The days of drinking a good pint of Bass in a CAMRA listed heritage interior are sadly gone. The 2021 remodelling replaced the cosy lounge bar with an expensive "Uruguayan grill" with an emphasis on cocktails, which unsurprisingly failed to work in this off-town centre location with no parking. We're left with a strange hybrid to which three successive managers have struggled to attract the local community back. The rear yard (hardly a garden) is pleasant enough place when it's dry to consume industrial lagers, if you like that sort of thing, but asking for real ale gets short shrift. The Keyford neighbourhood group's request for traditional pub food has been ignored and you will go hungry if you want anything more healthy than burgers or processed chicken. A token vegetarian option is awful. Don't even think about asking for a salad. I can't see this lovely historic pub flourishing again until it recovers its role as a focal point of the Keyford community, building up a loyal local following by meeting their needs, rather than trying to imitate bars elsewhere.

Very sneaky! The sign fooled my wife completely, I was literally dragged there kicking and screaming because she thought see saw the words "Free Wine!"

The Crown re-opened a month ago and I've visited every Friday night. It's a lovely, local pub with a great atmosphere. Last night I had my first bite to eat in there - it was a chicken burger, but not simply a piece of chicken in bread bun. It was simply the most delicious meal in a bun that I've ever eaten in my life....and I'm 72 years of age 👍🙏🎉

On arrival the landlord was very welcoming. The choice of drinks was good. We only had a few drinks before moving on.

We've just discovered the Crown Inn, such a brilliant pub with loads of personality. It's really cosy inside with great and unusual decor. A large courtyard garden with sparky lights everywhere. There is a restaurant on the other side of the building that serves the most delicious Thai food. Rich, who owns the place is the best host, and looked after us. Highly recommend the Crown.

We can to The Crown on one of their Thai nights - currently Friday and Saturday evenings. I had the vegan curry, which was excellent. Very fresh vegetables and superbly spiced. Cooked to order. My partner had the king prawn dish, which she very highly rated. Service was fast and very friendly. Great prices. The dining area is very wood based, and the rest of the pub somewhat more relaxed. A nice outdoor area and dog friendly. Worth booking in advance. Dog friendly. Please note that kitchen changed a few months ago, so the reviews here that talk about steak are almost certainly out of date

First time ever in The Crown and loved it. Really cool pub with lovely staff. I tried their Thai food which is about to be a regular thing and it was lush. I pushed myself to try something different and glad I did. 100% will be back

I called in for a pint Sunday afternoon. I ordered my pint and went to pay but unfortunately my payment didn't go through. Richard the landlord said pay me next time you are in. He hadn't met me before and even one of his local customers offered to pay. Thank you Richard see you soon The decor was amazing

Held out 25th wedding anniversary upstairs in the function room. Perfect space for around 34 people seated to eat followed by dancing. We took our own Bluetooth speaker but some disco lights were provided. Venue is free to hire with the expectation that guests purchase drinks at the bar downstairs which worked well. We were able to provide our own food and had use of a small kitchen. We were able arrange and decorate the hall as we liked on the proviso we left it as we found it. Plenty of tables and chairs available. Richard . The landlord was super accommodating and helpful, as were the other staff on duty. Would recommend as a Frome venue- just need to advise guests on parking as this is not readily available.

Great Sunday lunch with the grandsons. Good value, good portions with seconds for the children. Welcoming landlord and efficient serving staff with a very good chef. Good ales, busy atmosphere, worth booking as gets busy on a Sunday. Will certainly return.

Delicious tasty Christmas menu with friends with good alternatives to the standard Christmas meal. The celeriac, hazelnuts and truffle soup starter was gorgeous (though helps that I like garlic). Lovely moist steak cooked sousvide with crisp chips for main. All polished off with pear sticky toffee pudding for £30.00 each plus our wine bill. The service was friendly, prompt and informative. Definitely worth another visit.

We went to the Crown for a family celebration, taking 8 adults, 3 children and a baby, and what a good choice it was. We had the best Sunday lunch I have ever had in a pub. Everything concerning the food was spot on perfect. The service was excellent and the surroundings very pleasant. Richard not only served wonderful food, but came round with extra helpings for the extra hungry (greedy?) members of the group, and was super nice and friendly. We all had a main course and a pudding, do try the chocolate mousse, fantastic! plus a few extra drinks, so I was rather bracing myself for the bill, but this was astonishingly low, only very slightly over £200 for all that! If you are anywhere near Frome do go here for Sunday lunch, we certainly will and we are looking forward to trying their week day menus on our next visit. Thank you so much to Richard and his team

I had my family visiting from all over the UK. We visited the Crown as a group of 8 adults and 3 children fromn- it was The Best Roast we have all had (my brother works at a Michalin Star restaurant). The beef was exceptional and the roast potatoes were super crispy. Richard and staff were so friendly and the seconds were most welcome. We will be taking all guests in the future

Lovely pub nice staff well kept beer

Hosted our daughter's first birthday party in 'The Hub' upstairs at The Crown. It's a fantastic space (and free of charge to hire). The team at The Crown couldn't have been more accommodating for our group! We ended up staying for the evening and enjoyed their delicious food too (the steak sandwiches are superb). Fantastic pub.

We visited this pub restaurant twice during a week's stay in Frome. The food on offer is mainly steaks but the quality of the meat is excellent - melt-in-the-mouth . The staff were also very friendly and helpful. We were a party of ten and were all saying how much we enjoyed the meal and wine. My vegetarian daughter also said the vegetarian steak was one of the best she's ever had. Would highly recommend!

The Crown is a real find. Lots of snug areas for dining, nice garden; really nice decor throughout. We were made to feel welcome and the owner was very knowledgable about the menu (food and drink). It’s nice to see an open kitchen. Food and service were great.

I booked a table yesterday for lunch today, and the owner Dan (I think) accepted the booking for lunch time today, Friday. It turned out the pub doesn’t open for lunch on Fridays, and is shut until 3PM, but I called without a caller ID and so poor Dan wasn’t able to contact me back. I arrived today to find they have opened just for the two of us !!! I feel very sorry about this, but we had the BEST rump steak we have ever had, and also the best service too. Thank you so so much for everything today, next time we’ll make sure we only come when it’s open.

The Crown has had an amazing make over that is extremely sympathetic to the C17th building. The food is A1 and cooked by the proprietor. lovely Steaks. Fine wine list. Beautiful beer garden.

Friendly staff and good glasses

The best thing about this place is the atmosphere. We were looking forward to the Parrillada cuisine but left feeling disappointed. We tried the beef rump and the pork chop and although they had flavour from the grill they were both quite dry. The accompanying sides were limp salad in small portions and tasteless chips that reminded me of Macdonald's frozen fries. Sadly we won't return or recommend. We thought it wouldn't take much to improve this place. It wasn't cheap either!

Haven't been in the restaurant side yet, but the pub is top class. Good selection of drinks and a friendly service, highly recommend if you're in Frome.

The new layout and look is really great, nice relaxed buzz about the place and the staff are friendly. Good range of bottles and spirits, excellent cocktails, but no cask ales, pricey beer, and they don't open Mon-Weds. Not tried the food, but it looks interesting

We ate here before Christmas. The meal was average and all our food was overpowered by the flavour of the coals/charcoal. I could not taste other food on my plate or enjoy my bottle of wine after tasting the seared meat. Everything was over powered by the taste and smell of the parilla including my clothes which stunk and had to be washed straight away as the smell lingered in the wash basket!

The staff at The Crown Inn are great, including owners Dan and James who are always busy in the thick of the action which is good to see. The pub offers Frome beautiful courtyard garden space in a pub environment where you don't have to remortgage your house to buy a glass of wine. Time and care has been taken to renovate the place sympathetically. They have exposed the beautiful inglenook fireplace giving a cosy feeling to the bar area and added new character features of their own that blend easily with the old. They have accommodation, a function room and plenty of large tables so it's great for social and community gatherings. I've popped along with a large group of us including little ones and they were really accommodating and the kids loved the foot pump taps in the toilets. Aside from seeing a few more local beers/ales/ciders doing the rounds at the bar this pub is superb and definitely one to visit should you be spending time in Frome.

The newly refurbished Crown Inn at Keyford in Frome is definitely a massive improvement on what it used to be. The staff were really friendly and helpful, the parrilla inside the pub could be an issue if you're smoke sensitive, the menu is excessively meat heavy and only one vegan option in the mains, which is disappointing for you vegetarians and vegans (of which Frome has many and I am one of them!). I had the Halloumi skewer with "leaves" and fries. Unfortunately for us, four out of the five that were dining had the halloumi which was accompanied, for some obscure reason, by a large metal hanging affair per person that took up so much room on the table and didn't really work! As soon as the halloumi skewer was hung on this strange object, the lot just slid off onto the plate beneath! We had to reject them and ask our lovely waitress to take them away! I suggest you do the same! The food tasted good in the main apart from the fact that it was a bit hit and miss with the halloumi, some pieces being cremated and some rock hard! The aubergine was uncooked and thus inedible. Onion, mushroom and peppers delicious but so very sparse! By the end of eating my meal I felt like I'd just had the starter! Why, oh why are vegans and vegetarians so badly catered for in pubs and restaurants? Had I been a meat eater not only would I have had a proper balanced meal but I may have left feeling fuller! Come on, Guys! Don't forget we exist and make up quite a large percentage of your possible business? Can't knock the renovation, the desire to create a warm, welcoming place for the locals and a great range of drinks but I do take issue with the menu and the fact that for a few leaves, 3 chunks of halloumi, a mini bowl of fries (not handmade) and a few extra bits of veg I paid £16 for the pleasure! Really? We were offered a free round for the poor state of the halloumi and aubergine but it felt pricey for so little and my tummy felt short-changed too! The pub is still a really lovely meeting place for a bevvy and some socialising though. Dog friendly and has a little outside yard for the warmer weather with a shepherd's hut! Five stars for the pub itself.

This old-going-on-ancient pub, features in the new CAMERA book 'Real Heritage Pubs of the South West,' one of a series of books delineating pubs whose interiors are as near as the it was when the pub was first opened. A fascinating book which if followed will take one to fascinating places. And The Crown is one such, dating back to the late 17th century. Recently taken over by Allan and his family and since then the 50's style lino floor covering in the left hand bar, has been removed and a more original floor exposed. He plans more changes to bring the place back more to its former more aesthetic style. The pub has plenty of character and amusing character who will readily engage a new face in lively conversation. Worth more than just one visit.
