The crown has cheek to put a service charge on the food bill when we had to queue at bar to order food and drink. The drinks we bought to the table ourselves all they did was bring food order made to table after a lot longer than thirty minutes. For this they have ordacety to add a service charge. A restaurant with service charge takes orders at table and brings drinks and food to table. No service at Crown!

We visited during the week a large group of local ladies. Staff were patient and super friendly. Food all can out at the same time and in my view good value for money. Nice atmosphere in side. Def check it out.

This pub was recommended to us by a friend, so thought we would pay it a visit one Saturday for lunch. Nice old country pub in a quiet village. The food we had was nice and the staff were polite and friendly. I also noticed they also do cream teas, which I will pop back for with my mum at some point. Will definitely be coming back.

We hired out the front of the pub on a Saturday afternoon for a tea party for my wife's 60th Birthday. From beginning to end the day was brilliant. Everything we arranged with Sara was carried out to perfection. All the staff are lovely and couldn't have been more helpful. The sandwiches and cakes were amazing, plentiful and very reasonably priced. If you have an event to put on or want a local village pub to visit for a drink or food, look no further. Thank you again, everyone had a wonderful time

Went to the Crown in Sandon late afternoon for a couple of pints, with dinner planned at home. The smell of the cod and chips got the better of me, so I called the wife and called off the planned dinner, ordered myself cod and chips which was off the charts, I did add mushy pies which also came in a very nice glass pot which toped off the meal. Highly recommended. Very satisfied costumer

Over priced beer not good dont think it has 5 to 7 days pipe clean and to top it all received bill with service charge added.

We booked a table for 21 people to celebrate a family birthday and were given a lovely big area to ourselves, wine we pre-ordered was chilled and waiting on arrival, and the girl behind the bar dealt with the big and regular rounds of drinks really well. The food was great, my fish was superb and everyone else really enjoyed their food too, all meals were served lovely and hot and all at the same time (no mean feat with 21 servings) The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, we really couldnt fault our visit and everyone made it a really great afternoon for us all - superb work to everyone!

We visited yesterday for Sunday lunch - there were 11 of us in total & we all had a lovely meal & experience! 9 of us I ordered the traditional roast dinner & it was so good! 2 ordered the home made burger & again said how lovely it was… The service was fantastic from the minute we walked in the door, every member of staff was friendly, helpful & polite This pub is a little gem & we can’t wait to return again soon THANK YOU 😊

Just had a really lovely Sunday roast. Portions were very generous (I had to give some to my husband as I couldn't finish it all) and not one element of the meal could be faulted. I had the pork and my husband had the beef. The crackling was perfect and the veg selection covered the rainbow. Staff and atmosphere were friendly and welcoming. Did I mention that it was great value for money at only £11.95 each for the main? We will be back.

Beautiful traditional family run pub, super friendly staff, lovely food and very reasonable prices. Came with friends for afternoon tea, there was loads. I will be back for a roast very soon

Went for bingo and the owner and a bald man was on a table with some other people and they obviously had too much to drink. They caused a massive argument and then the bald man was threatening and saying vile things. To the point where the bingo was stopped and bingo players were getting up and leaving! Quite funny really at how a “manager” would allow this to happen and how she even joined in. The fact she thought she did something by slamming the door as we were walking out had us all in hysterics. Food was diabolical but at least we will have a laugh about this for the foreseeable future. The fact she made the point that we wasn’t welcome back was hilarious, as if we are coming back until this pub gets taken over. Making up vile lies in the review responses about us being rude to 16 year olds and paying people to leave reviews by giving them free rounds so the real story gets lost in the reviews. Just shows how some people shouldn’t be allowed to own businesses.

I would be inclined to ignore the negative review of a few days ago and look at the pubs facebook assessment of the evening and the strong support they have received from satisfied regulars who were also there on said evening. This is an excellent ‘local’ family run pub - the food is great and very reasonably priced. They run regular community, charity supporting based events such as free coffee mornings and clearly make huge efforts on a daily basis to make the pub as good as it can be. This sort of Pub is the ‘life blood’ that many villages have sadly lost in recent years. Keep up the good work!

Found this perfect little pub after being let down at another venue mr and my family had an amazing Christmas lunch here the kids were pleased and to my suprise even the mothinlaw loved the food here I can't fault this place at all great staff amazing family friendly atmosphere definitely will be returning thanku so much for a perfect day

9 of us had our Christmas meal there last night we did the same last christmas. Absolutely loved it, all staff are very welcoming and helpful. Couldn't fault the evening. We also meet here on a weekly basis and have no reason to stop returning. Merry christmas See you all in the new year

We went to one of the events organised by Sarah and it was excellent. The boys got to meet Santa and received a present 🎁. The food was amazing and staff were excellent! Very polite, well mannered and very helpful. Thank you for a great Santa experience 🎅

I absolutely love this pub! It is family run and the staff are lovely! They are always coming up with themed events! I went with friends and my son to the Santa breakfast, the grotto was so lovely and the breakfast was yummy! It is always very reasonably priced compared to other pubs! The roasts are lovely, so are the afternoon teas and fish! Can’t recommend this place enough! I can’t wait to sample more food and attend more events!

We tried the takeaway service tonight which was absolutely amazing and tasted delicious , worth the money that we paid , was still hot on delivery and on time we will be using the crown again , staff were polite and easy to order .

Took my Mum for a meal here at lunchtime with my Cousin and my Uncle. Staff are so lovely and friendly here and made you feel very welcome. Food was fantastic. Will definitely be returning. 😊

Our fifth visit this calendar year. Same usual great food and polite,prompt service - this is a family business and they clearly put their heart and soul into it. I'd say pound for pound this is easily the best value food venue in the area. Keep up the good work.

Happened upon this place as we were travelling back from Colchester. What a find! I was with two American friends visiting for a holiday. The bacon and cheese croquettes starter was simply gorgeous, 4 large croquettes bursting with gooey cheese and bacon. The ribs were falling apart, lovely tasty bbq sauce that even the Americans loved. Couldn’t believe the value for money. The service was top notch too, friendly and attentive staff, and the pub itself is lovely too. I can’t recommend this place enough.

We had sole use of the pub for my wife's surprise birthday party. There aren't many places you can book out on a Saturday night but Sarah & Charlotte welcomed me the first time I enquired, and I never looked back. It was perfect for what we wanted - to have approx. 90 of our closest friends and family, including kids to celebrate with was amazing. Certainly not to big to make it feel disjointed but also not small where we all felt on top on one another. We had seating for the oldies, separate food area and the kids had plenty of room to run around outside....if they weren't dancing! The bar staff were great, very friendly and able to cope with a busy bar. We had a DJ (Geoff Grove) who had a good area to set up and ready made dance floor in front of him and at the back we had enough room for some LED numbers and arranged balloon garland. Sarah helped with our food choice, how to arrange the pub and allowed us to decorate the pub with banners, photo's etc. I couldn't speak highly enough of how much they helped in making the night a great success. I'd highly recommend if you had an occasion like this coming up.

So tonight was our second time at the crown, again no ales, service shocking! Barmaids had more interested in the dogs in the pub, actually one barmaid served us with beers, then walked off, didn't pay as walked out. Looked for Shiraz in fridge, apart from not doing Shiraz no problem, red wine not kept in fridge. Customer service does not exist!

We ate here on Easter Saturday for lunch (2 adults and 1 baby). We were really impressed with the food, everything was lovely and freshly made. The portions were also very generous. It's very cosy and comfortable inside, and we had a nice quiet table with plenty of room for our pram and high chair. The staff were really friendly and accommodating. We also had a takeaway afternoon tea, which was lovely.

We visited the Crown pub in Sandon as we were recommended by a friend that the Sunday roast was excellent and very well priced. We were not disappointed we had a choice of Chicken beef pork and Lamb roast with all the trimmings from just £10,50 with a £1.50 supplemenf for lamb. We decided to have the camembert for starters which we shared and was very tasty. The roast dinner was superb with plenty of veg and roast potatoes mash and Yorkshire pudding with stuffing and a small sausage. Could not fault it at all and all nice and hot. We finished with homemade Apple pie and custard lovely. Excellent service and very attentive the whole time. We will be returning with others soon

Went on a very quiet Saturday night but food was lovely, very friendly welcome and a pretty good choice of wine. Bar staff told us they'd been busy all day and were due to be busy the following day. Can't quite understand why they were so quiet because this is a great local pub with good food and welcoming staff. Will be back to try their Sunday roast.

We went as a party of four for Sunday lunch having never visited before, having followed on facebook for several months. We received a warm welcome, got great service, the food was very reasonably priced and of exceptional quality. Good range of lagers/beer. The pub is dog friendly so we will take our pooch in future. Worth following on facebook as they do some great offers. We will go back sooner rather than later and will be recommending to friends/family.

I discovered this pub in June, staff are very friendly and make you welcome, food is very well priced and is very well prepared. I am so impressed with the food service and staff I visit weekly which I have since June. I could not rate it any higher, I strongly recommend this pub. If you are a regular the staff let you have something like a dessert that is not on the meal deal. I would recommend ploughman's and brownie or Eaton mess.

Stylish village pub just outside Chelmsford. Revamped to retain bags of character. I am loathe to review as don’t want it to get too crowded. Meals excellent and what value! Local carved ham, three eggs chips £8.95 Ploughman’s £5.50 and lots more. Excellent and recommended.

We tried The Crown tonight as part of the eat out to help out scheme.I opted for the Nachos to start and my other half had the chicken strips. The chicken strips were good, the Nachos were just ok, the guacamole didn’t look home made it had a very pale Green colour.Next up I opted for the chicken burger which was just Chicken Goujons you would likely get from the freezer with a piece of lettuce and a piece of tomato in a bun. My other half’s order was in correct and she was given a chicken burger instead of a Beef burger. When we brought it up we were told the kitchen is very busy and there would be a long wait, not the response I would expect considering they made the mistake it should be put right as soon as possible.Not wanting to wait anymore we agreed to both have the chicken burgers.Again the food is pretty average and I would’ve been disappointed if I had to pay full price for it. During our meal nobody came to see if everything was ok like you would normally expect.I’m glad we gave The Crown a go, but I’m not sure we would return based on this experience.

Not been to Crown for years, and now been back a number of time with different friend and family since lockdown. Lots of measures put in place with loads of hand gels dotted about.Went with the family on a Friday night for the fresh fish and chips, which didn’t disappoint! I’m not a big fish lover, but when I heard that fish was fresh from the market that day, I had to give it a go. Will definitely be going back again for the fish.My daughters both had the burgers and they said they really enjoyed them, looked fresh and not the normal rubbish that pubs normally serve to kids.The landlady was very attentive coming out the kitchen to check we all enjoyed the food.From the family point, a lovely fairy garden my daughters loved looking at everything as a lot to see in such a small area. We arrived at noon, the time we had booked with the pub. Landlady said they weren’t opening till 12.30. The temperature outside was 34C so we had find shade near the church for half an hour.She apologised for the delay saying the waitress taking the booking should have said opening was 12.30.Service was hesitant, slow , not very professional. Coffee tasteless Food below average ( took 40 minutes to arrive). Side salad was not washed , tuna mayonnaise filling for baguettes was low quality mayonnaise and dry. Music playing was intrusive and distracted our conversation. Would not recommend.

We pre-booked to eat here and when we arrived we got served our drinks and our order taken within an acceptable time. The menu choices were very limited compared to their website but these are tough times for pubs and restaurants so we were happy to go with a burger and sausage and chips. Unfortunately at this point we were told there was a 45 minutes wait for the food to be cooked. We obviously had the option of leaving but chose to stay and wait. After 55 minutes the waitress returned to tell us that one of our menu choices was no longer available. At this point we decided to give up and go home via the local fish and chip shop. We weren't asked to pay for our drinks which was a positive, hence the one star.I'm not sure what went wrong and hopefully it's a one off. However I can't see us going back there to find out. Sorry but I can't recommend it based on our experience

So our family had our first meal out since lockdown. We chose The Crown in Sandon.Service was quick and friendly.Food was very nice and great value especially with the added bonus of the government eat out scheme.Lots of hand sanatizers,lots of signs for keeping distance.Felt safe and enjoyed the atmosphere.

First family meal out since lockdown so only wanted to go local. Have been to The Crown for drinks previously. All good social distancing and hygiene measures were in place so we were very comfortable. Had the roast dinner of pork and beef. Food came out piping hot and meat was lovely. Service was very good and everywhere very clean. Lovely welcoming atmosphere will definitely return soon.

Took a trip to The Crown in Sandon for afternoon tea with family which we booked in the time slot. It was a friendly and warm atmosphere there, run by a kind and effective couple who made the afternoon very positive and enjoyable for all of us by checking we had everything we needed, including drink orders, so excellent customer service. Also the Afternoon Tea was delicious, nice selection of cakes, and sandwiches, and was provided to us quickly too. Plenty of health and safety provided also to guidelines given. We all enjoyed it very much, and will be going again.

Visited with my mum and sisters, booked via messenger, speedy reply. We were warmly greeted and told we could choose where to sit, the food was freshly cooked, tasty and plentiful. The service was also great and the social distancing well thought out. I have also been told the afternoon tea is delicious but am yet to try it. Thank you, we will be back.

Took my Nan here for lunch today, was so lovley! the staff were so friendly on arrival and we were given menus straight away. We had the Ham Egg and Chips, Cod and Chips & Chicken Burger. I was told the fish was brought in that day and it was absolutley delicous. We also had a dessert that was fantastic. I have been to the crown a number of times over the years but under the new ownership its the best its ever been.

Went for lunch (for 2) the pub/restaurant is in a lovely setting, on entering and going to the bar we were given a warm welcome, well set out bar but no beer on draught. We were offered the menu’s but noticed a board offering Fresh Beer Batter Cod, we both decided on this option. On arrival I noticed my cod was skin side up which is in itself unusual, I turned my Cod over only to discover three burn marks as if it had been on a very hot griddle, they had tried to hide it. Then I made a mistake of eating the meal as I should have sent it back the Batter was not crispy and I did not finish the Cod or the supermarket frozen chips that accompanied it.When they collected my plate they noticed I had left a substantial amount and asked if everything was ok, I stated that it was not and I would not visit again, she just walked away. When I went to pay, I received no apology whatsoever as at least an apology would have been the leat they could provide. There were only approximately six other customers there so no excuse of being busy. POOR FOOD POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

Can not fault this family friendly traditional village pub. A fantastic find! Ample parking, an amazing tea room and superb food. Everything is reasonably priced and nothing is too much trouble. There's an excellent selection of drinks and all of the food is freshly prepared, locally sourced and the portions are brilliant. They offer smaller portions for little people and older people too.The quiz night is popular and all proceeds go to charity. The staff are friendly and the family who run things are lovely.Pop along and you'll want to return.

We stumbled across this wonderful family run pub a month or so for lunch and have returned every week since, we live in Leigh on sea and it is a good few miles away but its worth the journey, the pub itself is warm, welcoming and very attractive, the family who run the Crown are very friendly and helpful, the food ? GREAT !!!!!...they deserve success as they have made this into a really lovely place to visit which we will regularly, well done to all at the crown !!!!!!

We were looking for somewhere last minute to eat on a Sunday afternoon and I am so glad we chose The Crown. The staff and owners were very welcoming, the atmosphere was buzzing, full of locals enjoying the rugby. There were 6 of us eating, the service was fast and efficient, the roast dinner was fab and plentiful, the kitchen even arranged for our son to have chicken and chips, even though it was not on the menu. If you are looking for a traditional pub that serves good quality food at competitive prices, The Crown is definitely worth a visit.

Well I visited here for Sunday lunch having pre-booked with my friend, only to be told that there was no booking. After much debate they eventually accommodated us but I must say the elderly gentleman behind the bar accused me of being rude (which I was not). The only reason I stayed was I was taking my U3A Luncheon Group there the following Wednesday.

The Crown were fantastic in accommodating and hosting our engagement party. Charlotte and her staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming and all of our guests commented on the ambience and politeness. Finger buffet was great, with enough selection for our guests. We’d 100% recommend to anyone who was looking for somewhere to hold a small celebration!

We recently held a gathering at The Crown and they opened especially for us on a Monday. The staff provided great service and were really helpful and thoughtful as this was a wake for our lovely Mum. Dealing with Charlotte was easy and she was very considerate of our situation. Thank you all.

The pub has been refurbished and had a recent change of ownership. Very friendly welcome and family feel. Good value Sunday dinner at £10. Food was plentiful and beef tender. All served hot.

Fresh fish thurs.. amazing! We could have the fish cooked anyway so battered, poached or grilled. The staff where friendly and had told us that fresh fish would now be served every thurs and fri. Skate was also available. Great place for good beer and decent wine by the glass. We will be back.

Visited on Friday evening for a drink with my neighbour. We were not disappointed. The pub is under new owners, very welcoming, lovely atmosphere and a buzz for a Friday night, something that has been missing for some time.

overall the food was good value other than the seasonal vegetables comprising of nothing more than peas.Burgers were very nice and the service was good but the big let down was the bad language used by customers at the bar it was shocking the f word was used at least 10 times i really don't expect this kind of language when you nip out for something to eat.Raised with the bar staff not interested and i know they heard the language as they admitted this to me.The excuse re the seasonal vegetable only consisting of peas was that they were sorting the veg out for tomorrow would not call again

Came for a quick drink whilst waiting for my daughter to dance at the High school. So much better than it was before! Nice and bright, a good atmosphere and lovely to see families enjoying it together. We played cards and just relaxed. We didn’t eat but the menu looks good. Staff were friendly and welcoming. We will come back.

Had a great family get together 20 of our lot all ages 8 to 80 ,thought it might be chaos with everyone ordering different meals,but everything was fine, everyone said they enjoyed their food, everything was served up hot and fresh quickly'.all the staff were friendly 'it's a lovely old pub, plenty of character, .

Recently visited The Crown and was not disappointed.

The pub has been refurbished nicely, with the rooms knocked into 1 large space, which makes way more sense, however, they need to work on some basic elements to improve on the whole...

As a group of old schoolfriends, this is our fourth reunion visit to The Crown in five years (we gave last year a miss because of the grumpy landlord the previous year).

While walking our dog I noticed that this pub was under new management and been refurbished. There was a sign saying dog friendly so we thought we would try it out . The staff were very friendly and helpful and the menu was reasonably priced we had a starter sharer platter which was plentiful.I will definitely be going back and I Highly recommend a visit.
