Lovely pub on the base of the Sugar Loaf. Staff were lovely and accommodating for us arriving late after our walk took longer than expected. Great food at a reasonable price and excellent service in the cosy pub. Plenty of parking out back and a great base point for a walk up the hills. Look forward to returning.

Pre-Christmas family Sunday lunch and it didn’t disappoint. Despite being very busy, service and food were excellent. A beautiful pea and mist soup to start, followed by a beautiful roast beef, perfectly cooked accompanied with plenty of veg and gravy. Really is one of the best pubs for Sunday lunch

Great country pub run with care and good ethos towards staff. Good food in a rural setting. Cosy inside with a centre room fireplace. Dogs allowed at the bar. Parking round the back. Food was great and a good selection of deserts. We've come back on a number of occasions and have always been welcome and enjoyed ourselves.

Just a great family run and friendly place to call in to either during or after a walk in the surrounding mountains. Really varied breakfast menu, excellent Miners Breakfast and superb coffee. A wood burning stove simply adds to the comfort level in this classic old pub/restaurant.

Booked here due to reviews when looking for somewhere in the area that took dogs. This pub didn't disappoint. Beautifully decorated for Christmas inside and out. Nice and warm inside and was sat next to the fire place, which our dog loved. Service was warm and friendly and didn't feel forced. Food was delivered in good time and the beef and bubble was beautifully tender. Finished with a sticky toffee pudding and partner had the bread and butter. Both were to die for. Spoke to the owner and was told they are almost finished building there accommodation cabins. Will definitely book here when next walking in the area.

Nice pub, friendly staff and very attentive, the food is good and fairly priced, we visited the pub on three consecutive nights, very happy to return if we stay again in Abergavenny, the only criticism is that we were disappointed to find the same thick gravy in three very different meats dishes, Lamb Shanck, Steak and Ale Pie and Crown of Roast Turkey, to be fair one of best Chicken Liver Patè

Went to celebrate family 80th birthday, starters poor.crispy beef tasted deep fried flour, duck starter not up to much The “fish of the day” turned out to be farmed salmon….. very disappointing as would never ordinarily think of farmed salmon as edible Whist the service was well meaning there was a significant time-lapse for all diners to have a plate in-front of them All in all very dissatisfied with the food as the menu did not deliver anything like good pub grub let alone anything honest/special. Shame!

We normally treat ourselves to a meal or two here every holiday. Unfortunately we're only here for a few days this year & have run out of time. We stopped by for some drinks after climbing the Sugarloaf mountain & found the pub absolutely rammed & thriving. The new owners have added a dining extension onto the front patio which must be a boon in this grim summer. I could tell the new team were a slick operation. The attention to the food order on the next table was a lesson in how it should be done. Perfectionists! We can't wait to eat with you next holiday! I almost forgot VERY DOG FRIENDLY 🐕 😁👍

We were recommended this place by a cafe in Abergavenny at the weekend and decided to pop by for lunch on Monday before heading home. What a recommendation!! We pulled in to a packed car park and fortunate to find a spot. We were a little worried at not being able to get some food, but a lovely blonde girl behind the bar was able to find us a table. We were informed it would be a little wait due to how busy it was. However, within 20 minutes we had a burger and fish and chips in front of us. Both the food and service were great considering how busy the place was. After lunch we found a table outside and enjoyed the view to the Skirrid. Thoroughly recommend

Staying locally for the weekend from Cambridge so I had done my homework for somewhere for lunch. All looked good on social media. Popped in on Saturday for a quick drink to scope the atmosphere and was instantly turned off by a guy in the garden talking too loudly about himself for all to hear. You know the type. Not to worry, the place looks good and he won’t be back tomorrow, good signs. Sunday, good welcome, staff are friendly, nice menu, cheap prices, this was going well. Ordered 3 Oysters of which one was slightly concerning but down it went with crossed fingers. A Roast Beef was delivered for a main course (along with a Pork) in record time (which set off major alarm bells) suggesting it’s sitting somewhere under a lamp. This causes the potatoes to become hard on the bottom and difficult to eat but the main issue was the gravy, which not only was sweet and sickly but covered (and I do mean covered) my plate. I want to pour my own gravy! So I cannot comment on the taste of the meat but it looked a nice pink from what I could see so I can only assume it would have been good. Followed up with a Chocolate Cheesecake with oddly no biscuit base, so it’s only a cake. Another let down. Left feeling disappointed and that we had missed an opportunity to sit back and enjoy a bottle of wine after our meal. Everything is rushed and not quite there yet. Maybe with time things will improve. Great spot for a drink currently, if you happen to walk by.

We've eaten here twice in the last couple of weeks. First was an excellent Sunday lunch. Then mid-week we had a superb rib-eye steak and steak pie. The stock with the pie was delicious. Also a choice of three well kept ales and fine wines. Large car park to the rear. I should add that although they do online booking, it's worth phoning if you'd like to eat there at short notice. We were hoping to visit one evening this week but it looked fully booked until later on. A brief phone call and we were booked in immediately.

Stopped by for lunch. Nice, dog friendly pub. Good food - I am often disappointed by arancini in the UK but here they were great. Very nice squid ink pasta special. The steak and ale was good, especially if you like it to be strong on the "ale" side, although the vegetables it was supposed to be served with were quite a bit late. But otherwise the service was good.

We visited with friends for a midday meal. The place was deserted at 11.30 am but soon filled up and is clearly very popular. The service was warm and attentive from a lovely blonde lady, and we were so pleased that dogs were allowed. The sun room (dog friendly) was somewhat sparsely decorated and felt a bit like an echoey garage; a few soft furnishings could help improve the space and the acoustics. We found most items on the main menu to be at a decent price point, and the drinks were very reasonable (£6 for a glass of prosecco is excellent compared to other restaurants). We ordered a large selection of starters to share, and they were delicious: the artisan bread and the burrata especially. There weren't as many non-fish options as we would have hoped, leaving little choice for the husband who can't eat fish. It was chicken or exceedingly pricy steak (32). I ordered the Lobster Linguine, which i found to be a little too rich: it was very dark, presumably from the use of the darker lobster meat in the sauce? The meat in the half shell of lobster itself was sweet enough, but i couldn't eat much of the pasta, especially as there were occasional tiny shards of shell. For £28 I confess I was disappointed as I'm used to a fresher, lighter sauce. We also thought it was quite cheeky to charge £7 for a pudding and then £1.50 on top for a scoop of ice cream. I've never come across that before! The location was gorgeous; right on the English/Welsh border, ample seating outside, and very cosy spaces within where it wasn't dog friendly. I would eat here again.

Visited tonight for a meal out as was on holiday. The rustic appearance was lovely however the cleanliness left a bit to be desired as there was quite a few cobwebs about, although most of them on ceilings so admittedly hard to reach. The starters were delicious, I had the aubergine Parmesan and my partner had the tian. Good portion size, tasted fantastic couldn't fault it. The mains, my partner had the rack of lamb and enjoyed it. I had the linguine and to be honest didn't enjoy it, not any fault of the chefs just not to my taste. It sounded nice on the menu I just personally didn't like it. When the male server came to take our dishes away, to which mine was basically still full, I thought it a little remiss that he didn't ask whether we enjoyed the meal as I would have brought it up then. However I didn't want to cause a fuss so decided not to bring it up though it was disappointing. The female server was faultless. Very friendly, chatty, polite. The deserts were good too. Overall the meal was pleasant even though I didn't like my main.

What a find this place is. Booked a table for our wedding anniversary and from the moment we walked in it didn’t disappoint. Lovely welcome from a young man behind the bar who also served us our meals. Some younger staff being trained which was great to see with the trainer being attentive and understanding to the new guys. Food was exceptional, so many lovely flavours, it was a joy to be there. Slight criticism was the bottle of white wine was served room temp in an ice bucket. This would never get cold in the time we would take to drink it but we didn’t say anything as the team were obviously trying their best and the wine was lovely anyway. Overall a lovely few hours in a gem of a place that we will definitely return too often I would think. Please don’t hesitate to come here, Well done all 👏

We both ordered traditional Sunday lunch(one pork, one beef) with an excellent prawn starter. There were plenty of staff all of whom were pleasant and willing to please. The rice on the salmon sushi especially is really hard and dry. This only happened when the rice was kept in the fridge for more than a day or two losing the moisture in the rice. We absolutely loved this pub! So much so we visited 4 times during our 4 day stay in Abergavenny! We sampled drinks , breakfast , lunch and dinner! ALL of the food was absolutely gorgeous! And I’m fussy!! The pub has such a great vibe and we always managed to bag a seat in the dog friendly area next to the log fire which was perfect! All of the staff were brilliant and so friendly . The food choice was brilliant and I can’t sing its praises enough. I had the salmon pasta with vodka and I enjoyed it so much I wanted to go back the next day and have it again! When we got there the next day , on Friday, it was only just gone 5 so they were still serving the afternoon menu but we were really chuffed as we saw they had fish & chips and we’d been craving that too so both ordered that and it was one of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had, including the gorgeous homemade mushy peas! We sampled the traditional Welsh breakfasts this morning but were also tempted by several other dishes on the breakfast menu . My god, they were gorgeous! A generous portion size which we love as we’re both big eaters and absolutely divine, you could tell all the ingredients were locally sourced and so full of flavour! Even the Americanos and cream were perfect! 👌 We will be back again to experience your absolute gem of a pub in the summer and hopefully get to dine Al fresco in your lovely outdoor seating area…..possibly with a wood fired pizza from the oven we spotted ….? Thank you Nick , Amy and all of your lovely staff 😃❤️🥰

It was beautifully presented and all the dishes tasted so good. Would have no hesitation recommending The Crown to anyone.

What a fantastic find whilst having a few days away with the family. The food was very delicious and service impeccable.

Nice food, drink and atmosphere. Kindly given a table as needed to catch a train so gentleman who made reservation was very happy with this as he needed the table sooner. Would have given more stars if waiting staff had not served another party who turned up after us and said to them "I'll serve you first as you're in a hurry", whilst we were made to wait so didn't have time for dessert as we had to had a train to catch. Very disappointing service.

Possibly the best pizza in South Wales! But, unusually, served in a pub that has kept its friendly local atmosphere - you can still just pop in for a beer and/or a cocktail (the Expresso Martini is one of the best around). Plus a beneficial rewards scheme which gives you passive benefits whilst you enjoy great food, great drinks and great service - it's a 'win, win'. If you haven't tried The Towpath then add it to your To Do list!

First take away from Catch 22 and very impressed. From ordering through to the welcome received when we went to pick up, was faultless. The quality of food was much better than any fish and chips we have had in Abergavenny.
