The Crown is a proper old fashioned pub but with a modern twist. The landlord is so helpful and genuinely trying to make everyone's visit enjoyable. Had a private party there tonight and everyone commented on how enjoyable the night was. Hats off to Tim and the staff.

Booked a Sunday lunch here with wife, plus doggo in tow (checked ahead to ensure it’s dog-friendly). Upon entering we found the interior rather disconcerting, it’s not a cosy traditional pub dining experience, it has more of a school refectory ambience. But we were immediately greeted by the (apparently, based on reviews) new manager, Tim. Very attentive he was too, we got seated in no time even though we turned up a bit earlier than planned. Orders for drinks and food were efficient (I appreciated the time taken to run the on-tap range of ales/lagers). The mains were standard Sunday beef roasts, with a shared side of cauliflower & cheese. These were both good, the beef in particular was good quality I thought. Desserts were definitely a let-down. Sticky toffee ‘loaf’ (new term to me, usually ‘pudding’) was indeed a loaf-shape, and it was pretty bland, even with a dollop of ice cream. Once the ice cream was gone I could not finish the loaf, too dry. The apple crumble with custard. Hmm, all I could think was how Gordon Ramsay would have a hissy fit, the presentation was so poor. The sample I tasted was ok, but still. Didn’t stay for coffee, my wife drew a line at that after the dessert debacle. Totalled £55 and change, which was thought reasonable. All in all, the experience was ok. Service was efficient and staff were friendly. Work on those desserts guys!

No milk for tea, no people, my wife’s lunch arrived without coleslaw as advertised, mine never arrived despite reassurances after she already finished, gave up, after 30 mins, passed on a refund and left. Who knows what happened to the burger, no one else in the pub at 13.00, used to be great food and atmosphere. Sad and heading in wrong direction.

I've been there twice after work with my new boss and work colleagues after the end of our working week. Really friendly Landlord and regulars who like to greet you and have a chat. Couldn't really ask for more than that to be honest. Carpark spaces seem to be all used up considering the amount of customers though. But, yes I really appreciate the friendly staff and atmosphere and am looking forward to going there many more times.

Glowing reviews, a Wed to Sat menu (including a kids menu) and statements on the website of, "Our cosy spot boasts an inviting atmosphere where locals and visitors alike gather for exceptional food and a warm welcome." and "...offering freshly prepared menus of traditional pub food, delicious sharing platters, hearty mains, and tempting desserts..." led our party of 5 (one child) here for an early Mother's Day meal on Sat 9th Mar. However, we were all left totally underwhelmed by the whole experience! It all started with the menus. We weren't offered any! When I then asked for them the waiter arrived with a scrap of paper with a limited number of options, a limited number of meals for each option and NO KIDS MENU at all! We had to order a smaller portion of the limited menu already offered for my grandson. We decided to persevere though as my grandson (age 2) was in need of food and it would have been a big upheaval to find another place to eat at that point. The meals were delivered within a reasonable time but they did not reflect what the many reviews and website had said at all. The chicken burgers came with no salad (or any other filling) whatsoever, the lasagne meals were small portions as were the chips and the salad with them was literally two pieces of lettuce, two slices of cucumber and one small wedge of tomato! I can't remember ever eating out and having that awful silence and everybody looking at each other like we did then. We were committed by then though, if only for the sake of my grandson who was tucking into his Spag Bol (please take note staff, do not place a hot dish directly in front of a toddler, as you did today). Sauces were offered when really they should just have been given as we all had chips but when they arrived there were just two small ramekins among the four of us. We all ate our meals and the food was okay but it was definitely NOT great as we had hoped. Eventually the Landlord came over to ask if everything was okay at which point I took the opportunity to say NO! However, despite Tim being a nice enough bloke all he could say was sorry. His explanation was that he was putting all his effort into the next day (Mother's Day) and that recent Saturdays had been quiet, thus the limited menu. When I asked for a desert menu he stated that they didn't have one, despite the website stating otherwise (as quoted above). Nothing else was offered in recompense, as if we were at fault for picking the wrong day! I'd had a brief email discussion with Tim over the booking, as there is nowhere to mention the number of children on the booking form, and he never took the opportunity to mention anything about a reduced menu because of recent weeks or because of the plans for Sunday. We paid the bill and left, thoroughly disappointed. Tim's parting words were that he hoped to see us again on a Sunday maybe, I believe. However, he'd done nothing to appease our displeasure so it's highly unlikely we'll be back. You really dropped the ball on this one Tim and what's most disappointing is that you failed to recognise the situation and rectify it. We're not fussy people with huge expectations and it would have been easy for you to do something more than just say sorry and give excuses. Hopefully you'll learn from this experience and maybe, one day (I'll wager it would be a Sunday) we'll return. Lastly, I've NEVER been to a pub or restaurant that didn't serve desserts! Very odd indeed? Regards Richard

I saw a really good recommendation on Next Door App about this pubs roast dinners so thought we would try it out for Mothers Day. We don’t usually bother going out for roasts because they’re usually disappointing but we braved it and the whole family was really impressed. It was a proper home cooked roast, good portion sizes and delicious. Very reasonably priced & really friendly service as well so I would highly recommend visiting.

Lovely new manager, breath of fresh air, pub was very clean and bright. Sunday Roast was average, I had the lamb which was delicious, but disappointed with the selection of vegetables, counted 2 carrots and a mountain of cabbage. I ordered a side of cauliflower cheese which was huge and could have shared with my husband. The roast potatoes were not good! Only ate half of one, they tasted undercooked with a funny flavour. Was disappointed to see, there was no dessert menu, just ice cream and cake! Who has cake on a Sunday roast/menu, should be something like apple pie with custard etc. Staff? Took us 5 minutes to order 4 drinks, bar staff were very slow and not very knowledgeable, disappointing there was no pink gin or pino on offer! Not only were these bar staff slow, but I thought totally inappropriately dressed and scruffy, one wearing flip flops! Also would be nice to receive a smile from the staff!!! I really hope that this feedback comes as a positive criticism as I would love to see this country pub thrive again.

I sent an enquiry through the pub website on 14th Sept and I've still not had the courtesy of a reply. It's now 21st September. Because of the lack of response from The Crown, we found somewhere else and had a delicious meal...that establishment will definitely be getting our repeat business! Why offer a 'contact us' online form when no-one bothers to reply? We like to support local businesses, especially in these difficult times. The Crown must be doing well if they can afford to ignore enquiries from potential customers! We were a sizeable group too...sorry but it's your loss!

Nice looking pub with garden and dog friendly and that’s the end of the good experience. Our lunch consisted of raw white chips, thick fatty rubbery tough slices of slimy ham plus two eggs each. The eggs were edible. Total cost for lunch of four eggs 1 glass of Merlot and 1 lager shandy and eye watering £35. When my husband was asked if we were enjoying our meal he did say it was the worst ham egg and chips we’d ever eaten. The wonderful response from the Landlady was :“There’s ways of making a complaint” and “That’s not what everybody else says” So forewarned is forearmed - I would not eat or drink here ever again and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless you like a bad taste in the mouth afterwards.

Popped into this pub for a spot of lunch. Spot being the operative world. I ordered Caesar salad with garlic bread. See photo. I waited a good 20 minutes for what can only be described as a very disappointing portion for a dinner. The garlic bread was 3 strips of garlic bread. Not a half slice. The chicken was over cooked and rubbery and the salad was very limited as was the Parmesan cheese. It was very sparse and certainly not £11.00 worth. It could have been so easily better. Even if you added more lettuce and Parmesan. It was appalling. I had to get up and leave and normally I would compliment on the food. But this was impossible to do so. Robbed is how I feel! Sorry the Crown but you are a pub not a fine dinning experience. Also had to wait nearly 25 minutes. I picked the salad as I thought it would be quick and a good hearty portion for £11.00.

The house merlot was perfectly drinkable. The service is friendly and very efficient. My friend is disabled and the could not have been more solicitous. We had a Saturday night takeaway. 27/03/2021. My husband had bbq ribs chicken and chips with coleslaw and I had chicken & leek pie with chips and peas. Both really delicious. We were eligible for free delivery and the food arrived exactly when we had requested it. Highly recommended thiis service and will visit the pub in person when covid restrictions allow. Thank you Marie we enjoyed the whole experience.

This is a beautiful boutique cake shop in Old Welwyn, with the most delicious cupcakes, cakes, sandwiches and afternoon teas. It's run by an absolutely lovely local lady who makes the most amazing bakes! The shop is really pretty and quaint, with beautiful crockery and a lovely friendly vibe in the centre of Old Welwyn. The shop has a fantastic range of cakes and treats, including options for vegan, vegetarian and gluten free, which is brilliant. I often admire their celebration, birthday and wedding cakes online as well - they look amazing (maybe I need to get married again ;) ) Will definitely be back!

Lovely feel in conservatory. Friendly. Tasty lunch - but be prepared for a quite long wait.
