Normally the service at The Crown is impeccable and I will always recommend people to go. However, two weeks ago I booked a table for 6 (business lunch) at 2:15pm and found the lady (older?) to be quite unhelpful with providing detail on their distancing policy and with remembering my details. I had to call back a second time to confirm a table for 6 and that I was happy to arrive earlier than I initially wanted after being told that the kitchen was closing at 2:30pm. I decided to brush the bizarre phone call off and I left it at that thinking everything was booked after I had given my name, email and phone number.Today I called ahead (over an hour before) to ask if we could arrive earlier as we were running ahead of schedule only to be told that there wasn't a booking under my name. At first I wasn't worried because in my initial call two weeks ago this lady seemed to garble my name back at me so I presumed that maybe there would be a booking under a similar sounding name. However, it turned out that there wasn't even a booking at the time I had been told! Even more confusingly, I was told that the only bookings they had were at 2pm and 2:30pm when I had been told not to book at 2:30pm because the kitchens would be closed. Not only that but I was then offered no solution other than a table outside which was unsuitable for my group which contained an elderly person, not to mention the cold as IT'S NOVEMBER!Overall, I am so very disappointed with the service. What makes it worse is that if I had not happened to call ahead, I would have only found out that there was no table when we arrived. In the future I will avoid phoning to book anything. I expect this complaint to be taken into consideration in the future when dealing with customers' booking over the phone - get a better system in place or have someone who knows what they're doing checking the details.

My wife had eaten here before, pre Covid, with a "ladies who lunch" group, and been very satisfied. We turned up for lunch without a booking but were warmly welcomed and quickly seated in the light and airy restaurant. Itwas interesting to note that the restaurant and the bar area were tree quarters full on a dull Wednesday in October which means that they must be doing something right. The menu is exactly the right size, with enough variety but not so much as to provoke suspicion of cloning. There were three specials as well as the regular menu and I was almosttempted by the game pie and may well be next time if it is on and I have foregone breakfast. In this instance I had the haddock and chips. The light and crisp batter suggested it had been made with fizzy water and the chips seemed to have been double cookes and were lightly salted. My wife was similarly happy with herr scampi. Simple choices but usually a bell weather of the care taken in the kitchen as many tend to relax on these staples and reserve their attention for the more complex- and expensive. My only niggle was that the tartare sauce was a bit tart for my taste. When we go again, which will be in the not too distant future, if the game pie is not on I will try either the bang bang chicken ot the oversized Boris burger!

This is my third visit and this was my most satisfactory!! Service is pretty good. Food is satisfactory and over priced!! I didn’t pay!! Gammon too salty but lovely eggs!! Crayfish Salad was a hit; well presented and enjoyed. Haddock a little watery. Too many chips and they didn’t look authentic. Sticky Toffee Pudding portion was enormous and I suspect, as documented in an earlier review, had been bought in!! We got loads for £7. It wasn’t very refined in presentation but was very comforting on the stomach.

My visit before was admittedly better. This visit however, I honestly feel an average review sums it up.. everything was just average. The menu from appearance is very good for a pub, though I feel they strive for quantity over quality. The service although polite and welcoming, the knowledge of the products were poor. The quality of the Ales really were not good either, drinkable... but not at its best! The venue was lovely and the procedures in place to make it Covid safe were very good.

Called in for lunch on a Sunday. The food was good but overpriced. We had to ask for the table to be cleaned, but the staff were in general very pleasant. ( apart from the middle aged one with the short blonde hair and the bad smell under her nose ! ) Slightly off putting, that whilst eating, locals were sat at the bar in work clothing, effing and jeffing, and If we had known that the pub was dog friendly, we would probably have not gone in.

The food at The Crown has maintained the brilliant standard it’s always had, but I’m sad to say the service has not been great over my last few visits. My first visit was within the first two weeks of it re-opening post lockdown, it took a good 40 minutes for a drinks order to be taken which was worrying considering the restriction on how long tables can be occupied for as stated when booking. The drinks (and food) aren’t exactly what I would call cheap at The Crown, and so when our gin and tonics arrived without garnish and had very minimal ice they looked a bit sad. I was a bit surprised. The waitress seemed flustered when we mentioned it and didn’t really seem to know why no garnishes weren’t in the drinks as described. We didn’t push it and didn’t take huge issue with any of this as it was fully understandable under the circumstances and I think the level of staff had been reduced. I’ve been twice since this occasion, and the food has consistently been great but the service does let it down. Waiting times too long and flustered staff. I fully appreciate we have to take our own drinks off a tray, but then the tray (which was pretty dirty) was put down on our table and the waitress just walked off and left it there. Felt it sort of defeated the object of this new system in place. The waitress nor anybody else ever came back for it so we moved it on to the empty table next to us ourselves, which perhaps was wrong of us but it was really big and we couldn’t fit everything on the table with it there. Also a bottle of white wine was ordered, which did come in a bucket with ice but had clearly not been refrigerated as when poured it was very warm. I’m no wine snob but for £26 I’d expect it to have been chilled as it doesn’t taste the same warm. All in all, the food is genuinely brilliant and that’s why I’ve returned as much as I have recently. The pub is lovely and I do hope the service issues are just down to these really horrible times, as I did really love coming but think I’ll wait a while before coming back again for now.

Visited on Wednesday evening, didn't get off to a great start when the young man who was greeting customers at the door and was about to show us to our table noticed that someone he knew had come in behind us so left us standing to have a chat. A young lady asked us what we were doing as we were left in limbo and we were eventually seated.Took our drinks order without having to be asked but from that point onwards it seemed like were invisible. Had to ask to order food, had to ask for desserts, had to ask for bill (which they don't tell you you have to go to the bar to get) and the service was generally poor as there wasn't a specific person in charge to stop the young people working there chatting amongst themselves.Food eventually arrived and the Boris burger I had was probably the driest burger I'd ever had the misfortune to eat. Normally I would expect someone to pop by after about 5 minutes and ask if everything was ok but this didn't happen so didn't have the opportunity to question the cooking and at this point I was absolutely starving so would have eaten a scabby horse given the chance. My son had the Steak which he said was nice, and my wife and daughter both had the gammon steaks which looked ok. However, given the prices of the establishment I was expecting more. This was Wetherspoons food at Fat Duck prices. My son had the chocolate brownie dessert, which again, at £7, I was expecting something half decent but once again it was standard fare which you can get at 101 other places for half the cost.

Had a table booked last week for special anniversary. Unfortunately the weather meant we couldn't celebrate as no tables free inside for those booked outside. Rebooked for tonight but only table available on rebooking was the big one near bar.Very noisy, music and walkthrough for toilets etc, arrows not being followed with people wandering around everywhere. Sadly not enough parking as always so popular, but blocked in with just inches to get out of car park after meal.Pleasant staff, took food and drink order. I had specific request for plain meal but was not as requested and sadly an awful lot of waste as just too much food overall. Good quality and great to take advantage of the eat out offer but no follow up from staff how everything was.I will return when things quieten down as we had a fabulous evening a few weeks ago.

Visited yesterday (12/08) as we were looking to try somewhere local we hadn’t visited before. Took advantage of the Eat Out Help Out scheme.Booked a table for 16.00, when we arrived we were placed in the restaurant only metres away from the kitchen and stone baked pizza oven. It was extremely hot where we were sat. We asked the waitress if we could be placed outside but were told all the tables were fully booked. 3 out of the 16 or so tables were occupied at the time and some hadn’t been used by the time we left at 18.00.As for the service we were sat at 16.00, drinks and orders were placed fairly quick. Starter was good. We then waited nearly 30mins for our main to arrive. Finished our mains and our empty plates must of sat there for at least 20mins until they were taken and deserts ordered. In total a 3 course meal took just over 2 hours from arrival to leaving. Food was good, but very disappointed with the service provided.....

Visited the Crown today with my other half (where we have eaten many times before) to find standards have dropped massively. We both decided to order half a roasted lemon & thyme chicken roast dinner off the Sunday menu. The food arrived fairly quickly, so no complaints on that front, however, the food it self was a great disappointment. The meal consisted of 1 chicken leg of a very small size and minimal meat, one burnt Yorkshire pudding, a few small roast potatoes and a few drops of gravy. A small serving dish was also bought out for two people which contained some bland broccoli, carrots and leeks, which looked like they had been slung into the dish. Zero seasoning or flavour to the meal what-so-ever. There was no opportunity to ask for more gravy as we were never asked or approached by staff to see whether our food was ok. Even after we finished eating, our plates were not cleared and still had no opportunity to voice our concerns. Considering this roast cost £15 per plate, I’d expect to see what we were served in a school dinner. The pub was quiet and therefore extremely easy to hear the conversations being had by staff behind the bar. Whilst out on a Sunday evening, I don’t need to hear about the personal lives of staff and their negative opinions of other customers. Very unprofessional. We’re sad to see the standard has dropped so much as we have been frequent visitors over the past few years. We have never had an issue paying the prices for the food we have been served as it has always been enjoyable with no complaints.I hope this isn’t a common issue and simply a one off.

They were even kind enough to let us put up some decorations to celebrate. Would thoroughly recommend The Crown and love eating here. Thank you again for a wonderful evening

We popped in on a Friday lunchtime as we were stuck in a traffic jam outside. Very nice pub and restaurant although the restaurant area is a bit bland and canteen like. It was good being able to see the chefs at work though. Food was very nice but I think that next time - yes there will be a next time - we will sit in the pub area for a bit more atmosphere.

Visited last night and a few Saturdays ago, food was amazing I tried the bang bang chicken and beef burger on my visits and both were divine the pizzas looked fab too as well as the specials board. Service was good too had some of the same waitresses on my visits who were eager to help and friendly as were the bar staff. Could find no fault and will be back for another visit soon.

We got recommended this pub whilst in the area. Upon first impressions the pub looked clean and welcoming. It's unfortunate that who I believe at the time was the manager decided to relieve himself of duties and involve himself in some in depth chatter whilst leaving one very shy member of staff upon the bar just as people were beginning to come in. I ordered some drinks and took a menu.

We were told on seating in the restaurant that they had problems with the gas..they took our order quite simple requests steak egg chips and fish and chips. When our food was brought to the table we were told sorry there weren’t many chips but the chef will make some more when he could !!! We advised don’t worry as we wanted the meal at the same time.

A Saturday night visit with friends was a bad experience as the staff had no control of a bunch of very sweary local louts. Lest there be any doubt, we are talking about every sentence punctuated with 'f' and 'c' expletives, and nothing done about it.

What was going on!!! The whole pub seemed to have been taken over by men all trying to out shout each other, this must have been some sort of club meeting. The very busy pub and the erratic ordering of food meant that we had to 20 minutes to even order our food. We had reserved a table but that had little sway in ordering. Food was quite good and this made up for the initial disappointment of slow ordering. Check out this place before arranging to have a meal there

We were pleased that we had been recommended to pre-book a table - it gets very busy on a Friday evening. The prawn curry was excellent, but I was disappointed in the Partridge and Bacon Pie (from the daily specials board) - beneath the golden pie crust was no solid meat, just a (tasty!) creamy broth with a few small particles of meat. It was impossible to eat with knife & fork - I had to ask for a spoon - not quite fulfilling my expectations of a "Pie"

There were 15 of us, we all had Starters & mains, some us had deserts. The starters were horrible, the vegetables were raw, The Christmas pudding was raw. I won't be coming back to The Crown. The staff were slow & only brought out 1 plate @ a time. My eldest nephew got his desert first while the staff left a 5 year old, 4 year old & a 2 year wait for there deserts. The staff didn't care

Had a lovely meal here. Amazingly clean, plenty of room. Very nice. The meal and service are excellent. My only quibble is that the ‘roast potatoes’ are tiny minute cubes, fried, not roasted, this is part of the Christmas menu. However, if you asked me if I would come here again, the answer is a resounding yes. We will be back again soon to try the normal evening menu. Thank you.

Booked for an evening meal and unfortunately were seated in bar area by main door. Table was dingy and very cold with door constantly opening and closing. Asked if we could be moved but as well as the restaurant the whole bar had places laid for dinners. It seems this establishment has gone downhill choosing greed over customer service. We left and ate elsewhere locally. Won’t be rushing back.

An excellent recently refurbished pub that does fantastic meals and has friendly and helpful service and probably the reason they had to make it bigger inside is because of the very tasty meals, people like to eat here.

I visited on the 26th Oct. Was served at the bar by a young man who told me number of our table after asking but no offer to show us to table. Had to ask a waiter who appeared to be very young and inexperienced, rabbit in headlights! He moved us to a table and then came back and asked us to move to a different table with no explanation given. He came back to take our order, he was very nervous, no please or thank you. Menu very limited, where are the goats cheese or Camembert starters??? Burger very greasy, partridge pie for two with very few vegetables. Our young waiter did not once ask for drink orders or if our meal was good or offer water. If you are going to charge high prices don’t use inexperienced young staff. Won’t come again

Having not visited the crown for 3 years we decided to go for a meal with friends on Saturday evening. The menu was quite limited come after to other pub restaurants, whilst acceptable the food was OK but nothing special. Two of us had steak which was tough, unfortunately it will probably be another 3 years before we visit again.

3 of us popped in, personally I'd never been here before, it was just after 12 on a Saturday, but none of us were sure if it was open or not, no doors open, no signs, I asked a chap at the side who said it was, so maybe could do with showing your open a bit easier. For food we ordered the bang bang chicken, the ham egg and chips and a sandwich with chips, the service was prompt, and the food was very nice, maybe just a touch expensive but not extortionate, we sat in the garden at the rear which was large and in extremely good condition, a nice Saturday lunch, thank you.

Usually love this place buf have noticed they have become a little complacent recently with the food and the menu. Specials board doesnt change anymore so isnt really a specials board. Food is a little pricey for what it is now.Additional yorkshire puds can't be added to Sunday roasts as apparently there is not enough of them. It's usually how it starts to go downhill for pubs so need to be careful when compromising quality and service.

Had Sunday lunch here with family. The pub has a nice atmosphere and the food was really good. Had the Sunday lunch followed by the biggest Eton Mess desert that I have ever seen. It was also one of the nicest that I have tasted. I did think maybe the food was a bit pricey in comparison to other pubs around however it was very tasty. One bad point is that there was glasses on the table for water but they were stained (possibly from the dishwasher) they just didn't look attractive.
