yes we will be back.

We hadn’t booked, but we’re able to find a table for four for Sunday lunch. It was excellent, choice of three roasts or veggie roast. Good selection of vegetables including cauliflower cheese. Would highly recommend.

Nice looking pub, lit fires and ambience could have been good, if not for a local screeching out her life history, she gave me a headache. I scored this on five elements
