We enjoyed a superb lunch here today. We just stumbled upon this pub while driving through the area and really enjoyed the food we odered: Sausages with amazing onion gravy (extra served in a jug on the side) and the most delicious mashed potato; plus an excellent chilli con carne with a generous helping of meat, not too much rice - perfect. As we were both driving at some point we both stuck to soft drinks but we noticed that Tring Brewery beers are served. Stop here with confidence for a traditional country pub with a lovely welcome and good food.

We were out in search of good old fashioned pub grub in our local area. Well…. Rude bar staff. Disgusting toilet. We ran before ordering. We were greeted with a gruff welcome. I used the bathroom where there was old vomit around the pan and the sink was grey with soap scum.

Four of us dropped in for a Sunday lunch after a long soggy walk in the surrounding countryside. It was very busy, but very friendly - customers & staff - with a wide selection of draught beer. A table was found for us, and we enjoyed some honest and excellent food. Staff were very busy, but not at the expense of great service and good humour!

This was my first visit after the pandemic - and it was as good as ever. It is my sort of pub, the beer is kept well and there is a choice of real ales. The food is excellent and home cooked The other customers are friendly and never make you feel like an intruder - which happens in a lot of pubs. My ham, egg and chips were very tasty and the Eton Mess was wonderful - I needea walk afterwards to work it off!

As usual the welcome was warm and friendly, I was dining with 5 other friends to celebrate a birthday. The lunch was excellent Ham Egg and Chips was my choice and was a good choice. There is always an atmosphere of friendly local pub about the Crown & Sceptre which stands it alone from the usual corporate atmosphere of chain pubs and I would chose it over them every time. Martin & Shirley Keep up the good work.

In the five years since it was last reviewed with the above headline, absolutely nothing's changed. Just why the kitchen staff need to be so rude is beyond me. At the bar this evening, we ordered a bowl of chips. "A large bowl," asked the bar person. "Yes please," we replied... and we waited in the garden...and we waited...and we waited...until, finally, because I was worried that they'd forgotten we were in the garden, I poked my head around the corner to the kitchen, to ask if they knew we were there. "Yes," I'll be out there in a minute," one of the staff said sternly. So, we waited, and waited again, until finally a tiny bowl with about 10 chips arrived. "Is this the large bowl," I asked. "We don't do large bowls, only bowls," she admonished. "Other people seem happy with it," she warned. I never said a word. We were obviously eating the chips she had on her shoulder. We've driven past the Crown and Sceptre quite a few times, and tonight had been determined to stop for a drink and maybe some nibbles. It's expensive, and really unfriendly. We won't be stopping again. I'd advise people looking for good food and friendly face to look elsewhere.

I've visited the Crown and sceptre many times, but the pandemic and various commitments have conspired to keep me away for nearly 2 yrs I wasn't disappointed on my return, good friendly welcome, nice menu of specials, the cheese topped bbq chicken was excellent, good portions, served quickly and well, great service Surprisingly busy for a Wednesday evening ! The Crown & sceptre is what I'd call a 'proper' pub, good range of well kept beers, good menu of home cooked dishes at a fair price, decent portions and no musak ! Would highly recommend

Had a lovely meal here after being let down by another pub locally. The staff were so welcoming and helpful. Unfortunately they had run out of chicken but we had the roast pork and beef and food was really good especially the roast potatoes (loads of them and cooked perfectly) and the gravy yum. Dessert was lovely (although struggled) to eat it all and came with a big pot of custard. Thank you for a lovely meal and being so accommodating with our fussy son.

I can honestly say we have always had fantastic pub food experiences at the Crown and Sceptre. Shirley and Martin warmly welcome all customers, new and old. They genuinely seem to enjoy explaining all about their extensive menus and drinks on tap. While other hostelries scrimp on portion size, Shirley delights in serving plates groaning with generous portions of wonderful home cooked food. If you can make it to the sweet course, she will load dishes with extra cream, ice-cream or custard. The Crown and Sceptre is a rare pub these days: good value food and drink served in a convivial atmosphere surrounded by a real eclectic mix of characters. Long may it continue as such!

This is a real pub selling good beer and home cooked food. Sunday is a particularly busy day. Don’t think bookings are taken but could be wrong. Turned up and hoped for the best. Had to wait about half an hour for a table. Small bar area and no seating available. Some tables had finished eating but took their time to clear the table, could not blame the diners but several people waiting to eat so not so good for taking more money for food. Once seated served quickly. Had run out of one roast meat but still ordered a roast dinner. Delivered piping hot with plenty of gravy. Seemed to have extra potatoes as parsnips small. Very tasty and enjoyable.

Second time to visit this pub first time we sat outside in the garden in the summer so didn't notice just how clicky, rude and unfriendly the place was. My dad loves Ale so he was really impressed with what this pub offered so we thought as they are visiting us we would go back .. well what a frosty, hostile welcome we received. Never ever have I been made to feel so unwelcome in a public place! The owners were just rude and arrogant and clearly didn't like people outside of the village coming in the pub. The pub is the size of a shoebox and we were spoken to badly in front of people. NEVER EVER WOULD I GO BACK and I would strongly advise people not to bother either just disgusting they should be ashamed of themselves!!!!!!!!

This time it was a fairly long wait, it was cold outside and diners lingered over their drinks, but hey who cares ? Martin and Shirley are good hosts and eventually we got a table. It was worth the wait. Beef and lamb was our choice and everything was good and generous. We eventually left a 4pm well fed and watered. After a morning walking on a cold winter's day I was looking forward to a warming log burner as shown on the website. However we were put in the "Barn Bar". This is a wooden hut like a wooden garage. The only source of heat was an electric fire that only heated those near it. A few chairs & benches were available but some had to stand. When we first arrived we were asked to move from the pub car park into a small muddy field like enclosure. I thought that they must have a large party booked. But no, there were only a few cars in the large car park. They don't understand marketing, an empty car park puts potential customers off we have been told by many publicans. This was like pubs twenty years ago when walkers were not welcomed, but now they keep some country pubs going. The toilet - well!No complaints about the food or drink which were both fine, but will think twice about returning especially during the winter.

The roasts were both very nice; the beef a bit too well done for Beth's bloody taste, but she ate all of it. My chicken was delicious. The kids wolfed down their scampi and chips. The puddings were great. I had my all time favourite - spotted dick and custard. With a few drinks the bill was reasonable enough. The service was very good given a busy Sunday lunchtime. Afterwards, we crossed the road opposite to watch a bit of village cricket in the sunshine; which is where I write this. Very highly recommended.

First time I was taken to the Crown & Sceptre I was about 5 years old. We return from time to time and it's always a friendly, cosy place. The home-cooked food always pleases. Most customers are older people. Lots of lovely walks all around so it's a good place for a pub lunch when you've been enjoying fresh air in the outdoors.Nice garden for the children to run around in the summer. 'Barn' area if you have a dog with you, but that's a bit cold and unwelcoming.

I had friends visit from Yorkshire and was looking for good value quality food and real ale. I decide that returning to the Crown & sceptre would be the best choice and again i wasn't disappointed. I had the beef casserole and my friends had the lamb shank and chicken goujons respectively, nobody left hungry or disappointed, a great choice of real ales too.this is just like home cooking its heart warming good quality honest pub food, and i will be returning again and again

The food choices were so many and varied that we were almost spoilt for choice. The landlord was very welcoming and attentive and the atmosphere of this lovely old building really added to our experience. The large car park at the rear gave ample room for a large number of cars. We wish we had discovered this gem before!

We went to the Crown and Septre on my Birthday and it lived up to our expections. The food is cooked on the premises and the portions are designed for diners with a good appetite! I couldn't finish mine. Martin and Shirley are excellent hosts at this wonderful country pub. Well worth a visit.

Really enjoyed the beer and they do change the beer around giving a choice. The food was below average, I had a simple cheese sandwich with a thick layer of cheap Margarine. Either go for a good quality Margarine or use a good English Butter. I tasted the Margarine for the rest of the day.My friend had a cooked meal who also thought it was a below average meal, the meat having lots of fat and not cooked that well. With a little extra care the food could be good its not the quantity its the quality that counts.

Love this place! Used to go a lot in the 70's/80's but just recently have been told by a few of my friends that they have been going there again and how nice the food is, so thought I would re visit, how glad I did, still has that warm cosy welcoming atmosphere and nice friendly people running it, the food is really good, proper home cooked and wholesome, my hubby particually loves the pies! The wooden furnature out the front is a bit tired looking but it is a very old pub! Large garden to the back, definatly our favourite place to go for a drink and a bite to eat, whatever the weather!

My wife and I visited this country pub opposite a cricket ground on 10.9.15We went on the strength of a 2013 review and found the pub to be still as good.Friendly. Good specials board and extensive menu. Food arrived quickly and was very good. Well cooked. Hot and very full plates.Wife had a large cod etc, and I found the steak and onion pie as good as suggested by the 2013 review. Home cooked, tasty pastry and plenty of meat.

this is a locals pub, but they welcome irregular users, I was a regular visitor many years ago, food exceptional for the price, both times both are plates were cleared, and my other half is fussy, and I am vegeratarian , was more than a meal, we laughed with the locals, especially as there is a cricket pitch opposite, and my other half knows 0 about cricket, thanks to Martin & co

Genuinely the best coffee I have ever had. Staff are extremely friendly, the owner goes out of his way to talk to the customers. I would highly recommend a visit.

Unfortunately tonight the food was not up to standard. I had delivery and chips and onion rings were cold. Lamb burger overcooked thick end if tomato - overall disappointing
