Pig and Whistle in Chelmsford

We went with our friends Lee and Sam, who had been once before and had raved about the place. We were not disappointed...........it was frankly extraordinary. An enchanting place that is full of charm, that also serves some really beautiful food. Great menu, great winelist, superb service and a fantastic experience. Wow.

What a gorgeous restaurant. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome by the lovely front of house lady (sorry i didn't catch your name!!). The set menu was not only delicious but excellent value too. Everything was just perfect and I can understand why this restaurant wins awards and is a contender again for restaurant of the year in Essex. Thank you for the special birthday treats as well, a lovely touch. I just wish we lived closer, but we will definitely be back!!

Absolute treasure of a restaurant hidden on the edge of Chelmsford. On arrival you receive a warm welcoming, drinks menu is outstanding the wines are well sourced. The food outstanding all locally sourced and super fresh. Very responsibly priced given the quality of your experience. The restaurant is highly designed in keeping with the original building. Will most definitely be back. We had lobster, risotto and the meso cauliflower. Excellent cheese board it was gone before I could get a photo 🤣

Everything first class...food, vibe, decor, food, music and the hosts just absolutely on point..brilliant...

Quite expensive (£100 for 2 roast dinners).. no option for 1 course.. £12 glass of wine, £8 for an orange and lemonade! Having said that, service was excellent and the pub had a quality feel about it. Roast was OK... meat excellent. Sides all @ £6 each (4 small florets of cauliflower cheese), stuffing, we could do without next time. All in all, a nice experience, I'll go back, but won't rush back

Horrible nasty owners very rude especially if you send anything back, never been treated so badly in all my life! Steak was not warm at all so when I sent it back they could not be more ruder if they tried! Very angry men

We visited the Pig and Whistle Saturday evening and had a lovely time. The staff are attentive but not intrusive, and the food and drink were fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would recommend it to anyone who would like somewhere special to go, with great food and service.

What’s not to love? The hosts and staff were excellent, the food (and food choice) were absolutely out of this world. The wine list was incredible. We had a beautiful leisurely evening and already planning our next visit. Added bonus: no kids running around/misbehaving spoiling the atmosphere.

This was our 1st visit here as a family of five. I wanted somewhere a bit special, booked, and was then a bit concerned about a handful of previous reviews. I needn't have worried. The restaurant is decorated in a quirky, interesting style and is bedecked with pretty fairy lights. It was heaving when we arrived, but we were greeted warmly, and offered a friendly attentive service for the duration of our visit. Special mention must be made to the lady who is front of house. She's a real credit to the business. Very professional, very amiable. We all chose the set 2 course Sunday lunch. 4 of us opted for the roast beef dinner with sides of cauliflower cheese, with the remaining person in our party choosing the whole lemon sole. A beer, a soft drink, water and a bottle of red were our drinks of choice. In truth, it was faultless. The beef was pink, the potatoes were crispy, and everything was very well seasoned. The fish was also very flavoursome, generous in size, almost buttery, and flaky. Desserts were 4x sticky toffee puddings (tasty, but much more sauce next time please!) and a divine lemon posset with ginger shortbread. All in all, we were all delighted with our dining experience, and would happily recommend the Pig and Whistle. I'd love to return again soon on another day of the week to sample some more of the menu items on offer. Thanks Pig and Whistle for a truly memorable special birthday venue.

This is one of my favourite spots in Chelmsford. It’s fine dining food but with a relaxed atmosphere. Very romantic and my go to spot to take any visiting friends or family.

We had an absolutely lovely evening ( March 5th) celebrating our daughters birthday with the family. Greeted by very friendly staff. All staff where very attentive. Food was amazing, we are certainly going back.

As per usual we had a fantastic lunch made all the more special by lovely Grace the waitress. Pig &Whistle is a warm and inviting restaurant with lots of memorabilia from days gone buy around the restaurant. Truly is something special.

A wonderful meal celebrating my mother’s 86th birthday. The food was fabulous, and the table was in a beautiful position. So many lovely things to look at around us. Only the second time we have visited and we absolutely love this restaurant. The food is always excellent and the service exemplary. But what makes it so special is how friendly the staff are. Always so welcoming and taking time to ensure you have what you want and are satisfied, but without being overbearing. So natural - and always have time to talk to people even when busy. Eclectic eatery , good atmosphere super service , food was good too.

Great atmosphere and a really cosy vibe. Love the fact there are affordable options with the set menu! Food delicious and service was great. Business cards with a number on would be great for the older generation who aren’t tech savvy and want to book a table.

Nice quality Sunday roast but not a great deal of it. Portion sizes are small. Pricey

5* Restaurant! Amazing food every time we go. We have also tried 2 of the 7 course tasting menus - a taste of love for valentines and taste of Christmas. Both meals were delicious and we even tried food we have never had before. Great value for money. Lovely atmosphere. Staff are friendly and welcoming. We found dining at the Pig & Whistle to be nothing less than a totally delightful experience and there is absolutely no doubt we will return there in the not too distant future. It is a matter of fact two branches of our family circle have already received a recommendation they should visit and enjoy the restaurant.

They was very rude to us gave us a filthy look when we ask for tap water, and said, you will have to order a drink with your food I replied, I've never heard of those rules, I don't like rules,with that the waiter pulled the menu out of my hand,I didn't like the way we was treated, so we decided to leave, as we got up they approached us and said how rude to leave,we said you have been rude to us so we are leaving, they told us to get out or they will call the police,I said call the police we haven't done anything wrong,with that he let go of the front door and it hit me,then he opened the door when we was in the car park and shouted out you are banned,as if we would want to back there and be treated so badly it was an awful experience

The best way of describing our first ever visit to the Pig and Whistle is "We will definitely go there again!" From the moment we stepped through the door we were made very welcome and the matching atmosphere enveloped us. Ours was one of the evening's first bookings and by the time we left the restaurant was approaching being totally full. A good illustration of how popular the Pig and Whistle is, justifiably so. The service was very good and surpassed only by the quality of the food which was superb. My wife had the Marmite glazed mackerel, followed by the Frutti di mare. My choices were the. Tempura cauliflower florets and the Herb crusted pollack. Neither of us were in anyway disappointed with our selections, all were beautifully cooked and presented. As I was driving the opportunity to investigate the interesting wine list could not exist. Similarly the range of bottled beers was out of bounds. My wife faired better and enjoyed her elderflower tonic - a natural choice. Perhaps she should have been driving! The Pig and Whistle's website allows for online bookings and viewing of its menus. That is exactly what we will do again, and it will not be too long before that happens!

Went to the Pig and Whistle for lunch for the first time today, what a great place. Wonderful traditional old fashioned feel, but at the same time, beautifully decorated with style and panache, you feel at ease as soon as you walk through the door....

Went out for Valentine’s day/evening! Was the best meal I have ever had !!! Fish starter , châteaubriand Caesar, salad, oxtail, Mac and cheese and chips Apple dessert Unbelievable good ! Service was friendly and top quality I’ll be going back for sure

It was the first time we came here, and it was for a Valentine's Day dinner. We were well impressed with the way we were welcomed, with everyone smiling, and with the beautiful decor. We went for a 3-course à la carte; the food was well presented and delicious, and the service was outstanding. We will definitely revisit.

My wife and I were really impressed by the restaurant. The waiters were friendly and quick at bringing drinks to our table. The three course fixed price menu tasted amazing and were presented extremely well. The beef bourguignon tasted similar to the best one I had when I was in Paris. Overall we were very impressed such a high quality restaurant was in Chelmsford. We will definitely be visiting again!

I came for a roast dinner and I was absolutely blown away. The roast potatoes were crispy and fluff. and full of flavour. My dessert also was incredible as well as my starter Will definitely be returning.

Went for lunch today for first time under a recommendation from a family member who had been before. What a delightful place. Quirky but tasteful interior. Decor took your eyes everywhere. We were warmly welcomed and offered seating at our preference which was nice as we chose a quieter area of the restaurant which had about 5 tables in but we ended up having the area all to ourselves which was great. The service was attentive throughout the meal without it being intrusive and the meal itself was excellent. Four of us dined and all our main meals were delicious. Deserts were amazing too and the meal finished off with coffees. Absolutely 100% would recommend and will definitely be visiting again. In my opinion, this is the perfect place for couples or families with more grown up children ( young adults ). Not a place for young children. Great value for money. Really enjoyable experience, first time I have been back in 6 years, when it was a gastro pub. It is now a restaurant only. Food was very good, my pork tenderloin was perfectly cooked. My three fellow diners all thoroughly enjoyed their food as well. Staff are very friendly and helpful, did not rush us to order. The decor is lovely, very eclectic. Would have no hesitation in recommending.

We ate here yesterday, taking my elderly mother in law out to dinner to relieve her of having to cook a large, belated, Christmas dinner for our visit. The service was beautiful. We arrived a little early and I had apparently put the wrong number of guests on our reservation. This was dealt with so kindly and without fuss. The menu was varied and there was a range of mock-tails for me (the designated driver) to try out and which I really enjoyed. I found the eclectic decor welcoming and delightful. The dining chairs were ample and comfortable... I really can't recall the last time I ate in a restaurant with such comfortable seating. The food was great. Delicious. A varied, straightforward menu with, I felt, plenty of choice as there was something all three of us were excited to try. And did I mention how fabulous the service was? All the way through, observant, attentive, never intrusive. I hope very much to be able to visit again some time in the future. I highly recommend a visit.

Stunningly over priced. We paid £160 for 3 courses and 2 drinks each. For that money I would expect to be wowed but the food was just average. Really disappointed with this, there are scores of pubs nearby that would deliver an equal experience at half the price. Absolutely over rated.

This place came highly recommended and we were very disappointed. The menu is very good, there are lots of interesting options, including some game. The execution sadly missed the spot though. I opted for the Camembert starter which was fine. For main course I had the pork belly. The black pudding and chorizo cubes lacked a bit of finesse but again, it was fine. My wife’s meal was cold, though and the Brussels were badly overcooked. The desert looked okay but was a bit too sickly. The cheese selection was pretty poor. The service wasn’t good either. We had to ask for our wine to be poured and eventually gave up and opted for self service. Upon opening the red i was advised the i could see its not corked but was asked if I want to try it anyway. I didn’t bother challenging but… how can you see that wine isn’t corked? The plates were cleared but glasses ant bottles weren’t. We ended up with three empty wine bottles on our table. Two of us shared the cheese for desert and were given one knife. The building is lovely, and there is a wonderful traditional feel when you walk in. Unfortunately there were only three tables occupied (including ours) all night so there wasn’t any atmosphere. Because it came so highly recommended we will probably give it another chance. Maybe the fact that it was so empty impacted on the experience.

5 stars really aren't enough. Every time I have been to the Pig and Whistle I come away feeling genuinely special. The decor, the atmosphere, the service, and the food are all TOP NOTCH. Brendan and his amazing team of staff are all amazing. We went there for my birthday last night and were looked after above and beyond.... Thank you again `Brendan and team. Yet again we enjoyed a wonderful evening at the P&W, the food as always was excellent, the care and attention to detail of service superb. It was our son’s 40th birthday celebration and even that was recognised. We cannot recommend this restaurant too highly and will continue to support the hosts - it’s difficult to make something perfect any better but they always seem to bring another dimension to impress. Thank you, it’s our special eating place in Essex.

*Final opinion with no more editing/adding comments* Interestingly the owner cannot take constructive criticism of the restaurant, only because I named the dish differently. Anyway, if people cannot take constructive criticism for any improvement of their restaurant, I think us as customers have the right to lower the rating but guess not, Hey-Ho! EDIT 2: owner removed original comments which claimed this was the wrong restaurant, with no reply, due to this attitude have knocked down to 3 stars as it was a very dismissive response to a fair review. Pros: the food was lovely and reasonably priced, I had a sunday roast which was delicious - I also recommend the pork scratchings for starters. The building is lovely with lovely decor. Cons: Although the staff were all lovely, the service was quite slow, due to the set up of the restaurant (some tables can't obviously be seen from the bar/kitchen area) we had to wait a long time for service. The wait for food was fine, but after the meal we were left waiting until I decided to go to the bar. There was another table near us that had been there over 3 hours. My only other minor recommendation would be for the staff to have a smarter uniform, the younger staff were dressed quite casually for the overall feel of the place. The cocktails were also a bit dissapointing.

Once again at the P&W for another of their great events this time Taste of Essex. Seven Beautiful dishes cooked to perfection (particularly the meat cookery which was sublime!). A blooming good Rum Baba for desert as well! The evening was paired with exceptional wine served by the enthusiastic Lucy and Ollie from the New Hall Vineyard who quite rightly so are very proud of their excellent produce. (If you have never tried New Hall you really should. We always have a bottle when visiting the P&W). The restaurant was beautifully decorated for Christmas and a lovely cosy place to be on a winter's night. Remains a solid favourite of ours.

Visited last night for a 7 course tasting menu - the taste of Essex. I'd booked this event as an early Xmas present for my friend, and it did not disappoint, the setting is magical at the beat of times but decorated for Xmas with soft lighting was lovely. Seated swiftly and quickly offered drinks, this then followed by 7 courses of delicious food from suppliers across Essex, each paired with wine from a local winery, as it was poured fully explained as to the detail behind the bottle. Staff were attentive, but not intrusive. Whilst I could have eaten more of every course based on the taste alone! We left full and satisfied. Would certainly return for future events, for the price to 'taste' so much was perfect ! We both agreed the rib of beef was a highlight!

Had a fabulous time at the 7 course Taste of Essex event. Superb selection of oysters, salmon, pork, beef, venison, rum baba, and cheese with chutney. Small plate of each to give the quintessential taste without being too much. Each course paired with New Hall Vineyard wines. Had to double check the bill as all wines were included in the menu price. Small plates, perfectly formed, great value. Goes without saying that the welcome and ambience were top notch.

Had a lovely time at the taste of essex menu last night the 7 courses were excellent and the wine complemented the courses well The dessert was to die for. Staff were rushed off there feed they all did really great. Can not wait for next one.

My husband and two very close friends visited this restaurant last night for a ‘7 Course Food and Wine Tasting Experience’. Lovely cosy place with intimate dining areas and very tasteful Christmas decorations added to the ambience. We were really looking forward to this. We have all been to restaurants before for tasting menus. However this experience is one none of us would want to repeat. If this was their first outing at this type of dining then maybe they can be forgiven for the disjointed service and micro portions served. If not, they should be ashamed of charging so much for what amounted to 7 tablespoons of food in total. Nothing wrong with the food, but you really cannot ‘taste’ anything in a tablespoon of food. It consisted of 1 small oyster, a teaspoon of smoked salmon, an inch square sized cube of pork with a cube of Pom Anna potato and a basil leaf sized leaf of green of some sort, and a teaspoon of sauce, ( which was served on a stone cold plate so the food was cold. Hot food = hot plate? We did request that future hot courses be served on hot plates, which they did but made us feel uncomfortable by mentioning it every time they placed the next course in front of us within earshot of other diners), the same sized portion of rib of beef and 5 pea sized onions, followed by the tiniest slice of venison that would fit in the palm of a child’s hand, a small lump of rum baba and a teaspoon of cream and 2 ultra thin wedges of cheese, 3 celery sticks (for 4 people), a grape each, and 4 crackers for 4 of us plus 6 oat crackers for our friend who is gluten intolerant. She also was not catered for re a jus for some of the courses, although a gluten free brownie was provided instead of rum baba. Sounds a lot doesn’t it? You could have fitted it all on a tea plate with room to spare. We have never left a restaurant so hungry before. As for the English vineyard wine tasting, it would have been nice if the paired wines were served with the correct meals. It was chaotic. Every wine was served to us after we had eaten our spoon of food. We decided to order a bottle Malbec wine by this time. That in itself posed a problem for the young lady who served us who stated she always had trouble opening wine and struggled so much she had to go and get help. Felt sorry for her as clearly her training is lacking. Generally, though, the staff were very pleasant and did their best given the chaos. Our bill came to over £360. We feel ripped off for this amount of money for 7 spoons of food and still hungry. To cap it all, the evening ran well over time. It stated quite clearly that dining would start at 7.15pm and finish at 10.15pm, so if you were getting a taxi, arrange it for this time. We were glad we didn’t. It was almost 11.15 when we left having just downed our coffee swiftly as they were clearing other tables around us. This establishment is out in the country down a long lane. Had we been unable to secure a cab I don’t know what we would have done.

Wonderful Sunday lunch with my mum, two courses for £28, bargain. Service was immaculate, staff, attentive and friendly. Carvery served on very warm plates and just delicious. Special shout out to the puddings, cinnamon ice cream just amazing

Sunday lunch celebration after two of us having major surgery. The meal and service was very good, but expensive in comparison with better establishments. We felt rushed as soon as finishing our deserts, bill put on the table. Then another male appeared and rudely told us to leave as they needed the table. The attitude ruined all the good service the previous staff had given us. We could have been told to please vacate and maybe have coffee/drinks in the bar to free up the table!?? If that was the owner I've read about in previous reviews, you really need to brush up on your customer service skills otherwise you won't have a business for much longer!

I absolutely adore this little gem of a place. Its beautiful decor with gorgeous lighting and candles gives a stunning ambience. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. Food is gorgeous and no ‘lean cuisine’ here. Great portion sizes. Looked after on every level. I couldn’t think of anywhere better to spend my birthday.. thank you Pig and Whistle.. 💖

What a great evening. The restaurant was lovely, the food was ‘excellent ’ and the atmosphere was all about fun, especially if you join in the banter with the two owners, Brendan & Justin. Will definitely return Gobble, gobble

A spacious car park. A warm and friendly welcome into homely dining areas filled with interesting items of decor. A lovely, circular table for four which I enjoy for its' sociability but is rare. Such friendly and efficient staff who know the dishes and wines well. A hugely varied, seasonal menu including a very reasonably priced set menu (Thursday evening) . Two of us had the 2 course set menu and two had 'a la carte' and all dishes arrived in a well paced manner and were hot and fresh, generous but not overwhelming, very attractive and superbly cooked. The recommended wine was so good that we had a second bottle. When booking we had been told that they had a second sitting so we wondered whether to linger over desserts but our waitress was happy that our table wouldn't be required so invited us to stay as long as we wished, which we did! Oh and my G&T was made precisely as I had requested! Perfect! We will be back, repeatedly! This should be No.1 around Chelmsford.

Honestly this restaurant blew my mind. How is this not a Michelin Star?! The food was divine, service was attentive, humorous and helpful. The waiter didn't hover but was always there when needed. Couldn't recommend enough and will definitely be back.

Booked here for a family birthday lunch . Great atmosphere, lovely decor, intimate and cosy . Attention to detail . Warmly greeted and shown to a round table at the window with countryside views . Drinks to start and my Pornstar cocktail was one of the best I’ve had . Starter was Moules and main was Lemon sole meunière with chunky chips . Impeccable service from Brendan and the team . Nothing too much trouble . Not been here for a few years and still excellent. We all enjoyed our meal and the pork belly and steak both looked delicious. Highly recommend this fine dining restaurant.

We arrived at the pig and whistle in pouring rain to find that there was nowhere to park ! We went into the restaurant and we’re shown to our table. Our booking was for 8:15 at 8:35 a waiter came to our table and said that we were the end of service and consequently some meals were in unavailable, no Beef Wellington, no pork chops and no Skate wing I chose chicken which was fine 5 people out of a table if 10 chose Monkfish with mussels and curried lentils . When the waitress came to clear the table she asked if all was well with the food and one of the party told her that the monkfish was overcooked bland and generally not good! She said that she would pass it on where upon we were visited by one of the owners who demanded to know how we would cook it !! Overall the food was overpriced £39 for beef wellington with NO vegetables all veg were extra at nearly £5 a portion And apparently no one who knew how to pour a Hendricks Gin and Tonic no ice no cucumber and no lime! We will not be returning!!!

My first visit to The Pig & Whistle was just amazing. I read about this place online & thought it looked worth a visit. Well, it certainly WAS. The decor & service were second to none. The food was just AMAZING. I am a vegetarian & eating out can be a disappointment but NOT here. I had the cauliflower katsu curry. It was up there with one of the best I' ve ever had. This really is an amazing place. All the staff were tip top. I travelled 40 minutes to get here & it was worth every one of them. I shall DEFINATELY be back.

What a find! Had lunch here for my birthday and it honestly couldn’t have been better. The atmosphere was perfect - delightful dining space, attractively lit, good music playing quietly but adding enough ambience and serving staff friendly and professional. Then came the food which was absolutely delicious. I had butternut squash bharjis followed by chicken supreme and then crumble for dessert. As far as I’m concerned, the food was faultless. My husband had broccoli and Stilton soup, Italian sausage linguine and sticky toffee pudding - again perfect.

Reputation richly deserved. Excellent staff welcoming, service throughout, food presentation and quality superb. Overall excellent dining experience. Will not hesitate to recommend.
