Lovely place with a good atmosphere and selection of ales and the usual drinks. The staff are really friendly and the service is great. A simple menu with good variety, well prepared and quick. The gents toilets were by far the nicest I've seen in any pub - clean, smelt fresh, all facilities functional, and nicely decorated. Yes - a well kept and decorated men's pub loo!! Unheard of!

I used to throughly enjoy The Crown, but over the last year I noticed the quality, service and atmosphere decline dramatically. Today I found out why - it’s changed owners and is now under the guidance of Breakspear. Before, a South African couple ran the pub and it was one of the best places in Reading. I was met with a bubbly atmosphere, classy low-rhythm jazz music, a menu that offered variety and intrigue, plus a sense of originality I couldn’t find elsewhere. Now I enter and am met with no atmosphere, mainstream pop music, a severe lack of service and food presentation that I couldn’t help criticising. The warm bread board - yeah the warm cheesy loaf is nice, but the centre was still cold and the accompanying smoked/roasted garlic was served cold. Come on, inject some personality and warmth into it, at least shove the smoked garlic into the oven at the same time as the loaf to unleash the smell and make it a little softer. The seating? Yeah, sit customers on a cold metal table next to the opening of the rowdy, loud kitchen. I’m terribly sad to have lost the personality of this place - a team who, before it changed hands, actually seemed to care from all angles. Instant points to change? Get the atmosphere right and change the music. Put on some nice acoustic or jazz music, it makes a big difference. Your food - more quality control. Your service? I know it takes time, but build a team that care. It’s hard to find good staff, but keep pressing on and weed out the people who pull it down or, better yet, give them a chance to change before doing so. I’ll come back in a couple of years, but for those expecting the same vibes as before it changes hands, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Great pub in an unassuming village. We were on a walk and chanced upon this place. It looked very welcoming so we stepped in. The interior is very large with three areas for guests. The bar serves the usual branded lager and also some ale. The seating is very comfortable along the windows at the front. After a couple of drinks we decided to extend our stay and ordered a meal. Usual pub stuff served elegantly. And it was tasty. I'm sure I'll come again.

Nice local pub on "The Street" street at the heart of Swallowfield village, an easy half-hour cycle ride or 15 minute drive from Lower Earley, Reading. Small but good selection of real ales, plus all the other usual drinks. Nice range of good quality food, in generous portions, and at a fair prices. Visited on a quiet Saturday lunchtime, and service was friendly & excellent. Probably much busier with local customers in the evenings, of course. Good clean toilets. Sunny, roadside seating out front (fairly quiet road & #7 bus to Reading station) and there was also a beer garden at the side/back, along with a reasonable size parking area. Highly recommended for a relaxed lunch & drinks on a sunny Saturday afternoon!

The welcome, too, was friendly and genuine. Our meal was excellent - good food, all apparently freshly cooked; portions if anything rather too large (particularly the piri-piri chicken).
